DR #198 “My Last Autumn in Daejeon”

Dear DR readers,

This will be my last autumn in Daejeon. I already experienced my last summer in Daejeon this year.

But I always go back to Japan during the summer, so what I can report about experiences in summer is not in Korea, but in Japan.

I climbed 6 nice mountains in Japan in July including Mt. Fuji, Mt. Myoko, Mt. Gassan and Mt. Hakkouda (These are 4 of 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.)

It has been my custom to visit Sydney, Australia during summer (in north hemisphere.) However, my wife and I visited Perth in West Australia for the first time.

We visited our Australian friend, Tracey, and we drove together to Margaret River.

So those were my summer report.

I came back to Korea early August, and I enjoyed summer hiking with AhToSan, too.

The second semester started in September. It will be my last chance to teach students in Korea.

I have been teaching Japanese to the 2nd and the 3d year students this time.

I used to have night classes in the past several years, but there was no such class this year.

So, I taught only 7 hours a week. I have been paid by hours, so it was about half of the necessary living cost which I could earn.

But thanks to God that I got enough pension from Japan since 2 years ago.

I could enjoy my life in Korea by writing more blog, or going to see movies, etc.

In my experience, autumnal colors are more colorful and beautiful in Daejeon than in Kamakura.

I guess it’s because the difference of temperatures between summer and winter is big in Daejeon than in Kamakura.

I could enjoy beautiful autumn colors during the hiking with AhToSan or whoever.

My walking pace with AhToSan had been rather slow among members since I returned to Korea last summer.

I used to be in the last group of AhToSan hikers until the end of October.

Then my old friend from Toyama Prefecture came to Korea for the first time on Oct. 25.

He is a big fan of Winter Sonata, so we went to a guided tour to Namiseom on Oct. 26.

Then we went to climb Gyeryongsan together. We could walk about 10 km course within 5 hours.

After this hike, it seemed that I regained the walking-fast-power.

I climbed 4 different mountains starting at Mt. Jiri in 4 weeks. All of these hike, I was not in the last group.

Beside these autumn hiking, I joined a special event of digging sweet potatoes at a rental farm in Yuseong.

10 AhToSan members joined this event, and while having “wrap-up party,” they celebrated my 66th birthday!

Just 3 days later in the same week, my international friends celebrated my birthday, too.

They were my Stammtisch friends, from Ukraine, Australia and Korea.

Talking about international friendship, I used to enjoy international meeting called IDP (International Dinner Party) every Friday from 2004 to 2009.

Grace and Barnabas, a Korean couple opened their home for international friends for dinner.

I met many international friends there and some of them became enthusiastic AhToSan hikers.

To my great pleasure, Grace and Barnabas resumed this IDP meeting starting from last Friday.

They said they would hold IDP meetings twice a month, every 2nd and 4th Friday.

Then I can attend IDP 6 times until I leave Korea in March. I look forward to these meetings very much.

There is another group which I regularly attend ever since I was working at ETRI in 2003.

That is the Bible Study at ETRI every Wednesday.

Several Christians at ETRI got together during the lunch break on Wednesday.

We have been using several books beside the Bible. Currently we are using “Experiencing God in Your Workplace” by Mike and Debi Rogers.

We use Korean version. So it is necessary to prepare at least one hour or two for me before the class.

I always get “challenge” from God and spiritually inspired by attending the class.

Today, we studied the relationship between Maslow's hierarchy of needs and God’s order.

I think, I am secured the 1st and 2nd needs; physiological needs and safety needs.

今年の夏は恒例のオーストラリア旅行で、長男一家がするNSWのチャッツウッド以外に、今年の冬に来日したトレイシーを訪ねて西オーストラリア州のパースを訪問した。

パースは地中海気候でイタリア人の移民が多く、トレイシーの新しい仕事はイタリア系オーストラリア人の看護だ。

彼女が仕事を始める前だったのでいっしょにマーガレットリバーのファームスティを楽しむことができた。

7月中の日本での登山は、恒例の富士山の他、妙高、月山、八甲田山など百名山を中心に楽しんだ。

私は8月の初めには韓国へ戻り、韓国で最後の夏山を楽しんだ。

9月からの大徳大学ではついに最後の学期となるが、2年及び3年の2学年を担当した。

2年の登録者数は38名で、実際の受講者数は36名。3年の登録者数は35名だったが、学期の始まる前からすでに就職が決まり、研修が始まっている者が多く、また、学期の途中でも、面接を受けたり、就職が決まったりで、実質的に受講した学生は12人だった。

