On March 11, 2019, one of my old friends, Mr. H. S and his wife visited me during their 5-day packaged tour to Sydney. They are from Okinawa, and the tour stepped over at Taipei, so actually time in Sydney was 2 nights and 3 days.
On the same day, there was “The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami 8th Commemoration Event in Sydney, and I assigned myself to attend that event.
I met Mr. H. S at ISE (I Speak English) Convention held in Gotemba in late 1970s for the first time.
He was the representative of Shimizu ESS, while I was a member of organizing group.
After the convention, he went to USA, spent some decades there, became a Christian pastor and returned to Japan, not Shimizu in Shizuoka, but to Okinawa. He got married in Okinawa.
While I was living in Korea (2003-2014), I visited Okinawa twice and warmed up our old friendship. Now I am living in Sydney and it is his turn to visit me in Sydney.
Since they joined the packaged tour, they already visited most of sightseeing points including Sydney Opera House and Blue Mountains.
However, the last day in the tinerary, March 11 was open for optional tour or free day of their own and he chose the day to warm up our friendship, so I visited their hotel, Rydges Camperdown Sydney and met them at the lobby.
The hotel locates along Broadway in Sydney, about 3 km from Central Station if I walked directly.
I got off Central station at 9 am and walked around, searching their hotel and arrived at the hotel at 10:10 am. Just when I entered the lobby, they had come down by elevator.
They left their luggage at the front desk and we started walking along Broadway toward Central Station.
There is Victoria Park next to Sydney University close to their hotel. We enjoyed the spacious green park and took train at Central Station.
We got off at Circular Que Station, and walked toward Royal Botanic Garden first.
Royal Botanic Garden is just next to Sydney Opera House, where they wanted to spend more time freely.
We enjoyed walking the botanical garden where the Government House, Sydney is adjacent.

There are huge trees there, and one of them looked very old because it was dying, but I noticed it was younger than myself. I found the plate saying it was planted by Queen Elisabeth when she visited there.
After strolling in the botanical garden, we arrived at Opera House at almost noon. My guests enjoyed spending more time at the magnificent artistic building, and we had lunch (Subway sandwich) at the bench, and then we walked along the harbor toward Madam Macquarie Chair.
However, they already visited Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair by the packaged tour, so I guided them to the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

The admission is fee, unless you want to see special exhibition (they were having Classical Chinese Art Exhibition, but we did not have enough time for that.)
It was my 3rd time to visit this museum. But I always like to see the regular exhibition of classical Western Arts. We spent 45 minutes for seeing great Western Arts there, and to my delight, we can take pictures as many as you like, unless you do not use flash-light.
After visiting the museum, we came to the Hyde Park near the train station. I recommended them to visit St. Marty Cathedral, and I hurried to the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami 8th Commemoration Event.
The cite was Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts (280 Pitt Street, Sydney) and I went back to Central Station and walked along Pitt Street.
Since our 2nd son and his wife have been working for recovery of Tohoku (East Japan) Disaster, my wife and I are keen to the related events. We join “Fukushima-kai” and “Tohoku-kai” meetings in Sydney from time to time.
We saw many people we met at several different occasions there.
The main event was showing two 311-related movies as below:
1) March, a story about “brass band team in an elementary school” in Tsunami and nuclear plant accident affected area. The struggle of overcoming difficulties, and the success of reuniting the band and their excellent performance.

Special lunch boxes of Tohoku local cuisine were served between two movies and they tasted good. It was popular not only among Japanese people, but also among their Aussie spouses.
It was a long day for me, and when I got home, it was after 10 pm.
My walking distance a day was 19.6 km, and 34,437 steps.

