Hiking Date: Sep. 15 (Sat) 2012
Destination (mountain): YongBongSan (381m), Hongseong/Yesan, ChungNam
Hiking course: YongBong Elementary School – Mirok Rock – Ridge – Mt. YongBongSan – 369Bong – Maeseokbul (Buddha Statute) – YongBongSa Temple – Screen Rock – Parking Lot of YongBongSan Entrance
Participants: About 20 AhToSan members
Originally, AhToSan had planned overnight trip to Tsushima in Japan. But because of Typhoon 16, the trip was postponed. In stead, they planned “Bong-Gae (Iregular) hike to Mr. YongBongSan in Hongseong/Yesan, ChungNam Province.
Meeting Place and time: World Cup Studium South Gate, at 10 am. I took a taxi from Shinseongdong, but I could go by bicycle. It must be less than half-an-hour by bike.
[We got together at the convenient store in front of World-Cup Stadium,
AhToSan staff members including the chairman and Jeongjeong, Minju, etc. and 17 members including myself, got together at 10 am. (Later, some more came directly to the place.)
When we have “Bong-Gae” hike, we do not charter a bus, but we use our own cars. So, we headed for the destination with 4 cars. I joined Alain Delon’car and we arrived at the starting poin of the hike at 11 am.

Staring point was the parking lot in front of YongBong Elementary School. We walked on a paved road up to the temple (MiRokAm) where an unique statute of MiReukBoSal(미륵보살) or “Maitreya.”
[The main] Hall of MiRokAm,
[The statute of MiReukBoSal,
According to the explanation, it was made during Goryo Period (918 – 1392). So it is almost 1000 years old.
The entrance of the trail was behind the statute. After walking a steep rocky trail for about 30 minutes, we came to a ridge from where we had good command of Hongseong areas. I was the last hiker, and AhToSan members were waiting for me. We enjoyed “Makgeolli” and I offered grapes and small tomatoes for them.

I enjoyed ridge walking since I could see many interestingly formed rocks. We arrived at the top of YongBongSan at around 12:30.
[At the top of Mt. YongBongSan,
The number of hikers I ate lunch together was 11. I brought “Joppal” or “pigs trotters” that many Koreans favorit sidedishes for Makgeolli for my fellow hikers.

After having lunch, we began “afternoon hike.”The trails were well facilitated and many hikers could enjoy seeing strangely formed rocks, such as “Mulkae Bawi” or “Seal Rock” etc.
[The Seal Rock, 『
[A view from the Seal Rock,
Then we began decending the ridge. After passing several gazebos and benches, we came to the open place where another statute of Buddha called “Maeseokbul마애석불” in Korean. There was a big stone alter and we took a picture there.
[Buddha Carved on Rock Surface,
After passing this Stone Budda, we soon came to a temple called “YongBongSa.” There were only a few buildings now, but it used to be a big temple with thousands of monks during Goryo Period.

I thought it was almost end of the hike. I was wong. The leader of the hike began climbing the other side of the temple. It was only 800 meters from the temple to the obvervatory, but I felt a bit hard. But it was worth climbing the additionl trail. We had another good view from the observatory place called “ByongPungBawi” or “Screen Rock.”

[Walking down on the ridge,
We began decending again walking along the ridge. We walked down to the parking lot which was different from one we parked in the morning. It was much larger parking place, and a couple of kilometers apart from our cars.

Someone parked his car at this parking lot. And he drove back to the original parking place with “Alain Delon”who came to pick us up and drove to the original place.
It was 3 pm when all hikers gathered. Then half of us ended the trip and returned to Daejeon, and the rest of us, went to “KanWalDo (Seosan, ChungNam)”to eat “Jeono전어” or “gizzard shad.”
They said it was the best season to eat “Jeono.” “Jeono” is called “Konoshiro” in Japanese. It’s used for “shushi” in Japan.

Korean people grilled these fish and eat them from head to tail. They tasted very good.

After having a kind of “Wrap-up” party with “Jeono” we did sight-seeing at the fishermen market.
I bought dried fish which looked like “Yanagi Karei” in Japanese with 20,000 won and “Eorigul-jot” or “oyster pickled with sault” with 15,000 won. They are good with steamed rice.

We came back to Daejeon at 6:30 pm. It was really a nice hike and sight-seeing. Thanks to AhToSan indeed.

It was my 47th hike for this year.

[We got together at the convenient store in front of World-Cup Stadium,

[The main] Hall of MiRokAm,
[The statute of MiReukBoSal,
["Makgeolli break" on the ridge,
[At the top of Mt. YongBongSan,

[After lunch at NoJeokBong,
[Alain Delon sitting on the Seal Rock,
[In front of Buddha Carved on Rock Surface, 「
[A mineral spring at YongBongSa Temple,
[At the observatory of "Screen Rock",
[Wrap-up Party at GanWolDo,
{A dish of seasoned gizzard shad, 『
[Shopping at the fish market,

I like hiking very much. I used to go hiking with a Korean hiking club named “AhToSan.” This blog introduces mostly my hiking activities in Korea and Japan, and Sydney in Australia. As of January 2020, I live in Sydney suburb. I go Blue Mountains and bush walk in Sydney area.
