Date: Oct. 12, (Sat) 2013, fine

Destination: Shinbulsan (神仏山신불산1,209m), Ulsan(蔚山울산), GyongNam Province(慶南경남)

Course:

A: Baene Pass – Ganwolsan – Ganwal Pass – Shinbulsan – Shinbul Pass – Shinbul Plain – Yongchuksan – Cheongsugol Lodge (15 km, 6.5 hours)

B: Baene Pass – Ganwolsan – Ganwal Pass – Shinbulsan – Shinbul Pass - Cheongsugol Lodge (12 km, 5 hours) [I took B course.]

Participants: 41 AhToSan members

[A map for the hiking,

The destination, Ulsan is rather far from Daejeon, so we left South Gate Bus Stop at 6 am.

I got up at 3:50 and prepared for the hike and left my studio apartment at 5:30 by bicycle.

The AhToSan bus was almost full. There were only 3 vacant seats including the one next to mine.

We arrived at Baene Pass at around 9:30, and began hiking to climb a gentle trail toward Ganwolsan.

[A group picture before the hike,

[The guidepost at the entrance,

I walked for the first part of the hike with a big guy who sat next to me when I climbed Myobong on Aug. 31.

[The first part of the trail,

The trail was rather crowded, and a hiker just behind me was listening his radio with loud speaker, not using earphones.

[Gentiana scabra (or Japanese gentian),

I do not like such a manner. So, I told him to use earphones, but he just ignored my complain.

He was not only a person, but I came across to such hikers at least 5 during this hike.

When I came to the first peak called “Baenebong,” the president of AhToSan was waiting for me, and called for “Suzuki Time.”

[Suzuki Time at Baenebong,

I was happy to provide two boxes of fruits: grapes and melons, because my bag would be lighter after Suzuki Time.

[Gentiana scabra at Baenebong,

[At the summit of Baenebong,

The ridge trail from Baenebong to Ganwolsan was not steep, but gentle up and down. I could walk faster than usual.

I caught up with the ladies; Jaemi and Dallengi, whom I walked together at the last leg of Seolaksan one week before.

[Jaemi, Dallengi and Yoyu,

They are cheerful ladies and it was fun to talk with them.

Yoyu, a good hiker of AhToSan staff member was also with them.

So we walked together to Ganwolsan. They had a short break and their shared apples with me.

[Short break near Ganwolsan,

I reached at the summit of Ganwolsan first, and waited for the three hikers.

[At the summit of Ganwolsan,

I took some pictures at the monument of Ganwalsan, then we headed for Shinbulsan.

From the summit of Ganwalsan, we walked down to the Ganwalje, or Ganwal Pass, where there a big piles of stones.

[Around the summit of Ganwolsan,

[Around the summit of Ganwolsan,

While walking down toward Ganwolje, I notices several beautiful “Rindou(リンドウ竜胆)”flowers in Japanese.

[Gentiana scabra (or Japanese gentian),

[Wild flowers along the trail,

The name of this flower in Korean is Yongdam(용담竜胆) which means “Lever of Dragon”same as Japanese.

[Gentiana scabra (or Japanese gentian),

According to Wikipedia, its English name is Gentiana scabra (or Japanese gentian) and I like this flower very much.

However the main theme of this hike was to appreciate “silver grasses.” We saw many from Ganwolsan to Shinbulsan area.

[On the way to Ganwoljae,

I also noticed a new thing along the trail. It was a fossil of an ancient tree. It must have been there since millions of years ago. Although I passed this part of the mountain several times before, but I did not notice until they notified with new facilities.

[Fossil of an ancient tree,

[We came close to Ganwoljae,

When we arrived at Ganwolje, we found the top group of AhToSan having lunch just behind the big piles of stones.

[Ganwoljae Service Area,

So we joined them and had lunch there.

[The top group having lunch,

Those who were behind us, also joined us, but the top group members resumed their hiking.

There is a paved road passing through Ganwalje, so they built nice facilities of a service area, as well as a toilet facility.

[Wild flowers at Ganwoljae,

[Rest room at Ganwoljae,

There must be an event for mountain bike riders, because they were providing water and apples for bike riders there.

[Mountain bikers,

I resumed the hike with Jaemi, Dallengi and Yohu and began climbing Shinbulsan with them.

