110103 Mt.

Date: January 3 (Mon) Cloudy, Snow on the mountain

Place: Mt. Haguro (414m) Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture

Course: Entrance of Mt. Haguro (Zuishin Gate) – Five Story Pagoda (National Treasure) – Fire Stone – Bashozuka – Observation Teahouse – Hagurosan Shrine – Bus Stop (about 4 km, 2 hours)

Partner: None

Susumu, my brother-in-law drove me to the entrance of Mt. Haguro. There were much snow even at the entrance.

[My brother-in-law drove me to the entrance,

I went through Zuishin Gate. It was the downslope and slippery. All stairs were covered by snow.

[The Zuishin Gate,

There was a red curved bridge. Across the brige, there were several statues of Fudo Myo-Oh, or Cetaka. A set of three statues are White Dragon, Blue Dragon and Black Dragon. Some people offered sake named “Hatsumago.”

After the bridge, all trails were uphill. It was a bit difficult to walk without climbing irons. A father and a daughter were following after me. They wore sneakers. When I looked back at the 2nd slope, they were out of my sight.

There are hundreds of Japanese cedars which are over 300 years old. Among them, “Jijii sugi” or “Grandpa Cedar” is over 1000 years old and was designated as a natural monument.

[A thousand year old "Granpa Cedar",

There is also a beautiful wooden five story pagoda which was built about 700 years ago. The pagoda was designated as national treasure. It was snow covered just correctly and it did look beautiful.

I arrived at the shine at 11:30 a.m. There were many people who came to offer New Year prayers there. Most of them drove to the shrine or used bus service. I also used the bus service to go back to Tsuruoka.

[The shrine was covered with snow,

On my way to Tsuruoka, I dropped at Spa called “Yupoka.” I enjoyed the open-air spa there, as well as watiching Hakone Ekiden on TV.

[At the spa called "Yuboka"

It was my first hike for the year 2011.

101227-30 Busan and Daejeon with Kikko(釜山および大田)

101227-30 Busan and Daejeon with Kikko

After the package tour to Gyongju, we met Mr. Koh who visited Japan 2 years ago. When he came to Japan with his friend, “Bunggyong” I guided them around Kamakura and Hakone in December 2008..

Mr. Koh used to be a famous detective of Busan Police Station. When he retired from the office, one of his friends, “Punggyong” treated him for “Trip to Japan.” Punggyong is one of my old AhToSan friends.

Mr. Koh took us to a gorgeous Japanese restaurant named “Ginza” at GwangAnRi Beach in Busan. GwangAnRi Beach is famous for its beautiful beach and illuminated bridge named “GwangAn Bridge.”

[We could see the GwangAn Bridge through the window,

We were surprised to see the luxurious sashimi dishes such as “gilded toro” or genuine grated “wasabi.”

[Gilded "toro"、

Mr. Koh originally came from Jejudo and he is the 2nd boy of 10 kids (2 boys and 8 girls.) He is the 2nd from the last one so he has 7 elder sisters. (I had 5 elder sisters.)

Mr. Koh also surprised us with his beautiful voice. He said he had became to know Jo Yongpil before he became a super-hero. Therefore he sang Jo Yongpil’s songs well at karaoke after the party.

[Mr. Koh sang Jo Yongpil's song、

He said he would publish his autobiography entitled “A river flowing in his mother’s heart.” We look forward to reading his book in spring of 2011.

We went back to Daejeon by KTX next day since I had to give term-end examinations to my students.

My studio apartment is too small to accommodate my wife, so I reserved a hotel room in Yusong. An AhToSan member who also visited our home in 2008, “Katarina” reserved better room of Hotel Reviera for us, so I cancelled the room I had reserved.

Katarina treated us not only hotel room, but also a wonderful dinner at the hotel. She was supposed to join us for dinner, but due to heavy snow, she could not make it. In stead, she invited us to her condominium for lunch on Dec. 30, before we leave Daejeon.

[Katarina invited us for lunch,

We also had an invitation for lunch by another AhToSan friend who also visited us in Japan in 2008. Her nickname was “Ddulchanmi” which means “Wild Rose.”

She was single when they visited us in the summer of 2008. She got married and now she lives near my apartment with her husband and 81-day old daughter.

We were also invited to a dinner on Dec. 29 by AhToSan executives. “Punggyon” arranged the party and invited us to the dinner with the current president of AhToSan, the founder of the club, and former president of the club as well.

[With AhToSan executives,

We also visited “Stammtisch” after the dinner with AhToSan executives. Stammtisch is an informal weekly gathering of foreigners where Engish speaking people go together every Wednesday.

[We also visited Stammtish meeting,

I am very happy to introduce my wife to many friends here in Daejeon. Katarina kindly drove us to the bus station next day. We went back to Japan together from Korea for the first time for the last 8 years.

[Epilogue]

My wife helped me to check test papers, as well as being a supervisor for my college job. She also cleaned my studio apartment, so I am very grateful for her.

[We could see the GwangAn Bridge through the window,

[Mr. Koh treated us with a gorgeous sashimi dishes,

[Sashimi of live octopus,

[Katarina invited us for lunch,

[With AhToSan executives,

[We also visited Stammtish meeting,

101227 Gyongju(Bulkuksa/ Seokguram/Ceonmachong/Anapji)

Dec. 27 (Mon) Fine. We joined a package tour to Gyongju by a microbus that day. They came to our hotel at 8:45 in the morning. The guide is Ms. Kim who speaks Japanese well.

We left Busan at 9 a.m. after picking up some Japanese tourists at Hotel Westing. About 10 Japanese including us, joined this tour. First, we headed for Bulkuksa Temple.

This temple is one of the most famous sightseeing spots in Gyongju. I visited here several times before, but it was my first time to be with Japanese speaking guide.

[In front of Bulkuksa Temple,

It was really an eye-opening tour because the guide explained many important spots. Now if I came again with my friends, I could explain to them, either in English, or in Japanese.

[The pond at Bulkuksa Temple was completely frozen,

After Bulkuksa temple, we visited Seokguram which had been made in 750 AD. The stone curved Buddha is really beautiful and it has been designated as a world heritage, together with Bulkuksa, since 1995.

We headed for a restaurant named “Sambo Ssampap” for lunch. The restaurant looked like a museum exhibiting various items like old coins and bills and musical instruments.

[A museum like restaurant,

We went to “Daeneungwon” a kind of “Tumb Park” where there was “Chonmachong”a tumb of royal family members. Chonmachong is open for the public and it was my 3rd visit of this tumb.

[Chonmachong at Daeneungwon,

After visiting “Chonmachong” we visited “Anapji.” Anapji is a name of man-made pond which was made in the court of Shilla Dynasty (57 BC – 935 AD.)

[Anapji、

We also visited Gyongju Ppang (Korean traditional cake) Bakery and Bopju Brewery during the tour.

[Traditional Bopju Brewery,

The tour costs 120,000 won/person including the gorgeous lunch. We came back to the hotel at 5 p.m.

[At Bulkuksa Temple,

[In front of Seokguram,

[A museum like restaurant,

[Chonmachong at Daeneungwon,

[Anapji、
