I got up at 5 am and took the open-air spa beside the valley. It was snowing heavily.
“Wow, can I go to the bus-stop in this heavy snow?” I thought. But fortunately it became lull while I was having breakfast.
What I failed was to stop my alerm clock which I set at 6 am. When I returned to my room, the alarm bell was ringing from my room! What a nuisance I made to the traveler sleeping next to my room!
I settled my payment: 12,705 yen for one night with two meals, plus a bottle of beer for dinner (800 yen) and tax for spa (150yen) total 13,555 yen with my credit card.

After breakfast, I checked out at 7:50 and hurried to the bus-stop. The road between the inn and the bus-stop were snow-covered, but I managed to arrive at the bus-stop at 8:45.
The bus came on time (8:55) and arrived at Nagano Station on time (9:35).

I took an ordinary train of Shinetsu Honsen from Nagano to Naoetsu.
I bought an “ekiben駅弁” named “Masu-zushi Bento鱒寿司弁当” or “Trout Sushi Lunch” by 1100 yen.

When I opened the wrapping, I saw white rice on the top and sliced trout under the rice. I ate as it was and it was tasty, but after having it all, I found that I should turn it upside down and cut it with the bamboo leaves. Oh, I should have read it before having it!
I changed trains at Naoetsu to the limited express called “Hakutaka #8.”

Because of the heavy snow, “Hakutaka” came 25 minutes late to Naoetsu. It was rather unusual for JR company.
Anyhow, I took Hakutaka #8 and headed for Takaoka. The weather turned to be a little better, and I could see sun-shine between the clouds.
I saw the dark color of the sea (Sea of Japan) and clouds on the right side, while I saw snow covered white moutains on the left side.
I really like to see such contrast and good scenes through the windows of the train.
Mr. S, one of my old classmates at the intra-NTT college was waiting for me at the ticket gate of Takaoka Station.

When I saw him last time was about 36 years ago when we graduated from the college, but I could clearly recognized him. It seemed that he also recognaized me immediately.
He took me to his home about 20 minutes away from the station.

His house is quite large with nice Japanese style garden, covered with snow.

Recently I found that he had the same hobby of mine, climbing mountain, when he sent me a New Year Greeting card with his picture on a high mountain.
As we sat in the living room, we began talking about mountain climbing in Japan and in Korea.
As long as Japanese moutains concerned, he had more experiences than me. He recommended the mountains which I had never climbed before such as Mt. Jonen, Mt. Arashima, Mt. Takazuma, Mt. Amagasa, etc.
Since I had another appointment in Fukui, I had only two hours with him, but the time flied like an arrow.
When it became the time to leave, he introduced his pet dog named “Nene” to me.

Nene was a shay girl (female dog) and hesitated to come close to me.
Later, he sent a picture of another pet, called “Hideyoshi.” Hideyoshi is an extraordinary big cat. [Hideyoshi and Nene are the names of historical figures in 16th century.]

It was a bit late, but he sent me to Takaoka Station by his car.
It was my fault that I did not check the train I was to take, but when I arrived at the ticket gate, the train “Shirasagi #14” just gone!
The Shirasagi #14 was on time, but next limited express “Hokuriku #6” was 38 minutes delayed.
I had another appointment with another classmate, Ms. C of the same college.
I arrived at Fukui Station about 1 hour later than I promised to see her. When I called her celllar phone number, she was attending another meeting. So she took her time and came to see me at Fukui Station.
I saw her at JR Fukui Station and we went into a coffee shop in the station. We had talked over coffee for about one hour.

I made my adieu and took another limited express “Sunderbird” and went to Kanazawa, farely big city where I reserved a room at a hotel.
I arrived at Kanazawa Station at 8:20 and arrived at Dorming Inn, a business hotel with hotspring facility before 9 pm.

The hotel provided free ramen for any guests who visited the dinning room after 9 pm.

I enjoyed the ramen and the hot spa which was on the 14th floor. The spa facilities were clean and nice, but could not see the night view of the city, because it was surrounded by wall. What a shame.
Otherwise, I could use Internet for fee, and everything else was OK. It was my 2nd day of my trip to Hokuriku-Tohoku Trip. (It cost less than half of the previous stay.)

地獄谷の朝は吹雪だったが、朝食を終え８時前に後楽館を出ると上林温泉入口までの2kmは小康状態だった。
しかし長野から直江津までも吹雪で車窓からみる風景は真っ白だ。
旅館では5時に起床して朝風呂へ行った。内湯は水の出がちょろちょろで温度は何と50℃！すぐにめいっぱい蛇口を開いて、内風呂はそのままにして露天風呂へ行った。すると夕べより激しい吹雪になっていた。
露天風呂の湯の温度はたぶん40℃ぐらいで適温だが、頭に雪が積もる。しばらくして内湯へもどったがまだ46℃くらい。もう一度露天に入り、うちうへ戻ると44度ぐらいでようやく体を湯にひたすことができたが、長湯はできない。
そうこうして部屋へ戻るとなんとアラームが鳴り続けていた。目覚まし時計のアラームを止めるのを忘れていた。なんと隣人に迷惑な事か。
早めに支度を済ませてフロントへ下りると、ちょうど食事の支度をしているところ。食事前に会計をカードで済ませた。1泊2食12705円、ビール800円、入浴税150円、合計13,655円だった。
朝食はきれいにいただいて、7時50分ごろチェックアウトした。昨夜降った新雪が深い。手提げかばんが重く感じる。