この数年間、実施していた夜間特講も今年は実施されず、私の授業は昼間の週7時間だけだった。

私は時間講師なので、収入はこれまでの半減だったが、時間的にはずいぶん余裕のある最後の1年だった。

学生たちはみな軍役を済ませて復学しているので、みなそれなりに人生経験を積んでいる。

その生活態度で私の方が学ぶべきと思う学生も毎年数人いる。彼らとは今後も連絡を取り合いたいと思う。

さて、自覚しての最後の秋の体験だが、登山は1回1回がいとおしい。

8月に韓国へ戻ってからの登山は、毎回、最後のグループとの山行となるか、まったく一人、遅れて歩く登山が続いた。

アトサン山岳会のお荷物になるのはいけないと思いつつ、どうしても遅れてしまう自分に自信を失いかけていた。

そんななか、富山県の友人が10月末に初めて訪韓した。彼を案内して「冬ソナツアー」に参加した後、二人で鶏龍山を登山した。

この時のコースレコードはアトサンの仲間と同じコースを登った時とほぼ同じで、大変快調だった。

そして11月に入ってからこれまで4回の登山は、智異山・万福台、亀尾(クミ)の金烏山(クモサン)、大邱の八公山、潭陽(タムヤン)の秋月山とすべて快調に中間以上の仲間と登山できた。自信が回復するともに感謝である。

それぞれの山できれいな紅葉を楽しんだのはもちろんであるが、毎日の生活の中でも、例えば大学へ通う道での紅葉、近所のマンションの敷地内での紅葉もみごとであった。

また、11月4日は私の誕生日であるが、その前日の日曜日の午後、アトサンの芋ほりイベントに参加した時、アトサンの仲間から誕生日を祝ってもらったことも忘れられないイベントとなりそうだ。

私が韓国へ来た2003年から続いている水曜日の外国人の会話サロンであるスタムティッシュでも、レギュラーメンバーであるマルタ夫妻が私のためにバースデーケーキを買って祝ってくれたのもありがたい。

外国人の集いと言えば、やはり私がETRIで勤務していたころから、2009年まで続いていたIDP(International Dinner Party)が今月第4金曜日に復活した。

主催者のグレイスとバルナバ夫妻は、今後毎月第2及び第4金曜日に開催するというので、私は来年3月末に韓国を離れるまであと6回参加できるのが楽しみである。

もう1つ、私がETRIで勤務していた時以来、ETRIを離れても続いているクリスチャンの聖書研究会がある。

毎週水曜日の昼休みの30分間の勉強会だが、韓国語での勉強会のため、私は予習に１～2時間をかけている。

この勉強会では毎回自分の魂に「チャレンジ」を受けているが、今日の箇所ではマズローの「欲求段階説」が取り上げられていた。

131103 Digging Sweet potatoes and My 66th Birthday at Farm in Yuseong, Daejeon, Korea

Date & Time: In the afternoon of Nov. 3, 2013

Place: Weekend Farm of Yuseong-gu near Sutonggol, Daejeon

Participants: Alain Delon (the president of AhToSan), Mr. & Mrs. KS (Korean Standard), Mr. & Mrs. Jeongdaum, Mr. & Mrs. Summit Conquerer, Autumn Diary, Minju, Two new-comers (10 people including myself)

Alain Delon rents a piece of farm at Yuseong-gu. He takes care of his rental farm usually on Sunday.

He planted sweet potatoes and “Colocasia esculenta” (Binomial name) or “Eddoe” in his farm.

He told AhToSan members, “If you have time in the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 3, please come to my farm and take these potatoes as much as you like.”

Mr. & Mrs. KS, the couple of strong hikers, encouraged me to join this event.

They came to pick me up in front of the church in Shinseongdong. So, after the morning service of the church and fellowship luncheon, I went into their car.

They drove their car to another part of Yuseong-gu to pick “Autumn Diary” in front of her apartment.

Her apartment is on the 23rd floor of a newly build apartment. She could enjoy good views of Sutonggol mountains every day.

We arrived at the farm at 2:10 pm. The couple of “Summit Conguerer” another strong hiker, were already there, digging sweet　potatoes.

At almost the same time, Mr. & Mrs. Jeongdaum came to the farm, and these three couples did very good job of digging potatoes.

Soon Alain Delon came to his farm with farm tools such as shovels and pickaxes.

I joined their work of digging sweet potatoes with small shovels. It was fun to dig ground and take these sweet potatoes.

After digging all sweet potatoes, they began to work with “Toran토란” in Korean language. “Toran” is called “Satoimo里芋” in Japanese.

I vaguely remember that my parents used to plant these "satsumaimo" or "sweet potatoes" and “satoimo” at the rental farm in 1950s and 1960s.

“Toran토란” or “Satoimo里芋” have been important vegetables in South Asia and not popular in Western world.

Mr. KS used a pickaxe very well, and Mrs. KS took off small potatoes from the main potatoes effectively. They worked in a good combination.

While we were working at Alain Delon’s farm, Minju, a staff member of AhToSan joined us with some foods and drinks.

When we finished our farming work at around 3 pm, two more ladies joined us. They were the new commers to AhToSan who joined the hike only the previous day (Nov. 2nd) for the first time.

They shared the potatoes with these members. And we all began having “Wrap-up” party.

While having the wrap-up party, the owner of the farm visited the "Rest Area." She farms out her land to many people including Alain Delon.

She herself does farming. She began taking care of her land just next to the "Rest Area."

The plants she was taking care of were "Nobiruノビル" or "wild chive" or "Dallae달래" in Korean.

She was picking gravels or small stones away, and giving the plants chemical fertilizer."

I thought working constantly at her old age may keep people healthy and live long, just like my mother-in-law who are over 90 years old in Yamagata Prefecture in Japan.

