100704 The 6th day of USA trip (Los Angels)

July 4th (Sun) The 6th day of the tour. Cloudy (in Las Vegas), fine (in Los Angels). We got up at 5 and left the hotel at 7 am to Las Vegas Airport.

I got a window seat again, and enjoyed the view from the sky for one hour. I could see the desert, some mountains and valleys and even snow covered mountains during the flight.

The guide in Los Angels, Mr. A, has been in the States for 30 years. The driver of our bus introduced himself as “Al-chan.” He is Afro-American guy who speaks a little Japanese. Therefore, he was poplular among Japanese sightseers.

First, we headed for Santa Monica where the terminal of Route 66.

[The terminal of Route 66 in Santa Monica,

It was located at the long beach where there were many people waiting for fireworks at night.

I noticed that there were thousands of crosses and flags on the beach. The guide explained that they were for the soldiers who died for the cause of USA in the wars in Irak and Afganistan. There was a memorial ceremony for them because it happened to be the Independent Day of the United States of America.

[Thousands of crosses and the flags,

We could see a hill just opposite side of the beach. The guide explained that there were luxurious mansions of rich people. On the other hand, I saw poor people just lying on the newspapers in the park there.

Since the climate of Los Angels is gentle and nice, the city attracts a lot of senior pepple as well as homeless people. According to Mr. A, the guide, there are also a lot of gay people there.

He mentioned that the regulation on drinking alchohole was quite strick in Los Angels, but people were generous about drugs and gays there.

We went to a unique restaurant named “The Vegi-grill” where they served “healthy” food without meat. They make hambergar without meat, but the hambergar tasted like meat.

[In front of Vegi-grill,

After having lunch, we went to Kodak Theather where Acadey Awards ceremony was held every year. Then we went to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre where there were hundreds of footprints, handprints and sigantures of famous motion picture personalities on the earth.

[At Kodak Theatre,

It seems that Marilyn Monroe is the most popular actress in the past. I saw her doll together with Shrek there.

After the Chinese Theatre, we headed for Griffith Observatory on the hill. The location of the observatory is quite nice. We could see good views of Los Angels, as well as the famous Holly Wood Sign on the side of the hill.

The last hotel of the tour was Kyoto Grand Hotel & Garden at Little Tokyo. Our room was on the 4th floor where we could see fireworks at the beach.

We had Japanese style dinner at a restaurant named “Miyako.” It was the first and the last Japanese style meal during a week tour: beautifully decorated foods in multitiered box including “tempura” as the main dish. My wife and I ordered a pitcher of “Asahi Beer” and shared it with our colleagues sitting next to us.

["Cheers" with Asahi Beer,

My wife enjoyed seeing fireworks from the window of our hotel room until midnight while I saw Japanese TV program (NHK international.)

The next day (July 5), before checking out, my wife and I enjoyed early morning walks around Little Tokyo.

On our way, a volunteer Japanese American, whose name is Mr. Kuwata, offered his help to lead us to the statue of Chiune Sugiwara.

According to Mr. Kuwata, a wealthy Jewish businessman offered the land and fund to build the statue of Mr. Chiune Sugiwara who issued thousands of emergency visa to Jewish when he was vice consul for the Japanese Empire in Lithuania.

[With the statue of Chiune Sugihara,

This statue is close to the former Union Church which was built in 1922 as the first Japanese Americans’ church in Los Angels.

There was a memorial monument which showed thousands of Japanese Americans had been sent to a concentration camp during 2nd World War.

To me, it seemed an ironical convination of the statue of Chiune who had saved more than 6 thousand Jews from Holocost in Eurpe, and the memorial statue of persecuted Japanese Americans during 2nd World War.

Another interesting statue is the statue of Kinjiro Ninomiya in front of Manufacturers Bank in Little Tokyo.

The statue of Kinjiro Ninomiya is the symbol of diligence of hard work in the early period of life. The Edo period boy was studying (reading a book) while laboring (carrying firewoods) and it used to be seen at many elementary school in Japan when I was a small boy (but not any more.) This was quite interesting to find this statue in Los Angels.

We left Los Angels at noon and went back to Japan next day.

[The take-off at Las Vegas,

[At Vegi-grill、

[A view from observatiory,

[A pitcher of beer costs $23、

[The explanation plate of Chiune Sugihara,

[With the statue of Kinjiro Ninomiya,

100703 the 5th day of USA tour (Sedona→Las Vegas:

July 3rd 2010 (Sat) The 5th day of the tour. Got the wake-up call at 5:30. Had breakfast at 6. We left Grand Canyon after the breakfast at 7.

We arrived at “Rim Edge” where “viewing platform” is. It’s really a terrific scene of historical view of earth.

Now we went down to the canyon from the high plateau. This reminded me of “Iroha” slope in Nikko. After landing on the bottom of canyon, we headed for a town called “Sedona.”

Sedona is located at the sacred power spots of native Americans where they had strong “healing power.”

According to the guide, Sedona became popular among Japanese sightseers since Namie Amuro visited here with her boyfriend several years ago.

Sedona is popular not only for Japanese, but also many Americans. 4 million people visit this town during a year, they say.

There are several regulations including the hight and color of buildings. We saw a green sign of McDonald shop which was red in the other places.

