130420 DeokRyongSan (徳龍山덕룡산376m) in Gangjin (康津강진), JeonNam (全南전남) Province

Date: April 20 (Sat) Rain then cloudy

Place: DeokRyongSan (徳龍山덕룡산376m) in Gangjin (康津강진), JeonNam (全南전남) Province

Course: Soseokmun – Dongbong – Mt. Deokryong – Jakcheonsoryong – Suyangri Park (About 13 km/6 hours)

Partners: 23 AhtoSan members

Since the mountain is far from Daejeon, we left the bus-stop one hour earlier (at 6 am), so I got up at 3:30 and prepared for the hike.

[A map of Mt. Deokryong for hiking,

When I got out of my studio apartment, I noticed that it was raining. So, I went back to my room and prepared for the raining hiking. It was a bit cold rain.

On the way to Gangjin, we had a little ceremony to award “Heras” as a best member, and “Sansalang” to celebrate his 200th regular hike.

[We celebrated Sansalang's 200th hike,

There were only 24 participants for the bus with 44 seats. I could use two seats for my own use, so I could work my private business (to check Kanji quiz for my students) on the bus.

When we came close to the mountain, we had a little traffic accident at a curve near a reservoir. A small truck hit our bus. We had to call a police car and it took about 20 minutes to settle down the accident.

[A little traffic accident,

We began hiking at 10:30 in the rain after taking a group picture.

I managed to follow the top group for about 30 minutes, then many AhToSan hikers went ahead of me.

We had a short break “Suzuki Time” at 11 am. I offered grapes and Kumquats or cumquats. It is called “Kinkan” in Japaense, and Korean people also called “kingkang낑깡” as well. They have their own language name 금귤(金橘), though.

[Suzuki Time at 11 am, 11

Since it was raining a bit, the flowers got wet and they were beautiful. We could see “Jindallae” a lot on this mountain, but I also found “Iris rossii Baker” one of my favorite flowers. They were beautiful, and I saw them rather many during this hike.

When I caught up the main group of AhToSan who were having lunch on the ridge was at 12:08. I joined them and offered high quority “Pig's trotters” which I bought previous day.

At about this time, it stopped raining, and it was much easier to hike without rain.

[At a trail along the ridge,

Since the mountain was very rocky, it was rather dangerous to climb because wet rock was slippery.

The “Jindallae” on the ridge was in full bloom, and it was really beautiful.

We could enjoytaking a lot of pictures of these flowers and the rocky peaks of the mountains.

I was between the middle group and the last group of hikers and a few AhToSan members around me.

[Camellia flowers at the last peak,

When I came down from the last peak, I was almost tumbling on the rock, but thank God that I did not. I felt that I had been protected by my God and I thanked him.

[Violets on the down trail,

When I was about to go to Mt. Jujank, the president of AhToSan called me from my back, “Don’t go, Mr. Suzuki, we were too late to go to another mountain.”

[Iris rossii Baker on the down trail,

I followed his advice, and went down from the point to make a short cut.

Actually it was not a short cut, but easier and safer course to the destination.

When we came out to the village, I could see rape blossoms in full bloom.

[Rape blossoms in a village,

[A reservoir near the destination,

I arrived at the final destination at 4:10 pm, not too bad.

There were several villagers selling their agricultural products (or simply took from nearby mountains.)

[Villagers selling vegetables,

I bought several vegetables including "Kalopanax septemlobus," common name prickly castor oil tree.

Actually, I did not know this plant and I asked the woman who was selling this plant. She told me it was “Eumnamu음나무” and it was “Harigiriハリギリ針桐” in Japanese.

I enjoyed the taste of this plant very much at home. (It cost 3000 won, about 3 dollars.)

We had a wrap-up party when all members finished the hike. The main dish was seasoned squids with vegetable.

We came back to Daejeon at around 9 pm. It was my 17th hike for this year, and my 310th regular hike of AhToSan hiking club.

[We celebrated Sansalang's 200th hike,

[A little traffic accident,

[The president and his staff members,

[Lunch time on the ridge,

[After the lunch with a female staff member,

[At the top of Mt. Deokryong,

[Violets on the down trail,

[Camellia flowers at the last peak,

[Iris rossii Baker on the down trail,

[Rape blossoms in a village,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalopanax

[The president at the party,

130219-22 Travel around Kyushu (Fukuoka & Nagasaki

Below is a travel essay written by a Korean student in my class. He traveled around Fukuoka and Nagasaki with his girlfriend in February, 2013.

------ “Trip to Kyushu” by Gyonghun Choi, Daedeok University

My girlfriend and I traveled around Fukuoka and Nagasaki in Kyushu, Japan during our winer vacation in Feburary, 2013. It was rather a sudden decision, so we could not have enough time to prepare for it.

However, I found the fact that it was Fukuoka when I visited before when I was 20 years old. It was a school excursion, and I did not aware of the name of Japanese city, because I did not have much interest in Japan than now.

On the first day of our trip, we would almost miss a taxi to the airport, bus, and airplane, we barely made it all. Fortunately, we could make it all right, but I would never like to experience such experiences again.

We arrived at Fukuoka Airport in one piece, and we had sightseeing at downtown Fukuoka, a beach and Fukuoka Tower that day.

[At a sushi bar in Fukuoka,

[At Seaside Momochi Beach Park,

On the 2nd day, we went to Nagasaki. We had “Nagasaki Champon” for the first time. Since “champon” is a poplular dish in Korea, we wanted to taste the original champon in Nagasaki.

After having sightseeing several places in Nagasaki, we went to Inasayama by ropeway in the evening.

[At Nagasaki Peace Park,

We had “Nagasaki Champon” at a restaurant on Inasayama and we could never forget the nice taste of the champon and the beautiful night scene of Nagasaki city from the mountain.

[Nagasaki Champon at a restaurant on Inasayama,

On the 3rd day of our trip, we went to Yufuin Hotspring Area. We had sightseeing at hotsprings there, and wandered around small paths since we had plenty of time until the train’s departure time.

[At Yufuin, "doctor fish" feet bathing,

Since it was a countryside, we could see children in the village, and we liked the atmosphere very much.

We came back to Korea after the 3 day trip to Fukuoka and Nagasaki and we were very happy to have nice memories of Japan. After the trip, we became closer each other. I promised my girlfriend that we would visit Japan again in the future.

Transportation fees are expensive in Japan, so we need to know economical ways to travel as visiting foreigners. If I have another chance to visit Japan, I would like to visit Tokyo next time.

My girlfriend is now having English training in the Philipines, and she got to know a Japanese friend from Tokyo. So, if we visit Tokyo, we may ask her to be our guide in Tokyo.

In order to communicate Japanese people, including my girlfriend’s friend, I should learn Japnanese more earnestly.

While having the short trip, I thought it would be more important to know the people and if possible to become friends with local people, not just having sightseeing.

I believe that not only Japanese, but I need to learn English so that I can broaden my world beyond Japan to the world.

[Yufuin Railway Station,
