I came back from Sydney to Kamakura (Kanagawa-ken, Japan) on July 2nd. I shall be in Japan until December 22nd, this year.
So, I stop writing SR and will write KR (Kamakura Report) while I am living in Kamakura.
I used to work as “Guide Helper” who is to assist people with disabilities to go out in town.

I visited this museum when my Australian friends came to Japan several years ago. So it was my second visit. The museum is next to “Kokugikan (国技館)” where Sumo Tournament held 3 times a year (January, May and September).

There were volunteer English guide available, so last time, my friends and I enjoyed the tour in English.

After visiting Edo Tokyo Museum, we (people with disabilites and guide helpers) also visited "The Sumida Hokusai Museum (すみだ北斎美術館)."

This museum is recently opened. While I was climbing Mt. Ohyama previous day, I happened to know about this museum through a radio program.
So I was excited to visit this museum as a part of my first mission of Guide Helper.
As I expected, or more than I expected, it was a great museum. Hokusai’s master pieces were displayed according to his life stage.
I saw a human-size doll of Hokusai next to the entrance of exhibition room. Even his hand was moving as if he were drawing pictures.

According to the explanations on the wall, famous “Fugoku Sanjurokkei” or “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” were drawn when he was 67 – 75 years old!

Since I am at his age now, I feel as if I could do something meaningful in my evening years.

[Climbing Mt. Ohyama]
I have some free days every month and when I have such day, I go climbing mountains. I climbed Mt. Ohyama twice this month.
On July 5, soon after I returned to Japan, I went to Isehara (伊勢原), then went to Hinatayakushi(日向薬師) by bus.

It is said to be founded in 716 AD, so quite old temple. During Kamakura period (1192 – 1333) Minamotono Yoritomo (源頼朝 the first Shogun of Kamakura Bakufu) visited this temple to pray for his daughter’s recovery from her deadly illness.
It was cloudy, no blue sky at all, but temperature was not too hot, and cool hiking. My daily amount of exercise this day was 33,069 steps, 20.1 km, and 103 floors.

My second climb of Mt. Ohyama was on July 9th. It was still rainy season, and I climbed this time from Ohyama Cable-car station side.
There is a small temple named “Cha-tou-dera(茶湯寺).” It is really a small temple but I like its garden. There are many beautiful flowers, and almost no visitors. I like this quietness.

There are two tracks from Ohyama Cable Station to Shimosha (下社) temple; Otoko-zaka (男坂) and Onna-zaka (女坂). Otoko-zaka is steeper than Onna-zaka. I climbed through Otoko-zaka this time.

Though it was cloudy, but I could see Mt. Fuji silhouette among clouds this time.

I walked 34,866 steps, 21 km and climbed 160 floors that day.
[Visiting Mr. Uchida’s Grave]
Mr. Uchida was a free-lance journalist who often reported Silicon Valley situation in 1970s when I saw him for the first time.

He established Shonan ESS (English Speaking Society) when he was a university student in 1964.
He had been very active encourage people to study English. He advocated “Think globally and act locally.”

I followed his suit and established KEC (Kamakura English Club), another ESS in Kamakura in 1973. KEC is still active now and when I am back in Kamakura, I still join its activities.

Unfortunately, Mr. Uchida had kidney problem in his 50s and he had to get dialysis three times a week since 2000.
His heart functions were also deteriorated and he underwent a cardiac bypass surgery in 2008.
He wrote about this cardiac bypass surgery experience and I put his essay in my blog (in Japanese).
He passed away in July 2011, and those who regard him as “a great mentor” like myself, visit his grave every year since then.
This year 10 people got together and visited his grave.
We had a nice time at nearby restaurant, talking about Mr. Uchida and exchanged recent information.

