SR #26 “GNW: The Longest One Day Walk” “Restart of Thursday Hike” “Taichi by Zoom”
“GNW: The Longest One Day Walk”
The Great North Walk (or GNW) is a 250 km path from central Sydney to downtown Newcastle in Australia. It is a truly wonderful trail following many tracks through a bewildering array of natural and urban environments.
There are 30 short tracks from Sydney to Newcastle.
http://www.thegreatnorthwalk.com/track/
Chatswood locates in the north of Sydney, so I am familiar with many parts of the 1st section to the 4th section. But not so from the 5th section (from Macquarie Park to Thornleigh.)
Isaac, an ardent hiker of Saturday Hiking Group, joined me for this new explore of walking GNW every week.
We usually access start-points by train, and after arriving at destinations, we go back by train.
When we tried No. 7 (from Hornsby to Galston Gorge) and No. 8 (from Galston Gorge to Mt. Kuring-Gai), we had a problem. There is no public transportation to/from Galston Gorge.
According to the explanation of the above site, #7 section is a 4 hour 9.7 km one way hike and #8 section is a 5.5 hour 12.6 km one way hike and both are hard tracks.
If we walk these two sections for one day, it will be a 9.5 hour 22.3 km walk. So we started at Hornsby station at 8:30 am on Aug. 11.
[Isaac on Blue Gum Walk of GNW, GNWの「ブルーガムウォーク」,GNW의 "블루 검 워크"]、
First half of #7 section was all right but we lost the GNW mark, therefore, we began using GSP function of our smartphones, and walked the paved road to Gaston Gorge.
We arrived at the gorge at 12:30.
[At Galston Gorge,
There were much water in the gorge, so, walking the paved road was safer than walking GNW.
After having quick lunch, we began walking the #8 section before 1 pm. Most part of section 8 is along the part of the big river or a shallow bay.
[At Berowra Valley National Park,
However we had to walk across small cleeks.
When we arrived Crossland, about the middle of the section, it was already after 4 pm. Moreover, we took the wrong trail, not to Mt. Kuring-Gai, but the trail to Berowra.
[At Crossland Wet Field,
Along the GNW, we could see the marks, but it is difficult when it gets dark. When we arrived at the point from where the statin was only 2 km, it was completely dark.
[The mark of GNW(Great North Walk), GNWの標識、GNW 표지판]
Isaac had a head-light, but I did not have one. Unfortunately his head-light did not work. We had to use our smartphones as flashlights and at the same time we also use GSP functions.
[Sun-set at the Berowra Valley,
When we lost GNW marks, it was only 500 meters from the station. But that 500 was really ordeal for us. We barely went through this crisis and arrived near city street at around 7 pm.
Total walking distance for that day was 34.6 km, 48,057 steps, and 120 floors (My health app counts 3 meter elevation as 1 floor.)
We both thanked God for his protection from any possible harms, but we must be more careful for planning, and preparation in the future.
“Restart of Thursday Hike”
Before this COVIT-19 pandemic situation, I used to walk with some Chinese friends and a Japanese friend every Thursday.
The leader is called Marshall from Taiwan. His parents came to Taiwan from mainland China and he was born in Taiwan in 1949.
He is a fluent speaker of English and he really knows well about this neighborhood trekking courses. He also knows local plants and often explains about these plants.
[Traveler's banana,

During the lock down period, my Japanese friends in Japan shifted the face-to-face meeting to zoom meeting. When they started zoom meeting, I joined this English study group, Day-KEC meeting on Thursday.
[Day KEC Zoom Presentation、Day KEC
That’s why even the lockdown ended in June, I could not join Thursday hiking group.
But Marshall suggested that the trekking activities be held in the afternoon. So I leave the zoom meeting 30 minutes early, then I meet Marshall at 1:30 pm at Salvation Army Chatswood. We enjoy 2 ~ 3 hour bushwalks every Thursday.
[Marchall at Davidson Park,
Marshall is not a Christian. But he does not hesitate to talk about religion. He does not hesitate to talk about the world histories including the Japanese armies brutal acts in China. Sometimes we have heated discussion. But I am happy to listen to his opinions of different perspective.
[Middle Cove National Park,
However he takes me for trekking within radius of 10 kilometers from our houses, and they are many scenic areas of residential zone.
“Taichi by Zoom”
Wednesday is busy with zoom meeting. I usually attend Aussie’s Bible Study every Wednesday morning, and Japanese Taichi class in the afternoon.
Now the both meetings are being conducted by zoom meeting because of COCIT-19.
As for Taichi lessons, it was organized by the Japanese Society in Chatswood.
The teacher, Mr. Hosaka has been in Sydney several decades. He was born in 1930s. Yet he is very active and teaches us Taichi kindly.
[Mr. Hosaka at the new year party,
[At New Year Party befor COVIT-19 Pandemic,
Some of the members used to have chatting at the lounge of Chatswood RSL bar over some sips of beverage. I became a member of RSL in January. Then this the lockdown came.
However, in August, they re-started this Taichi lessens by utilizing zoom functions. I am happy to see Mr. H again, and other Japanese friends every Wednesday afternoon.
I really hope that the situation becomes much better and we can meeting face-to-face again, and enjoy sipping at RLS bar from time to time in the near future.

