KR (Kamakura Report) #3 “Oze National Park: Mt. Hiuchi (燧ヶ岳)and Mt. Shibutsu(至仏山)”

Typhoon Faxai (No.15) hit Kanto area Sep. 8-9 and some of my guide helper works were cancelled because of the typhoon. Yet I worked 24 missions in September.

My wife flew in Kamakura from Sydney on Sep. 13 and she joined me enjoining lives in Japan now.

As for my hobby life; climbing mountains, I went to Oze National Park (9/3 – 5) and North Yatsugatake Mountains (9/25 – 26) in September.

Here, I will report on hiking in Oze National Park(尾瀬国立公園.)

Just like my last hike in Mt. Okudainichi in Toyama Prefecture, it began with the bad weather.

I took the night bus on Sep. 3rd. There was thunder and heavy rain in Kanto area that day.

There was cloud-to-ground discharge in Yokohama, so I had difficulties to access Shinjuku Bus Terminal that evening.

I could manage to arrive on time of the night bus departure　(22:20.) There were a few passengers, yet the bus arrived at Oshimizu (大清水) next morning on time.

The bus arrived at Oshimizu (大清水) at 3:45 a.m. I had early breakfast and began walking at 4 a.m.

Shuttle buses go to Ichinose (一ノ瀬), but of course, there was no bus service before 7 am. Fortunately it was not raining, and I walked for 90 minutes with head light.

When I arrived at Ichinose, the day broke and it took another 90 minutes to arrive at Sampei Pass (三平峠) from Ichinose entrance.

It began to rain at Sampei Pass and when I arrived Lake Ozenuma (尾瀬沼), it was raining heavily.

I took a temporary shelter at Chozogoya (長蔵小屋) lodge. I also visited Oze Visitors’ Center there. Then the rain was letting up.

I began climbing Mt. Hiuchi by walking “Choeishindo(長英新道).” I found some bright-color mushrooms and a sleepy-eyed toad along the way.

There are two peaks in Mt. Hiuch; one is Manaitagura (俎嵓2346m) and the other is Shibayasugura (柴安嵓2356m).

Manaitagura was a pile of rocks. There was no hiker but me. There was only a wooden pole on the summit.

From Manaitagura to Shibayasugura, I walked down for about 50 meters, then I climbed up the steep slope for another 50 meters. When I arrived at Shibayasugura, there were two lady hikers on the summit.

I could see Ozegahara (尾瀬ヶ原) field from the summit clearly. I ate a cup noodle and some “onigiri” for my lunch.

When I began descending the summit, I slipped and fell down. I took the trail called “Miharashi Shindo (見晴新道)” but it was really a bad trail.

The slope was steep and muddy. I slipped 4 more times until I completely came down to Miharashi area.

There are several lodges in Miharashi and I checked in “Ozegoya (尾瀬小屋)” which is located next to Ozegahara field.

It was 4 p.m. so I just walked 12 hours that day. I could take a bath in the lodge and supper time was at 5:30 p.m.

Breakfast was served at 6 a.m. I had a good appetite and ate a couple of bowls of rice. I left the lodge at 6:30.

I walked on wooden trails toward Mt. Shibutu. Oze fields are divided into two parts: Fukushima side and Gunma side.

Oze field in Fukushima side looked like less water than Gunma side. I like Gunma side where there are more “chito　(池塘)” ponds with “Oze kohone (オゼコウホネNuphar japonica or East Asian yellow water-lily).”

Probably because of unfavorable weather, a few hikers walking in the field. I passed by only a few hikers that day.

I enjoyed nice views of Mt. Hiuchi when I looked back, and I also enjoyed viewing Mt. Shibutsu while waking ahead.

I reached at Yamanohama　(山の鼻) after walking for about 90 minutes. Yamanohana is at the bottom of Mt. Shibutsu. There are several lodges there. I took a short break there, then began climbing Mt. Shibutsu.

The track leads to the summit of Mt. Shibusu was much better than those of Mt. Hiuchi. There was no muddy part and I could see Oze Field whenever I looked down.

I reached at the summit of Mt. Shibutsu at around noon. There were several hikers, all together about 10 people.

I saw magnificent views of far-away mountains from the summit.

It took about two hours from the summit to “Hatomachi Pass (鳩待峠)” from which shuttle buses are available to Tokura (戸倉).

I was supposed to change buses but I misunderstood the bus stop for the direct bus to Shinjuku from Tokura.

When I realized my mistake, it was after the direct bus gone.

I had to take a local bus to Numata (沼田) from Tokura. Then I took JR train from Numata to Ofuna via Takasaki (高崎).

