When I heard “Blue Mountains” for the 1st time, I thought it would be mountains which color was blue.
When I visited for the mountains (some decades ago,) it was “Echo Point” and it was an observation deck from which I could see magnificent view of canyon, and it was NOT a mountain at all.
Blue Mountains National Park is 2,680㎢ and more than Kanagawa Prefecture (2,416 ㎢). Most of the area is high plateau of 1,000 meters or a bit higher.
The train line called Blue Mountains Line goes to the area from Central Station in Sydney to Lithgow (about 127 km toward West.) Most of the stations I go for trekking are: Glenbrook, Wentworth Falls, Leura, Katoomba and Blackheath.
The trains from Sydney go to Penrith, the edge of Greater Sydney City, then go across Nepean River and reach at the edge of Blue Mountains, Emu Plain.
From Emu Plain the trains go to the elevation of the plateau, the entrance of Blue Mountains called Glenbrook (the altitude of 200m).
The trains go higher and higher, and when they arrive at Wentworth Falls, the elevation reaches 860m, Leura, 990m and Katoomba, 1030m, and Blackheath 1,050m.
It takes about 2 hours from Central to Katoomba which is regarded as the base town of Blue Mountains. The distance between Central and Katoomba is 85 km and regular fare is 15 Australian dollars (about 1200 yen) one way.
I am benefitted using Senior Opal Card, which limits single day fare up to 2.5 A$ (about 200 yen) whatever I use.
They run Blue Mountains trains at least one in every hour. These trains are 4-carriage trains or 8-carriage trains.
One thing you must remember is that there are “quiet carriages” and non-quiet carriages.
The 1st and 4th carriages are “quiet carriages”( as 5th and 8th too in case of 8-carriage trains.)
If you get into the quiet carriage, you are not supposed to talk with your friends, and you are not supposed to use cell-phone for talking.
If you get on non-quiet carriage, you are free to enjoy conversations with your friends, or even using cell-phone for talking.
I go to Blue Mountains with my Korean friends at least twice a week. On Tuesday, I join Blue Mountains Club and we usually go to Wentworth Falls.
On Saturday, I join another hiking group called “Saturday Hiking Group.” Mostly we go to Leura and walk through Leura Forest and go to Katoomba.
April is the month of school holidays and you may call it autumn vacation. Most of culture activities I am taking are closed during the holiday season. So, I have extra days to spend for additional bush walking.
I went to Blackheath where I visited 3 times last year. Blackheath is two stations far from Katoomba, so my Korean friends usually do not go.
I visited Blackheath last October for the first time. They hold Rhododendron Festival in the 1st weekend of November every year. So, I visited there again with my wife and her friends in November.
Later, I happened to meet a Japanese couple who were visiting Blackheath, not for flower viewing, but for viewing magnificent canyons there.
Therefore, I made up my mind to visit again for bush-walking alone in April.
Here are the information about two trekking courses:
1) Destination: Govetts Leap
Trekking Course: Blackheath Station –> Popes Glen Track –> Govetts Leap -> Govetts Leap Road – Blackheath Station: 8 km, 2.5 hours
There are two courses to reach “Govetts Leap.” An easier way is to walk “Govetts Leap Road” which starts from the train station to the lookout of “Govetts Leap.”
When you get off at the station, then walk back the street toward Katoomba direction. If you walk back for about100 meters, then you come to the intersection and a big sign says “Govetts Leap” pointing to left.
If you walk along the paved road for about 30 – 40 minutes, you will reach at “Govetts Leap.”
If you prefer bush-walk, then turn to left again when you see the sign “To Popes Glen Track.”
This track leads you through Memorial Park. The tack goes along a creek and not many hikers I saw. The whole distance is about 4 km, and you can reach the leap within an hour.
I personally recommend to go “Popes Glen Track” first, then use the paved road “Govetts Leap Road” for returning to the station. It may take you for about 40 minutes.
2) Destination: Pulpit Rock
Trekking Course: Blackheath Station –> Govetts Leap Road –> Govetts Leap –> Pulpit Rock Track –> Pulpit Rock –> Hat Hill Road – Blackheath Station: 14 km, 3.5 hours
If you want to visit Pulpit Rock, it takes another 3.5 km from Govetts Leap, but this walk is wonderful. You can enjoy the magnificent views of “Grand Canyon” while walking toward Pulpit Rock.
You can see waterfalls running down from the cliff.
And Pulpit Rock is wonderful. It looks like “Pulpit” in a church. It is connected to the cliff, like the famous Three Sisters with Honeymoon Bridge. You can feel the sheer depth of cliff. Then you can walk toward the parking lot of Pulpit Rock.
The parking lot and the access road from Hat Hill Road were not paved as of April, 20, 2019. But you can drive from Blackleath Station easily. I walked for about 6 km and it took 1.5 hours from the parking lot to the station.