KR (Kamakura Report) #1 「ガイド・ヘルパー」、「大山登山、「平塚の墓参」
7月1日にシドニー空港を発ち、翌2日に羽田に到着した。今回の帰国が最後の長期日本滞在になる可能性が高い。
そこで、SR(シドニーレポート)はしばらく休んで、KR(鎌倉レポート)として私の活動をお知らせしたい。
日本(鎌倉)にいる間は昨年渡豪するまで行っていたガイド・ヘルパー(移動介護従事者)の仕事を再びすることを決めた。
この仕事は、知的障害を持つ人の活動を支援するものである。
[GH (Guide Helper)最初のミッション]
最初のミッションでは「江戸東京博物館」および「すみだ北斎美術館」を訪問した。
江戸東京博物館は以前、オーストラリアの友人を案内したことがあり、今回は2回目である。

ここは大相撲の本場所が年3回東京で実施される国技館のすぐ後ろに位置している。
外国人に日本文化を紹介する絶好の場所である。

すみだ北斎美術館は最近完成したものでたまたまラジオの番組で紹介したのを聴いたばかりで、行きたいと考えていた。

展示室に入室するとすぐ横に北斎が作品を描いているリアルな人形がある。

ここでは作品が彼の生涯のステージ別に展示されていて、最も有名な富嶽三十六景は67歳～75歳の時に描いたものである。

[神奈川県の大山登山]
ガイド・ヘルパー(GH)活動は、1か月前に活動可能日を申請し、活動日のミッションが与えられる。7月は19回のミッションが与えられた。
私は毎週2回、GHをしない日がある。教会へ行く日曜日と昼間仲間と英会話を学ぶDay-KEC活動日の木曜日である。
6月に自分がまだシドニーにいるときに7月の活動日が決まり、GH活動がない日は3日間のみであった。
最初の2回は、近場の神奈川県の名山「大山(1250m)」に登った。
ブルーマウンテンは標高1000mの稜線を列車で走り、下車してからグランドキャニオンのような渓谷に下り、断崖の下の森を歩き、また階段を登る。運動は階段を下ってから登ることになる。
日本では当然、裾野から登り、頂上に達してから下る動きとなる。
最初の大山登山(7/5)のルートは伊勢原駅からバスで日向薬師まで行き、いわば大山の後ろの稜線を登山した。

この日は梅雨のさなかではあっても雨はふらず、むしろ涼しい登山ができた。一日の運動量は33,069歩、20.1km、103階であった。

2回目の登山(7/9)は伊勢原駅から大山ケーブル駅までバスでアプローチ。バス停は「大山ケーブル駅でも、実際のケーブル駅までは15分以上かかる。
途中に「茶湯寺」というユニークな名前の小さな寺がある。ここは四季の花がきれいである。

大山の正面玄関ともいうべき下社が山の中腹にある。ここへ至るルートには「男坂」と「女坂」がある。
今回は階段の勾配がきつい「男坂」経由で登った。
この日も曇天で気温が低く、比較手的登りやすかった。また、雲の中から富士山のシルエットが見えた。

この日の運動量は34,866歩、21 km、そして160階であった。
[師友の墓参り]
人生で巡り合う人々の中に「師友」と呼ぶべき友がいる。「メンター」と言い換えても良いかもしれない。

そのようなメンターの中に、1964年の東京オリンピックのころ、平塚で英会話サークルを立ち上げた内田登美雄氏がいる。
彼はフリーのジャーナリストで英語の達人だった。私も彼を見習って大船で鎌倉英吾会(KEC)を立ち上げた。
当時、NTTの前身の電電公社に勤めていた私は、高卒の職員でも企業内大学で学ぶことができる大学部選抜試験に挑戦していた。
内田氏の励ましがあって英語を学ぶ楽しみを知り、4回の失敗の後、5度目の挑戦で大学部に入学した。
その後、2003年にNTTを早期退職したあと、韓国へ渡って韓国の研究所や大学で働くことができたのは彼に負うところが大きいと思っている。
内田氏は2000年頃健康を害し、透析生活に入り、2008年には心臓バイパス手術を受け*、残念ながら2011年7月20日に永眠された。

毎年、このころになると内田氏を慕う友人たちがそろって墓参りをする。没後8年たった今年も10名の友人たちが集まり、墓参した。
