Sydney Report # 14 "Midsummer Christmas and Cultural Activity"

December is the Christmas season, and it is celebrated in Australia located in the Southern Hemisphere, the season is the opposite of Europe / Asia / North America.

Upon arrival in Sydney, I visited a local cultural center called MOSAIC and registered two cultural classes. 1) ukulele lessons in English (every Monday, 100 minutes), 2) beginner Chinese (every Thursday, 100 minutes), each fee is A $ 31 (about 2500 yen) in 16 weeks.

MOSAIC stands for Multi-culture One Stop Assistance Information Center located near Chatswood station (5 minutes on foot). Literally multicultural classes are held throughout the year (except during the holiday seasons).

My wife and I also participated in a cultural activity group called "Japanese social organization (JSG)" at MOSAIC. The members of JSG are Japanese only. They are doing a few activities like "Cooking class" and "Tai Chi practice", and we participated in "Tai Chi" and practiced Tai Chi for one hour every Wednesday every afternoon.

Besides the activity of MOSAIC, my wife and I also participate in a local choir called "Come and Sing Community Choir" and practice every Monday night.

All these cultural activities are aimed at "Christmas performance", after that there is "summer vacation."

The first Christmas event was a Christmas party held on November 30th by MOSAIC and City of Willoughby.

The party held over 350 participants and was held in Chatswood Concourse. There are 33 tables, each with 10 chairs. My wife and I helped for "table setting" just like last year.

There were Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean, Japanese, Indonesian, Malaysian, Singaporean, Hong Kong, Iranian, Filipino, Italian and other tables. It is just like "mosaic" itself.

There were "Tai Chi" and "Japanese folk dance" tables. People at each table should bring their own dishes. Among the JGP members, there were excellent cooks and offered delicious Japanese cuisine. I thought that our table was one of the best tables with lots of delicious foods.

The party started with an opening speech by Mayor of Willoughby, Pat Reilly. She is a good-looking woman and is said to have received more than 90% supports among voters.

There were five major performances including our (JSG) performance.

1) Indonesian folk music by traditional Indonesian musical instruments.

2) Japanese Ninja Tai Chi by JSG. Leader Hosaka and eight outstanding students performed the "Ninja style" Tai Chi with BG M of "Tsugaru Shamisen".

3) Chinese Tai Chi using Chinese Tai Chi or fans. They opened and closed the fans well.

4) Folk dance of "Ohara-bushi" by Japanese Fold Dance Group.

5) Christmas Carols by Korean choir. They sang in English so the audience joined their singing.

After the "quiz prize awarding time" and the closing speech, a kind of disco dance began with music of "Sway". This first Christmas party was over merrily with caotic dancing by many participants.

The next Christmas event was singing at the candle service of St. Stephen's Church. My wife and I were members of 34 local choirs named "Come and Sing Community Choir (CSCC)".

St. Stephen Anglican Church must be the biggest church in City of Willoughby. We practiced a lot of Christmas carols, and on December 16, we did performances in front of 400 congregations.

CSCC's leader is Vanessa South. She is a niece of our best friend, Ian Francis, the ophthalmologist. Ian is also a member of CSCC.

On that day there was an hour's rehearsal and there was "real" or "real" at 19:30. We sang all Carol well, but the overhead lighting was too strong and it was too hot. I sweat everywhere when the service was over.

The last cultural event for me was the ukulele's performance. It was held in the Chatswood Market on 17th December.

In addition to MOSAIC 's ukulele lesson, I participated in a ukulele lesson once a week with Pennant Hill.

Actually this time it was "Music for Bonzer" which was performing a street performance. We played 34 songs, including the famous Chinese song "Mind representation", and the legendary Japanese song "Sukiyaki".

Among the students in the ukulele class, there was a woman who was truly beautiful. She first sang this song in Chinese, then we all sang in English.

Regarding "Sukiyaki", there were Japanese female singers in "Music for Bonzer". She sang every song with a sharp voice, but she is very fine. She first sang this song in Japanese, then we all also sang in English.