While chatting with other members, I told them that the next day, Nov. 4 is my 66th birthday.

Then “Autumn Diary” said, “Let’s celebrate Suzuki’s birthday” and she went to buy a birthday cake and more foods and drinks.

KS brought two burners and began cooking ramen while they went for shopping.

We worked for one hour and enjoyed drinking and eating for nearly two hours.

午前中「夢或る教会」の礼拝後、教会の昼食会に参加した。昼食会ではサツマイモが出たが、午後から芋ほりをするからと言って食べなかった。

KS夫妻が新城洞前13:40の約束通り、車で迎えに来た。

まず、「秋の日記」をピックアップするため、彼女のマンション前へ向かった。

彼女のマンションは新しい建物で23階だという。すばらしい。きっとよい眺めを楽しめることだろう。

「秋の日記」も同乗してアランドロン会長の畑に向かった。

場所は儒城区のストンコルの近くの小高い丘の上で午後2時10分に到着した。

農場には野菜の他、さまざまな花も咲いていて興味深い。最初に見つけた花は小さな赤い花で、韓国語では「トングルイプリュホンチョ둥근잎유홍초」と言う。「トングルイプ」とは「丸い葉」で「リュホンチョ」は漢字語で「留紅草」と書く。

この花の名前を始め、私が知らなかった植物の名前は、私がアトサンのウェブサイトで質問したら、すべて「キュモク(규목)」日本語では「ケヤキ」というニックネームの会員が教えてくれた。

ちなみに、「トングルイプリュホンチョ둥근잎유홍초」の日本語を調べると「マルバルコウソウ」と韓国語そっくりである。

さて、農場には「頂上征服」夫妻がすでに到着して芋ほり作業を始めていた。

KS夫妻が作業を始めると、アランドロン会長が農具をたずさえて現れた。

サツマイモの種類は2種類で「ホバクコグマ」と「パムコグマ」で、スコップや小型のスキのような道具を使って掘ると面白いようにおおきなサツマイモが顔を出した。

ちなみに「コグマ」とは「サツマイモ」のことであり、「ホバク」とはカボチャ、パムとはクリのことである。

ひとしきりサツマイモを掘ったのち、サトイモにとりかかった。

サトイモの葉はアランドロンが刈取り、その後をKSがツルハシを振るって効率よく掘り出した。

掘り出したサトイモは女性群が手際よく親芋から分離した。

サツマイモとサトイモの他にもカレーの原料に使うと言う生姜に似た「ウコン」もかなり収穫したが、この「ウコン」の収穫の様子は見逃してしまった。

ここで畑の外に目を転じてみると、気になる植物がいろいろ目についた。

まずはブドウのように見える植物があったが、これは前述の「キュモク」すなわち「ケヤキ」さんによれば、「ミククジャリコン(미국자리공)」で、日本語に訳せば「米国のヤマゴボウ」だ。

これもウィキペディアで調べると、日本語では「ヨウシュヤマゴボウ(洋種山牛蒡)」というから、そっくりなネーミングである。ところで、見た目には「ヤマゴボウ」と「ヨウシュヤマゴボウ」は似ているが、種という点では前者はキク科であり、後者はヤマゴボウ科で全く異なり、重要なことは前者は食用になり、後者は毒草という点である。

さて、作業はほんの1時間ほどで終わり、農具をしまったり、トイレが付いている納屋のような簡単な建物があり、その中で「打ち上げ」をすることになった。

ミンジュがマッコリ4本を持参し、つまみはキムチジョンやカレトックなどを加え、掘りたてのサツマイモを削って生で食べたりした。

ちょうど「打ち上げ」を始めた頃、前日の登山に初めて参加してフミとしてチョンジョン大将に世話になった二人の女性が到着した。

すでに作業は終わっていると言ってもめげず、そのほかの山菜を採ったりしたほか、サツマイモやサトイモも分けてもらったようだ。

打ち上げのさなか、この農場全体の所有者というハルモニが３輪オートバイでやってきて、ノビルに肥料を与える作業を始めた。

貸農場は年間５万ウォン？ずいぶん安いようだ。農具の貸し出しも儒城区が無料で行うなど、公的支援もあるようだ。

さて、そのうち話のはずみで明日が私の誕生日だと知ると、秋の日記が後から来た会員と共に買い出しに行って、誕生ケーキと追加の焼酎・ビールや袋ラーメン、甘柿などを買ってきた。

誕生ケーキにはキャンドルを立て、みんなで「センイルチュッカハムニダ」を歌ってくれた。

その後、2台のガスバーナーと2個の鍋を使ってラーメンを煮て、後から来た会員が採った山菜を加え、みんなでおいしく食べた。

2時から3時まで、わずか1時間の作業の後、「打ち上げ」と「誕生パーティ」を2時間以上かけて楽しみ、3人のカップルはそれぞれ女性が運転し、男性はKSのみが運転して帰路についた。

KSはアランドロンの車を運転して彼のアパート前まで届け、その後ミセスKSと共に私を新城洞まで送ってくれた。たいへん楽しい日曜の午後であった。
