Hiking Date: May 17 (Fri) 2013, Fine

Destination (mountain): GuRyongSan, Daejeon

Hiking course: Parking Lot – HyonAmSa Temple – GuRyongSan (A round trip)

Partner: George Furst, Eric, Ayla

Buddha’s birthday is being celebrated by Buddhests all over the world. But the date differs from country to country.

In Japan, it is called “KanButsue” and celebrated on April 8 of Solar Calendar and in Korea, it is April 8 of Lunar Calendar. It was May 17 this year.

In Korea, the birthdays of Jesus and Buddha are national holidays. So, I proposed Taejeonhikers to go hiking that day.

George Furst agreed to offer the rides and besides me, Eric and Ayla agreed to join us.

We met at 10 am at KAIST and George drove us to Lake Daecheong. Ayla sat next to George and she helped him to find the temple called “HyonAmSa.”

She did a good job and we found a parking space just next to the entrance of the trail to Mt. Guryong. (GuRyongSan).

[A group picture before the hike,

It was only 500 meters from the parking lot to the temple. But it was very steep stairs and trail.

[Silverberry or oleaster,

HyonAmSa Temple was very crowded because of the special event. Many Buddhists came to the temple. People who could not get into the temple, were sitting outside on the plastic sheets on the earth.

[We soon arrived at the tempke,

They were chanting Buddhist sutra together with priests inside of the building.

[There were many people at the temple,

There were several volunteer workers at the temple kitchen that day. They cook a lot of “Bibingpap”and served them to the visitors.

[Volunteers were helping to supply "Bibingpap",

We saw such people eating “bibingpap” along the trail.

Then we went to a tall “tap”or pagoda made of concrete next to the temple. Some people were walking around the “tap” and some were bowing to it.

[Leaving the temple to the tap,

It was an observatory space and we could see nice scenery of Daecheong Dam very well.

[We headed for the ridge,

Then again a bit steep slop, we walked for about half an hour. We came to the ridge.

[DaeCheong Dam from the trail,

We ate our lunch at one of several “cairns”made of stones. Then we headed for the top of the mountain.

[There were several "cairns" on the ridge,

[We ate lunch in front of a Cairn,

The ridge walk was only for 30 minutes, and then we arrived at the top of the mountain.

[Eric on the top of Mt. Guryong,

[A group picture on the top,

There were three wooden jangseungs or Korean traditional totem poles and a black dragon and a small stone on which the name of the mountain was written.

[A Jangseung and Daecheong Dam,

There was a small hole on the top part of a jangseung, and a small bird flew to the hole having a worm in her beaks.

[A bird with an worm,

[A bird's next on Jangseung,

I found some butterflies flying around on the top of the mountain.

[Tiger Swallowtail、

After having a short rest on the top of the mountain, we went down from the mountain to the parking lot.

[George and Ayla on their down trail,

It took us for 2 hours to climb and only one hour to go down.

[Volunteer workers washing dishes at the temple,

[Hydrangea at the temple,

It was only 3 hour-hike, but it was really appropriate for me, because I was going to participate “Over-30 kilometers Big Hike on Mt. Jiri”next day.

I regarded it as a light warming-up hike for the big hike of Mt. Jiri next day.

However it was my 23rd hike for the year of 2013.

[We parked near the entrance of the trail,

[George, picking up his bag from his trunk,

[Silverberry or oleaster,

[DaeCheong Dam from the temple,

[Volunteers were helping to supply "Bibingpap",

[The cement pagoda,

[Short break on the way, 途中で一休み、도중에 휴식]

[Cairn (man-made pile of stones) on the ridge,

Hiking Date: May 11, 2013(Sat) Fine

Destination (mountain): 黄梅山(황매산1,108m), Sancheong/Hapcheon, Gyongnam Province

Hiking course: Jangbangni – 960 Peak – Mt. Hwangmae – Altar of Hwangmaesan – Beteulbong – Mosanjae – Sungyol Rock – YongAmSa – Parking Lot

Partner: 26 AhToSan members

[A map of HwangMaeSan,

Since the destination was far from Daejeon, we left South Gate Parking Lot at 6 am. I got up at 3:50 and prepared for the hike and went to the bus stop by bicycle.

[The guide-map of trails in HwangMaeSan,

We arrived at Jangbangni at 8:45 and began hiking by climbing to the hill by the road.

I was the last hiker to follow other members. Ruchi, a researcher at ETRI, and the planner of this hike, and Gaduk kept accompany with me.

Soon after we began hiking, I noticed many flowers such as Iris rossii Baker、Solomon´s seal、Osmunda、 Lily of the valley, etc.

[Solomon´s seal、

We had “Suzuki Time” after we began walking for 40 minutes while the midlle group members were waiting for me.

At this point, some members with nice cameras, were taking pictures of fawn lilies. I like this flower, but I found the “yellow” Iris rossii Baker!!!