By the way, Aussie Christmas is quite different from ordinary Christmas for people in the Northern Hemisphere. It is hot and it is healthy. There is "Aussie Jingle Bells", one of 34 songs played by ukulele. The lyrics of this song represents the atmosphere of Christmas in Australia.

シドニーレポート14号　「真夏のクリスマスと文化活動」

12月はクリスマスのシーズンで、季節が北半球とは真逆のオーストラリアでもクリスマスは盛大に祝われる。

私は8月1日に来豪してすぐに地元のウィロビー市が主催するカルチャー教室に登録した。１つは毎週月曜日の英語によるウクレレ教室で、もう一つは毎週木曜日に開催される中国人講師による初級中国語講座である。

場所はチャッツウッド駅のすぐそばのMOSAIC Centerで、期間は16週間、料金は1講座当たり31豪ドル(約2500円)である。

ちなみにMOSAIC(モザイク)とはMulticultural One Stop Assistance Information Center(マルチカルチャー・ワンストップ支援センター)の頭辞語(アクロニム)で、この市に住む様々な文化を持つ住民の文化活動を支援するところという意味である。

ウクレレと中国語講座は私だけが参加するが、毎週水曜の午後はジャパニーズ・ソーシャル・グループ(JSG)の活動があり、こちらでは日本人講師による太極拳の指導があり、夫婦で出席している。

夫婦で出席しているのはこのほかに毎週月曜日の夜、この地域の住民が集う市民合唱団(Come and Sing Community Choir) の合唱訓練である。

クリスマスの行事は数多くあるが、私にとって最初のものは11月30日に開催されたMOSAICのクリスマス・パーティである。

これは毎年、市長も出席して開催され、今年もチャッツウッドの中心部にあるコンコースの宴会場に約350人が集まった。

我々夫婦は昨年同様、1テーブル10人×33テーブルのセッティングの支援を担当した。

各テーブルはそれぞれ異なる文化圏の人々が占め、中国、台湾、韓国、日本、インド、インドネシア、マレーシア、シンガポール、香港、イラン、フィリピン、イタリアなど実に様々で、文字通りモザイクである。

日本人のテーブルは太極拳のほか、日本民謡のグループもあり、人数は中国、韓国に続いて多い方かもしれない。

各テーブルはそれぞれのグループが食べ物を持参する持ち寄り形式で、我々のテーブルは感謝なことに料理の得意な方がすばらしい日本料理をホームメードで作って持参され、おそらく全会場で１、２を争うほどの豪華さだった。

パーティでは女性市長Pat Reillyさんの開会のあいさつに続き、以下の5つの出し物があった。

1)インドネシアの民族衣装を着た合唱団、2)JSGによる忍者太極拳、3)中国人による扇太極拳、4)日本人民謡グループによる「小原節」民謡(踊り)、5)韓国人合唱団によるクリスマスキャロルメドレーであった。

インドネシアの合唱団はシスター(修道女)の身なりをした指揮者の指揮により、竹製の不思議な楽器の演奏でさわやかな感じがした。

我々JSGの太極拳のパフォーマンスは長身の保坂師範を中心に、上弟子8人が加わって3列で、津軽三味線のBGに合わせて忍者の動きを取り入れたスピーディな動きを演じた。

三番目の中国人の太極拳はさすがは本場と思わせるダイナミックな演武で、大きな扇を一斉に開閉するときの大きな音がぴったりと合って、すばらしかった。

4番目の「おはら節」の選曲はNHKドラマ「西郷どん」の影響があったようで、こちらも例年通り人気が高い。

最後の韓国人女性グループによるクリスマス・キャロルは英語によるコーラスなので、会場の人々も加わり、一体感があった。

出し物が終わると、プレゼントのくじの当選番号発表があり、それが終わると大音響のダンス音楽がかかり、”Sway”の曲から数曲、ダンスパーティのようになった。

次の私にとっての大きな文化イベントは、地域合唱団による聖スティーブンス教会における夕拝(キャンドルサービス)での本番である。

毎週月曜日の夜、熱心に練習をかさねた10数曲を12月16日の夜のクリスマス礼拝で発表した。このグループは西欧人が中心で、30数名の団員のうち東洋系は我々夫婦のみのようだ。

