KR (Kamakura Report ) #1 “Guide Helper", "Mt. Ohyama" and "Grave Visit” 「

Kamakura Report (KR) #1 “Guide Helper, Mt. Ohyama and Grave Visit”

I came back from Sydney to Kamakura (Kanagawa-ken, Japan) on July 2nd. I shall be in Japan until December 22nd, this year.

So, I stop writing SR and will write KR (Kamakura Report) while I am living in Kamakura.

I used to work as “Guide Helper” who is to assist people with disabilities to go out in town.

[My first mission as “Guide Helper”]

- To visit Edo Tokyo Museum http://edo-tokyo-museum.or.jp/en/

I visited this museum when my Australian friends came to Japan several years ago. So it was my second visit. The museum is next to “Kokugikan (国技館)” where Sumo Tournament held 3 times a year (January, May and September).

[At Edo Tokyo Museum,

There were volunteer English guide available, so last time, my friends and I enjoyed the tour in English.

[At Edo Tokyo Museum,

After visiting Edo Tokyo Museum, we (people with disabilites and guide helpers) also visited "The Sumida Hokusai Museum (すみだ北斎美術館)."

http://hokusai-museum.jp/?lang=en

[Sumida Hokusai Museum,

This museum is recently opened. While I was climbing Mt. Ohyama previous day, I happened to know about this museum through a radio program.

So I was excited to visit this museum as a part of my first mission of Guide Helper.

As I expected, or more than I expected, it was a great museum. Hokusai’s master pieces were displayed according to his life stage.

I saw a human-size doll of Hokusai next to the entrance of exhibition room. Even his hand was moving as if he were drawing pictures.

[The dolls of Hokusai and his daughter,

According to the explanations on the wall, famous “Fugoku Sanjurokkei” or “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” were drawn when he was 67 – 75 years old!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thirty-six_Views_of_Mount_Fuji

Since I am at his age now, I feel as if I could do something meaningful in my evening years.

[Hokusai's drawing in his 80s,北斎晩年の作品、호쿠사이 만년의 작품]

[Climbing Mt. Ohyama]

I have some free days every month and when I have such day, I go climbing mountains. I climbed Mt. Ohyama twice this month.

On July 5, soon after I returned to Japan, I went to Isehara (伊勢原), then went to Hinatayakushi(日向薬師) by bus.

[Hinatayakushi Main Hall,

It is said to be founded in 716 AD, so quite old temple. During Kamakura period (1192 – 1333) Minamotono Yoritomo (源頼朝 the first Shogun of Kamakura Bakufu) visited this temple to pray for his daughter’s recovery from her deadly illness.

It was cloudy, no blue sky at all, but temperature was not too hot, and cool hiking. My daily amount of exercise this day was 33,069 steps, 20.1 km, and 103 floors.

[At the top of Mt. Ohyama,

My second climb of Mt. Ohyama was on July 9th. It was still rainy season, and I climbed this time from Ohyama Cable-car station side.

There is a small temple named “Cha-tou-dera(茶湯寺).” It is really a small temple but I like its garden. There are many beautiful flowers, and almost no visitors. I like this quietness.

[Guide Plate of Chatou-dera temple,

[At Chato-dera garden,

There are two tracks from Ohyama Cable Station to Shimosha (下社) temple; Otoko-zaka (男坂) and Onna-zaka (女坂). Otoko-zaka is steeper than Onna-zaka. I climbed through Otoko-zaka this time.

[Stone stairs of Otoko-sazak,

Though it was cloudy, but I could see Mt. Fuji silhouette among clouds this time.

[Mt. Fuji from Ohyama trail,

I walked 34,866 steps, 21 km and climbed 160 floors that day.

[Visiting Mr. Uchida’s Grave]

Mr. Uchida was a free-lance journalist who often reported Silicon Valley situation in 1970s when I saw him for the first time.

[The grave of Mt. Uchida,

He established Shonan ESS (English Speaking Society) when he was a university student in 1964.