[Erythronium (fawn lily, trout lily, dog's-tooth violet, adder's tongue)、

["Yellow" Iris rossii Baker、

I saw many Iris rossii Baker this spring or any other springs, but they were all dark blue or purple, not yellow. I saw “Yellow” Iris rossii Baker only once three years ago at Gyeryongsan. Since then, I never saw yellow Iris rossii Baker.

According to “Pianoman” ordinary Iris rossii Baker are called “Gaksibukkot각시붓꽃” and yellow on is “Geumbukkot금붓꽃.” “Pianoman” is a great fan of flowers and he keeps a picture of “Geumbukko” in his smartphone.

So I am very much excited and happy to find this flower.

[Violet with dark blue,

[Yellow violets,

When we came to the ridge, there were full of azaleas that day. They were all in full bloom.

I saw other “yellow” flowers, such as violet and “Potentilla fragarioides” or “kijimusiro” in Japanese.

The name of the mountain is “HwangMaeSan” which means Yellow “Ume” Mountain.

“Ume” is a Japanese word, and in Korean, “Maeha” blossoms.

Anyhow, I became to like this mountain very much.

[The ridges of HwangMaeSan,

[At the ridges of HwangMaeSan,

[Azalea flowers on HwangMaeSan,

We arrived at the top of this mountain at 10:40 am. There were many hikers around the stone monument, but I managed to take some pictures with this monument. Then I went on the ridge hiking.

[A stone monument of HwangMaeSan,

[With AhToSan members near the top,

The trails from the top of the mountain to the Altar of Hwangmaesan were well facilitated with wooden stairs. It was wide enough to go both way at the same time.

[The ridge of azaleas,

Ruchi and Gaduk accompanied with me until the end of this wooden trail where the people of main group of AhToSan were having lunch near the altar.

[I joined the middle group for lunch,

This time, I made toast sandwitches using Australian“vegemite”for my lunch. I also brought Japanese beers such as Kirin and Asahi and shared with other members.

[A group picture after the lunch,

We took group pictures after lunch and resumed the hike. We saw some “castle” and “beacon mound” used for movie-shooting.

[In front of the fortress figure used for movie shooting,

Then I found many “Gentiana thunbergii” or “haru-rindo” in Japanese. They are tiny “rindo" and very cute.

The azaleas on Beteulbong were also beautiful and pleny. And so were the people who came to appreciate the flowers.

[Azalea flowers near Beteulbong,

So, I lost AhToSan people and began walking along. There was a ice-candy vender on the mountain. It cost only 1000 won (less than 1 doller) and tasted very cold and nice.

Then I saw “Pianoman” waiting for others. Other AhToSan hikers caught up with me and went ahead of me from this point.

The last part of the hike was very rocky and we could enjoy nice views. We could see not only azaleas, but also “sancheolchuk” or “royal azalea” as well.

[AhToSan members behind royal azalea,

This part of the mountain reminded me of “Bukkansan” in Seoul. I saw “Geumgang” and Ruchi again.

On the way down to the parking lot, a woman was selling “Sambaekcho(三白草)” or “ Lizard's tail” which is a family of “Dokudami(ドクダミ)” in Japanese.

[A woman selling "Sambaekcho" or "Lizard's tail" drink,

["Sambaekcho" or "Lizard's tail",

The explanation why it is called "Sambaekcho" or "Three White Grass" and the effect of drinking its essence were written on the wooden board, but most of all, it tasted cool and very good.

[Cooling feet in a brook,

We arrived at the parking lot of YongAmSa Temple. It was a kind of market. There were many shops there. To my surprise, one of these shops were selling “Narazuke.”

[Many local people selling their products.

“Narazuke(奈良漬)” is a pickles famous in Nara in Japan. And the man who was selling this food told me “This is Narazuke!”

[Some were selling "Narazuke",

I bought the smallest piece of Narazuke by 3000 won. They did taste like Narazuke.

It was 2:40 when I arrived at the AhToSan bus. So it was just 6 hours hike.

We had main dish of “acorn jello” and makgeolli for drinks. We finished the wrap-up party at 3:30 and came back to Daejeon at 6:30.

[Main dish was "acorn jello",

It was my 21st hike for this year and 313th AhToSan regular hike for me.

[The guide-map of trails in HwangMaeSan,

[Osmunda (Japanese royal fern or Jap]anese flowering fern),

[The ridges of HwangMaeSan,

[The ridges of HwangMaeSan,

[Yellow violets,

[At the top of HwangMaeSan,

[I joined the middle group for lunch,

[A group picture after the lunch,

[The ridge of azaleas,

[At Beacon Mound、

[The fortress figure used for movie shooting,

[Azalea flowers near Beteulbong,

[Cooling feet in a brook,

[Many local people selling their products.

[Main dish was "acorn jello",

["Dotorimuk" or "Acorn jello" 、「
