141115 Sightseeing Guide to Hakone(箱根観光案内)

Date: November 15 (Sat), 2014

Sightseeing Place: Hakome

Guest: Eric (Chinese Student in Japan)

Sightseeing Course: Odawara – Yumoto – Gora –Sounzan – Owakudani – Togendai – Hakonemachi – Sekisho-Ato – Hakone Shrine – Hakone-en – Komagatake – Yumoto – Ohiradai – Mimu-Ito (Hotel)

One of my good hiking friends known in Korea, Eric came to Japan to study at Ph. D course at Tokodai (東工大) in Japan.

This day, I guided him around Hakone and stay overnight at a hotel in Hakone with my wife and her friend. (My wife and her friend joined us at the hotel.)

I took Tokaido Line to Odawara and met Eric at the ticket gate of Tozan Railway in Odawara at 9 am.

I bought “Hakone Free Ticket” which enable the holder to use several transportation in Hakone for two days. (HFT cost 4000 yen.)

Eric and I took the train from Odawara to Yumoto then changed trains to Hakone Tozan Railway (climbing mountain train) to Gora.

They introduced new cars recently and the cars were good for viewing the nature in Hakone, but it was too crowed that day and we could not enjoy seeing the nice views of Hakone.

When we got off at Gora, then there was a long line of people for cable-car ride. We had to wait for 20 minutes to ride on the cable-car.

The cable-car brought us to Sounzan Station from which we took a rope-way over the active volcanic area to Owakudani Station. We smell sulfur and enjoyed grand scenery of the valley of Owakudani.

Soon after getting off the Owakudani Station, we hurried to the volcanic area where we could see smokes from the earth, and I bought “black eggs” which they boiled from the natural hot spring there.

We could see Mt. Fuji well, but not perfectly because the top of it was hidden by the cloud.

I bought 5 black eggs by 500 yen. Eric ate 3 and I ate two. I asked a stranger to press the shutter of my camera, while I took her picture by her camera. She was from Thailand.

We returned to Owakudani Ropeway Station and went to Togendai Station from which we took a big boat to Hakone-machi.

We walked from Hakone-machi to “Sekisho-Ato” where there was a fortress during Edo Period.

We had lunch at a bench on the hill of “Sekisho-Ato.” My wife made rice-balls for us in the morning. They were delicious.

After having lunch there we went to Hakone Shrine. There is another shrine called “Kuzuryu (九頭龍神社)” which means “Nine-Headed Dragon” Shrine. Eric’s Chinese name is “Julong(九龍)” which means “Nine Dragon.” This sounds like Eric’s Shrine, so it was quite interesting.

After visiting Hakone Shrine, we went to Hakone-en from which another rope way service available to the top of Komagatake (駒ヶ岳1327m).

It costs 1080 yen for a ride to the top of the mountain, but it is worth if the weather is good. It was a fine day. We enjoyed the nice views and we walked around the top of the mountain as well as the shrine (Hakone Main Shrine) on it.

I had an appointment to meet my wife/her friend at 5 p.m. at Ohiradai. We were late by 30 minutes.

Mariko, my wife’s good friend since they were 18 years old. I regard her as my good friend, too.

It was a small hotel with 5 or 6 guest rooms. The hotel was facilitated with a natural hot spring. We took the bath before dinner and it was good to have cold beer after taking bath.

After having gorgeous dinner, we enjoyed Karaoke in the hall. We were surprised by Eric’s singing a lot of songs of Japanese female singer. He is a big fan of Ayumi Hamasaki, so he knew many songs of Ayumi Hamasaki.

[At Owakudani Station,

[Owakudani Station,

[Riding Rope-Way again,

[At Hakone Sekisho-ato,

[At Hakone Sekisho-ato,

[At Hakone Sekisho-ato,

[Eric at Hakone Shrine,

[At Hakone Shrine,

[A gigantic Japanese cedar tree,

[Mt. Fuji from the top,

[Hakone Shrine on the top of Komagatake,