指揮者のヴァネッサは、一昨年からの我々の親しい友人で眼科医のイアン・フランシスの姪で、このグループへの参加はイアンの勧誘による。イアンは私と同じベースの担当である。

聖スティーブンス教会堂は大きなステンドグラスが入った堂々とした建物で、会衆はおそらく400人ぐらいだと思う。

私も合唱団の一員として壇上に上がったが、証明のライトの熱がかなりのもので汗をかいた以外はうまくいった。

私にとって3つ目の文化活動は、聖スティーブンス教会での夕拝の翌日、12月17日の午後、チャッツウッド目抜き通りで行われたウクレレ演奏である。

ウクレレは昨年の訪豪時(2017/9-12)に始めたが、今年はこのMOSAICのウクレレ教室のほかにも、少し離れたペナント・ヒルで月1回開催されるウクレレ教室や、ウィロビー・コミュニティセンターで同じく月1回開催される同好の集い(Music for Bonzer)にも参加しはじめた。

実際、今回のストリート・パフォーマンスはMusic for Bonzerの主催である。このグループはMOSAICとは関係なく、だれでもウクレレさえあれば参加でき、曲目と楽譜は事前にメールで送付される。

今回はクリスマス・キャロルのほか、中国の名曲「月亮代表我的心」や日本の「上を向いて歩こう」を含む35曲を演奏した。

「月亮代表我的心」はMOSAICの同じクラスの中国人が美しい歌声を披露し、「上を向いて歩こう」はMusic for Bonzerの常連の日本人女性がハスキーボイスで歌い、どちらも観衆に受けた。

It will be 4 months since I came to Sydney this year and November 4th was my 71st birthday.

My daughter-in-law Louise kindly encouraged me to invite my Korean trekking friends and their wives for my birthday party.

Louise ordered two big dishes of sushi, my son worked hard for Korean BBQ. My wife also helped to prepare more dishes, thus we invited 3 Korean couples to our home on Nov. 4th.

My guests brought some bottles of nice red wine as well as “makkori” (Korean wine), a box of big “Nashi” (Japanese pears), and to my delight, Mr. and Mrs. Kim brought a mulberry tree in a pot.　They know that I like mulberry fruit and I also drink mulberry leaf tea.

I first met Mr. & Mrs. Kim at a local church. We talked during the tea time after the service, and soon I found that they liked “bush-walking.” So, I joined their hiking group.

We go hiking every Saturday. Our destination is mostly like Leura, Blue Mountains. But we sometimes go different area such as north coast of Sydney.

Recently we went Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park twice. Once I took my grandson, Noah. At that time, we saw big lizards called “lace monitors or lace goanna.”

Talking about birthday party, our whole family were invited to one of Louise’s relative’s 2 month-old boy’s birthday party.

Louise’s uncle (father’s younger brother) has two sons. Each married Caucasian lady and both of them had their first child this year. The second son married a German lady and got a daughter, and the first son married an Irish lady and they got a son this August. Louise’s uncle and aunt were so happy and they invited their relatives to celebrate the new born baby’s 2 month birthday! There were 41 people including ourselves got together at a Chinese restaurant at Sydney Fish Market.

It might be a Chinese custom to invite relatives to celebrate a new-born baby’s birthday. Anyway, Louise’ relatives are all Christians and they immigrated to Australia in the latter half of 20th century. Therefore there were plenty of feast, but without alcoholic beverage. We enjoyed a lot of Chinese dishes with several kinds of soft drinks and jasmine tea.