My carelessness cost extra time and expense that day. I should be more careful when I travel next time.

KR (Kamakura Report) #3「尾瀬国立公園」

9月のガイド・ヘルパー活動は、台風の影響によるキャンセルもあり24件だった。8月に比べれば炎天下のエスコート事例は少なかったがそれでも汗を流した。

９月中旬には妻がシドニーから一時帰国し、日本での共同生活を楽しんでいる。

趣味の登山活動は9月3日～５日の尾瀬一泊旅行と下旬の9月25日～26日の北八ヶ岳とどちらも単独山行を楽しんだ。

今回は尾瀬国立公園の燧ヶ岳及び至仏山の登山を紹介する。

9月上旬の尾瀬山行は8月の富山県の奥大日同様、天候は雨天で始まった。9月3日の夜は雷雨で、横浜では落雷があり、夜行バス(22:20発)の新宿ターミナルへのアクセスに多少困難があった。

悪天候のためか乗客は10人未満で大清水に9月4日の早朝3時45分に到着。早い朝食後、一ノ瀬に向かって登山を開始した時、雨は止んでいた。

大清水から一ノ瀬までは道路が整備され、シャトルバスも出ているようだ。約1時間半、車道を進んで、一ノ瀬から山道に入る。

一ノ瀬からさらに1時間半、山道を進んだとこで三平峠に到達したころ降り出した雨は、尾瀬沼に到着し、長蔵小屋付近で本降りになった。

長蔵小屋の無料休憩所で休憩し、ビジターズセンターを見学しているうちに雨は小降りになったので燧ヶ岳(2356m)山頂を目指して登山を決行した。

登山道の長英新道は小川のように水が流れていたが、途中でカラフルなキノコや、眠たそうな目をしたヒキガエルに遭遇した。

大清水でバスから降りて登山を開始してから約8時間、12時半に最初の山頂に到達した。

燧岳の山頂は2つあり、1つは俎嵓(まないたぐら)で、もう１つは柴安嵓(しばやすぐら)である。

俎嵓は岩だらけの山頂で足場も悪く、自分以外に人はいなかった。

俎嵓をいったん下り、山の背を抜け、再び急坂を登ると柴安嵓であり、時刻は午後1時。

柴安嵓には立派な標石もあり、たぶん私と同年配の女性のハイカー2人が休憩中だった。

このころ雨は完全に上がり、眼下に尾瀬ヶ原が見えてきた。

燧ヶ岳からの下りは見晴新道を使った。この道は実に悪路で、勾配が急でしかもぬかるみ、なんと5回も滑って転倒してしまった。

午前4時に登山を開始してちょうど12時間後の午後4時に山小屋の密集する見晴に到着した。

今回は尾瀬ヶ原に一番近い、尾瀬小屋で一泊した。山小屋の入浴時刻に間に合い、入浴後おいしい夕食をたべた。

至仏山登山。午後は雨になると言われ、行程を急いだ。朝は6時朝食で、若者グループはその前に出発したようだ。朝から食欲があり、飯は2回お代わりした。

至仏山は上部が雲の中だが、燧ケ岳は全容がみえた。福島県側は水が少なく、原の部分が勝っているようだが、群馬県側は池塘も多く、オゼコウホネの葉の紅葉が始まっていた。

ハイカーは少なく、途中から後ろについた女性二人組が追いかけられるようで気になった。尾瀬ヶ原横断は1時間半。至仏山荘前で休憩。

山の鼻からの登山道は見晴らし新道に比べれば雲泥の差でぬかるみもなく歩きやすい。

尾瀬ヶ原を眼下に見ながら気持ち良い登りで、山頂にはちょうど正午についた。山頂付近は単独ハイカーが３～4人、3人組が１グループのみだった。

至仏の山標は立派なもので、昼食はカップラーメンと残ったにぎり飯で、小至仏に向かった。

尾根道も快適で、鳩待ち峠には14:15に到着。看板には次のバスは14:30となっていたが、すぐに出るからと言われて乗り合いタクシーに乗って戸倉へ向かった。

戸倉からは帰路の乗り合いバスに乗り換えなければならなかったが、この連結が悪く、乗り合いタクシーで降ろされた場所で新宿行きのバスを待っていたら、予定の時刻になってもバスが現れない。

バス乗り場はタクシーで降りた場所から約100m離れた日帰り温泉の隣だった。

新宿直行バスはすでに出た後だったので、やむを得ず、沼田行きのローカルバスに乗り、沼田からJRで高崎に出て、高崎から東海道線に乗り換えて大船へ戻った。

帰路は私の勘違い、不注意により、時間を費用が余分にかかることとなった。

次回はこのようなことがないよう、注意深く行動したい。

KR (Kamakura Report) #2 “Mt. Okudainichi、Small Trip to Hokuriku Area (Kanazawa Castle, Fukui Dinosaur Museum”)

I resumed my work as “Guide Helper,” upon returning to Japan. I worked 22 cases in July and 27 cases in August. My mission is to guide my clients, mostly with mental disabilities, from one place to another. Sometimes, we take public transportations such as trains and buses.