He had been very active encourage people to study English. He advocated “Think globally and act locally.”

[Visiting Mr. Uchida's grave,

I followed his suit and established KEC (Kamakura English Club), another ESS in Kamakura in 1973. KEC is still active now and when I am back in Kamakura, I still join its activities.

[A group picture of Mr. Uchida's friends,

Unfortunately, Mr. Uchida had kidney problem in his 50s and he had to get dialysis three times a week since 2000.

His heart functions were also deteriorated and he underwent a cardiac bypass surgery in 2008.

He wrote about this cardiac bypass surgery experience and I put his essay in my blog (in Japanese).

He passed away in July 2011, and those who regard him as “a great mentor” like myself, visit his grave every year since then.

This year 10 people got together and visited his grave.

We had a nice time at nearby restaurant, talking about Mr. Uchida and exchanged recent information.

KR (Kamakura Report) #1 「

そこで、SR(シドニーレポート)はしばらく休んで、KR(鎌倉レポート)として私の活動をお知らせしたい。

[GH (Guide Helper)

[The statute of guardian at the gate,

[At the top of Mt. Ohyama,

[The approach trail to Cha-tou-dera,

[Mt. Fuji from Ohyama trail,

[A group picture of Mr. Uchida's friends,

https://georgesuzuki.blogspot.com/2011/08/08032050by-tomio.html

[At a family restaurant after visiting the grave,

SR #18 “Walking is man’s best medicine” “Thursday Hiking Group”「

SR #18 “Walking is man’s best medicine” “Thursday Hiking Group”

Since September 2016, I have lived in Sydney for 3 to 5 months every year. This is the 4th year, and I have lived for 6 months this year.

Last year, I came to August, so this is the 11th month and therefore it is almost one year.

Until January 21 this year, my wife and I lived together with my son’s family. My son and his wife have 4 children, and they are growing fast.

Since their 3rd child (and only boy) becomes 12 years old and he needs his own room, we need to get out of their house this year.

We found a reasonable price rent room to pay in the same suburb of our son’s house, Chatswood, so we moved to a shared house in January this year.

I am planning to go back to Japan next month (July) and will live for 6 months at my house in Kamakura. So, this month is the last month in Sydney this year.

In the past 11 months, the things I spent my time most enthusiastically was “bush-walking.” Bush-walking is a big part of my life.

[Hippocrates' words about walking,

When I was walking “Great River Walk” with “Blue Mountains Club” on Tuesday, I found a sentence “Walking is man’s best medicine” by Hippocrates (c. 460 – c. 370 BC). And I completely agree with him.

I introduced some parts of trekking course in Blackheath, Blue Mountains in my last report, SR #17.

Now I’d like to introduce some trekking courses in my Chatswood neighborhood.

When I began to live with my son’s family in September 2016, I soon got to know a Korean couple who live in our neighborhood at a local church. They happened to be good hikers and they introduced me to their hiking group that their activities are on Saturday.

While bush-walking with them, I happened to know another Korean hiker who knows Blue Mountains very well.

His name is Mr. CH Kim, and he introduced me another hiking group which they go to Blue Mountains twice a week every week.

The name of the hiking group is “Blue Mountains Club.” They go to Blue Mountains twice a week; every Tuesday and Friday.

The leader, Mr. Chu is 90 years old this year, and his friend, Mr. Min is 92 years old!

I go to Blue Mountains with them every Tuesday.

And in March this year, when I was walking in my neighborhood, Chatswood on Thursday, a lady spoke to me in Chinese. To her, I must look like a Chinese.

She is Joanne from Hong Kong. I do study Chinese language, but my level of Chinese is not good enough for practical conversation. So, Joanne and I soon began conversing in English.

[Joanne at River Side Walk,

She asked me if it was all right to follow me for bush-walking. Come to think of it, it is very courageous of her to follow a stranger. But she did.

[Lane Cove River along River Side Walk,

It was a part of “Rail-to-River Walk” in Chatswood. I welcomed her, and promised her to guide her more of this walking track in Chatswood.

