Travel Course: Kanazawa – Naoetsu – Echigoyuzawa – Omiya – Sendai

I got up at 5 am and took the spa on 14 F again. Then I had buffet style breakfast for nearly one hour.
After breakfast, I tried to visit Kanazawa Castle, but I went to the wrong direction. I went to JR Kanazawa Station.
There were many young people waiting for the bus to universities. It was the day of National Center Test for University Admissions.

There was a unique monument of kettle near the bus center. There was also a unique stone post on which an interesting doll at the station.

However, I noticed my mistake and returned to my hotel. After packing my things into my luggage, I tried to visit Kanazawa Castle again.
There was a big temple of Shinshu Otani denomination. Kanazawa Castle was built after Nobunaga destroyed Kaga-Buddhest Insurgence in 16th century. It seems that Buddhism tradition is still strong there.

There is a traditional market called “Oumicho Market” between the temple and the castle. I did window shopping at the market.

Then there was another Buddhest facility called “Otani Byosho” and the tumb of a monk called “Zonnyo.”

Passing the gate of this facility, I saw a hill covered with trees. It was a part of Kanazawa Castle.
Actually the main buildings of the castle were destroyed and the stonewallings have been preserved.
I tried to walk along the stonewalling course called “Nezumitamon Course” but it was closed only after about 10 meters from the entrance.

I returned from the castle park to the hotel but on my way back, I visited Ozaki Shrine which was built in the early 16th century.

It was a day of my travelling from Kanazawa to Senday, using Tokkyu (Limited Expres) and Joetsu and Tohoku Shinkansen.
First, I took the limited express “Hakutaka” from Kanazawa to Echigoyuzawa.
I bought “Ekiben” called “Tarameshi” or “Cod Lunch” at Naoetsu. It cost 1100 yen and very delicious.

The weather was cloudy, but when the train ran into “Hoku-hoku” Line, it began snowing heavily. I like seeing such while and black scenery through train windows.
“Hakutaka” arrived at Echigoyuzawa at 12:53. I changed train to Joetsu Shinkansen, “Max Toki.”
Max is a double decker and I took the first seat of the upper deck. After going through the tunnel, I came to the Pacific side of Japan.
The Pacific side was bright and clear, completely different from Japan Sea side.
I changed trains again at Omiya to Tohoku Shinkansen “Yamabiko”. Tohoku Shinkansen car is different from Max. It has a plug and bigger table for PC.

I could see Tohoku mountains through the window while making documents with my computer in the car.

I arrived at Sendai at 3:33 pm. I could see my hotel“Daiwaroynet Hotel Sendai” from “Yamabiko” near Sendai Station. It was just in front of the Station. But the exit of the station was opposite side of the hotel. Actually it took me nearly 10 minutes to come out to the right side.
I had another trouble when I tried to check in. The clerk at the hotel told me that my credit card was not acceptable.
I called the credit company and found out that my credit card was set to use up to 200,000 yen a month. Oh, my God, I spent too much already after returning to Japan.
I payed the charge 7300 yen by cash and checked-in. When the clerk guided me to the elevator, I just told her that I prefer higher floor, she kindly changed my room from 3rd floor to 11th floor. She even upgraded my room from a single room to a double room.

In spite of the credit card trouble, I felt very satisfied, and went out to the city.
The clerk said it would be only 15 minutes from the bus center to Sendai Castle. So, I went to the bus center.
Actually it took 30 minutes from the bus center in front of Sendai Station to Sendai Castle.
When I arrived at Sendai Castle, it was already dark and I could see the lights of Sendai from the hill.

I could see two TV towers lighted up on the hill. They looked nice, but not many things to see in the dark.

I went back from the castle to the hotel, only spending 10 minutes or so. It was my 3rd day of Hokuriku-Tohoku Trip.

