120226 Maninsan (マンインサン、萬仞山、만인산537m), Daejeon

Hiking Date: Feb. 26, 2012 (Sat) Cloudy

Destination (mountain): Maninsan (萬仞山만인산537m)

Hiking course: Maninsan Service Area – Maninsan Gazebo – Maninsan – Rope-Suspension bridge – Taesil of Taejo (Joseon Dynasty) – Youth Training Center – Parking Lot

Partner: 17 Taejonhikers including Alan

Alan had been invited to a conference sponsored by NFRC, his former working place in Korea. The conference was held at Muju Resort Area and he came to Daejeon after the conference.

Jong-Moo, who succeeded Taejonhikers, planned a half-day hike and 18 people joined the hike.

The nationalities varies such as Korea, US, Australia, Ukraina, Bulgaria, and Japan.

We met at the parking lot next to KAIST Main Gate at 1 p.m. and headed for Maninsan which was located in Dong-gu, Daejeon.

[Taejonhikers at KAIST Main Gate Parking Lot, KAISTの正門駐車場にて、 KAIST 정문주차장에서 ]

It’s a bit far than I thought. It took about one hour and we began hiking at 2:15 p.m.

There was a nice facility with toilets at the service area. They were selling traditional Korea snacks such as “Hot-Ttok” or “Karae-Ttok.” I bought a stick of Karae-Ttok by 1000 won (about 80 yen), and it tasted good.

[A stick of baked "Karae-Ttok",

Maureee bought two pieces of“Hot-Ttok”by 1400 won (about 100 yen) and gave one for me. It was sweet, and also good.

After taking a group picture, we began climbing the slope behind the shop.

[A group picture before the hike,

It was a bit steep, but not too long. Within 30 minutes, we arrived at a gazebo named “Maninsanlo.”

[The first approach was a bit steep slop,

The plate at the foot of the gazebo says it was built in 4334 of Danki (means 2001 AD), with the cost of 135 million won (about 1 million yen). It was a nice facility with good views.

After having a short break, we walked along the ridge and arrived at the top of Maninsan at 3:15 p.m. So, it took one hour from the start.

["Pipi", the pet dog of Mr. & Mrs. Furst,

The top area was covered with snow, and the snow on trees were frozen and beautiful.

We had a lengthy break there and began walking toward the opposite side of the mountain.

[The ridge trail was covered with snow, ]

When we came down to a valley, we arrived at the unique suspension bridge, which was made of white ropes.

[Suspension bridge made by ropes,

It was a bit thrilling and fun to walk on the ropes. After walking across the bridge, I noticed a warning which said “Don’t walk across the bridge unless you were with training specialist.”

["Taesil" of Joseong Taejong,

When we all walked across the bridge, I saw a unique tomb-stone. It was called “Taesil” and “umbilical cord” of Taejo of Joseon was buried under ths turtle like stone.

[The English explanation about "Taesil"

We came down to the training area for youth and finally came back to the parking lot at 5 p.m.

After the hike, we went to a traditional restrant nearby. The name of the restaurant is “Yetto Minjok Bangmulgwan(옛터민족박물관) or “Old Place of Folk Museum.”

[The entrance of the traditional Korean restaurant,

[Frozen waterwheel,

It was a fantastic restaurant with things of traditons in Korea.

There were many tables and chairs, but not big enough for all members. So we separated into several tables.

[↓“Ojingo Galbitang”

I ate my supper with 5 other members. I ordered “Ojingo Galbitang” or “Soup with cuttlefish and beef-lib.” Many dishes were brought along with “Ojingo Galbitang.” I could not eat them all, and I regretted that I did not put the left-over into the empty packs.

[Alan, saying "good-bye" to everyone,

Alan would return to US after the hike, and he said he would come back to Korea this fall for a couple of months for participating a special project.

We all look forward to his return to Taejonhikers.

This was my 11th hike for this year.

[Those who arrived first, were waiting for the last car.

[Maureen gave me a piece of "Hot-Ttok"、

[A group picture before the hike,

[In front of the gazebo "Maninsanlu" 『

[Jong-Moo and Alan on the 2nd floor of the gazebo,

[At the top of Maninsan,

[Hikers walking across the suspension brindge.

["Warning" was hanging, 『

[The entrance of the restaurant,

[Before and after the dinner,

120222The 3nd day of Kyushu Trip

Date: Wed. Feb. 22nd, 2012 (Rain all day)

Destination: Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture

Itinerary: Kagoshima→(Tokkyu Kirishima)→Miyazaki (Tokky Nichiri)→ Ohita → (Tokkyu Sonic) → Kokura → Shimonoseki

Partner: Mr. Matsumoto (Up to Kokura)

Got up at 5:45 at Room 708, Toyoko-in. Had “healthy” breakfast, buffei style (3 different type of rice ball, regular rice, miso-soup, fresh vegitable, cooked vegitable, etc.with coffee, and juice.)

They offer free newspapers as well. So I think, one stay with breakfast for 4700 yen is quite reasonable.

It was raining rather hard when we checked out. So I bought a long umbrella by 300 yen. (The umbrella was quite helpful, too.)

We took 8:57 special limited train “Kirishima” and headed for Miyazaki.

[Tokkyu "Kirishima"

We changed train at Miyazaki. We had 30 minutes for the next train “Nichirin.”

[In front of Miyazaki Station,

[Uniforms of Soft-Bank players hung on the wall of Miyazaki Station,

Then we headed for OhIta by Tokkyu “Nichirin.” We changed trains again at Ohita to “Sonic.” Thus I made a perfect round trip around Kyushu.

