“The Great North Walk: Epping to Chatswood,” “Wentworth Falls: Overcliff Track,” “Golden Anniversary”

“The Great North Walk: Epping to Chatswood”

Here in NSW, the government relaxed its restriction on June 1. Now we can travel 50 km or more within NSW. We can visit the Blue Mountains which is about 100 km west from the city.

Before going to the Blue Mountains, I walked a part of “The Great North Walk” which is located in my neighborhood. My Korean friends took me to this part after Berowra-Hornsby portion last month.

[Access to the Great North Walk at Epping, 「

I tried to confirm this track from Chatswood to Epping on June 12. It was cloudy and began to rain when I lost my way after walking for 4 or 5 hours. It was because the guideposts were not clear.

[The Wale Rock,

I challenged the same rout again but different direction; from Epping to Chatswood on June 19. This was easier because I could remember the same way when my Korean friends took me last month.

Walking distance may be almost same; 20 km, but the time was different; it was 4.5 hours when I walked with my friends, but it took 6 hours when I walked alone.

[Short break near Lane Cove River,

You can enjoy bush walk; nature, vegetation, animals, but you cannot expect splendid sceneries like the Blue Mountains. It is just a rain forest.

“Wentworth Falls: Overcliff Track,”

NSW government relaxed the restriction due to COVIT-19 this month. We can travel 50 km or more within the state. The tracks in the Blue Mountains are also open.

So I called my Korean friends to go to the Blue Mountains on Saturday. They are mostly 60s, a bit younger then me. Those who came this month were not original members. They are rather new members.

[A view from Conservation Hut Cafe,

Therefore, I propose the course, and if they agree, I guide them. On June 13, I guided them to “Overcliff Track” in Wentworth Falls, which had been under construction for a long time, and recently re-opened.

[At Queen Victoria Outlook,

Wentworth Falls Station is the second stations before Katoomba. “Charles Darwin Walk” is now closed for the track work. So, we had to walk about 2 km from the station to “Conservation Hut Café” which is located at the entrance of the several tracks.

Visitors can see magnificent view of the Blue Mountains from the terrace. That day, we could see “sea of clouds” at lookouts and it is a rare occasion.

[At Lyrebird Lookout,

Climbing mountains in Japan and Korea means, approaching mountains and start walking at lowest point and walking up to the summit, then coming down. But here in Australia, at least at the Blue Mountains, we start walking at highest level, then walk down to the canyon, and then coming back to the high level.

Along the course, there are several “lookouts” from which you can enjoy good views. This time, there were 5 outlooks as below;

1) Queen Victoria Lookout

2) Lyrebird Lookout

3) Breakfast Lookout

[At Breakfast Lookout,

4) Den Fenella Lookout

[At Den Fenella Lookout、

5) Jamison Lookout

[At Jamison Lookout,

I guided my Korean friends to these lookouts one after another. The sea of clouds were gradually evaporating, but we could enjoy every scenery with the clouds and we were all satisfied with beautiful scenes.

“Golden Anniversary

My wife and I got married in June, 1970. We were 22 years old. Since I entered Nippon Telephone and Telegraph Public Corporation (NTTPC) as a high school graduate, I wanted to enter the intra-NTTPC college very much and I was studying English very hard.

I was listening to an NHK educational program, “English Conversation” and the radio-lecturer, Dr. Toru Matsumoto and his stuff members organized “English Study Camp” at Hachioji College Seminar in March 1970. I joined the study camp and there I met a lady whom I married 3 months later.

Our first son, Hajime was born in 1971 and the second son, Ryo, in 1972. After 4 year failure, I passed the entrance examination of Intra-NTTPC college in 1975 and I experienced 2-year boarding college life in my late 20s.

I keep studying English since then. I added Korean language and now Chinese language to my life-long study.

Fortunately, I could experience the life in Korea from 2003 to 2014 and became to know many good Korean friends, as well as some international friends.

Our first son studied in a university in Sydney and got master and doctor degrees at UTS. He got a job and wife in Australia and now he has lived longer in Australia than in Japan. His wife is from Shanghai in China and now they have 4 kids (3 girls and one boy).

Thanks to their effort, my wife and I got “Parent Visa” and Permanent Residency in 2015.

Come to think of it, 50 years ago, when we got married, we were not sure what kind of family we get. 50 years later, my first son formed a big family of 6 in Sydney, Australia, our second son got a family of three in Tomioka-machi in Fukushima, Japan.

And we are living in Sydney, renewing “Parent Visa” and hoping to have “Golden year travel” in Japan.

Due to COVIT-19 restriction in Australia and Japan, it seems difficult to do soon after the anniversary date; June 28, 2020, but we can hope to carry out this plan in the near future.

