Course: Ofuna – Tokyo – Nagano – Kambayashi Onsen Iriguchi(The entrance of Kambayashi Spa)
Partner: None
I took advantage of my age 65. I became a member of “Otonano Kyujitsu (大人の休日)Club” which sells special JR Pass during none-peak sightseeing season.
I bought “Hokuriku-Tohoku Free Pass(北陸・東北フリーパス)” by 15,000 yen. This gives me the right to take any JR trains as far as Hokuriku-Tohoku area for 4 days.
Any trains include Shinkansen (Tohoku, Yamagata, Joetsu, Akita Shinkansen, so it’s a big discount.
The first destination of my journey was Jigokudani, Monkey Park, since I missed the intriguing scene of wild monkeys taking spa last time (Dec. 31 – Jan. 1 trip with my wife and Tracey.)
After attending Day KEC meeting on Jan. 17, I began alone-trip by taking “Odoriko-go踊り子号,” the special-limited train, to Tokyo.
I changed trains at Tokyo to Nagano-Shinkansen, and arrived at Nagano at 14:09.
I took the direct bus from East Exit of Nagano Statin at 14:40 and arrived at Kambayashi Onsen Iriguchi Bus-stop at 15:20, just the same schedule as I did before (with my wife and Tracey.)

What it differed was from this point to Jigokudani (the valley of hell). This time, I hurried to the monkey park, and I arrived at 16:00. I assumed that I arrived at least 20 minutes earlier than before.

But when I put my luggage at the inn and hurried to the Monkey Park, I saw many monkeys coming toward the direction of the inn, leaving the Monkey Park!

Oh, what a disappointing day, the monkeys took the spa much earlier than before, and they finished bathing and on their way back to the mountains!

When I entered the Monkey Park, there were only a few monkeys out of the spa on the snow, picking up some left-over food on the snow.

There were fewer guests at the inn that night. The room they allocated for me was a smaller room, next to the largest room which we stayed last time.

When I took the open-air hot-spring at the inn, there were two foreigners in the both-tub. They were British gentlemen from London.
I talked with a Japanese guest who stayed at the next room of mine. He said while taking the open-air spa, a monkey jumped into the same spa, and made number-one at the edge of the spa.
He picked it and put it way before the British gentlemen came into the both.
After having the dinner, I went to the open spa again. It was snowing hard, just like the blizzard. I thought the valley was really appropriated to be named “Jigokudani” or “The Valley of Hell.”

[The small guest room I used this time, 今回使った一人用の和室、이번에 사용한 일본식 객실]
[The open-air spa for people, 人間専用の露天風呂、인간 전용 노천탕]