５時前に起床。メールチェックをしてから温泉に入った。
朝食は６時半からビュッフェ方式。１時間かけて良く食べた。
はらごなしに金沢城址公園へ行こうとしたが、フロントの案内が悪いのか私の理解が悪いのか、ホテルからは反対の金沢駅方面に行ってしまった。
前日の雪が多く残る中、この日はセンター試験の当日で駅前には多くの受験生がバスを待っていた。

駅構内には石の郵便ポストがあり、その上には変わった金太郎のような人形があった。

また、駅前にはひしゃげたやかんのようなモニュメントが雪をかぶっていたが意味は不明。

途中で方向違いに気づいて引き返し、ホテルに戻って、チェックアウトの準備をしてから再度外出した。
再度ホテルを出て駅とは反対側に進むと大きな寺院があり、門には「真宗大谷派金沢別院」とあった。

真宗大谷派とは親鸞の浄土真宗の一派で、信長に滅ぼされた加賀一向一揆の拠点がその後金沢城になったことを思うと因縁がある寺院だ。
この寺を過ぎると大通りに面した近江町市場入り口があり、市場を見学した。日本海が近いせいか海産物が多く、函館の朝市を思い出した。

いろいろな海産物、特に有名な越前蟹が面白かったが安いものでも6000円。函館の時のように買い物はせず、今回はウィンドーショッピングに徹した。
近江町市場を抜けると左手に小高い丘が見え、その手前に存如上人御廟所及び大谷廟所という建物があった。

存如は、室町時代の浄土真宗の僧で、本願寺中興の祖・蓮如の父である。大谷本廟といえば京都にある宗祖親鸞の墓所だが、単に廟所とあるから浄土真宗関連の墓地であろうと推察する。
この施設を過ぎると金沢城址公園だろうと辺りをつけて近づいた。その通りだった。
しかし、最初に入った城壁コース(鼠多門コース)がすぐ行きどまりで見学する気をくじかれた。ここで城址見学はあきらめ、ホテルへ戻ることにした。

途中、甚右衛門坂 (じんえもんざか)の石標があり、金沢城址へ続いているようだったが、現在は通行止めとなっていた。
また、甚右衛門坂のすぐそばには江戸時代初期に設立された尾崎神社があった。ここの狐像は金網に覆われていたのはなぜだろう。

さて、仙台へ向かうための特急の時間帯を10時台、11時台、１２時台と考えたが、一番早い10:14発のはくたかに乗ることにした。
朝、ホテルと出るとき降っていた雪はやんで、良い天気になったがトレッキング・シューズが水漏れする。
はくたかの自由席は２両で金沢での乗車率は６0%位だったが、富山でほぼ100%になった。
富山から直江津まで日本海側を進むにつれ、天気は下り坂。空はどんより曇り、海の色も暗い。糸魚川で多くの乗客が降りてまた40%程度になった。
直江津から単線のほくほく線に入るとまたしても左右真っ白の世界で、雪は横殴りだ。また、杉の林に積もった雪が黒と白のコントラストをなして美しい。

越後湯沢には12時53分に到着。上越新幹線に乗り換え、大宮へ向かった。
上越新幹線はMax二階建ての二階席の先頭に座った。越後湯沢をでるとすぐにトンネルで、トンネルを抜けると太平洋側だ。
あたりまえだが日本海側とは異なり、快晴で実に明るい。
越後湯沢から大宮までは小一時間。大宮で東北新幹線に乗り換えも乗り換え時間が短く待つ時間が非常に少ない。
自由席は1号車から3号車まで、1号車が先頭と勘違いしたが、東京側という事は最後尾だ。この車両の一番前の席にはパソコン用の電源がある。また、テーブルも2倍大きい。パソコン作業には実に快適だ。

東北山脈をみながらのパソコン作業は快適だ。仙台には予定通り到着。
ホテルも東口駅前で、新幹線の車窓から見えたが、東口への出方が難しく、戸惑った。
プロントで「大人の休日倶楽部」のクレジットカードが使えず、少し押し問答をしたが、とりあえず現金で支払い、カード会社に電話をしてもらって確認すると1ヶ月の使用限度が20万円で、ほぼそれに達しているとのことで納得した。 予約した部屋が3階で、高い方がいいと言ったら、11階のダブルにアップグレードしてくれたのはありがたかった。

仙台城(青葉城)はホテルで聞くとバスで15分というので、行く気になったが4時45分のバスが出たばかりで、動物園循環に乗ったらなんと30分もかかった。
途中放送局のアンテナがライトアップされて幻想的だった。仙台城址南で下車したが、人もまばらな夜の城址公園だった。

すっかり夜の帳の下りた仙台を丘の上から眺め、早々に次のバスを待って、ホテルへ戻った。
ダイワロイネットホテル仙台はドーミーイン金沢にくらべ温泉と夜食・朝食がつかない分、安くてもよいと思うが、現実はその逆で、シングル7300円。しかし見晴らしの良い11回のダブルにアップグレードしてくれたのはありがたい。部屋は広くて快適だった。
北陸・東北旅行の3日目である。
