100626 Soraksan, Shibee-Sonyotang Valley

June 26 (Sat) 2010, Cloudy, occasionally rain. It is much drier in Korea than Japan in the rainy season. It had been fine from Sunday through Friday this week, but on Saturday, it began raining.

This was the last hike in the first half of the year. I was to go back to Japan next day for summer vacation. The destination was Mt. Sorak in Gangwon province. We walked along the Shibee-Sonyo-Tang (Twelve Fairy Waterfalls) Valley.

It was the 272nd AhToSan regular hike, and for me, it was 206th hike to join them. It was also my 32nd hike for this year.

There were 42 members applied for this hike, but 7 of them cancelled because of the bad weather. Therefore, among 35 participants, there were only two foreingers, Masashi and me, 2 Japanese. Anyway, I like AhToSan because they never give up hiking even though the weather is very bad.

The bus left at 5 am at the Expo South Gate Parking Lot. We arrived at the entrance of the trail called “DaeSeungRyong Entrace” at almost 9 am. It was not yet raining then. We began walking after the exercise.

The trail from the entrance to the waterfall called “DaeSeung Waterfall” was well facilitated with wooden steps. We had a short break near the waterfall as “Suzuki Time” for fruits which I provided for other members. Then we had “makkori” time at the waterfall. However there was no water falling at the waterfall.

We arrived at DaeSeungRyong, the highest point of the day at 11 am. After taking a group picture, we walked along the ridge and had lunch at around noon.

Fortunately it did not begin raining until we finished our lunch. But it rained occasionally while we walk along the valley.

There were some yellow flowers along the trail while we were climbing the mountain. Then we saw a lot of “Hampak-kko” or “Oyama Mangolia” which were national flowers of North Korea.

I also noticed while leaves of “silver vine” as well as its flowers. The leaves of silver vines are usually white. But I notice that some of them were “pink,” especially those along the river in the valley.

I had been this valley 6 years alog with AhToSan hikers. When I saw these waterfalls, I was very much impressed by their beautiy. But this time, it seemed not so much impressive, maybe because of the unfavable weather.

However, this hike became one of the unforgettable hike for me because of the accident which I carelessly encountered at the end of this hike.

It was the last waterfall when I tried to take a picture from the top of the cliff, I slipped on the rock and fell into the waterpool!

When I realized, I was under the water. The rock was about 5 meter high. The waterpool was about 1 meter depth. Fortunately I got no harm excep a small scar in my finger. But I was soaked wet.

I was all right, but not my several gadets such as a digital camera, an MP3 and my cellphone. They all went out of order!

It was almost the end of the 6 hour-hike. I changed my cloths with my extra cloths, so it was all right.

After the hike, we went to a restaurant, as the “Tippuri” or after-the-hike party. Many members came to me to toast for cerebrating my safty. Some members said, “You got extra-life beause you were unharmed today. You may live for 150 years!”

I learned a valuable lesson; do not go hiking just before going back to Japan. If I got involved with any accident, I could not go home next day!

I had to leave all gadgets (a cellphone, a digital camera, an MP3) because they all got wet and became out of order.
