Partners: KS (NTT College Classmate) from Toyama, Japan

KS is not only a big fan of Winter Sonata, but also a good hiker in Japanese mountains.

His hometown is in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, but he dared to work at an NTT Nagano Office in Nagano Prefecture for decades, since he loved hiking.

Nagato is close to Matsumoto city where it is regarded as the base for hikers to Japanese Alps.

So, I invited him to climb a famous Korean mountain; Gyeryongsan with me.

I went to see KS at the lobby of Hotel Riviera in Yuseong at 8:45 am.

On the street in front of the hotel, we saw a white dog showing its face out of the car window. He looked cute.

We took #107 bus to Donghaksa Temple at Yuseong at 9 am.

I had never gone to Gyeryongsan on Sunday, because, I usually go to a morning service nearby my studio apartment on Sunday.

So, it would be my first, and last hiking to Mt. Gyeryong on Sunday.

The bus was jam-packed with hikers. And I noticed that there were many young people around me, mostly foreigners.

Some of them were talking in Korean language. One girl, seemed Japanese, was talking with a pretty Caucasian girl in Hangul. So I asked her “Are you Japanese?” in Korean. She replied “yes.” So we talked in Japanese on the bus.

I found out that these young foreigners were students learning Korean language at ChungNam University which I also studied in 2006,

The pretty Caucasion girl was Russian, and there were many Chinese students as well.

We got off at Donghaksa Bus Terminal, and they went first to the mountain by themselves.

I went to a kimpap shop and bought two sets of kimpap, while KS went to smoke for a while.

There were many customers at the kimpap shop and I had to wait for my turn for about 15 minutes.

The woman at Kimpap Shop were making roles of kimpap very effectively. She made two sets of kimpap maybe within two minutes.

But there were many customers. So, I had to wait for 15 minutes.

When I got my kimpap, I lost the site of KS. I shouted for him, then he was about 20 meters away from the shop.

He said he wanted to throw an emply can after drinking canned coffee, but he could not find any garbage can. He finally got a helpful hand of a female clerk at a shop. He was very happy that the lady helped him.

We turned right at the fork point of Seoul Restaurant as usual. (If you go straight to Donghaksa, they charge 3000 won for the entrance. But if you turn right, then you can escape being charged.)

We saw red maple leaves near the entrance of the trail. Then we began walking toward Keun-Baejae.

We arrived at Keun-Baejae at 11 am. We had a short rest for coffee.

Then we headed for Nanmae-Tap, the famous stone pagoda in Gyeryongsan.

We arrived at Nanmae-Tap at 11:20, but it was too crowded and there was no empty bench. So we kept climbing the mountain.

We arrived at Sambulbong Pass at 11:40. We found a little space to sit down. So we had lunch there.

It was his first experience to eat “kimpap” but he liked it very much. We have similar food called “norimakiのりまき” but in my opinion, “kimpap” tastes better than “norimaki.”

Japanese people use one or two ingredients for norimaki, but Korean people use 6 or 7 ingredients for kimpap, maybe that’s why kimpap tastes better than norimaki.

Anyhow, we spent a little time to eat kimpap and went to Sambulbong. We arrived at the summit of Sambulbong at 12:00 noon.

Again it was very crowded so we spent a short time there and kept walking along the ridge.

When we came down from the summit of Sambulbong and when we were walking on the trail, an old hiker fell down just behind of us. He looked completely exhausted.

He seemed alone hiker, but hikers around him tried to help.

Later, we saw a helicopter flew in above the place where the old man fell down. It seemed that emergency and rescue team successfully picked him up and brought him to the hospital.

It was a fine day, and we stopped at several nice spots and took pictures along the ridge.

We saw the helicopter when we were climbing the final stairs toward Gangeumbong.

We arrived at the summit of Gangeumbong at 13:20.

Again there wre many hikers, esp. around the stone monument of Gangeumbong.

We had to make a line to take pictures. To my surprise, those who were in front of me, were those foreign students we saw on the bus!

I took a picture of a Chinese girl and a boy, then including the Japanese and Russian girls picture.

I also aked KS to take a picture of the Russian girl and myself. All done within a minute.

I asked the Japanese girl to write down her e-mail address and her name, so that I could send her pictures.

I found out that her name was Maki and she was from Tokyo.

They did not hike the whole course like us, but just go to Gangeumbong and return to Donghaksa.

We left the summit of Gangeumbong, after taking the pictures, and arrived at the famous waterfall called “Eumseon Waterfall” at 2:14.