シドニーレポート13号　「私の71歳の誕生パーティと満二カ月坊やの誕生祝い」

今年もシドニーに来て4カ月が経とうとしている。11月4日は私の71回目の誕生日である。

長男の嫁、ルイースが私の誕生日に、毎週いっしょにブルーマウンテンズなどをトレッキングしている韓国人の仲間を夫婦で招待するよう励ましてくれた。

誕生会のごちそうは嫁が中心になり、息子は韓国式BBQを担当し、私の妻も手伝って、3組の夫婦を招待した。大人だけでも10人の会で、チャッツウッドの息子の家で、ホームパーティで祝ってくれた。

客人たちは高級ワインや箱詰めの大きな梨やマッコリ(韓国式どぶろく)や、それに鉢植えの桑の木をプレゼントしてくれた。桑は私がその実を好むのと桑の葉茶を飲むことを知っているキムさんのプレゼントだ。

彼らと知り合ったのは3年前に遡る。徒歩15分の近所の教会で礼拝者の中にオーストラリア人に交じって韓国人キムさん夫妻がいた。

彼等の趣味がトレッキングというのですぐに意気投合して仲間に入れてもらった。目的地はブルーマウンテンズの「ルーラの森」であることが多いが、シドニー周辺の国立公園内を歩くこともある。

最近ではクーリンガイ・チェイス公園(Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park)が印象深かかった。このときは孫のノア(12歳)も連れて海岸沿いのブッシュウォークで、1mを超すレースオオトカゲを４匹も見た。

さて、誕生会と言えば、おどろいたことがあった。息子の嫁のルイースは上海出身だが、その親族の多くがオーストラリアに移民していて、彼女の従妹の長男の誕生パーティがシドニーの魚市場の二階のレストランで開催された。

その主人公はなんと満2か月のオイシンという坊やだった。ルイースの父方の叔父は二人の息子がいて、どちらも西洋人(アイルランド人とドイツ人)と結婚し、そのどちらも今年、子供が誕生した。

ドイツ人と結婚した次男の子供が10カ月の女の子のビリーで、アイルランド人と結婚した長男の子供がオイシンだ。

親族は我々も含めて41人で、大きな丸テーブル３を囲んで実ににぎやかだった。パーティが始まる前にはプロの写真家が家族ごとの集合写真と全体の集合写真を撮った。彼等は全員クリスチャンで、共産党の弾圧を嫌って、移民した歴史がある。

誕生会の進行は私の息子の結婚式の時同様に、英語と中国語で進行され、私の長男が感謝の祈りをささげた。

ちなみにたくさんの御馳走がつぎからつぎへと出たが、アルコールはいっさいなく、各種のジュースとジャスミン茶でにぎやかに談笑した。

Sydney Report No. 12 "Spring Holidays and Mulberry Picking”

It’s already 2 month-and-half passed since I came to Sydney on August 1.

For the first two months, we had fine weather every day. I read a web news which said Australia had been suffering the worst drought in 50 years.

But in October, we have quite a few rainy days. I even wondered that they had “rainy season” at least, in Sydney.

Yet, I keep bush walking even we have a little rain. I constantly go to Blue Mountains twice a week every week.

In October, they have spring school holidays in NSW, so I took our third and only grandson to Blue Mountains twice during his spring holidays.

Our grandson, Noah likes computer games and reading, rather than going out and play outdoors. So my daughter-in-law, his mother gets worried about his health, or balance between indoor and outdoor activities and asked me to go hiking with him.

When Noah and I go together for hiking, he walks much fast, so I made him wait for me. I took him to Wentworth Falls, and Leura Forest in Blue Mountains, and he adjusted his pace well this time.

From Chatswood where we live, to Blue Mountains area, it takes 2 hours and half by train. It takes 5 hours for a round trip whenever I go to Blue Mountains. We read a lot of books on the train (I use kindle every time.)

There is a middle sized city called “Penrith” on our way to Blue Mountains. Actually it locates at the edge of Sydney region along the Nepeon River.