http://www.thegreatnorthwalk.com/track/
[Isaac on Blue Gum Walk of GNW, GNWの「ブルーガムウォーク」,GNW의 "블루 검 워크"]、
[At Galston Gorge,
[At Crossland Wet Field,
[The mark of GNW(Great North Walk), GNWの標識、GNW 표지판]
[Sun-set at the Berowra Valley,
[The mark says "2 km from the station",「駅から2km」という標識、"역에서 2km '라는 표지판]
[Marchall at Davidson Park,
[Day KEC Zoom Presentation、Day KEC
[At Lyrebird Track、
[At New Year Party of Japanese Taichi Group,
I like hiking very much. I used to go hiking with a Korean hiking club named “AhToSan.” This blog introduces mostly my hiking activities in Korea and Japan, and Sydney in Australia. As of January 2020, I live in Sydney suburb. I go Blue Mountains and bush walk in Sydney area.

“Extension of Parent Visa,” “Lost & Found: I regained my camera which I lost in Mt. Victoria,” and “The Great North Walk: Starting Point, Macquarie Place”
“Extension of Parent Visa”
My wife and I got parent visa and permanent residency granted in August 2015. Parent visa expires in August 2020 and we needed to live in Australia totally for 24 months or longer in these 5 years. We applied for its extension in July 12 and its extension was granted for another 5 years.
It means we can travel to Japan for unlimited period until July 2025. But the travel circumstances have changed drastically in the past 5 months due to the corona pandemic. Almost all countries in the world closed their borders.
It is possible to return to Japan but when we want to come back to Australia, we must isolate ourselves in a hotel for 14 days by our cost.
[Confirmed cases, cumulative count in Australia,
While the situation of NSW where we live has been stable since the middle of April, the situation of the state of Victoria is getting worse than the first wave. Now the state has been lockdown and wearing face masks are the norm of everyday life in the state of Victoria.
[New confirmed cases, daily count, VCT,
Personally, I had never worn masks until recently when I attended a memorial service for the late Mr. David Hayman who was called for heaven on July 2, 2020.
[Mr. Hayman's Memorial Service leaflet,
Mr. Hayman (96) had been sent to Hokkaido, Japan for more than 3 decades and had friendship relations with the famous Christian write Miura Ayako
“Lost & Found: I regained my camera which I lost in Mt. Victoria”
I went to Mt. Victoria with my fellow Korean hikers on July 18 (Saturday). I guided 4 hikers to the trekking course there.
Mt. Victoria station is the third station far from Katoomba, more than 100 km west from Central station in Sydney. We took early train leaving Central at 8:18. Two of my friends joined me at Strathfield, and two more from Parramatta. We arrived at Mt. Victoria at 10:45.
It took about 30 minutes from Mt. Victoria station to Pulpit Rock, the entrance of the trail called “Little Zig Zag.”
“Pulpit” means a raised structure inside a church that a priest or minister stands on when they speak to the people.
[A view from Pulpit Rock,
It is a good lookout from where you get a magnificent view of canyon and I took a group picture with my compact camera.
[A group picture at Pulpit Rock,
We began descending the Little Zig Zag track toward the bottom of the valley. After 20 minute descending, then we have to climb the steep slope for about 40 minutes. It was really a steep trail, and we need to use hands to grab vines and rocks and push ourselves up. I was behind all my fiends when we came up to the cliff.
When we reached to the trail above the cliff, I suddenly realized that I lost my camera. I usually keep my camera in the camera case attached to my waist. I realized that it was empty. I shouted to my friends but they were out of reach of my voice. I put my bag there and hurried back to the bottom of the valley. Unfortunately I couldn’t find my camera.
All my friends returned back to the point where I left my bag. They worried about me because I was not there. One of them called me while I was climbing the steep track. I told them that I lost my camera and told them to go ahead but they patiently waited for me (about 40 minutes!).
I was pleased that they waited for me. I thought I lost my camera, but I did not lose their friendship. I completely gave up my camera because I did not put any sign of my identity to the camera.
[At One Three Hill at Mt. Victoria,
After completing the little zig zag track, we walked to Mt. Piddington. After taking some group pictures with my smart-phone, we went back to Mt. Victoria station.
On the way back to Central station, two of my friends got off at Parramatta, and other two at Strathfild, I got a phone call from my wife.