There was no water in the waterfall because of the dry season. Anyway, we took our pictures at the waterfall, then went down to Donghaksa.

Donghaksa is a famous nunnery with beautiful garden. We arrived at the bell tower of Donghaksa at 14:44.

We came back to the restaurant named “Baekunjang” at a little after 3 pm.

The table seat was at the open-air space, and when we asked the clerk if it’s OK to smoke, he said “yes” but there was no astray.

KS carries portable astray with him, so he took out of his astray. Seeing this the clerk marveled and liked the manner of KS.

We ordered “Bindaetteok” or “Mung - Bean Pancake” and “Baeksuk” or “boiled chicken soup.”

We soon finish “Bindaetteok” but “Baeksuk” was not ready yet. So, I ordered “”Pajeon” or “Green onion Pancake.”

When “Baeksuk” and “Pajeon” were ready, the volume of the foods were too much to consume for two of us.

The clerk was a very attentive person. He offered to put them in “to-go” box, and I enjoyed eating them for 2 days.

KS liked “Cass” beer, each cost 5000 won (750cc). We also consumed a lot of beer with delicious foods,

Two hour dinner cost 80,000 won, the same price we paid at a Korean style barbecue restaurant at Dongdaemun Market on Friday night.

After the party, we headed for the Donghaksa Bus Stop, then we faced a problem. The roads were so crowded with automobiles (obviously of hikers.) No matter how long we waited, no bus came to the bus stop.

The person who was doing traffic control at the parking lot, urged us to walk to the next bus stop.

So we began to walk toward the next bus stop.

For KS, it was a great fun, because he could see many open-air stalls and shops along the street.

When he saw a man dressed with lady’s costume, and singing Korean songs, he liked it very much.

He was especially happy when he found rice paddy. Since he does farming at his hometown in Toyama, he was very curious about farming in Korea.

We walked about for 30 minutes, and when we came to a bus stop named “Hakbongri” some people were waiting for the bus.

Among the crowd, I found “Maki” and her friends there. So, we decided to join them.

Then soon, the bus came. It was almost full, but we managed ourselves into the bus. The bus became completely full and jam-packed.

I was happy that we could managed into the bus, but when we came to the next bus stop, more people were waiting for the bus.

The bus driver judged not to open the door of the bus because the bus wad completely full. Then many people came in front of the bus and began hitting the bus with their fists angrily.

Wow, it was my first experience to see people acted that way. It looked like a riot assult, and the bus driver called the police.

Actually, the driver opened the door, and people shouted, “We had been waiting for the bus for an hour! Why you did not open the door!” But only no one could get into the bus. The bus was fully jam-packed.

The patrol car had arrived and two policemen tried to control the mob. They called the bus company and asked them to send more buses.

Then the mob became quiet and let our bus go.

KS said, it would never happen in Japan. Japanese people were gentle, and they may easily give up, but Koreans had more vitality and not easily gave up.

I had the same opinion.

We came back to Yuseong at 7 pm and I escorted him to his hotel front desk.

It was a long day, just like the previous day. But KS seemed satisfied with his first hiking in Korea, and delicious foods and drinks after the hiking.

冬ソナの熱狂的フアンであるKSのもう一つの趣味は登山である。

KSはNTTの現役時代、自ら望んで長野県長野市へ単身赴任した。それは名だたる名山のひしめく日本アルプスのベースだからだ。

この日はテジョンハイカーズが大屯山へ行く日だったので、KSにも国際交流がてら軽いハイキングをしないかもちかけた。しかしKSは英語で交流するのは乗り気でなく、私と二人で鶏龍山に登る方を望んだ。

我々はリベラホテルで9時に待ち合わせの約束だったが、早めに着くと彼も早めに部屋から下りて来てたので、早く出発した。ホテルの前で信号待ちをしていると。車の窓から体を出したかっこいい白い犬をみかけた。

おもわず、写真を撮ったが、我々は地下鉄儒城駅5番出口のバス停で107番バスを待ち、9時にはすでにバスに乗車した。

私は日曜日は通常、近所の教会の礼拝に参加するため、登山することはまれだ。したがって日曜日に鶏龍山へ行くのはこれが最初で最後だろう。

さて、我々が満員のバスに乗ると、運転手はKSに目的地を聞いた。

彼は鶏龍山と答えたが鶏龍山というバス停はない。「東鶴寺(トンハクサ)」だと教えると料金1650ウォンは先払い。

私はいつもカードを使うので現金払いの場合の料金は知らなかった。

さて、満員のバスのなかで周りに若者たちがいるのに気が付いた。

日本人らしい娘が、人形のような顔をした娘と韓国語で話している。後ろには明らかに中国人らしい数人が中国語で話している。

わたしが「イルボンサラミエヨ(日本人ですか)?」と聞くとはたして彼女は日本人で、忠南大学へ奨学金留学をしている東京出身の学生だとわかった。 西洋人の方はロシア人で、いっしょに韓国語を学ぶクラスメートだと言う。

