DR #197 “A Present on Teachers’ Day”

I have been teaching “Technical Japanese” at Daedeok College for 7 years. As I wrote in the previous report, this is going to be my last year, so this is my last “First Semester.”

Since Korea enforce conscription system for men over 19 years old, almost all male students, take a leave of absence for at least 2 years for military service, then come back to the college.

One of such students came back to campus this spring, as a sophomore, and asked me to teach how to play the mandolin.

He asked me before to obtain a textbook for mandolin when he was a freshman. So I bought one in Japan and present it to him.

Now he asked me how to play the musical instrument. Actually, he bought a mandolin and began learning to play it by himself.

I do have a mandolin, but I have not played it for a long time, so I hesitated to teach him. But since he already bought it, so I decided to teach him in the middle of this semester.

I used to use a tuning whistle to tune the mandolin. But he has a better instrument for tuning. You can check the tone of strings visually like a metronome.

I obtained the instrument, and we began playing together according to Odell Method Mandolin Textbook.

I like this new instrument for tuning and I began to learn new songs by playing my mandolin if the musical scores are available. Thus I am practicing “Aegukga" ("Patriotic Song"), the national anthem of South Korea and “Mo Li Hua”a Chinese folk song.

Meanwhile, May 15 is “Seuseungwinal스승의 날” or “Teachers’Day.” This student came to me with a present for me.

It is a coffee mug with a picture of me printed on the side of the mug together with a sentence describing his gratitude with 3 other former students of mine.(To tell you the truth, the picture reminded me of a picture of General MacArthur.It looked like an old man.^^;)

In my earlier carriers, I had the experience when students brought some presents to me, but I turned down, because they were my present students. I was afraid of the influence to their mark then. But this time, they are not my present students. So I accepted their gift with my sincere gratitude.

I am very happy to be their former Japanese teacher.

2007年から7年間勤めた大徳大学の精密機械システム科。この科が現在の3年生を最後になくなるため、来年から私の教えている「技術日本語」の科目がなくなる予定だ。したがって、今年の1学期が私の担当する最後の1学期になる。

大徳大学は3年制で卒業生は短期大学ではなく普通大学の卒業資格になる。韓国は徴兵制なので、男子は通常、大学1年が終わると入隊し、2年間の軍務を終えると復学するケースが多い。

復学した学生の一人がこの春、私にマンドリンの演奏の指導を依頼してきた。

私は韓国へマンドリンを持参してきたが、長らく弦を張りっぱなしにしていたこともあり、４つの音程がフラットを押すと合わなくなっていた。

そのため、マンドリンをふたたび弾くことをためらったが、その学生はバイオリンの経験があり、4弦のチューニングはバイオリンと同じということもあり、独学でマンドリンを弾くことができた。

以前、この学生の求めに応じてマンドリンの教則本を日本で購入し彼にプレゼントした。

そのこともあったので、教則本にもとずくマンドリン指導を引き受けた。

一学期の後半、週一度、月曜日の午後の授業の時、授業開始1時間前に教室に行って、約30分、指導した。

指導方法は教則本に従って、学生が練習者のパート、私が、それに合わせたパートを弾き、合奏した。

学生はメトロノームのように弦の音を合わせる器具を持っており、私も同様な器具を彼に頼んで購入した。

これはマンドリンのネックに取り付けて弦を弾くと自動的にその弦の数値がでるもので、聴覚に頼るよりも確実にチューニングができる。

彼のおかげで私もマンドリンに触れる機会が増え、楽譜を見ながら未知の歌を覚える楽しみを思い出した。

このようにして、韓国語の「愛国歌」や中国語の「モリファ(茉莉花)」という歌を練習しているところである。

さて、韓国には5月に「師匠の日」という記念日がある。これは先生に対して感謝を表す日で、日本にはない。

以前、私が担当している学生数名が私にプレゼントをしようとしたことがあるが、私は素直に受け取らず、断った。

今回は直接担当している学生ではない学生が、おなじく担当していない学生と共同で私に特製のコーヒーカップをプレゼントしてくれた。

このコーヒーマグには私の似顔絵と私に対す感謝の言葉がプリントしてあった。

似顔絵を観た私の正直な感想は「マッカーサー将軍のようだな」であるが、おそらく生涯で初めて、そして最後の「師匠の日」の贈り物としてありがたくいだだくことにした。

私のマンドリンの弟子は「イー・ギルハク」、賛同者3名は「キム・デホ」「パク・キュテ」「チェ・サンファン」である。みんな、ありがとう。諸君のこれからの人生の成功を祈る。
