Hiking Date: Aug. 11 (Sat) Cloudy

Destination (mountain): Gyonggido Hwangaksan 1468m,

Hiking course: The 38 Bridge – Bokodong Waterfall – Hwa-Ak-San (Jungbong) – The 38 Bridge (About 12 km/6 hours)

Partner: 32 AhToSan member including Zhu Jianshou, a Chinese scientist and two Korean Taejonhikers)

I went to the South Gate of Expo by 5:50 by taxi. They a lot of people coming from the outdoor exhibition hall. They watiched the football game between Korea and Japan at London Olympics.

The result of the game was the victory of Korean team, so everyone looked happy and satisfied.

We left the South Gate at 6 am, but the highway to Seoul was extremely jammed, therefore, we arrived at the foot of mountain at almost 1 pm.

We spent more than 6 hours on the bus, but I enjoyed reading a novel named “Zoku-Deiryu Chitai” or the “The mud flow area 2” written by Miura Ayako. So, there was no problem for me.

Dr. Zhu of Chinese sat by me, and he was studing Korean language by using drillbook, so he also utilized the time on the bus.

“Mariohyong” who gave me nice comments on my pictures about Japanese mountains uploaded to AhToSan site, sat behind us. He asked me to borrow my Japanese-Korean textbook. He also read my EBS textbook while we were on the bus.

Anyhow, we arrived at the 38 bridge (the name of the bridge may come from “The 38th parallel north” which separates North and South Korea since the location is very close to the DMZ.

Since we spent long time on the bus, we separated ourselves into two teams. Team A was to hike the original course, and Team B was to hike a bit shorter course as I wrote above. (Since I joined Team B, I wrote only B course.)

About a dozen of strong hikers joined Team A and the rest of hikers joined Team B.

We arrived at the 38 bridge at 12:53. After takeing a group picture of Team B, we began walking along the river.

After only about 10 mitues walk, we took a nice place for lunch in the woods. So we had lunch together and began to walk at 13:30.

[A white mushroom on the uphill trail,

We continuously walked along the river for about one hour. Then we came to a set of nice waterfalls.

[Korean chipmunk、

The waterfall is called “Bukodong (복호동)” Waterfall. Actually it was a double step waterfalls. Later, I found that some members went into the water. It must be cool.

After taking pictures of waterfalls, we climbed a bit steep slope along the very narrow trails. We call it “Kemonomichi” or “Animal path” in Japanese. We had to go through bushes in the mountain.

Later, I had a scar in my right leg. It became swollen for three weeks.

When we came to a forest road, some members were waiting for me. So, I offered grapes and mini-tomatoes and we had a short rest.

Then we continued to climb up to the top. I am not good at up-slope hike. After all, I was left behind the most of AhToSan people.

Jeongwon, a member of Taejonhiers, was also slow in pace. He was the only hiker behind me. But before reaching the top, he gave up and returned to the 38 bridge alone.

I arrived at the point of 600 meters away from the top at 4:30. A dozen of members were waiting for me. When I tried to go forward toward the top, one of AhToSan staff members advised me not to go to the top of HwaAkSan.

[Guidepost of 600m from the top, 『

The 600 meter point and the top of the mountain was “piston” course. So, if I gave up reaching the top, I could earn 1200m distance of hike.

[AhToSan members at the top of HwaAkSan,

I accepted his advice and began descending the mountain.

I still have staple knees, so I am good at descending. Actually, I was top among those who were taking rest at the 600 meter point.

[“Lychnis” or “Dongjakko동자꽃” in Korean, センノウ(仙翁)属、동자꽃(童子花)]

A man with the nickname of “Muyoksim” which means “No-greed” was just behind me. I talked with him when we came to a stream of river.

[A stream of river along the descending trail,

He said he was born in 1956 and he just retired from his work this spring. Now he enjoys retired life by learning the guitar, etc.

He said he was building a new house at a foot of a mountain. It will be completed this fall.

I thought that would be nice. I could retire from all my jobs and could live in the mountain in Japan!

Well, I still prefer to living in Korea like this. We arrived at the bus at the 38 bridge at 6:30 pm. I found out that I was one of the first hikers who arrived at the bus.

[I arrived at the bus at 6:30, 6時半にバスに到着、6시반에 버스에 도착]

The last hiker who came back to the bus, returned to the bus at 7:30. So, I could challenge to walk 1200 meters more and reach at the top of the mountain!

Anyway, I enjoyed the hike and especially wild flowers I saw during the hiking.

We had the wrap-up party under the bridge. The menue of the party was “Pig's trotters and makgeolli.”

We left the bridge to Daejeon at 8 pm. We came back to the South Gate of Expo at 11:30 p.m.

It was a long day, and it was my 42nd hike for this year and the 287th hike as the AhToSan regular hike for me.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Flowers of Albizia julibrissin (Persian silk tree, pink silk tree) on our way to Gyonggido,

[We arrived at the destination in the afternoon!

[In front of Bokodong Waterfall,

[A view of mountains at the observation deck,

[“Lychnis” or “Dongjakko동자꽃” in Korean, センノウ(仙翁)属、동자꽃(童子花)]

["Campanula medium" or "Tsuriganeso" in Japanese,

[At the guidepost of 600m from the top, 『

[A stream of river along the descending trail,

[Pig's trotters and "Makgeolli", 『