I report available dates to my boss in advance so that I can plan my own schedule in advance.

I took a short summer vacation, utilizing “Hokuriku Free-Area Ticket) in the 4th week of August.

On August 21, I took “Kagayaki (high-speed Sinkansen Train Service between Tokyo and Kanazawa)” early in the morning, and saw my good friend in Toyama.

He drove his car and we got off at Tateyama Cable Statin, and took the cable car and bus to Murodo Terminal in the Tateyama Highland (altitude 2,450 m.)

K reserved a lodge called “Mikurigaike Lodge,” but when we arrived at lodge, it was like a storm. We gave up our plan for trekking around the lodge on the first day.

They have natural hot spring there. We enjoyed taking hot spring and had a drinking party in stead of hiking.

The supper they served at the lodge was very nice and delicious but weather was terrible. After having supper, we took hot spring again and went to bed rather early evening.

“Climbing Mt. Okudainichi(2,611m)”

The wind was dead next morning. We left the lodge at 5 am, although it was raining hard, we determined to climb Mt. Okudainichi.

We went down the slope and walked toward “Raichozawa Camping Area.” There is a river called “Jodosawa” and we crossed the bridge to the mountainous side.

After turning left, we began climbing the slope toward a fork point of Tsurugidake and Dainichidake.

It was still raining hard and the trail on the ridge was like a small river, water was running on the trails.

The rain subsided from time to time. Then “raicho” or “ptarmigan” appeared in front of us. They looked like a mother and her chicks. They look just cute.

When we walked about 3 hours, we came to a scree-covered slope where the track was not clear.

I was following K as he had walking this track before. But when he began climbing the slope, I felt strange, and I doubted that we were walking the right track.

I suggested to walk back and he listened to my suggestion and we slowly and carefully went back.

It was the moment of coming back to the safe hiking. Soon we came to the top of Mt. Okudainichi.

It took 3 hours and half one way. So the round trip took 7 hours, and walking distance is about 18 km.

We changed clothes at Murodo Terminal and went down to Tateyama Station by 3 pm. K’s house is near Takaoka, so he sent me to Toyoko-Inn Takaoka, just in front of Takaoka Station.

[Small Trip in Hokuriku Area: Kanazawa Castle]

I stayed overnight at Toyoko-Inn Takaoka. It was my 11th time to use “Toyoko-Inn” therefore I got a free stay including breakfast.

Then I went to Kanazawa by Shinkansen. It was my 3rd visit of this old town.

Kenrokuen is the famous garden, but I visited there about 50 years ago. It was a capital of Kaga Han during the Edo period (1600 – 1868).

They have restored the Kamazawa Castle, so far so good.

They are still in the process of restoration of the castle. But it was my first time to visit the castle. It was beautiful and it reminded me of my visit on Matsumoto Castle last year.

Then I returned to Kanazawa Station, and took a special limited train to Fukui, another capital city of neighboring Prefecture.

Fukuki is famous for the discovery of dinosaur fossils in Japan. There is a prefectural dinosaur museum in Katsuyama city, about one hour train ride from Fukui.

There was a special exhibition “Brain Power of Dinosaurs” at the museum. I bought a senior discount ticket including the transportation fee from Fukuki (2600 yen → 2000 yen) and I did visit this wonderful museum.

This museum is one of the Big Three Dinosaur Museum in the world. There are 44 complete set of dinosaurs in the exhibition hall. I really enjoyed the sightseeing of the museum.

On the way back to Ofuna, every connection of transportation was good and smooth, that I could come back to Ofuna around 7 pm that day.

It was a short abut satisfactory trip to Hokuriku his summer.