[Near "Whale Rock" with my fellow hikers, 「

[The Wale Rock,

[Dinner after the hike with friends,

[A view from Conservation Hut Cafe,

[At Queen Victoria Outlook,

[At Lyrebird Lookout,

[At Jamison Lookout,

SR # 23

“COVIT-19 Status Quo in Australia,” “Easing COVID-19 restrictions in NSW,” “The Great North Walk Trekking”

“COVIT-19 Status Quo in Australia,”

Total confirmed cases of infections in Australia is 7.150 (6,580 already recovered) and total death is 103. Population of Australia is 25 million which about 1/5 of Japan.

[COVIT-19 Status Quo,

New conformed case as of April 1 was 302 and the number became 11 as of April 30, and all through May, the number has been as low as the same level. The population of New South Wales is about 7.3 million but its new cases as of April 1 was 150, but now it is less than 10 or so.

[Taking social distancing,

The orders here come with penalty in case of violation, not “voluntary restriction” like Japan. Social gathering whether indoor or outdoor more than two had been prohibited until May 15. Exception like wedding was up to 5 and in case of funeral was up to 10. There is no “Pachinko parlor” in Australia, but there are slot-machine in clubs. These clubs were closed until now.

The playgrounds for kids were closed and playground equipment was sealed by “red and white” tapes. In Japan, “red and white” is happy combination of the colors. We often see such curtains of tapes at festivals or temples ad shrines. But here it means “banned” or “prohibitions.” I thought it was interesting.

[Playground equipment was closed,

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Japan demanded that all elementary, junior high and high schools and special needs schools throughout the country be temporarily closed from March 2 until spring break to prevent the spread of the new corona-virus. Although there is no legal basis, the request was made based on the increase in the number of infected people.

But here in Australia, education is one of the most important social activities, and students (and parents) can choose to stay at home or come to their school. Our grand-kids and their parents chose to send their kids to school. I happened to see them when I was walking for my daily exercise one day.

[My son and his daughter at school gate,

“Easing the restrictions in NSW”

There are 7 states in Australia and Sydney is the capital of New South Wales (NSW). Restrictions and easing restrictions are different according to the situation of each state. We are supposed to follow the decisions by state government.

From May 1, 2 adults and their kids can visit other family’s home.

[Take social distancing,

After assessing National Cabinet's new framework, the NSW Government will ease COVID-19 restrictions from Friday 15 May to allow:

・ outdoor gatherings of up to 10 people

・ cafes and restaurants can seat 10 patrons at any one time

・ up to 5 visitors to a household at any one time

・ weddings up to 10 guests

・ indoor funerals up to 20 mourners, outdoor funerals up to 30

・ religious gatherings/places of worship up to 10 worshipers

・ use of outdoor equipment with caution

・ outdoor pools open with restrictions.

・ Restrictions around regional holidays and other activities will remain in place.

Current restrictions

For businesses that can open, each business owner can make decisions about what makes the most sense for their situation. Employers must allow employees to work from home where it is reasonably practical to do so.

You may not currently travel to regional NSW for holiday purposes. Travel and transport limitations remain in place until 1 June.

-----

When I read “outdoor gathering up to 10” I thought we could go to the Blue Mountains together from May 15, so I went to the Blue Mountains on May 15 and May 19 to check the available tacks.

I was wrong. “You may not currently travel to regional NSW for holiday purposes. Travel and transport limitations remain in place until 1 June.” So, I had to wait traveling to the Blue Mountains on June 1st or later.

“The Great North Walk Trekking”

Saturday Hikers Group planned “The Great North Walk Trekking” on May 22. In the summer of 2018, they visited Japan and I guided them to Mt. Fuji as well as Mt. Yarigatake. They usually go hiking on Saturday, so I call the group “Saturday Hikers Group.”

“The Great North Walk” connects Sydney and Newcastle. It’s the 250 km track along east coast of southern Australia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_North_Walk

We walked a portion of this walk between Berowra and Hornsby about 25 km.

Four Korean hikers joined this plan. They were born in 1955 and all good hikers.

Meeting place as Berowra station at 10:30. The trains run according to the time table, but there were a few passengers. They try to limit the passengers up to 20% of all seats. Available seats are marked and they are only two seats out of ten.

[You sit on the marked seat,

The total distance of the track is over 25 km. and we started at 10:30 am. We need to arrive at the destination before 5 pm, otherwise it would be too dark.

[At the Berowra entrance of Great North Walk,

[We began to walk for 25 km, 25

We walked very fast with shortest possible break. Actually we took only 2 “take-five” during 6.5 hour trekking.