バスを降りてから分かれたが、その後、昼過ぎに彼らとは観音峰で再会することとなった。

さて、下車したのは9時半だったが、キムパプを買うため、おばさんの前で約15分間、待った。

おばさんが手際よくキムパプを造る手際に感心して、自分の番までその手順を見学した。

彼女はゴマをまぶしたご飯を掴み、そのまま海苔の上に触れてご飯の粘着力で海苔を手許に引き寄せる。

その海苔を板の上に敷いてそのうえにご飯を置いて、さらに目の前に並んだ沢庵の細切りをはじめとする6種類の具を次々とならべ、最後にご飯と海苔を包るむ。

最後に、包丁ですっすっと切ってアルミホイールで包んでできあがり。

2列ずつ作るがその所要時間はたぶん1分か1分30秒ほどだ。

しかし、客が多いため、私の番まで時間がかかった。

KSはその間に煙草を吸い、カンコーヒーを飲み、その空き缶を捨てる場所を探してうろうろしていた。

私はキムパプが買ってから彼を探したが、付近には見当たらず、約20メートルほど前にいた。

親切な店のアガシが空き缶を引き取ってくれたと感動していた。

白雲荘食堂の前の分かれ道は10時に出発し、クンペジェには11時に到着したからなかなかいいペースで歩いた。

クンペジェで簡単にコーヒー休憩し、男妹塔(ナンメタプ)には11時20分に着いた。

彼は男妹塔も気に入ったが長居はせず、すぐに三仏峰をめざした。

三仏峰峠で11時40分だったがここで昼食にした。朝購入したキンパプはKSも気に入って、彼と1本ずつ食べた。

三仏峰にはちょうど12時に到着。ここも人が多く、長居は無用。しかし、天気が良いせいで鶏龍山の峰々は良く見える。写真撮影を済ませて、ただちに自然城陵の尾根歩きに入った。

三仏峰からの急階段を下り、峰の裏側を歩いている時、すれ違った高齢者と思われるハイカーが突然倒れ、自分のスティックを折ってしまった。

周りのハイカーが助け起こしていたが、その後119山岳救助隊を呼んだらしくヘリコプターが救助に来たのを自然城陵(チャヨンソンルン)の尾根歩きをしている時に目撃した。

この日は下山するまでの間にさらに2回、ヘリコプターが飛来し、三人目は東鶴寺へ下りてから人をつるして飛んでいるのを目撃した。

登山者も多いので事故も多いのだろう。ちなみに、日本で救助を依頼すると費用は依頼者が払うと言われるが、韓国では無料である。これはうらやましい限りだ。

さて、途中良いスポットで写真を撮りながら自然城陵を進んだが、観音峰には午後1時20分に到着した。

ここは相変わらず大変な混雑ぶりで写真撮影は順番待ち。するとすぐ前のグループが往路の満員バスであった忠南大韓国語教室の学生たちだった。

中国人の女の子と男子学生のツーショットの後、日本人とロシア人の娘を含む3人ショットを撮り、さらにKSに頼んでロシア人の娘との撮影にも成功した。

日本人の学生にはメルアドを聞いて写真を送ることを約束した。日本人学生の名前は「マキ」ということを知った。

この学生たちは三仏峰には行かず、東鶴寺～観音峰のピストンだったようだ。

彼女らとは写真撮影後すぐに分かれ、我々は下山を急いだ。

観音峰から隠仙滝へ下る道は最初の15分ほどは非常に急坂で石だらけの悪路であるため注意を要する。

隠仙滝が近づくにつれ下山路は緩やかになり、紅葉が見事だった。

水の全くない隠仙滝に着いたのは2時14分で、ここまで下ると下山路はさらにゆるか蚊になる。

隠仙滝からさらに30分ほど下ると、東鶴寺に到着した。東鶴寺はいつ来ても季節の花が美しい。

また、他の寺の境内もそうだが、すばらしいクヌギの巨木が随所にある。

また、この日は特別な日だったのか、東鶴寺境内で食べ物の店が出店していて、トッポッキ(떡볶이)を売っていた。境内でこのように店が出ているのは初めて見た。きっと寺の直営なのだろう。試食してみればよかったと後になって後悔した。

