Mr. Sunata is one of my NTT college classmates. I happened to visit him while traveling in Hokuriku area about 3 years ago after the graduation in 1977.

We found each other as hiking lovers so we began to climb mountains together. It was our 2nd hike in Japan after climbing Mt. Myoko in June, 2013.

Mr. Sunata lives in Oyabe city, Toyama and I live in Kamakura, Kagawaga prefecture. We both bought Tohoku-Hokuriku Free Pass for “Otonano Kyujitsu Club” members.

He came to Aomori to visit one of his friends’ home previous day while I left Ofuna Station early in the morning of Sep. 30 and met at Sukayu Hot Spring, there the entrance of the trail to Hakkodasan located.

I took “Hayabusa” a special limited Shinkansen express to Shin-Aomori, leaving Tokyo at 6:32 am. This train you must reserve your seat beforehand, but I forgot to do so.

[Tohoku Shinkansen,

The conductor allocated my seat and luckily, I got a window seat. I like seeing Tohoku mountains from the windows of Shinkansen.

I arrived at Shin-Aomori at 9:50 and the bus to Sukayu left Shin-Aomori at 10:10. I arrived at around 11 am.

[Arriving at Shin-Aomori,

I bought 3 rice balls and a bottle of tea at the station, and the bus came while I was re-packing my bag, so I was in hurry and dropped my camera without noticing it. A stranger found it and came in the bus and asking the owner. Thanks to his kindness, my camera came back to me in one piece.

The bus stopped at a kind of “Kayano Chaya,” a kind of service area, before Sukayu. I bought a big size “rice-ball” and a chocolate and enjoyed together with a cup of tea, free of charge.

I arrived at Sukayu Bus Stop at 11:15, a bit late than the scheduled time, but my hiking pal was not arrived yet. He soon arrived with his friend in Aomori.

[Arriving at Sukayu,

Mr. Sunata, my hiking pal, happened to see Mr. Terashima on his private trip. They did not see each other in the past 13 years, and warmed up their friendship for this occasion.

Mr. Terashima gave “Nanbu Senbei” a traditional rice crackers and cans of coffee, not only to Mr. Sunata, but to me, too. He went back to Aomori and Mr. Sunata and I began hiking at 11:30.

[At the entrance of the trail,

We could see autumn colors even at the entrance of the trail. Soon after we began walking, we noticed the area without living plants. There must be volcanic hydrogen sulfide around there.

As we climbing the mountain, we felt heat and took off our outer clothes, but when we came to “Karesawa” area, it began to blow rather strong. So I put our outer clothes again.

Mr. Sunata seemed all right without outer clothes first, but the wind blew stronger and stronger as we climbed Ootake, so he also put outer clothes and I wore windbreaker on the outer clothes.

Then it began raining, and I felt pain in my face. It could be sleeting rain, and I regretted that I did not bring gloves with me. It was cold.

[At the trail to Oodake,

When we reached at the summit of Hakkoda Oodake, it rained hard with strong wind. We took pictures of each other in hurry, and began to descend the mountain in hurry, too.

[George at the summit of Ootake,

There was a shelter at the lower part of Oodake. We ran into the shelter. There were 3 couples ahead of us. One couple were in the sleeping bags. Other two couples were preparing for the bad weather, putting necessary rain gears on them. They left the shelter after while.

We also rested for about 20 minutes and them we prepared ourselves for the rain and began walking in the rain.

When we began walking, the weather began to turn for good. The strong wind soon subsided and it stopped raining while we were walking through “Kenashitai.” The autumn colors at Kenashitai were beautiful.

We walked carefully because the wet wooden trails were slippery. Anyway, we could come down to the bus stop safely before 4 pm.

The next bus was 4:43 pm, so we had time to have “soba” at the restaurant near the bus stop.

[At a noodle shop,

We arrived at Aomori at around 6 pm. The business hotel Mr. Sunata reserved for tus was only two blocks away from the station.

[Hotel Abest Aomori,

After checking in, we went out to the city and went to a restaurant “Hananomai” which Mr. Sunata had special discount ticket.

The name of the hotel was “Abest Aomori.” The regular charge for a night was 4000 yen. If you reserve by Internet, then 10000 yen discount and charge was 3000yen.

[At Hotel Abest Aomori,

Since Mr. Sunata had service points of 1000 yen and he kindly used it evenly for me, too. So, I paid 2500 yen for a night.

[At Restaurant "Hananomai" 『

The hotel gave us 1000 yen worth coupon for each of us. We used the coupon at the local shop next day. So, the hotel charge for each of us was 1500 yen! (If you did not use the coupon, it was 2500 yen.)

I was really amazed how economical way Mr. Sunata travels. He must be generous for traveling economically.

[At Sendai Station,

[Time table for "Mizuumigo"

[With Mr. Sunata,

[At Yakushi Shrine near the bus stop,

[Mr. Sunata at Sennintai,

[At the shelter of Oodake,

[At Hotel Abest Aomori,

[At Restaurant "Hananomai" 『