KR (Kamakura Report) #2「奥大日岳、北陸小旅行(金沢城・恐竜博物館)」

私は先月、帰国するとすぐに「ガイド・ヘルパー」の仕事を再開した。7月は22件、8月は27件のガイド・ヘルパーの仕事をした。「ガイド・ヘルパーの仕事」とは主に知的障害を持つクライアントの外出を手助けする仕事で、公共交通機関を含む外出をエスコートする仕事である。

この仕事は所属するNPOにあらかじめ稼働可能な日を報告し、その範囲内でミッションを与えられるので、自分のための日をあらかじめ避けてミッションをもらうことが可能である。

八月は第4週に3泊4日の北陸小旅行を計画した。今回はJR東日本がシニアに提供する「北陸フリー切符」を利用した。

8月21日、北陸新幹線の「かがやき」に乗って、まず富山の山友Kに会った。我々は彼の車で立山駅に行き、ケーブルカーで美女平へ行き、バスに乗り継いで標高2450mの室堂へ向った。

この日はあいにくの天気で、室堂付近は風雨が強く、室堂ターミナルからみくりが池山荘までのわずか1000m足らずの尾根歩きでずぶ濡れになった。

山荘に午前中に到着したものの、風雨はひどくなる一方だったので、この日の外歩きはあきらめ、山荘自慢の「日本一標高の高い」温泉に入り、S君と昼間から宴会をしてしまった。

宴会後に再度温泉を楽しんだが、外は暴風雨で、恐ろしい風の音が深夜まで止まなかった。

「奥大日岳(2,611m)登頂」

翌朝、強風は止んだ。同行者のKはみくりが池からキャンプ場を経由して大日岳へのルートを経験している。彼の判断で雨中山行を決めた。

山荘を5時に出発。みくりが池を右手にみて雷鳥沢キャンプ場へ下る途中は火山性ガス注意の掲示があり、風向きによっては通行禁止となる。

この付近は箱根の地獄谷に似て植物が生えない不毛の地。硫黄のにおいもきつい。

キャンプ場の前方には水量豊かな称名川が流れていて、この川にかかっている橋を渡って下流に100mほど下ったところに尾根にあがる登山路がある。

この登山路を登るころ雨脚が激しくなってきた。尾根へ上がる最後のステップで剱岳へ行く道との分岐点にでた。

尾根道が川のように水が流れる道を左折して大日岳の方面に進んだ。雨は時折小降りになる。すると目の前に雷鳥の親子が歩いている。

かれらも尾根道が良いようで、10分ほどまるでわれわれの先導をするかのように進み、広い原にでると尾根道を外れて原に入っていった。

朝5時に出発して3時間ほどたったころ、先を行くKがガレ場でかなり急こう配の坂を上り始めた。浮き石もあって危険だ。

後を行く私はガレ場を巻くように進む登山路が見えた。Kは迷い道をしたかもしれないという。私は戻ったほうが良いと訴え、結局、ガレ場の下へ戻って正解だった。

雨はこのころもっとも激しく、今考えれば今回の山行の一番の危機だった時間だった。

正規の登山路に戻って約30分後、突然奥大日岳の標識が見えた。幸い雨も小降りになり、認証写真を撮った。

下山はずっと楽で、雨は時折激しく振ったが、無事室堂ターミナルへ昼前に到着した。

室堂ターミナルでずぶ濡れになった服を着替え、麓の立山駅に午後3時ごろ下山。Kの車で高岡駅前の東横インへ送ってもらった。

[北陸小旅行・金沢城]

翌日、東横インの朝食はいつも私のお気に入りだが、高岡の朝食は特においしかった。おにぎりとサラダとトーストは定番だが、お茶漬けが特においしかった。

高岡駅から新幹線で金沢に出た。金沢は市内バスで金沢城に向かった。兼六園と金沢城は隣り合っているが、前者は以前訪問したことがあるので、金沢城のみ見学した。

金沢城は江戸時代は加賀百万石の前田藩の居城であり、江戸時代及び明治時代に焼失したが、2001年に第1期復元工事が完了し、現在も復元工事が進行中である。

2006年には日本100名城に選定され、私は広々とした城址公園を急ぎ足で見学した。

その後、金沢から特急に乗って福井へ行った。福井は日本で最も多く恐竜の化石が発見された場所であり、そこの県立恐竜博物館は、世界三大恐竜博物館の１つと言われている。

JR福井駅からのアクセスはえちぜん鉄道で約１時間の勝山駅からバスに乗り換え、約10分で、往復の交通費と入館料金がセットでシニア割引200円である。

ガイヘルの仕事で昨年、東京で開催された恐竜展を見たが、ここに展示されている恐竜の規模はその10倍以上ではないかと思った。(展示されている恐竜の全骨格は44体。)

またこの日は「恐竜の脳力」というテーマで特別展が開催されていた。

帰路はバス・えちぜん鉄道・および在来線の特急それに北陸新幹線の接続が非常によく、午後7時には大船駅に戻ることができた。2泊3日の短い夏休みであったが達成感があった。