バス停には8:45到着。バスは時間通り8:55に来た。道路では除雪車がすごい勢いで除雪作業をしていた。吹雪は小康状態で、長野駅まで快適に走り、予定通り到着した。

長野からは鉄道の旅で、信越本線の鈍行で直江津まで。長野駅で鱒寿司弁当(1100円)を買って車内で食べた。
素直に蓋を外して笹の葉を開いてみると弁当がさかさまで、鱒が底でごはんが上。これはひっくり返して、笹の葉ごと切って食べるものと、食べ終わってから箱の説明を読んでわかった。腹に入れば同じだが、食べる前に確認すべきだった。

長野～直江津区間はふたたび吹雪が激しくなったが、2分遅れで直江津に到着した。到着したホームに新潟方面から特急はくたか8号が来るはずだった。
最初に聴いた駅構内アナウンスでは予定通りの到着と言ったが、すぐに途中のポイントに雪が挟まり、5分遅れるとのアナウンス。
ホームの待合室で待っていると、今度は強風のため速度を落として運転しているので20分遅れと訂正。

はくたか8号は最終的に25分遅れで直江津を出発した。
9両編成のはくたかの自由席は5，6，7号車で乗車率約40%程度の5号車に乗った。
乗車後、吹雪は収まり、雲間から太陽も顔をのぞかせ順調に走った。
車窓右側の日本海の上の雲は暗い。左側は真っ白い雪をいだく山々で旅行の醍醐味を味わえる。
高岡には25分遅れで到着したが、改札で私を待っていたSさんは昔の面影そのままですぐに分かった。
高岡駅の駐車場に止めてあった彼の車で彼のお屋敷へ連れて行ってもらった。

彼は大きなお屋敷に実母と二人で暮らしていると言う。奥さんや自分の家族は東京に住んでいて月に何回か東京へ通うそうだ。

自宅にの庭には、「ねね」というメスの犬を飼っているが、ねねは人見知りが激しく、主人が呼んでもなかなか彼女の小屋から出てこない。

立派な屋敷の庭に近い居間で「鳥瞰図で楽しむ日本百名山」成美堂1,900円という山の本を見せてもらって、山の話をした。
趣味の話をしていると時間の経つのが早い。彼のおすすめの山は、常念岳、荒島岳(深田久弥の原点)、高妻山、雨飾山など。

2時から4時まで2時間ほど話をしたわけだが、あらかじめ連絡しておいた16:23発「しらさぎ14号」に間に合うように高岡駅へ送ってもらった。
しかし、私は出発時間を確かめもせず、気楽にめずらしい風景の写真を撮りながら改札へ行くと、その時刻が4:23で、特急はまさに定刻に出た後だった。

次の金沢方面は16:16発の北陸6号が38分遅れで来たものに乗った。乗車前に高岡駅の公衆電話で富山で会う予定のCさんに電話をしたが、彼女は勤務中で電話に出ることができない。
やむを得ず、北陸6号で金沢へ向かったが、金沢では敦賀行きの鈍行が待機していて、福井まではこちらのほうが先に着くというので満員の鈍行に乗った。
途中で空いたものの鈍行で福井に着いたのは6時半。ちょうど1時間遅れで福井駅に着いた。
東口の公衆電話でCさんを呼ぶと新年会を中座して出て来てくれた。
駅構内の喫茶店でつもる話を1時間ほどした。彼女はNTT現役なわけだが2年後ぐらいに転職を考えているようで、この2年間は資格を取ることを目指すと言う。

日本語を外国人に教えることも選択肢の１つのようで、すでにその講習を受けたと言う。
韓国への旅行は興味があるようで、この2年間がチャンスだ。今後、メールでやり取りすることを約束した。
ちょうど1時間の話を終え、認証写真をとってから改札に向かうとちょうど遅れたサンダーバードがホームに入ってきてまったく待たずに乗車できた。
金沢駅には8時２０分ごろ到着した。ドーミーイン金沢は金沢駅東口から徒歩３分だが、看板が英語でDorming Innとなっていて気づかず、周辺を１周してしまった。

チェックインはスムーズで９時半からの夜食の醤油ラーメンはうまかった。

温泉は最上階の14階だが、せっかくの露天は外がみえずに天上のみ空間。外気を楽しむだけとはもったいない。
ホテルは典型的なビジネスホテルでネットも快適につかえてよかった。今回の北陸・東北旅行の第２日目であった。