While having a free-time for leisurely stroke, Kikko dropped in a boutique named “Dahling It’s You Boutique” and did shopping for dresses for dance.

[Korean restaurant at Sedona,

After leaving Sedona, we stopped at a railway station of Grand Canyon Railway. There was a steam locomotive at the station, but it seemed only for “exhibition.”

We had all-you-can-eat buffet lunch at a Chinese restaurant named “ABC Restaurant” on our way to Las Vegas.

We happened to see a quarterfinal of World Cup South Africa game, Spain vs Paraguay. We saw the crucial moment of Spain’s goal there.

“If Japan won the game against Paraguay, we could see the game between Spain and Japan there, what a shame!” I thought.

We kept going for several hours in the wilderness and arrived at Las Vegas at around 4:30 pm. We checked in “Paris Las Vegas” which was under “the Eiffel Tower” in Las Vegas.

The lobby looked like a museum. There were beautiful pictures hanging on the walls. But there were no sofa or table. It’s just like a big hall. The first foor of the hotel was a casino where there were a lot of slot machines and tables for pokers.

The internect connection was available, but cost $15 for a day. It was a nice room and I took a picture of Kikko who wore the dress she had bought at Sedona during the day.

After checking in, we went to a designated restaurant named “LA VILLAGE BUFFET” on the first floor.

The first floor was just like the outside of Paris in the evening. The ceiling was painted just like the sky of Paris.

After the dinner at LA VILLAGE BUFFET, we went out for the night tour of Las Vegas. We were supposed to start at 8 pm, however, the guide came 15 minutes late because of “overheat” of his own car. Nobody complained and we patiently waited for him.

The first attraction was illumination show at Fremont Street, downtown. It started at 9 pm and lasted for about 10 minutes.

They played songs of “Doors,” and we heard the voice of Morrison who died in his 30s. The final music was “The Star-spangled Banner” because it was the eve of Independence Day.

After seeing “illumination show” we went to “Stratosphere Hotel & Casino.” The hotel has the tallest tower (350m) in the United States. We went to the observation decks which were above 108th floor of the tower.

The sights of Las Vegas from the observation decks were wonderful. There were several attractions even above 350 meters from the earth as below: (Quoted from Wikipedia.)

The top of the tower has two observation decks, a restaurant known as "Top of the World" (revolving restaurant), and three thrill rides:

Big Shot at 1,081 ft (329 m) is the highest thrill ride in the world.
Insanity, opened in 2005, at 900 ft (270 m) is the second highest thrill ride in the world; it dangles riders over the edge of the tower and then spins in a circular pattern at approximately forty miles per hour.
SkyJump Las Vegas, a controlled descent, Bungee jumping-like ride that will allow riders to plummet 855 ft (261 m) attached to a high speed, descent wire. SkyJump opened on April 20, 2010.
X-Scream at 866 ft (264 m) is the third highest thrill ride in the world.

We finished the sightseeing at around 11 pm and went back to the hotel. However, my wife and several other colleagues of the tour went on farther sightseeing: FOUNTAIN SHOW in front of Bellagio Hotel. I saw a part of the show from the bus on our way back to the hotel. But she was not satisfied with it, and got off the bus and saw three more times until the very last show at midnight. She came back to our room at almost 1 am midnight.

[Kikko began dancing with one of tour colleagues,

100702 4th day of USA trip (Grand Canyon - Monument Valley - Flagstaff)

July 2nd (Fri) 4th day of the tour. Wake-up call rang at 4:15 am. We went to the another cite of the rim where many sightseers saw the sun rise.

During the free-time, we seemed to have walked the longest distance, therefore we were the last ones to come back to the bus.

During the walk, we happened to see the Japanese family from Kentucky again. My wife remembered the fact that their eldest child’s birthday was July 2nd, so we all sang “Happy Birthday to You” to Hirori who was born on July 2nd , 1999.

We went back to the lodge at 6. I noticed that there were no vegitable for the breakfast. So American breakfast that morning was not my choice, but fair enough.

We left Grand Canyon at 7:30 and headed for the next destination; Monument Valley.

On the way to Monument Valley, we dropped in Cameron where they sell craftworks made by native Americans (the Navaho people.)

After leaving Cameron, we arrived at Monument Valley at around noon. We went to a restaurant run by the Navaho people. I liked the vegitalian lunch there very much.

While having lunch, the weather had changed suddenly. It began raining hard, but just for a few minutes.

I visited a small museum of the Navaho near the restaurant. Then we began the Monument Valley tour by smaller vehecles.

The scenes of Monument Valley were fantastic. These scenes were familier to me because I saw them in the Western Movies such as “Wagon Mastor.”

During the Monument Valley tour, it rained from time to time, yet we enjoyed this tour very much.

After the Monument Valley, we headed for a town named Fragstaff.

We had dinner at a Western style restaurant named “Blackbarts.” At Blackbarts, waiters and waitresses are students of an art school. They sing and dance while serving the guests as waiters and waitresses. Their songs and dances were nice and terrific!

We had steaks and drinks (red wine for my wife and dark beer for me.)

After having pleasant dinner and time, we checked in a hotel in Fragstaff.

I could use “wireless internet” for free at my room. I liked this hotel, but the speed of internet connection was a bit slow, I felt.