There is a reserve area along the river. And there are a lot of mulberry trees in the reserve. One of my hiking friends who lives in Penrith told me that these mulberry trees bore a lot of mulberries last year. He guided me to the place and I picked up quite a lot of mulberries last year.

So, early in October, I visited the reserve area with a lot of mulberry trees alone. I did find a lot of mulberries ripe enough to eat. I picked up 4.6 kg of mulberries for my first picking day.

Last week, my daughter-in-law drove my wife and me, and her 2 small kids and we visited the reserve with some stools. If we stepped on the stools, we could pick up mulberries much easily I thought. I was right. We began picking up mulberries, then about 30 minutes later, suddenly it began to rain dogs and cats all of the sudden.

We ran into the car, but it was a lot of fun. Mulberry picking was so effective with stools, so we could pick about the same amount within 30 minutes.as I did alone for two hours a week ago.

We can make mulberry jam and eat with bread, yogurt and ice-ream. And more important for me, I can cook young mulberry leaves and eat them with vinegar-soy source as one of side dishes when I eat brawn rice porridge as my regular diet. Eating mulberry leaves makes my blood-sugar rate low.

I hope hiking and picking up mulberry experience will be some good memories for my grandchildren.

シドニーレポート12号　「10月の春休み」と「桑の実採り」

8月1日にシドニーに来て、2か月半が過ぎた。

最初の2か月は晴天続きで、NSWでは50年ぶりの大干ばつというニュースをウェブで見た。

しかし、今月に入ってからは少なくともシドニー地域では雨期に入ったのではないかと思うくらい雨の降る日が続いている。

私は多少の雨でも週2回のブルーマウンテンズのトレッキングは続けている。

長男の第3子の諾亜(ノア12歳)は現在小学校六年で、10月第1週からは春休みである。彼はどちらかというとインドア派で、休みの日は読書かコンピュータゲームに興じる時間が長い。

彼は私より常に先に歩くので、見失う場合がある。そこで、今回は私が見えなくなったら、私を待つという約束で同行した。いずれは、日本の山々を案内したいものである。

私の住んでいるチャッツウッドから、ブルーマウンテンズへ行くには、まず「シティ」と呼ばれるシドニー中心部を通り、そこから北西部へ延びる「ブルーマウンテンズ・ライン」を走らなければならない。

列車に乗っている時間は、往路2.5時間、復路2.5時間の5時間になる。私は車内ではキンドル本を読む。ノアはハードコピーの本を読んでいた。

この途中で、シドニー区域とブルーマウンテンズ区域の境にペンリスという地方都市があり、Nepeon Riverという境を流れる川のほとりの緑地地帯に桑の木の並木がある。

この桑の木にはたくさんの桑の実がなり、昨年、地元の人に教えられて桑の実をたくさん収穫した。今年も10月に入って桑の実が実るころとなったので、桑の実の様子を見に行った。するとすでに熟した桑の実がたくさん実っていて、約2時間ほどの間に4.6kgの桑の実を収穫することができた。

10月の第2週には、妻、嫁、孫と私の4人で車で桑の実を採りに出かけた。この日は車だったので踏み台となるストゥールも荷台に積んで行った。

電車で行くと90分かかるが、車だと50分で到着した。踏み台を使うと、高い位置にある桑の実も容易に摘むことができる。

面白いように収穫できるが、到着後30雰囲気が30分もすると雲行きがあやしくなり、遠くに稲妻の閃光が走り、バケツをひっくり返したような雨が降り出した。

あわてて、車に戻り、帰路についたが、大変効率の良い桑の実採りで、午前11時には家に帰り、収穫も一人で2時間の時と同じくらいであった。

熟した桑の実はマルベリージャムにしてパンにつけたり、サンドイッチにしたり、ヨーグルトやアイスクリームと一緒に食べてもおいしい。

また、桑の若葉は、ゆでて酢醤油にして食べると大変美味なうえ、血糖値を下げる薬効がある。

小6の諾亜(ノア)にとってハイキングとともに桑の実採りもきっと思い出になることだろう。