She told me that our daughter-in-law got a call from an police officer. Constable Coffa of Katoomba Police Station. He got my camera and called Louise, my daughter-in-law.
Later I went to pick up my camera at Katoomba Station and I realized that I did not drop my camera, but forgot to put it back to my camera case. I simply left it with tripod with it. And Constable Coffa found my daughter-in-law’s phone number because one of picture files, her automobile plate number was in it together with her children.
[Grandchildren and the car,
[The camera with tripod I regained,
I really thanked a person who found my camera with tripod at Pulpit Rock and picked it up and reported it to a police station and Constable Coffa who checked the images in the camera and searched the plate number of the car in it and called my daughter-in-law and of course, and Almighty God who cares me so much.
“The Great North Walk: Starting Point, Macquarie Place”
“The Great North Walk is a walking track which runs from Sydney to Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia. The main track, 250 kilometres (160 mi) in length, runs between the Obelisk in Macquarie Place in Sydney to Queens Wharf in Bicentennial Park in Newcastle and is well sign-posted. There are many "side tracks" which link the track to populated areas along the length of the walk. The walk includes a huge variety of wildlife and scenery.”
Quoted from Wikipedia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_North_Walk
I found another website which introduces this 250 km track divided into 30 sections.
http://www.thegreatnorthwalk.com/track/ I have already walked some of these 30 sections including Lane Cove National Park from Chatswood to Epping, Hornsby, Berowra, etc. But I had never visited Macquarie Place, the starting point of the Great North Walk (GNW).
So I visited Macquarie Place on 14 July, 2020. I got off at Circular Quay, the railway station near the historical place.
Macquarie Place is just 5 minute walk from Circular Quay station on the other side of Sydney Piers.
The obelisk was built in 1811, one of the oldest milestones in Australia.
[The obelisk at Macquarie Place,
There are relic of colony period, the Sirius anchor and cannon that were salvaged from the sea in the early 19th century.
[The salvaged Sirius anchor、
The first section of GNW is from Macquarie Place to Boronia Park in Hunters Hill Peninsula.
According the GNW track website, first section starts from Macquarie Place to Circular Quay, then take a ferry to Woolwich Wharf. Then from Woolwich Warf to Boronia Park via Hunters Hill Peninsula.
On July 14, I did not know this formal route, so I walked to Harbour Bridge, and crossed the bridge and walked to Milson Point station.
The Sydney Harbour Bridge was open in March 1932. I once took a tour walking over the arch in 2012.
[The Sydney Harbour Bridge,
T1 trains connecting City and Newcastle run over this bridge everyday. M1 highway also goes over the bridge. There are a pedestrians-only path on the Pacific side, and a bicycles-only path on the other side.
[The path way for pedestrians,
It’s a 1.6 km long path, and you can enjoy the great views of the harbour and elegant view of Sydney Opera House.
[A view from the Sydney Harbour Bridge,
On that day I walked over the bridge, it was raining and it blew strong wind. When I arrived at Milson Point station, the rain and wind became furious and I gave up walking there.
Besides the Blue Mountains area, I set a new target: the Great North Walk. I’d like to explore this new target, total 30 sections.
The infection of COVIT-19 seems still far from the end. It means, we cannot go back to Japan in the near future.
It is important to stay in healthy, both physically and mentally. It is important not to be infected by the virus. At the same time, we need to strengthen our immune system and get rid of worries in the future.
As Hippocrates says “Walking is the best medicine,” I try to keep walking everyday, and here in Australia, the Great North Walk” is my new area of challenge in that regard.

[A group picture at Pulpit Rock,
[At Mt.
[Lunch at a park in Mt. Victoria,
[The camera with tripod I regained,
[Grandchildren and the car,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_North_Walk
http://www.thegreatnorthwalk.com/track/
[The obelisk at Macquarie Place,
{The salvaged anchor and cannon,

While the situation of NSW where we live has been stable since the middle of April, the situation of the state of Victoria is getting worse than the first wave. Now the state has been lockdown and wearing face masks are the norm of everyday life in the state of Victoria.