[We took a five on our way, 途中で5分休憩、도중 5 분 휴식]

We went down to the valley and waked up and down so much. Soon, I was out of break, and getting slower than others. Our leader Mr. Lee kept accompany with me.

[On the way to Hornsby,

He offered his help to take care of my bag. I first turned down his offer, but when we had the 2nd “take-five,” it was almost 3 pm. We still had about 8 km to walk and the track was steep. I finally rendered my bag to him and he carried my bag for the rest of trekking.

[On the way to Hornsby,

We arrived at the town of Hornsby before 5 am. We found a Vietnamese restaurant and enjoyed our dinner with 3 bottles of “Makkori”(Korean folk wine).

[At Vietnam Restaurant,

There are about 30 seats in the restaurant. Three guests were before us. We could order our meals, but late comers of 4 people could not get their seats because of “up to 10 patrons” rule.

[A Vietnam cuisine, rice noodle,

We planned the next week trekking at another portion of “The Great North Walk.”

Travel over 50 km within the state of SNW will be allowed from June 1.

[COVIT-19 Status Quo,

[Daily changes of confirmed cases,

[Playground equipment was closed,

SR (Sydney Report)# 22

“A Bolt Out Of The Blue,” “The Move” and “New Life Under COVIT-19 Crisis in Sydney.”

“A Bolt Out Of The Blue”

The number of confirmed cases in Australia was rising day by day, and the government began to say; Avoid 3 Cs (“Confined spaces,” “Crowded places,” and “Close contact with people,”) in the middle of March, I walked 7 km from our share-house in Victoria avenue to the house of Mike Gartner, the leader of Bible Study Group in Burns Bay, I arrived a bit earlier than 10 a.m. when the study started. When I checked e-mails with my smart phone, I got “a bolt out of the blue” mail. It says as follows.

[At Wednesday Bible Study Meeting,

“Termination of share accommodation agreement at 113 Victoria avenue Chatswood"

“Dear Taiji and Kikuko, as per our conversation, the owner of the property will not be continuing my lease and so I will have to move out. I am writing to give you 21 day notice to vacant the above premises by 7th April, 2020.”

[The old share-house on Victoria Ave.,

We had been living in the share-house since January 2019. Since our neighbors in Room 5 moved out in December, we moved in Room 5, because it was a little more spacious and convenient, and we were happy about it.

Then only less than 3 months, all of the sudden, we got this announcement. You can imagine how big shock we got. But our agent wrote at the same note: I have alternative accommodation for you at 34 Albert Ave Chatswood. Please let me know if this is of interest to you.

So, we asked the agent to inspect the new share-house in 34 Albert ave that afternoon. It locates much closer to the station, and it has 7 rooms. The agent says that Room One is available and the rent is the same as the current one. Both my wife and I liked the new share-house, besides, we have not much other choices.

[The new share-house on Albert Ave.,

It was really “A bolt out of the blue” but a phrase from the Bible also came into my mind.

1 Corinthians 10:13 New International Version (NIV)

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

“The Move”

My wife and I liked the old share-house at 113 Victoria Ave., Chatswood. We could enjoy spacious common space. I like the big common desk which I used every day. It was set at the big window from which I could see the spacious garden and a set of table and chairs under the roof of attached facility.

Our neighbors; Ari and Kenny are Spanish young couple. Kenny has a brother who often visits them and three of them used to have parties outdoors.

[Little party with our neighbors at the old share-house,

Kenny and his brother own motorcycles and they often manipulate their machines together. (When they complete their job, they tried to start the engines, and that sound sometimes bothered us, though.)

[Little party with our neighbors at the old share-house,

Ari and Kenny were also asked to leave their room. One evening we had a little party with a bottle of wine and some pickled cucumbers.

They may move to another share-house which the agent suggested. Anyhow our lives are full of “hello” and “good-bye.”

The agent gave us the room keys of the new share-house. I began to carry my things from old house to new house, little by little after the day of inspection.

D-Day was April 1st. My son together with his 2nd daughter, Anna, came to our old share-house by his car. Helped us by using car and tripped three times and our move was completed.

By the end of March, Australian cabinet put on the strict rules to prevent the spread of COVIT-9 viruses. No more than 2 people are not allowed indoor or outdoor, but activities related “move” are exception. When we move from old house to new house, I suddenly feel nostalgic about the old neighborhood.

There is a small park along Victoria Ave. and when I passed the park, I saw a lady (probably Chinese) practicing Taichi along with a fan in her hand.

[A lady practising Taichi in a park,

Our move was completed by noon on April 1, 2020

“Life in Sydney Under Mild-Lockdown in April”

Australia is one of the first countries which refused the entry of foreigners who came from mainland China after Chinese government locked-down Muhan city at the end of January.

