“Spring in Blackheath”
In October, I had some new findings for my trekking experiences in the Blue Mountains area. They are in Blackheath area.
Blackheath is 2 stations westwards from Katoomba, which is the center of the Blue Mountains region. It is about 130 km from Central station in Sydney and its altitude is a little bit higher than 1,000 m.
Its residential areas are especially beautiful with a lots of flowers in their gardens.
When I visited on Oct. 9, the double-petaled cherry blossoms were in full broom. rhododendrons of many different colors brooming one after another, and even waratah, the flowers of NSW were blooming.
Until now I visited the following three attractive areas in Blackheath.
1. Rhododendran Gardens
2. Govett’s Leap Lookout
3. Pulpit Rock Lookout
There is another famous lookout named “Evans Lookout and there is a nice track called “Grand Canyon Track” there. But I had not visited there yet.
I use the Blue Mountains Line to visit the Blue Mountains National Park regularly.
Katoomba is a center of Blue Mountains trekking activities, so I often visit this town, but in case of Blackheath, I do not visit so often.
As for Mt. Victoria, I have visited only a few times this year. (Including the time I lost my camera. SR25]
Terminal station of the Blue Mountains Line is “Lithgow,” three more stations from Mt. Victoria.
During 2019 – 20 Australian Bushfire season, the damages between Mt. Victoria and Lithgow area was the most serious and they resumed rail service only a few months ago.
When I led the Saturday hikers to Govett’s Leap Lookout in July most tracks starting the lookout were closed.
Then recently, “Chang,” the master of the Blue Mountains, who introduced me to the president of Blue Mountains Club, told me that Grand Canyon Track in Blackheath is open now.
The track-head of Grand Canyon Track is at Evans Lookout. So I went to Evans Lookout to pre-check the track on Oct. 9, and I was to lead Saturday hikers there next day, Oct. 10.
When I went to check the track alone, it was Friday. The train-bus connection was perfect, arriving Blackheath station at 10:30 and the bus leaving at 10:44. But Saturday, arriving time was 10:38 and bus time was 10:40. So, we could not use the bus.
On 10 October, Chang happened to join us. He knew the area and tracks well. So, he guided us (6 Saturday hikers and me) instead of me.
He avoided the bus route and led us via Blackheath Golf Course.
“Walls Cave”
The track-head of “Walls Cave” is on the way to Evans Lookout. You can see the sign for the track-head on Evans Lookout Road between the bus-stop and Evans Lookout.
I saw a termite mound at one side of the track to the valley. We heard cicadas buzzing while walking. Even I caught two cicadas on my way. They must be young and not experienced as adult cicadas. The color is bright, even beautiful.
Well, we go down zig-zag to the bottom of the valley. There is a creek with plenty of running water.
Soon we came to “Walls Cave.” It is about 10 m high ceiling cave. The creek runs in front of the cave. I took some pictures around the cave and returned to Evans Lookout road.
I am not good at climbing steps, and I began to walk the last of the group. Chang and I decided not to go to Evans Lookout that day. The rest of the group kept walking but we stopped on the way to the track-head of Walls Cave and had lunch there.
Chang and I went back to Blackheath station while the rest of the party headed for Evans Lookout. We dropped in a hotel bar behind the bus-stop and had a glass of Victoria Bitter. They tasted good.
“Grand Canyon Track”
My Great North Walk endeavor partner Isaac and I decided to go to Blackheath again next week. It was 13 of October, and the train-bus connection was perfect.
We took 10:44 bus and got off at Evans Lookout road. We walked for about 2 km until Evans Lookout.
The forest from Neates Glen Car Park to Evans Lookout were damaged by the bush-fire last year.
Almost all trees were burned. There barks are black but with many new branches and leaves. So these once burned trees are alive! Australian trees are persistent, and full of life! I also saw many flowers on the ground.
We arrived at Evans Lookout at 11:20 am. The track-head of Grand Canyon Track is on the right side of the lookout.