韓国の有名な寺にはその参道に沿って参拝客を対象にした食堂が並ぶ場合が多い。東鶴寺はもちろんその一つだ。

私は前回使った食堂が良かったので同じ店を目指したが、その手前に「忠北食堂」という店があり、その看板になぜかダックスフンドの犬の写真が飾ってある。

そして目の前を見るとそのダックスフンドが店の前に立っている。その犬には鎖は無く、自由に行き来している。どうもこの犬は「看板娘」ならぬ「看板犬」らしい。

このダックスフントはかわいかったが、我々は予定通り白雲荘食堂に向かった。テーブルについたのは3時9分だったからちょうど5時間のハイキングだった。

ヘビースモーカーであるKSは登山中、一度もタバコを吸わなかったので約5時間の禁煙を実行した。そして店に着くや否や従業員に喫煙の可否を訊ね、OKが出てから嬉しそうにタバコを吸った。

また、ビールは金曜日の夜の東大門の焼肉屋で始めて飲んだ「カス(CASS)」ビールが気に入ったので、これがあるか尋ねた。

すべて彼の希望通りになって、大変満足な様子であった。また、店に灰皿はなく、従業員は彼が取り出したポータブル灰皿を興味深げに見ていた。

白雲荘食堂ではまずピンデットク(빈대떡緑豆チヂミ)を2枚注文し、続いて鶏のスープ(ペクスク백숙)を注文した。これは前回5人で１つ注文した代物でとても二人では食べきれなかった。

また、ピンデットクはすぐに食べ終わったのでパジョン(파저ねぎチヂミ)を注文したがこちらも大きくて食べきれなかった。

これ以外にもツケダシが多くビールがはかどり、2時間飲み食いして残った分は店の主人が気を利かせて包装してくれた。

結局私が持ち帰って食べたが二日間食べ続けてようやくきれいに食べ終わった。

料金は東大門の牛の焼肉と同じ8万ウォンだったが、飲んだビールの量も考えればリーズナブルだろう。(ちなみにビールは「カス」の750ccで1本5000ウォンだった。)

5時過ぎまで飲み食いしてバス停に向かったが、道路がハイカーの車で大混雑でバスがこない。

係員らしい男がバス停１つ先まで行けというので、大混雑の車の横を歩いてバス停を１つ２つ先まで歩いた。

この「散歩」はKSにとって大変興味深いものとなったようだ。というのは、道路に沿って屋台がたくさん並んでいて、どれも彼にはめずらしい風景だったからだ。

特に女装をした男性がマイクを握って上手に歌を歌っているのみ魅入ってしまった。

また、屋台が切れた一部分に、田んぼが見えた時、彼はとても喜んだ。というのは彼は富山の自宅の周りで農業を営み、米を生産しているので、韓国の農業の様子、とくに田んぼを見たがっていたからだ。

約30分ほど歩いて「鶴峰里」というバス停まで下ると、なんと観音峰で会った「マキ」さんを含む外国人の学生たちがバスを待っていた。

バスはまもなく来たがすでに満員状態で、むりやり乗せてもらったら完全に飽和状態になった。

それでもバスに乗れてやれやれと思ったら、約10分ほど先の次のバス停でも大勢のハイカーがバスを待っていた。

これ以上はもう無理と判断した運転手はドアを開けずに行こうとしたら、待っていたハイカーたちがすごい剣幕でバスをところかまわず叩き、ドアを開けろと騒いだ。

運転手が仕方なくドアを開けても飽和状態は飽和状態でいかんともしがたい。乗れないハイカーたちの騒ぎが収まらずバスは動けない。

警察を呼べという声に運転手は警察を呼んだ。パトカーが駆け付けたが、ハイカーたちは収まらない。

バスの運転手や警官がバス会社に電話して緊急にバスを送るよう手配し、ようやくバスが動き出した。

この騒ぎでバスは30分以上足止めされ、儒城に着いたのは7時過ぎとなった。

我々は公州食堂でもう十分飲み食いしていたので温泉に入ったり、飲んだりするのは止めて、KSがこの日のチェックインをするのを見届けて私は新城洞へ帰った。

KSのこの騒ぎに対する感想は「韓国の人たちは活力にあふれている。日本人は無気力というか、無抵抗だろうな」であるが、私も共感した。

KSにとって初めての韓国のハイキングであったが、十分堪能したようである。また、下山後の打ち上げも充分満足したようであった。
