DR 195 “Summing up of my winter vacation in 2013.”
I began living in Korea in May, 2003. I have been living in Korea for a decade. So far, I could manage to live healthy. I thank for this for Korean society and I feel special grace from God.
For the first 3 years, I could work for ETRI, and I really appreciate for Dr. Jeong Seongyong who invited me to the institute, and those who accepted me as their colleagues at ETRI.
After the contract with ETRI was over, I was led by the unseen hand, and I was given a new task at the educational institute named Daedeok University.
Since 2006, every winter, I could spend a month in Japan. This winter, too, I could stay in Japan for a month.
Actually, winter vacation at a Korean university starts in the middle of December and lasts until the end of February. Therefore, I could stay longer in Japan. But since I have a studio apartment in Daejeon, it is better for me to come back to Korea after one month vacation in Japan.
This winter vacation was a bit different from those in the previous years. There are two reasons.
One is one of my friends’visit to Japan from Dec. 30 to Jan. 5. Tracey, my Australian friend in Korea wanted to see snow monkeys in Nagano. So, she and my wife and I went to Jigokudani, in Nagano, to see snow monkeys.

Then my wife and I took her to Tsuruoka, my wife’s hometown in Yamagata prefecture.
[At my wife's hometown, Tsuruoka, Yamagata,
I really enjoyed showing my guest around Japan for sightseeing.
The 2nd reason was my trip to Hokuriku-Tohoku regions by utilizing a special fee ticket under the name of “Otonano-kyujitu-club.”
[Mr. S of my Intra-NTT college classmate at his home in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture,
For the first time in my life, I enjoyed three different Shinkansens, and limited express trains as much as I like, and visited my old friends of Daigakubu (Intra-NTT college) in Takaoka and Fukui, my old missionary couples in Kamaishi, Miyagi prefecture and my relatives in Fukushima and Kitaibaraki city during the 5-night-6-day trip.
I came back to Korea after spending a month in Japan. Then I went to USA to visit my old and new friends in Oak Ridge (Tennessee), Rochester, Boston, Seattle and Vancouver (WA).
There are two big reasons to make this decision. One is to visit my good buddy in Korea, who retired from a Korean research institute at the age of 80 last year. I met Dr. Alan England in 2003, the first year I began to live in Korea, and soon we became good friends.
Alan introduced me to a cavers’ society in Korea, and I joined his caving adventures for 12 times.
He led a foreigners hiking group called Taejonhikers, and we went hiking many times.

At the farewell party for Alan in Korea, I promised to visit him in Tennessee to go hiking together.
Another reason is to visit my good old teachers of English Bible, and the ones who introduced me Jesus Christ as my saver in my 20s in Japan.
Mr. Donald Walter and his wife Eileen were the missionaries to Japan for more than 30 years. He recently wrote a book “The Unseen Hand”, an autobiography, and he sent a copy to me. They are now 92 and 91 years old.

I wanted to see them again and expressed my thankfulness to them for introducing Jesus to me.

Alan lives in Oak Ridge in Tennessee and Mr. & Mrs. Walter live in Vancouver WA. There are more friends I wanted to see. They live in Rochester, Boston and Seattle, so it took me nearly two weeks to visit them all.

My winter vacation will soon come to end. The new semester of 2013 starts soon.
Looking back my last winter vacation, I realize the fact again, the life is “traveling” and I am a traveler, and I live every moment under the grace of my God.

[At my wife's hometown, Tsuruoka, Yamagata,

[With Alan and his friend at Frozen Head State Park in Tennessee,
[With Mr. & Mrs. Rupp at Niagara Fall,
[With Pat-san (My English teacher at NTT College) in Boston,
[My friend in Seattle, Chris, and his mother's friends' home,
[With Mr. & Mrs. Walter at their home in Vancouver, WA,
[With Lois (the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Walter at Seattle Bay,

I like hiking very much. I used to go hiking with a Korean hiking club named “AhToSan.” This blog introduces mostly my hiking activities in Korea and Japan, and Sydney in Australia. As of January 2020, I live in Sydney suburb. I go Blue Mountains and bush walk in Sydney area.