The track starts with steep stairs, probably 500 – 700 steps. Then we reach at the bottom of valley. There is a creek and track is along the creek.
The track is well facilitated, cool and nice. We met several family groups and even young parents with a baby carrying on their back.
It is a 6.3 km loop track. Walking about two third of the track, we came to a waterfall on the track.
I saw a youth equipped for caving (I guess he will go down to the deep hole like valley.) Another young guy was enjoying waterfall-bathing. When I was taking a picture of Isaac, he came to me and offered his hand to take our “two-shot” picture.
I like this Grand Canyon Track very much. Since the track goes to the bottom of valley, it is cool, and the track is full of different sceneries.
Most of all, from Evens Lookout, the steps are steep, but as for climbing up to Neates Glen Car Park, it is a gradual slope.
The track guide says 3 – 4 hours necessary, but it took us about 2 hours. We caught 13:42 bus and took 14:08 train at Blackheath.
It takes 2 hours and 12 minutes from Blackheath to Central. If we miss this train, we have to wait for one hour.
Now Grand Canyon Track has become one of my favorite tracks in the Blue Mountains

SR #28 「ブラックヒースの春」「ウォールズ・ケーブ・トラック」「グランド・キャニオン・トラック」
「ブラックヒースの春」
10月はブルーマウンテンのトレッキングで新しい発見があった。それは、ブラックヒース地区である。
ブラックヒースは、シドニーのセントラルから西方に約130㎞の高原を上ったカトゥンバ駅のさらに２つ先になる。
ここはブルーマウンテン地区で最も標高が高い(1000m～1060m)地域で、美しい住宅と色とりどりの花が咲く庭園多い。
この時期は先ず八重桜が咲き始め、同時に色とりどりのシャクナゲが咲き、それは美しい。
これまでブラックヒースで私の知っている場所は、主に次の3カ所であった。
・ 「シャクナゲ庭園(Rhododendran Garden)」
・ 「ゴベッツ・リープ・ルックアウト(Govett’s Leap Lookout)」
・ 「パルピット・ロック・ルックアウト(Pulpit Rock Lookout)」
ブラックヒースにはもう一つ有名な展望台である「エバンス・ルックアウト」がある。そこには「グランド・キャニオン・トラック」があるが私はまだ訪ねたことはなかった。
私はこれまでブルーマウンテン国立公園内をトレッキングするため、ブルーマウンテン・ラインをほぼ毎週のように使う。
ブルーマウンテン地区の中心地であるカトゥンバは、訪れない月はないが、その先のブラックヒースを訪ねるのは多くない。
さらにその先のマウント・ビクトリアは、これまで数回しか行ったことがない。(SR 25号でカメラを失くしたのはマウント・ビクトリアである。)
セントラルから出発する列車の終点はリスゴー(Lithgow)である。2019-2020年の山林火災ではこの終点付近の被害が甚大であったようで、復旧が最後になったのはマウント・ビクトリア～リスゴー間であった。
