Hiking Date: Dec. 15, 2012 (Sat) Cloudy, foggy,
Destination (mountain): MinJuJiSan (岷周之山민주지산1242m), Yongdong(永同영동), ChungBuk Province(忠北충북)
Hiking course: Hwangyongsa Temple – Junction of three trails – MinJuJiSan (1242m) – SeokGiBong (1200m) – SamDoBong (1176m) – Junction – Temple (about 12 km, 8 hours)
Partner: 8 AhToSan members.
AhToSan originally planned to go to Sweppul Rock Mountain (445m) in BuAn, JeonBuk Province. But because of the bad weather, there were less than 20 applicants.
So the stuff members of AhToSan decided not to use a bus, but to go by ourselves, and at the same time, they changed the destination to MinJuJiSan (1242m), much higher and difficult mountain.
I climbed this mountain in Feb. 10, 2005 so this is my 2nd time. I remember that it was a terribly cold hike in 2005. This time, it was much warmer, maybe 0-2℃.
Gathering time and place were unchanged; 7 am at Expo South Gate. I took a bus from Shinseongdong (#606) and arrived at 6:20.
There were only 9 participants including myself. Most of them came by car and “Pianoman” and “Haneulsaem”drove their cars.
Pianoman’s car has room for 9 people. Haneulsaem’s car has 4 people capacity. So we had plenty of space.
Haneulsaem is a new member. He joined us last week for his first time. So, it was his 2nd time. Yet he seems an experienced hiker. He knew many mountains, just like other AhToSan members, esp. Alain Delon, the former president of AhToSan.
Ruchi and I joined Haneulsaem, so did Alain Delon. Alain sat next to Haneulsaem, and they enjoyed talking about mountains.
We ran on the highway for about one hour, then went to a village, called “NoCheonRi.”Alain bought 4 bags of ramen and soju and makgeolli at a small supermarket for the consumption at the mountain.

[A 600-year-old tree in front of the shop,
We arrived at HwangRyongSa Temple at 8:35. After putting our hiking gears (spats and climbing irons) we took a group picture and began hiking.
[We arrived at the temple at 8:35 am,
[We put climbing irons and spats on our feet,
[The group picture before the hike,
There was a nice suspension bridge behind the temple. The bridge was over a nice river with much water.
[The nice suspension bridge behind the temple,
We walked along the river on the gentle slope, but soon I was behind everyone.
[We walked along the beautiful river,
7 members were waiting for me at the junction of three trails, but Heras, the youngest guy, did not wait and went ahead alone. We never saw him until the hiking was over.
[The 7 members were waiting for me at the junction, 7
Nowadays I am always the last hiker, because my pace is slow. So 7 members had to wait for me for almost every one hour.
At the first break, at around 10 am, we had “Suzuki Time.” They had makgeolli and I offered fruits such as strawberries and mini-tomatoes.
["Suzuki-Time" at the first short-break,
[Boxes of strawberries and mini-tomatoes at "Suzuki Time", イチゴとミニトマトのボックス、"스즈키 타임"의 딸기와 방울 토마토]
The trail was over the stream several times. We had to step on stepping stones every time.
[I had to cross the stream several times,
After crossing the stream 3 or 4 times, the trail was away from the stream, and slopes became very steep.
The trails became vague and vague, and then there were no trail, but we had to walk in the bush.
This remined me of Mt. Sobo-san in Kyushu, Japan. Mr. Matsumoto and I had a terrible time to walk in the bush of bamboos.
This time, too. We had to step on bamboos, and had hard time to come out on the ridge.
We came to the ridge, but yet there were no trail We had to climb on rocks and it was hard for me.
When we came to the main ridge, then I found a normal trail. But when I came to the normal trail I was about to go to the wrong direction.
It was really fourtunate for me that there was a stranger on the ridge and stopped me, saying it was the wrong direction.
I followed his advice and went to the opposite direction. Then Jeongdaun, the president of AhToSan was kindly enough to be waiting for me.
[Jeongdaun, the president, kindly waited for me, 稜線の雪の中に立つチョンダウン会長、정다운 회장님이 능선에 쌓인 눈 속에 서있다.]
[AhToSan members were waiting for me, アトサン会員たちが私を待っていてくれた。
Soon we found a shelter in the foggy mountain. There, the 7 AhToSan members were preparing lunch in the shelter.
[We found the shelter (un-peopled lodge) in the fog,
It was 11:30 and we had lunch there. Haneulsaem brought a set of burner and he cooked ramen.
[We had lunch in the shelter,
He also brought a bottle of home-made wine. He offered a cup of the wine to me first, because I was the most senior man among hikers.
[I got a bamboo-cupful of home-made wine,
8 of us had lunch at the shelter. I brought my own lunchbox and hot water in a thermos. I poured the hot water onto the rice with “umeboshi.”
"Haneulsaem" cooked ramen by his gas-burner and everyone ate it with their own lunch food, but for me, my own bento was big enough. "Haneulsaem" also brought a bottle of home-made wine. He gave the first cup of his wine for me to show respect of my age. It tasted very good. I like his bamboo cup, too.
Pianoman did not eat much, and he started first. We never saw him again until at the end of the hike.
[Ridge walk in the heavy snow in fog,
[A moment we could see a blue sky,
7 of us went together and arrived at the top of MinJuJiSan together. We had nice group pictures taken by other hiker from Busan.