Yet, the number of people who were confirmed as COVIT-19 infection had been increased rapidly until its peek of 460 nationwide as of March 28.

[New confirmed cases, daily count,

The Cabinet imposed the strict measurements one after another like followings:

The following facilities were restricted from opening from midday local time 23 March 2020:

• pubs, registered and licensed clubs (excluding bottle shops attached to these venues), hotels (excluding accommodation)

• gyms and indoor sporting venues

• cinemas, entertainment venues, casinos and night clubs

• restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeaway and/or home delivery

From 12:00am on 26 March, these restrictions were extended to the following:

• food courts (except for take away)

• auction houses, real estate auctions and open houses

• personal services (beauty, nail, tanning, waxing and tattoo salons)

• spa and massage parlours, excluding health related services such as physiotherapy

• amusement parks, arcades and play centres (indoor and outdoor)

And all churches are closed, and any social gathering indoor or outdoor, more than 2 people are banned on March 29.

Therefore, Sunday church services, as well as Wednesday Bible Study Meetings are conducted by utilizing internet service called “Zoom” this month.

I found this “Zoom” quite useful as my wife and I joined a local choir practice together. Moreover, this “Zoom” makes me possible to join even international study group, as I rejoined my old English study group in Japan.

It seems that the government’s strict measurement imposing successful. On April 16, Australian Cabinet issued Media Statement and it says;

“National Cabinet noted new modelling that has confirmed that measures put in place to suppress the virus have largely been successful in slowing and reversing the growth of cases in Australia to ensure our health system has the capability to manage the epidemic.

It is estimated that overall, Australia is currently detecting approximately 92 per cent of all symoptomatic cases, with each state and territory individually detecting at least 80 per cent. Australia’s point estimate when compared with other countries is 84 per cent, the highest reported detection rate globally.

Modelling shows the current effective reproduction number, Reff for Australia and state and territories. For COVID-19 suppression strategies to be effective, Reff (the number of people a single case infects on average) needs to be less than 1.0. Currently, the results look very encouraging.”

And it says the Cabinet agreed to extend 4 more weeks!

There are many points became clear about COVIT-19; Aged people and those who have poor immunity due to having chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressures, asthma, tend to have serious problem and easy to develop [Muhan] pneumonia.

So, first of all, I will avoid the contagion of the novel corona virus by keeping high level hygiene, while keeping or strengthen my immune system and having peace in mind.

a) Adequate exercise: I used to walk in the Blue Mountains, but it is difficult for a while. Instead, I walk nearby trekking courses. Fortunately, there are several attractive trekking courses so I walk regularly almost every day. My daily target is to walk more than 10 km a day.

b) Adequate nutrition: Now my wife joined my diet, brown rice porridge for breakfast, and lunch. Thanks to the self-isolation regulation, now we eat breakfast and lunch together every day. I am happy to cook miso-soup or “wakame” soup plus “ham & egg” for the breakfast, and for lunch my wife may cook carry and rice, or I cook hamburger or whatever available. I am happy to have more occasions to have meals together.

c) Peace in mind: We are aware that we shall die whether we survive this new corona crises or not. Now both of us believe the existence of the Creator of the world. A few years ago, my wife happened to listen to the messages of “Youtube messenger of Gospel” Mr. Goichiro Takahara. This year, we access a website, “The Bible and the Gospel”. https://biblegospel.org/ by smartphone and listen to the “backnumbers” of the messages from #1 to #1048. I am very happy that we both believe in Jesus Christ as our savior. Due to prevent the novel corona virus pandemic, all churches have been closed in Australia, but we can attend Sunday service by using Internet service “Zoom.” We join a local church service together with our son’s family and see each other through Internet. This is something good thing that this crisis brought to me.

The COVIT-19 pandemic has completely changed the world. We are not sure when this crisis will be over. May God lead us to the better world, I just pray.

Who ever predict that almost the whole international flights are cancelled? Who ever imagine the crude oil price in the future become minus? Who ever thought that Tokyo Olympic 2020 be postponed or even in the danger of cancellation?

We never know the world of tomorrow. Yet, I’d like to listen to the voice of infinitive. I’d like to enjoy the pleasures that God allows me to enjoy whatever the situation is.

Now I see silver lining under the cloud of COVIT-19 crisis. We have cleaner air than before. Maybe less CO2 because less flights and transportation movement. More importantly, we have closer relationship with our spouses.

[At Wednesday Bible Study Meeting,

[The old share-house on Victoria Ave.,

[The new share-house on Albert Ave.,

[Little party with our neighbors at the old share-house,

[Daily change in total confirmed cases,