“The Great North Walk: Epping to Chatswood”
Here in NSW, the government relaxed its restriction on June 1. Now we can travel 50 km or more within NSW. We can visit the Blue Mountains which is about 100 km west from the city.
Before going to the Blue Mountains, I walked a part of “The Great North Walk” which is located in my neighborhood. My Korean friends took me to this part after Berowra-Hornsby portion last month.
[Access to the Great North Walk at Epping, 「
I tried to confirm this track from Chatswood to Epping on June 12. It was cloudy and began to rain when I lost my way after walking for 4 or 5 hours. It was because the guideposts were not clear.
[The Wale Rock,
I challenged the same rout again but different direction; from Epping to Chatswood on June 19. This was easier because I could remember the same way when my Korean friends took me last month.
Walking distance may be almost same; 20 km, but the time was different; it was 4.5 hours when I walked with my friends, but it took 6 hours when I walked alone.
[Short break near Lane Cove River,
You can enjoy bush walk; nature, vegetation, animals, but you cannot expect splendid sceneries like the Blue Mountains. It is just a rain forest.
“Wentworth Falls: Overcliff Track,”
NSW government relaxed the restriction due to COVIT-19 this month. We can travel 50 km or more within the state. The tracks in the Blue Mountains are also open.
So I called my Korean friends to go to the Blue Mountains on Saturday. They are mostly 60s, a bit younger then me. Those who came this month were not original members. They are rather new members.
[A view from Conservation Hut Cafe,
Therefore, I propose the course, and if they agree, I guide them. On June 13, I guided them to “Overcliff Track” in Wentworth Falls, which had been under construction for a long time, and recently re-opened.
[At Queen Victoria Outlook,
Wentworth Falls Station is the second stations before Katoomba. “Charles Darwin Walk” is now closed for the track work. So, we had to walk about 2 km from the station to “Conservation Hut Café” which is located at the entrance of the several tracks.
Visitors can see magnificent view of the Blue Mountains from the terrace. That day, we could see “sea of clouds” at lookouts and it is a rare occasion.
[At Lyrebird Lookout,
Climbing mountains in Japan and Korea means, approaching mountains and start walking at lowest point and walking up to the summit, then coming down. But here in Australia, at least at the Blue Mountains, we start walking at highest level, then walk down to the canyon, and then coming back to the high level.
Along the course, there are several “lookouts” from which you can enjoy good views. This time, there were 5 outlooks as below;
1) Queen Victoria Lookout
2) Lyrebird Lookout
3) Breakfast Lookout
[At Breakfast Lookout,
4) Den Fenella Lookout
[At Den Fenella Lookout、
5) Jamison Lookout
[At Jamison Lookout,
I guided my Korean friends to these lookouts one after another. The sea of clouds were gradually evaporating, but we could enjoy every scenery with the clouds and we were all satisfied with beautiful scenes.
“Golden Anniversary
My wife and I got married in June, 1970. We were 22 years old. Since I entered Nippon Telephone and Telegraph Public Corporation (NTTPC) as a high school graduate, I wanted to enter the intra-NTTPC college very much and I was studying English very hard.
I was listening to an NHK educational program, “English Conversation” and the radio-lecturer, Dr. Toru Matsumoto and his stuff members organized “English Study Camp” at Hachioji College Seminar in March 1970. I joined the study camp and there I met a lady whom I married 3 months later.
Our first son, Hajime was born in 1971 and the second son, Ryo, in 1972. After 4 year failure, I passed the entrance examination of Intra-NTTPC college in 1975 and I experienced 2-year boarding college life in my late 20s.
I keep studying English since then. I added Korean language and now Chinese language to my life-long study.
Fortunately, I could experience the life in Korea from 2003 to 2014 and became to know many good Korean friends, as well as some international friends.
Our first son studied in a university in Sydney and got master and doctor degrees at UTS. He got a job and wife in Australia and now he has lived longer in Australia than in Japan. His wife is from Shanghai in China and now they have 4 kids (3 girls and one boy).
Thanks to their effort, my wife and I got “Parent Visa” and Permanent Residency in 2015.
Come to think of it, 50 years ago, when we got married, we were not sure what kind of family we get. 50 years later, my first son formed a big family of 6 in Sydney, Australia, our second son got a family of three in Tomioka-machi in Fukushima, Japan.
And we are living in Sydney, renewing “Parent Visa” and hoping to have “Golden year travel” in Japan.
Due to COVIT-19 restriction in Australia and Japan, it seems difficult to do soon after the anniversary date; June 28, 2020, but we can hope to carry out this plan in the near future.

[Near "Whale Rock" with my fellow hikers, 「
[The Wale Rock,
[Dinner after the hike with friends,
[A view from Conservation Hut Cafe,
[At Queen Victoria Outlook,
[At Lyrebird Lookout,

[At Jamison Lookout,

Therefore, I propose the course, and if they agree, I guide them. On June 13, I guided them to “Overcliff Track” in Wentworth Falls, which had been under construction for a long time, and recently re-opened.

Climbing mountains in Japan and Korea means, approaching mountains and start walking at lowest point and walking up to the summit, then coming down. But here in Australia, at least at the Blue Mountains, we start walking at highest level, then walk down to the canyon, and then coming back to the high level.
Along the course, there are several “lookouts” from which you can enjoy good views. This time, there were 5 outlooks as below;
1) Queen Victoria Lookout
2) Lyrebird Lookout
3) Breakfast Lookout

4) Den Fenella Lookout

5) Jamison Lookout

[The Wale Rock,

[At Queen Victoria Outlook,
[At Lyrebird Lookout,

[At Jamison Lookout,