The top of MinJuJiSan was a bit rocky and we had to go down by using a rope.
[We went down from the top of MinJuJiSan,
Then we went on the ridge hiking. There was plenty of snow on the ridge, so it was hard to walk.
I tended to be slow and always the last hiker. But 6 hikers were kindly and patiently waiting for me.

[They were waiting for me in front of the statute,
When we arrived at SeokGiBong, it was around 2 pm. There was a big statue of Buddah on the stone near the top of SeokGiBong.

[Jeongdaun near the top of SeokGiBong,
Then we had a short break again at the gazebo near the top of the mountain. J-nim offered a bottle of makgeolli and side dishes.
[We had a short break at the gazebo,
Jeongdaun and Hangeryong left the gazebo first, and I never saw them again until the end of the hiking. They went first to follow the other two (Haris and Pianoman).
5 of us walked together, but I was always the last hiker.
It was 3:20 when we finally arrived the 3rd peak, “SamDoBong (1172m).”.”Sam-Do” means three province. The top of SamDoBong is located at the point of three province: JeonRaDo, ChungChongDo and GyongSangDo.
It was the border of Silla and Baejae about 1000 years ago. So, the two countries often forght each other then.
5 of us took several pictures at the unique stone statute of SamDoBong. The we began descending the mountain.
[Finally, I arrived at the last peak, SamDoBong,
Ruchi and J-nim, went down first, and I never saw them again until the end of the hiking.
Now I saw only Hanulsem and Alain. Soon Hanulsem went ahead, and I never saw him again until the end of the hike.
[Hanulsem and Alain in the fog,
Alain was the only hiker who kept accompany of me until the very end of the hike, it was 5 pm.
[On our way down from SamDobong,
[Finally, I could see the temple,
We soon left the temle and headed for Daejeon. We had a wrap-up party at a famous restaurant near city hall, “DaeSeon Kal-Kuksu.”
[The entrance of "DaeSeon Kal-Kuksu" 『
We had the party from 7 to 8 pm, and I went back to Shinseongdong using a subway and a bus. I came home at 9 pm.

[We used two cars to go to MinJuJiSan,
[Shopping at a small shop at a village,
[The group picture before the hike,
["Suzuki-Time" at the first short-break,
[At last, I could come out to the real trail,
[We had lunch in the shelter,
[I got a bamboo-cupful of home-made wine,
`[AhToSan members at the top of MinJuJiSan, AhToSan members at the top of MinJuJiSan (1242m),
[We went down from the top of MinJuJiSan,

[Ruchi, near the top of SeokGiBong,
[We had a short break at the gazebo,
[At the top of SamDoBong (1176m Very cold!),

[Finally, I could see the temple,
[At "DaeSeon Kal-Kuksu" restaurant, 『

[At the exit after the party,