[Gaemi & Dallengi at Ganwoljae,

I could walk rather easily to the slope, and arrived at the top of the mountain with Yoyu, and we waited for the two ladies.

[Yoyu and Jaemi,

[Near the summit of Shinbulsan,

[Jaemi at Shinbulsan,

We arrived at the summit of Shinbulsan at 1:40. There was a new monument on the summit, and I tried to take nice pictures with the monument.

[At the summit of Shinbulsan,

While I was waiting for my turn to take pictures with the new monument, the middle group caught up with me.

[Gomdol at Shinbulsan,

So, I took several pictures with them, but while taking pictures, I lost the trace of the three hikers: Yoyu, Jaemi and Dalrengi.

[At the old monument,

They did not spend much time for taking pictures, and went ahead of me.

So, I joined the middle group and walked with them.

[On the way to Shinbuljae,

We had a rest at Shinbuljae, then began descending the mountain.

[At the wooden trail,

I saw several bike riders also descending the mountain using the same trail.

However, I was the fastest among the middle group, and I walked alone into the wood.

I must have a bad sense of direction, because I lost my way again.

I came to the river where there was no trail. I checked the map and saw the trail along the river.

[I lost my way in the valley,

So, I thought it would be all right to go down along the river.

My hunch was right. I came to the trail which went across the river.

So, I was relieved from my concern and went down to the exit.

Then I found the middle group of AhToSan having rest along the trail.

[I saw the middle group,

I happily joined them and took a short rest.

Then I began descending the mountain again.

I could walk faster than the rest of the group.

[The river near the exit,

When I came to the paved road, I waited for the other people.

I waited for more than 15 minutes, but only one hiker, “Diary of Autumn” came.

[“Diary of Autumn”,『

I gave up waiting for the others, and walked with “Diary of Autumn” to the final destination.

[Wild flowers at the parking lot,

I saw the members of the top group having “Kimchi-chige”and makgeolli at the table of a local market named “Daedong Mart”at 4:23.

[The top group having a wrap-up party,

I joined them and enjoyed the wrap-up party with them.

Then the middle group members, and the last group members, as well as those who took A course joined us.

[A group members joined us, Aグループの会員たちが下山した、A 그룹 회원들이 하산했다.]

[A course members at Yongchuksan, 靈鷲山山頂のAコース会員、영축산 정상의 A 코스 회원들]

[Wrap-up party all together,

We enjoyed the party until 5:30 pm, then our bus started toward Daejeon.

We came back to Daejeon at around 9 pm.

When I rode my bicycle and passed at the outdoor concert area, I saw many citizens enjoying a concert.

[A concert at South Gate in Daejeon,

A female singer looked like my old friend in Japan, was singing songs.

Then some people were following me, while calling my name. “Suzuki-sensei!” They were 5 of my students at the university.

[One of my students at the rainbow bridge,

I was happy to see them and we exchanged greeting.

There was the half-moon in the sky.

I really enjoyed every minute of this hike.

It was my 52nd hike for this year, and 328th AhToSan regular hike which I joined since Nov. 2004.

[A map for the hiking,

[Arriving at Baene Pass,

[Wild chrysanthemum,

[Cosmos,

[A group picture before the hike,

[The first part of the trail,

[Elsholtzia splendens Nakai,

[Gentiana scabra (or Japanese gentian),

[Around the summit of Ganwolsan,

[Gentiana scabra at Baenebong,

[At the summit of Baenebong,

[Jaemi,

[On the trail to Ganwolsan,

[Yoyu and Dallaengi,

[Around the summit of Ganwolsan,

[Around the summit of Ganwolsan,

[A butterfly on wild flowers,

[Fossil of an ancient tree,

[The explanation about "Permineralized wood"「

[At Ganwoljae,

[Ganwoljae Service Area,

[The top group having lunch,

[Rest room at Ganwoljae,

[Gaemi & Dallengi at Ganwoljae,

[Gomdol at Shinbulsan,

[At the summit of Shinbulsan,

[At the old monument,

[At Shinbuljae,

[At the wooden trail,

[I lost my way in the valley,

[The river near the exit,

[I arrived at the parking lot,

[Wild flowers at the parking lot,

[The top group having a wrap-up party,

[Short break on the way home,

[A concert at South Gate in Daejeon,

[Expo Rainbow Bridge,
