“The Great North Walk: Epping to Chatswood”
Here in NSW, the government relaxed its restriction on June 1. Now we can travel 50 km or more within NSW. We can visit the Blue Mountains which is about 100 km west from the city.
Before going to the Blue Mountains, I walked a part of “The Great North Walk” which is located in my neighborhood. My Korean friends took me to this part after Berowra-Hornsby portion last month.
I tried to confirm this track from Chatswood to Epping on June 12. It was cloudy and began to rain when I lost my way after walking for 4 or 5 hours. It was because the guideposts were not clear.
I challenged the same rout again but different direction; from Epping to Chatswood on June 19. This was easier because I could remember the same way when my Korean friends took me last month.
Walking distance may be almost same; 20 km, but the time was different; it was 4.5 hours when I walked with my friends, but it took 6 hours when I walked alone.
You can enjoy bush walk; nature, vegetation, animals, but you cannot expect splendid sceneries like the Blue Mountains. It is just a rain forest.
“Wentworth Falls: Overcliff Track,”
NSW government relaxed the restriction due to COVIT-19 this month. We can travel 50 km or more within the state. The tracks in the Blue Mountains are also open.
So I called my Korean friends to go to the Blue Mountains on Saturday. They are mostly 60s, a bit younger then me. Those who came this month were not original members. They are rather new members.
Therefore, I propose the course, and if they agree, I guide them. On June 13, I guided them to “Overcliff Track” in Wentworth Falls, which had been under construction for a long time, and recently re-opened.
Wentworth Falls Station is the second stations before Katoomba. “Charles Darwin Walk” is now closed for the track work. So, we had to walk about 2 km from the station to “Conservation Hut Café” which is located at the entrance of the several tracks.
Visitors can see magnificent view of the Blue Mountains from the terrace. That day, we could see “sea of clouds” at lookouts and it is a rare occasion.
Climbing mountains in Japan and Korea means, approaching mountains and start walking at lowest point and walking up to the summit, then coming down. But here in Australia, at least at the Blue Mountains, we start walking at highest level, then walk down to the canyon, and then coming back to the high level.
Along the course, there are several “lookouts” from which you can enjoy good views. This time, there were 5 outlooks as below;
1) Queen Victoria Lookout
2) Lyrebird Lookout
3) Breakfast Lookout
4) Den Fenella Lookout
5) Jamison Lookout
I guided my Korean friends to these lookouts one after another. The sea of clouds were gradually evaporating, but we could enjoy every scenery with the clouds and we were all satisfied with beautiful scenes.
“Golden Anniversary
My wife and I got married in June, 1970. We were 22 years old. Since I entered Nippon Telephone and Telegraph Public Corporation (NTTPC) as a high school graduate, I wanted to enter the intra-NTTPC college very much and I was studying English very hard.
I was listening to an NHK educational program, “English Conversation” and the radio-lecturer, Dr. Toru Matsumoto and his stuff members organized “English Study Camp” at Hachioji College Seminar in March 1970. I joined the study camp and there I met a lady whom I married 3 months later.
Our first son, Hajime was born in 1971 and the second son, Ryo, in 1972. After 4 year failure, I passed the entrance examination of Intra-NTTPC college in 1975 and I experienced 2-year boarding college life in my late 20s.
I keep studying English since then. I added Korean language and now Chinese language to my life-long study.
Fortunately, I could experience the life in Korea from 2003 to 2014 and became to know many good Korean friends, as well as some international friends.
Our first son studied in a university in Sydney and got master and doctor degrees at UTS. He got a job and wife in Australia and now he has lived longer in Australia than in Japan. His wife is from Shanghai in China and now they have 4 kids (3 girls and one boy).
Thanks to their effort, my wife and I got “Parent Visa” and Permanent Residency in 2015.
Come to think of it, 50 years ago, when we got married, we were not sure what kind of family we get. 50 years later, my first son formed a big family of 6 in Sydney, Australia, our second son got a family of three in Tomioka-machi in Fukushima, Japan.
And we are living in Sydney, renewing “Parent Visa” and hoping to have “Golden year travel” in Japan.
Due to COVIT-19 restriction in Australia and Japan, it seems difficult to do soon after the anniversary date; June 28, 2020, but we can hope to carry out this plan in the near future.

