Hiking Mountain: Gyeryongsan (鶏龍山), Daejeon (大田), Korea
Hiking Date: December 14, 2014 (Fine)
Route: Branch Point at Seoul Restaurant – Kunbaeje – Nanmae Tower – Sanbulbong – Nanmae Tower – Donghaksa Temple – Seoul Restaurant
Partners: Members of Taejonhikers [JongMoo Lee (Korea), George Furst (USA), Tia and Pablo (Canada), David Churchill(USA), Amy (USA), Alex (Bulgaria), etc.]
On the previous day, Saturday Dec. 13, I could enjoy "snowless" hiking at Waryongsan, Sacheon, GyongNam with AhToSan hikers.
But there was lots of snow in Daejeon. Therefore, I had “Snow Mountain Hike” with Taejeonhikers on Sunday.
Before hiking, I attended the morning service at Hanpit Christ Church next to Hanpit Apartment.
Hanpit Church has large congregation, more than one thousands, therefore they have several services on Sunday. I attended the first service (8-9 am), then I went to the meeting place, the main gate of KAIST by 10 am.
The two leaders of Taejeonhikers, JongMoo and George came. Then Tina and her son, Pablo, David Church, and to my surprise, Alex (originally from Bulgaria) came all the way from Daegu.
He lived for several years in Daejeon, as a mathematics teacher. Then he had to move to Daegu about 120 km apart from Daejeon because he found another position in Daegu.
We went to Gyeryongsan by cars. We began climbing the mountain at about 11 am.
We took the easiest route, from Seoul Restaurant to Kunbaeje, then Nanmae Tower.
It was snow covered trail, but not too difficult for me. The slope was gentle until Nanmaetap.
I took some group pictures in front of the stone towers, but after taking the pictures, I went to the toilet of the temple, and suddenly I noticed that I lost my camera!
I happened to see Ms. KS a strong member of AhToSan then. She asked me what happened to me. I told her that I lost my camera.
Then she shouted for me, “Anyone, found a camera!?” but no report anyway.
I had to give up my camera, but I had an extra camera, just in case. So, I used that extra camera from that time.
We climbed Sanbulbong Peak, climbing steep steps, and had several group pictures with my extra camera.
We came down to Nanmaetap, and then I took group pictures again.
From Nanmaetap we went down to the another route via Donghaksa Temple and came down to Seoul Restaurant.
We had “After-the-hike” Dinner at this restaurant. The main dish was “Kimchi-Pot” and we “Pajeon” and “Dotorimuk” and Korean beverage, “Mak-goli”.
Dotorimuk:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dotorimuk
We enjoyed hot meals and the drink, then they served hot tea with nice fragrance. They make tea out of branches/twigs and leaves of certain tree, not the regular tea leaves.
It tasted good. Korean people have deep and wide knowledge about plants than Japanese, I think.
They sell various plants at the shops at the foot of Gyeryongsan.
Anyhow, I enjoyed 3 days of hiking everyday during my 5 night 6 day trip again, even this cold weather.
I thank JongMoo and George Furst to organize this wonderful hike, again.

I like hiking very much. I used to go hiking with a Korean hiking club named “AhToSan.” This blog introduces mostly my hiking activities in Korea and Japan, and Sydney in Australia. As of January 2020, I live in Sydney suburb. I go Blue Mountains and bush walk in Sydney area.

141010 Gyeryongsan (鶏龍山계룡산) in Autmn 2014
Date: Oct. 10, 2014 (Fri) Fine
Mountain: Gyeryongsan, Daejeon, Korea
Course: Donghaksa Bus Stop – Mungeol – Keungoge – Namaetap – Bus Stop
Partner: None
I got up at 5:50 am at a room of BJ & Marta’s apartment, though I woke up at 5 am by my cellphone alarm. I left their apartment at 6:50 am.
Marta kindly got up, too and gave me an apple and some snacks. Unfortunately, I forgot to borrow a knife, so I had to bring the apple back, not having it during the hike.
When I went out from the apartment, I saw the sixteen-day-old moon above the roof of the apartment. It was just beautiful.
I took a taxi to Yuseong Hotspring and then took No. 107 bus. It is a quick way to go to the bus-stop, but later, I found out that No. 117 bus went to Yuseong at a nearby bus-stop of Hanpit Apartment. (I could save money for the taxi.)
I bought two “Samgak Kimpap”(similar to Japanese “Onigiri” at a convenience store in front of Hanpit Apartment, and I ate one of them on the bus to Donghaksa Bus Stop.
I arrived at Donghaksa Bus Stop (Last bus stop of No. 107 bus route) at 7:11. It was still early and all shops facing to the street were closed.
It was a fine day, and the air was clear so that I could see the antenna and military facilities on the summit of Cheonwanbong of Geryongsan very well from the street.
I began hiking at the fork point of two ways: Donghaksa and Mungol, turning to right to Mungol at 7:30 am.
From the entrance of the trail to the first pass, “Keungoge”it is a gentle up slope. I arrived at Keungoge at 8:30 am. I ate a piece of banana here and I arrived at Nammaetap at 8:55 am.
There are nice tables and benches at Nammaetap. I ate the 2nd rice ball there. My all breakfast was over.
The rocky steps from Nammaetap to the peak of Sambulbong are really steep. The last approach to the summit is made of iron steps. Climbers gain nice view of surrounding mountains as they climb up toward the summit.
I arrived at the top of Sambulbong at 9:20 am. It was a clear day and I could see the ranges of Gyerongsan very well. Until I reached at the summit from the entrance, I saw almost no hikers. It may be the time was too really for most of hikers.
I did see several hikers while I was walking on the ridge from Sambulbong to Gwaneumbong.
It was a clear autumnal day and the views from the ridge were wonderful.
I arrived at Gwaneumbong at around 10:40am. It was difficult to take my own picture because there was no flat place around the peak.
I began decending Gwaneumbong at 11 am. I did not see much autumnal color until Gwaneumbong, but I saw many such colors on my way down to the foot.
It was nice to see autumnal colors along the way. But there were no water at the famous Eumson Waterfall. It was a bit disappointing.
I came down almost noon, so I dropped in a restaurant which I came with Kishu, my Japanese hiking friend one year ago.
I ordered Bindaetteok(빈대떡, 10,000 won) and Makgeolli (막걸리, 4000 won)) and had them for lunch.
While I was waiting for the bus, I drank a can of beer and “Saeukkan”, Korean version of famous Japanese snack called “Kappa Ebisen”. It must be a bit over my capacity for alcohol, and I fell in sleep on the bus. As a result, I overslept and passed Yusong Bus Stop.
I got off the 107 bus and took 103 bus, then took subway and got off at Government Compartment, and took the familier 604 bus and went to Shinseongdong, where I used to live before.
I went to Shinseongdong Sauna and had Ttaemiri(때밀이) service. Ttaemiri service is a service you can get at a public bath house in Korea. A clerk is washing customer’s body from top to bottom.
I have an aquentance who does this service at Shinseongdong Sauna, Mr. Ha. He is surprisingly knowledgeful, and it is really a pleasure to talk with him while having “Ttaemiri” service.
The topic was the recent eruption of Mt. Ontake, which killed more than 60 hikers in Japan.
After having “Ttaemil” service at Shinseongdong Sauna, I went back to Hanpit Apartment to join Marta for attending an international event held at Hanpit Apartment that day.