7月に上記のゴベッツリープ・ルックアウトを訪れた時、車でもアクセスできるルックアウト(展望台)は良いのだが、周辺のトレッキング・ルートは森林火災のためほとんど閉鎖されていた。
ところが、私を青山会の朱会長に紹介してくれたブルーマウンテンの達人のキムさんがブラック・ヒースの「グランド・キャニオン・トラック」がハイカーたちに解放されていると教えてくれた。
グランド・キャニオン・トラックの入り口はエバンス・ルックアウトである。そこでエバンス・ルックアウトへ10月9日に下見に行き、翌10日の土曜日に土曜ハイカーズの仲間とエバンス・ルックアウトに向かった。
下見の時は金曜日で、バスと列車の接続がよく、エバンス・ルックアウト・ロードまでバスでアクセスできたが、土曜日は列車がブラックヒースに到着するのが10:38で、バスの発車時刻が10:40。駅からバス停までどうしても5分以上移動時間がかかるためバスは利用できない。
土曜ハイカーズと同行した日は私を含めたメンバーの7名と、たまたま達人のキムさんが合流してくれたため、彼がグランド・キャニオン・トラックへ行く途中にある「ウォールズ・ケーブ」に案内してくれた。
彼は、バス通りを避けてゴルフ場経由で「エバンス・ルックアウト・ロードに出て、「ウォールズ・ケーブ」に向かった。
「ウォールズ・ケーブ」
ウォールズ・ケーブ・ウォーキング・トラックの入り口はエバンス・ルックアウト・ロードのバス停からエバンス・ルックアウトへ行く途中にあり、標識に従って左折すればよい。
トラックヘッドから渓谷へ下る道の途中に大きなアリ塚があった。
また、この日は春ゼミがかなりふ化して鳴いていて、まだ飛び方が上手でないセミを続けて2匹、手にすることができた。日本では見たことのない、明るい色のセミだった。
さて、トラックヘッドから約20分、つづら折りの急な道を下ると渓谷の底に着き、水量が豊かなクリークがあった。
クリークに沿って5分ほど下ると天井まで10mほどある大きなウォールズ・ケーブに到達した。
我々はクリークに沿った道で認証写真をとり、壁面に食い込んだ洞窟を見学した。
その後、エバンス・ルックアウト・ロードに登り返した。私とキムさんは、途中で土曜ハイカーズと別れ、彼らはエバンス・ルックアウトに向かい、私とキムさんは昼食をとった。
キムさんと私は昼食後、エバンス・ルックアウトには向かわず、ブラックヒース駅へ戻った。我々はバス停の背後にあるホテルのバーに入って、ビクトリアビターで乾杯し、14時台の列車で帰路についた。冷えた1杯のビールは美味だった。
「グランド・キャニオン・トラック」
私のグレート・ノース・ウォークの相棒のアイザックと私は、バスの連絡の良い平日の10月13日(火)に再度ブラックヒースを訪れた。
ブラックヒース駅到着時刻は10:30で、バスの出発は10:44、エバンス・ルックアウト・ロードのバス停から展望台までは約30分歩く。
途中、ニーツ・グレン駐車場(Neates Glen Car Park)からエバンス・ルックアウトまでの道の両側は昨年の山火事の傷跡が生々しい。
しかし、黒焦げの木々からはすでに若枝が伸び、みずみずしい葉が生い茂っている。
エバンス・ルックアウトからの展望は有名なカトゥンバのエコ・ポイントを始め、他の展望台からの眺望に勝るとも劣らない。
展望台には探検家エバンスの記念塔があり、展望台の右側にグランド・キャニオン・トラックのトラックヘッドがある。
ここからおそらく500～700段くらいの階段の道を谷底のクリークまで一気に下る。グランド・キャニオントラックはこのクリークに沿ってよく整備されたトラックだ。
実際、赤ん坊を抱えた若い夫婦や、子連れのファミリーともすれ違った。
途中、登山路の上から水が滝のように落ちている部分があったが、ここではケービングの装備をした若者や、裸で滝の水を楽しんでいる若者に出会った。
後者の若者は私がアイザックの写真を撮っていると、我々二人のツーショット写真を撮ってくれた。
深い渓谷へ下った道は、通常、また渓谷の上部まで登り返さなければならない。
グランド・キャニオン・トラックのエバンス・ルックアウトからニーツ・グレン駐車場までのコースでは下る道は急だが、最後の部分の上りが比較的緩やかで、上りが苦手な私にはありがたい。
ニーツ・グレン駐車場からバス停までの所要時間は30分ほどで、13:42のバスに乗車。ブラックヒース駅14:08の列車に乗車できたので非常に効率がよい。 我々の昼食は列車を待つ間に済ませた。[セントラル・ブラックヒース間の所要時間は片道2時間12分で、14:08を逃すと次は15:08である。]
かくしてグランド・キャニオン・トラックはブルーマウンテンの多くのトラックの中で、私が最も気に入ったトラックの１つになった。