[Mr. Matsumoto in Tokkyu "Sonic"、

Mr. Matsumoto and I had plenty of time in the train. We talked various topics about history, culture, religions, etc.

We arrived at Kokura at around 4 p.m. Mr. Matsumoto headed for Hakata, while I took an ordinary train to Shimonoseki.

At Shimonoseki, I had to find Mizuho Bank for printing records on the banknote. Shimonoseki Branch of Mizuho Bank was located in front of Shimonoseki Police Office, about 10 minutes from the station on foot.

Then I had shopping on my way to the port. I bought things which were difficult to find in Korea, such as “Natto,” “good green tea,” and quality “coffee beans.”

After shopping, I forgot to put my purse in my pocket, leaving it in the shopping cart. While walking toward the port, I realized what I had forgotten. So I returned to the cash desk at the supermarket. The clerk found it and was keeping it under the counter. What a relief!

All necessary money I used at the port, such as tax and gifts for my Korean friends had been there in my purse.

On the board, Mrs. Hwang, a Korean-Japanese who asked me to get through the customs with her cigaretts (200 Japanese cigaretts and 200 American cigaretts) at Shimonoseki two days before, found me and spoke to me!

This time she did not ask me anything to carry. She obviously makes profit by bringing things between Japan and Korea.

I just listened to her story this time. She was born in 1933, but she looked much younger. She married a Korean when she was late teens. She got two sons, but later she re-married a wealthy Japanese and acquired Japanese nationarity. But her Japanese husband passed away some years ago.

It turned bad to worse, one of her son became half-paralyzed and she has to take care of.

She said both her Japanese husband and her son drank too much alchohole.

Her 2nd son lives in Pusan and she has her house in Shimonoseki. So, she traveles between Pusan and Shimonoseki with goods regularly.

I had the impression that Korean ladies were strong in bad situation.

When the ferry “Kyonhee” left the port of Shimonoseki, I took a light-uped Shimonoseki Tower from the ship.

["Doll Festival" decoration at Miyazaki Station,

[Ohita Station with a picture of monkey,

120221 Mt. Kaimondake (924m), Kagoshima-ken, Kyushu, Japan (九州・鹿児島県・開聞岳규슈•가고시마현•가이몬다케)

Hiking Date: Feb. 21 (Tus) fine

Destination (mountain): Mt. Kaimondake (924m), Kagoshima-ken, Kyushu, Japan

Hiking course: Fureai Park (The 2nd Station) – Entrance of the trail – Top of the mountain – Fureai Park

Partner: Mt. Matsumoto

Mt. Kaimondake has a relation with “Kamikaze.” Those young pilots took of the bases like “Chiran,” then flew around the mountain, salute to the mountain, saying “Good-bye my country” then turned to the south.

The first part of the Japanese phrase, “Good-bye my country (Kuniyo-saraba)”is “Kuniyo”happened to be the same sound of “924”which is the altitude of Mt. Kaimondake.

Anyway, we arrived at the "Fureai"Park and left the rent-a-car there, and began hiking at 10:30.

<[At the park in front of Kaimondake,

The road between the parking lot and the entrance of the trail was paved, and there were cherry trees on both sides.

[The cherry trees on the both sides of the road,

To our surprise, the cherry blossoms were already blooming! It might be a kind of “Kanhizakura” or “Taiwan cherry,”therefore, the color was a little bit redish than those we could see in Japan or Korea.

[The cherry blossoms were begun to bloom,

We arrived at the entrance of the trail at the 2nd station of Kaimondake at 10:10 a.m.

[At the entrance of the trail at the 2nd station,

Since it was a weekday, not so many hikers we met. The first hiker was a runer who ran up and down the mountain.

Then we saw alone hiker who came down at around the 4th station. And we met a father and a daughter with their pet dog at around the 6th station.

The trail became really steep from the 7th point. There were some points facilitated with ropes and stairs.

[The wooden stairs with ropes,

Finally we saw a man having lunch at the top of the mountain.

Since Kaimondake stands from the Kagoshima Bay, the views from the mountain were very good. We could see Kagoshima Peninsula and Kagoshima Bay; the land and the sea at the same time.

I found “Nagasakibana” quite unique and interesting. It looks like a nose of an elephant, or a snout of a marlin ("Kajiki" in Japanese.)

["Nagasakibana" point from the 5th station,

We arrived at the top of the mountain at around 1 p.m. We had “Cheers!”with Ebisu can beer and had lunch there.

[Gave a toast with "Ebisu" beer at the top of the mountain,

It took about 2 hours to go down to the parking lot.

[At the top of Kaimondake,

More pedals of cherry blossoms seemed open then those in the morning.

It was a pleasant 4.5 hour hiking.

They say that the altitude of the most of the best 100 mountains is over 1500 meters. Kaimondake is only 924 m. Yet they chose this mountain as one of 100 best mountains of Japan because of its beautiy. (Mt. Tsukuba which I climbed in January this year is only 877m, yet it is alos one of the best 100 mountains for the same reason.

I climbed two of 100 best moutains in Japan this year!

It was my 9th hike this year. (My target is 60.)

[The cherry trees on the both sides of the road,

[The cherry blossoms were begun to bloom,

[At the 4th Emergency Point at the 5th station,

[At the top of Kaimondake,

[Memorial Plate of Crown Prince Akihito's hike on July 20, 1988,
