140906 Guiding in Kamakura and Enoshima

Sightseeing Date: Sep. 6 (Sat) 2014, Fine

Sightseeing Place: Kamakura (Great Buddha, Hasedera, Enoshima Island)

Sightseeing Course: Hameda Airport → Tokyo → Ofuna (Lunch) → JR Kamakura (Hotel) → Kotokuin (Great Buddha) → Hasedera → Enoshima Island →Ofuna (Supper) → Kamakura (Hotel)

Guest: Bernardo (Originally from Mexico) [Mario (Originally from Germany) joined us at night]

Two of my good international friends came to Japan. Their main purpose was to climb Mt. Fuji. I welcomed them and guided around Kamakura first.

The first day, Bernardo arrived at Narita Airport before noon. I went to see him at the airport. Mario could not get an earlier flight ticket. He arrived at Narita rather late. So he came all the way from Narita to Kamakura late at night.

[At Narita Airport,

I took Bernardo to Ofuna, my hometown first. There we had lunch at a chain restaurant “Sukiya.” We had “Stamina set meal: “Gyudon with buds of garlic, salad, miso-soup” 380 yen for regular size and 480 yen for large serving.

["Stamina set",

Then we went to the hotel in Kamakura. The name of the hotel is “Hotel New Kamakura.” It was quite close from the West Exit of JR Kamakura Station (about 5 minutes on foot).

[Bernardo in front of the hotel.

There were two buildings: Main building and annex. It has rather spacious parking lot. They operate public parking lot business, too.

The room I reserved on Net was at the 1st floor of the annex. It was a small room, and the rate for single use was 8500 yen and double use was 17,000 yen.

I thought that single use was reasonable, but the double use was too expensive.

It was around 1 pm, but Bernardo could check in. I left my luggage and we went out for sightseeing without heavy load.

[In front of Enoden car, 『

The first destination was the Great Buddha at Kotoku-in. We took Enoden (Enoshima Electric Railway) from Kamakura to Hase and visited Kotokuin where the Great Buddha was.

Kotoku-in

There was not many things to see besides the Great Buddha at Kotoku-in.

We went into the body of the Buddha, but its inside was crowded and humid. We had a brief sightseeing there and hurried the next destination, Hase Temple.

Hasedera

[Lotus Pond at Hasedera,

[Platycodon grandiflorus or Japanese bellflower,

Hasedera is famous for its “Hasekannon,” a wooden statute of Kannon or “Guanyin.” But there are many things to see besides this statute, such as its beautiful garden, nice trail to see the seashore, the cave with many curved statutes, etc.

[A view from Hasedera,

I like the trails behind the hall in particular from which we could see the town of Kamakura and beaches and the sea.

[At Hasedera,

I also like the cave in which there are many sculptures and ema with international writing. We found some in Spanish language.

On our way to Hase Station from Hase Temple, we dropped in “Kamakura Orgel Doh(鎌倉オルゴール堂)” a music box shop having more than 1000 music boxes. I bought several musice boxes as gifts for my Korean friends.

There is also a small temple named “Shugenji” which requires no entrance fee. The small garden of the temple was also nice with many flowers.

We dropped in a hundred yen shop next to Hase Station and bought some drinks, then we took Enoden train again to Enoshima Station.

["Enoden" at Hase Station,

We could see the beach and Enoshima Island from the window, but we could not see Mt. Fuji.

[Inside of Enoden,

We got off at Enoshima Station of Enoshima Electric Railway, then we walked to Enoshima Island. Again, we could not see Mt. Fuji from the seashore because of misty weather.

It rained a little bit when we arrived at Enoshima, but not too much. We walked to the top of the Island and went into Enoshima Botanical Garden where there is a nice lighthouse.

[At Enoshima,

We could go up to the observatory deck, but because of foggy weather, we could not have much view that day.

[A view from the observatory,

After the sunset, we took a monorail and went back to Ofuna.

We went to a “Izakaya” or a drinking place named “Domon domon.” I never had supper or drinks there, but it was a nice drinking place.

The price of drinks and side dishes were reasonable, and there was an interesting service when we ordered “Highball.”

Bernardo asked what “Highball” is. “Highball” is a mixed drink of whisky and sodium carbonate.

[Highball Event,

When “guest” ordered “Highball,” then a waiter brought two dice to the guest. When the guest threw and the same number came out, the highball was free.

If the total number of the two dice was even, then the price of a cup of “highball” was 99 yen. If the number was odd, then it was 299 yen.

We enjoyed this game, too. We had drinks and many dishes and the total cost for two was about 4,000 yen.

After the party, we went back to the hotel in Kamakura and waited for Mario.

[Bernardo at Hotel New Kamakura,

I went to see him at Kamakura Station at 11:30 pm. Actually he arrived at the station before 11:30 pm. I took him to the hotel and I took the last train from Kamakura to Ofuna. It was 11:39 almost midnight.

[Finally Mario has arrived,

(Sightseeing Guide)

[Bernardo at Narita Airport,

["Stamina set",

[In front of the Great Buddha,

[In front of Hasedera,

[Lotus Pond at Hasedera,

[Lespedeza or bush clovers,

["Manji" Pond,

[A view from Hasedera,

[A view from Hasedera,

[At the observation deck,

["Ema" in Spanish,

[Bernardo in the cave,

[Carp in the pond,

[Inside of Enoden,

[In front of Enoshima ST.

[At Enoshima Bridge,

[At Enoshima,

[Ema at Enoshima Shrine,

[The light house of Enoshima,

[Bernardo at Hotel New Kamakura,