「ザ・グレート・ノース・ウォーク：エッピング～チャッツウッド間のトレッキング」、「ウェントワース・フォールズのオーバークリフ・トラック」、「金婚式」
「ザ・グレート・ノース・ウォーク：エッピング～チャッツウッド間のトレッキング」
6月1日から、パンデミックによる規制が緩和されて、NSW州内の旅行が自由になった。これでシドニーから100km離れたブルーマウンテンへ行くことが可能になったが、その前に土曜日のハイカーと歩いた全長250kmの「ザ・グレート・ノース・ウォーク」の一部、「エッピング～チャッツウッド間」を復習すべく一人で挑んでみた。
5月30日に5人で歩いたときは、エッピングから出発してチャッツウッドを目指したが、6月12日は一人でチャッツウッドからエッピングに向かってみた。
しかし、トラックの途中の標識があいまいで、3回も道迷いをしてしまい、最後は雨も降りだして、やむなくバスに乗って帰った。
その1週間後の6月19日、今度はエッピングからチャッツウッドへ向かって歩いてみた。
この時はさすがに完走した時の記憶もあり、約20kmを迷わずに目的地に到着した。
所要時間は、5人で歩いたときは4時間半だったが、一人では6時間かかった。
また、熱帯雨林のブッシュウォークであり、すばらしい景観は望めない。こちらで期待できる素晴らしい景観は、ブルーマウンテンが手っ取り早い。
「ウェントワース・フォールズのオーバークリフ・トラック」
今月から州内旅行が解禁され、ブルーマウンテンの中のトレッキングも自由になった。
土曜のハイカーのグループメンバーは私より若い連中で、60代である。また、今月集まったのは比較的新しい会員で私が一番コースを知っている。
したがって私がコースを決めて案内した。6月13日はながらくコースを閉ざして最近工事が終わって開放された、ウェントワース・フォールズのオーバークリフ・トラックを案内した。
ウェントワース・フォールズ駅はカトゥンバ駅の２つ手前で、比較的駅に近い「チャールズ・ダーウィン・ウォーク」は現在補修工事中である。
チャールズ・ダーウィン・ウォーク入口を通過して平坦な街中の道を駅から約2km進むとコンサベイション・ハット・カフェに到着する。
このカフェのテラスからブルーマウンテンの景観が見えるが、この日は珍しく渓谷を雲海が埋め尽くしていた。
ブルーマウンテンの登山は、日本や韓国と違って、高い地点から渓谷を下る登山である。
したがって、開始時点から下り坂が続き、最後は上り坂を上って終わる。
そのコースの先々で見晴らしの良い展望台(ルックアウト)が存在する。この日次の5カ所の展望台をめぐった。
1) クイーン・ヴィクトリア・ルックアウト
2) ライヤーバード・ルックアウト
3) ブレックファースト・ルックアウト
4) デン・フェネラ・ルックアウト
5) ジャミソン・ルックアウト
以上の順に各ルックアウトを回ったが、時間の経過に従って雲海が次第に晴れてゆく過程を楽しめた。満足のゆくトレッキングであった。
「金婚式」
我々は1970年、ともに22歳の時に結婚した。私は高卒で電電公社に入社したため、公社内の教育機関「大学部」の受験に夢を持ち、英語の勉強に没頭していた。
当時、NHKのラジオ英語講師であった松本亨先生にあこがれていた私は、同年3月に松本亨英語高等専門学校が主催して八王子大学セミナーで行われた英語キャンプに参加して妻となる女性に出会い、同年6月28日に結婚した。
71年に長男、72年に次男が誕生。75年には5回目の挑戦で大学部に合格し、2年間の全寮制の学生生活を体験した。
英語の勉強は以来50年間継続している。いくら続けても生ぬるいやり方では上達はのぞむべくもないが、その後、並行して韓国語の学びを始め、2003年から2014年まで、韓国生活も体験した。
オーストラリアで高等教育を受け、就職・結婚して家庭を持った長男夫婦の働きで、我々夫婦は2015年にペアレント・ビザと永住権を得た。
50年前に結婚した時は、どのような家庭を作り、どのような家族になり、どこで暮らすのかも深く考えなかった。
そして長男はオーストラリアのシドニーで4人の子供を持ち、次男は日本の福島県で震災復興支援をライフワークに家族を形成中。
我々は金婚旅行を日本の国内旅行を想定していたが、これは思わぬコロナ禍で当分お預けとなりそうだ。しかし、近い将来の楽しみとしたい。