It was March 14, the first Thursday I walked with her.

“Rail-to-River Walk” is from Kenneth Slessor Park along Pacific High Way near Chatswood Station, and it goes through Partels Park, Ferndale Park along Swine Creek, and then goes to Lane Cove River.

In the middle of the course, there is Greville Street, where my son’s home is. So, I am very familiar with this course.

Week after week, Joanne came to join with me. Actually she is a good hiker. I introduced her Saturday Hiking Group. So she joined the Saturday Hiking Group twice.

[Joanne with Saturday Group,

But she was to go back to Hong Kong in the end of April this year.

Then I happened to know another guy who is willing to go bush-walking with me every Thursday.

His name is Marshell Mo, a Taiwanese hiker. He came with his friend, Peter Ku, another Taiwanese. Now I regularly go bush-hiking with two Taiwanese every Thursday.

[Marshell & Peter at Two Creeks Walk,

[Mountain view from Two Creeks Walk,

Coming Thursday (June 27, 2019) is the 16th Thursday since I met Joanne in March.

[At Hornsby Park,

Recently, one of my Japanese acquaintances, Mike Enomoto joined us. He is a bit senior to me, but very active in Japanese Social Group.

I will keep walking when I return to Japan next month, keeping in my mind, “Walking is man’s best medicine.”

[Hippocrates' words about walking,

[At River Side Walk with Joanne,

[Lane Cove River along River Side Walk,

彼女はかなりの健脚で、装備も良く、Rail-to-River Walkからさらに続くRiver Side WalkやThe Great North Walkも案内した。

[Joanne with Saturday Group,

[Marshell & Peter at Two Creeks Walk,

[Mountain view from Two Creeks Walk,

[At Hornsby Park,

SR #17 Tracks in Blackheath, Blue Mountains; Govetts Leap & Pulpit Rock、

SR #17 Tracks in Blackheath, Blue Mountains; Govetts Leap & Pulpit Rock

When I heard “Blue Mountains” for the 1st time, I thought it would be mountains which color was blue.

When I visited for the mountains (some decades ago,) it was “Echo Point” and it was an observation deck from which I could see magnificent view of canyon, and it was NOT a mountain at all.

[Echo Point at Blue Mountains,

[The Three Sisters from Echo Point,

Blue Mountains National Park is 2,680㎢ and more than Kanagawa Prefecture (2,416 ㎢). Most of the area is high plateau of 1,000 meters or a bit higher.

The train line called Blue Mountains Line goes to the area from Central Station in Sydney to Lithgow (about 127 km toward West.) Most of the stations I go for trekking are: Glenbrook, Wentworth Falls, Leura, Katoomba and Blackheath.

[The Blue Mountains Train,

The trains from Sydney go to Penrith, the edge of Greater Sydney City, then go across Nepean River and reach at the edge of Blue Mountains, Emu Plain.

From Emu Plain the trains go to the elevation of the plateau, the entrance of Blue Mountains called Glenbrook (the altitude of 200m).

The trains go higher and higher, and when they arrive at Wentworth Falls, the elevation reaches 860m, Leura, 990m and Katoomba, 1030m, and Blackheath 1,050m.

It takes about 2 hours from Central to Katoomba which is regarded as the base town of Blue Mountains. The distance between Central and Katoomba is 85 km and regular fare is 15 Australian dollars (about 1200 yen) one way.

I am benefitted using Senior Opal Card, which limits single day fare up to 2.5 A$ (about 200 yen) whatever I use.

They run Blue Mountains trains at least one in every hour. These trains are 4-carriage trains or 8-carriage trains.

One thing you must remember is that there are “quiet carriages” and non-quiet carriages.

The 1st and 4th carriages are “quiet carriages”( as 5th and 8th too in case of 8-carriage trains.)

If you get into the quiet carriage, you are not supposed to talk with your friends, and you are not supposed to use cell-phone for talking.