シドニーレポート16号 「シドニー観光案内と東日本大震災復興イベント・イン・シドニー」
今年3月11日、沖縄から私の古い友人H・S氏)が奥様とともにシドニーを訪れた。台北経由の5日間の旅行だが、シドニー滞在は2泊で実質2泊3日の観光旅行である。
また同日午後、シドニー日本クラブ[JCS: Japan Club of Sydney]のレインボープロジェクトが主催する東日本大震災復興イベントにも参加した。
さて、私とH・S氏は1970年代後半にESSのコンベンションで初めて会った。彼は清水ESSの代表であり、私は主催したISE(I Speak English)のスタッフの一人であった。
彼はその後米国に渡り、キリスト教の神学校で学び、牧師となって日本へ帰国した。帰国先は沖縄で、そこで結婚された。
私が韓国に住んでいた間(2003年～2014年)私は2回沖縄を旅行し、彼を訪問した。今回は私がシドニーにいて、今回は彼が私を訪問した。
H・Sご夫妻はパックツアーのため、シドニーの市内観光とブルーマウンテンなどをチャーターバスで効率よく回り、最後の1日は私の案内で市内をゆっくり観光したいという希望だった。
まずは彼らの滞在しているリッジズ・キャンパーダウン・シドニー・ホテル(Rydges Camperdown Sydney)のロビーで待ち合わせし、その後ゆっくりと市内観光をした。
このホテルは住所からはわからなかったが、グーグルマップで検索すると、セントラル駅からボロードウェイ(Broadway)をまっすぐ下り、ビクトリア公園(Victoria Park)を左にみて、シドニー大学を過ぎた交差点のそばだった。
ビクトリア公園はシドニー大学の敷地と隣接しており、広々とした気持ちの良い公園だ。私はセントラル駅で9時に下車し、ホテルを探して約5km歩き、10時過ぎに到着した。
ちょうど私がロビーに到着したら、彼らがトランクを下したところでよいタイミングだった。当初11時会う約束だったが、10:30にはホテルを出発した。
ホテル前からバスを使ってもセントラルへ行けるが、我々は街歩きを楽しむことにした。彼らは私が気づかない沖縄の街との違いが興味深いようだった。
ビクトリアパークの木の大きさには私も驚いた。池の花や水鳥たちは共通かもしれない。
セントラル駅からオペラハウスに行くにはウィンヤード駅で乗り換えてサキュラーキー駅で下車すればよい。
サーキュラー駅前を左手にオペラハウスをみながら、右手の小高い丘に登ると王立植物園入口がある。ここは敷地30万坪にも及ぶ広大な植物園でしかも入園無料である。
入ってすぐの地域はパラス・ガーデン(Palace Gardens)と呼ばれる地域でそのような雰囲気がある。
また植物園内にはシドニー湾を見下ろす丘の上にGovernment Houseがある。ここはニューサウスウェールズ州総督の公邸となっていて、受付で申し込めば邸内を案内人による見学ができる。
我々は案内なしの庭を見学してから植物園内を通ってオペラハウスに向かった。この日、オペラハウスの上部では外側を清掃する作業が行われていて、作業員が命綱を使って空中で作業をしていた。
我々はオペラハウスの前の歩道のベンチで休み途中で買ったサンドイッチを食べた。その後、再度オペラハウスの展望台に上ってから、植物園ぞいにマッコーリーチェア付近まで歩き、オーストラリア海軍の軍港をみながら、NSW美術館へ向かった。
NSW美術間には14時に入り、荷物を預けてから、14:45まで美術館内を見学した。この美術館を訪問するのは3回目であるが、常設の無料で見学できる部分がすばらしい。
昔、学生時代に美術の授業で学んだような作品がゆっくりと鑑賞でき、しかもフラッシュをたかなければ撮影が自由である。ご夫妻とは再会場所と時間を決めて自由に美術館内を歩き回った。
NSW州立美術館からセント・ジェイムス駅に向かうとセントメアリー大聖堂が公園に隣接してあり、彼らにセントメアリー大聖堂の再訪を勧めて私はこの日のもう一つの行事である「東日本大震災復興イベント」会場に向かった。
私はセント・ジェームス駅から再びセントラル駅へ向かい、ピットストリートを280番地まで歩いて「東日本大震災復興支援イベント」会場の会場であるSydney Mechanics' School of Artsに向かった。
会場では東北物産展や写真展が開催されていたが、メインは震災復興関連の2本の映画の上映と、休憩時間に食べた「東北郷土弁当」である。
妻と私はシドニーへ来ても次男が関わっている東北の復興プロジェクトに関心を持ち続けたいと願い、シドニー日本人社会のなかで「東北会」と「福島会」に参加している。
会場ではこの二つのグループのほか、これまで会ったことのある日本人及びその連れ合いの方々と多く会うことができた。
また、この日、上映された2本の映画は以下のとおりである。
1. [ 映画、MARCH ] (日本語音声、英語字幕）福島県南相馬市の原町第一小学校マーチングバンドは全国大会の常連校でした。
しかし東日本大震災が起こり、メンバーの半数が県外へ避難し、活動を中断せざるをえない状況になりました。 しかし仲間と一緒にマーチングを続けたいという強い思いに、指導者や保護者が活動再開のために楽器を集めて、避難各地域で練習ができる体制を作りあげました。月に1,2度しか全体練習が行えない厳しい状況の中、2012年1月末、再び全国大会出場を果たしました。逆境に負けず強く進む小学生達の勇気と感動

2. [ 映画、一陽来復Life Goes On ] (日本語音声、英語字幕）
東日本大震災発生から6年後、東北地方で生きる人びとの日常生活を通して、人間の強さ、優しさ、勇気、絆を描いたヒューマン・ドキュメンタリー。藤原紀香氏と山寺宏一氏がナレーションを務め、児童福祉文化賞や映文連アワード準グランプリを受賞。一陽来復(いちようらいふく)の春、すべての人に知ってもらいたい鎮魂と再生の物語。季節は移り、景色も変わる。人々の暮らしも変わった。 ６年間の日常の積み重ねから発せられる言葉と、明日に向けられたそれぞれの笑顔。