[The sign of "Quiet Carriage", 「

If you get on non-quiet carriage, you are free to enjoy conversations with your friends, or even using cell-phone for talking.

I go to Blue Mountains with my Korean friends at least twice a week. On Tuesday, I join Blue Mountains Club and we usually go to Wentworth Falls.

On Saturday, I join another hiking group called “Saturday Hiking Group.” Mostly we go to Leura and walk through Leura Forest and go to Katoomba.

April is the month of school holidays and you may call it autumn vacation. Most of culture activities I am taking are closed during the holiday season. So, I have extra days to spend for additional bush walking.

I went to Blackheath where I visited 3 times last year. Blackheath is two stations far from Katoomba, so my Korean friends usually do not go.

I visited Blackheath last October for the first time. They hold Rhododendron Festival in the 1st weekend of November every year. So, I visited there again with my wife and her friends in November.

[At the platform of Blackheath Stn.,

[At Rhododendron Garden、

Later, I happened to meet a Japanese couple who were visiting Blackheath, not for flower viewing, but for viewing magnificent canyons there.

[A Japanese couple I saw on the train,

Therefore, I made up my mind to visit again for bush-walking alone in April.

Here are the information about two trekking courses:

1) Destination: Govetts Leap

Trekking Course: Blackheath Station –> Popes Glen Track –> Govetts Leap -> Govetts Leap Road – Blackheath Station: 8 km, 2.5 hours

[The Map of Popes Glen Track、

There are two courses to reach “Govetts Leap.” An easier way is to walk “Govetts Leap Road” which starts from the train station to the lookout of “Govetts Leap.”

When you get off at the station, then walk back the street toward Katoomba direction. If you walk back for about100 meters, then you come to the intersection and a big sign says “Govetts Leap” pointing to left.

If you walk along the paved road for about 30 – 40 minutes, you will reach at “Govetts Leap.”

[A view from Govetts Leap,

[A view from Govetts Leap,

If you prefer bush-walk, then turn to left again when you see the sign “To Popes Glen Track.”

[A sign to Govetts Leep,

This track leads you through Memorial Park. The tack goes along a creek and not many hikers I saw. The whole distance is about 4 km, and you can reach the leap within an hour.

[At Popes Glen Track,

I personally recommend to go “Popes Glen Track” first, then use the paved road “Govetts Leap Road” for returning to the station. It may take you for about 40 minutes.

2) Destination: Pulpit Rock

Trekking Course: Blackheath Station –> Govetts Leap Road –> Govetts Leap –> Pulpit Rock Track –> Pulpit Rock –> Hat Hill Road – Blackheath Station: 14 km, 3.5 hours

[Map of Pulpit Rock Track、

If you want to visit Pulpit Rock, it takes another 3.5 km from Govetts Leap, but this walk is wonderful. You can enjoy the magnificent views of “Grand Canyon” while walking toward Pulpit Rock.

[Pulpit Rock Lookout,

You can see waterfalls running down from the cliff.

And Pulpit Rock is wonderful. It looks like “Pulpit” in a church. It is connected to the cliff, like the famous Three Sisters with Honeymoon Bridge. You can feel the sheer depth of cliff. Then you can walk toward the parking lot of Pulpit Rock.

[At Pulpit Rock Lookout,

The parking lot and the access road from Hat Hill Road were not paved as of April, 20, 2019. But you can drive from Blackleath Station easily. I walked for about 6 km and it took 1.5 hours from the parking lot to the station.

It was a nice walk of autumn in Blue Mountains.

[Autumnal colors in Blackheath、

According to i-phone healthcare application, the walking distance of the day; 18.7 km, 29,018 steps and equivalence of 41 story building.

(Pulpit Rock)]

(Pulpit Rock)

[The Three Sisters from Echo Point,

[The Map of Popes Glen Track、

[Fork point of Pulpit Rock Track,

[Horseshoe Falls、

[Pulpit Rock Lookout,

[Autumnal colors in Blackheath、