It was a nice walk of autumn in Blue Mountains.
According to i-phone healthcare application, the walking distance of the day; 18.7 km, 29,018 steps and equivalence of 41 story building.

SR #17号 ブルーマウンテンズ・ブラックヒース(Blackheath)のブッシュウォーク[ゴヴェッツリープ(Govetts Leap)とパルピットロック(Pulpit Rock)]
目的地：ブラックヒース(Blackheat)のゴヴェッツリープ(Govetts Leap)とパルピットロック(Pulpit Rock)
私が「ブルーマウンテンズ」と初めて聞いた時、きっと青い山々なんだろうと思った。昔懐かしい「青い山脈」の歌を思った。
もう10年以上まえになるが、初めてブルーマウンテンズを訪れたとき、そこはブルーマウンテンズの最大の観光地「エコ・ポイント」でスリーシスターズを望む展望台だった。
そこから見えるブルーマウンテンズは山脈ではなく、アメリカのグランドキャニヨンのような渓谷だった。
ブルーマウンテンズ国立公園の面積は2,680平方キロメートルで神奈川県より広い(神奈川県は2416平方キロメートル)。
シドニーの西方に位置し、セントラル駅からリスゴウまでブルーマウンテンズ線が伸びている。ブルーマウンテンズの中心の街であるカトゥンバ駅まで85キロメートルだが約2時間かかる。
列車はすべてダブルデッカーで4両または8両編成。セントラルからカトゥンバまでの運賃は片道15オーストラリアドル(約1200円)だが、65歳以上の市民が使うオパールカード(鉄道・バス・フェリーなど共用の乗車カード)を使うと1日の限度額が2.5ドル(約200円)でそれ以上はすべて無料扱いとなる。
ブルーマウンテンズ列車は1時間に1本程度の運行だが、注意すべきは「静かにする車両(Quiet Carriage)」の存在である。1両目と4両目(8両編成の場合は5両目と8両目も)は「静かにする車両」で、この車両に乗った場合は、ケータイの通話はもちろん、通常のおしゃべりも禁止である。話をしたい場合は他の車両へ移動しなければいけないことである。
私は基本的に、週2回ブルーマウンテンズにトレッキングに行く。毎週火曜日は韓国人の登山グループ「青山会」の人々と一緒にウェントワースフォールズへ行き、トレッキングを楽しむ。
また、毎週土曜日はこれも韓国人の登山グループである「土曜登山会」の人々と、主にカトゥンバやルーラへ行き、ともにトレッキングを楽しむ。
さて、4月はこちらではスクールホリディの月で、学校が休みになる。いわば「秋休み」である。私が参加している文化活動もこの月は休講となる。
そこで、普段は行くことが難しいブルーマウンテンズの他の地域、とくにカトゥンバより遠方のブラックヒースに行くことにした。
ここはかなり有名な「シャクナゲ園」があり、その季節に2回訪問した。その後、ブルーマウンテンズ列車内で偶然に会った日本人夫妻が、ブラックヒースへシャクナゲではなく、景色を見に行くというので、私も1度一人で行ってみた。
観光スポットは「ゴブレットリープ」という展望台で、場所は「エコポイント」に比べれは小規模だが、そこかれ見える景観は素晴らしかった。
4月に再訪したときは、さらにそこから断崖の上を3.5kmつづく、「パルピットロック・トラック」を進んだもう一か所の絶景スポット「パルピットロック」へ行ってみた。
これら2か所の観光スポットを訪ねるコースを紹介する。
コース1：目的地「ゴヴェッツリープ(Govetts Leap)」
トレッキングコース：ブラックヒース駅(Blackheath Station)～ポウプス・グレン・トラック(Popes Glen Track)～ゴヴェッツリープ(Govetts Leap)～ブラックヒース駅：8km:2.5時間) [ブラックヒース駅からゴヴェッツリープ(Govetts Leep)へ]
私は車を持たないので、常に公共交通機関を使う。ブラックヒース駅からゴヴェッツリープへ行くにはゴブレッツリープロード(舗装道路)を歩くか、ポウプス・グレン・トラックを歩いてブッシュウォークするかの二通りある。
前者だと片道約3kmで美しい街並みが見学できる。ブッシュウォークだと約4kmでクリークに沿った快適なトラックである。どちらも標識がはっきりしていてわかりやすい。
ブッシュウォークの場合、目的地のゴヴェッツリープの手前に分岐点があり、小川を渡って岩のとっかかりを登れば、パルピットロックへ続くパルピットロック・トラックになる。
ゴヴェッツリープまでは車によるアクセスも容易で、駐車場も整備されている。実際、車で来る観光客も多い。ここの展望台からの展望は、カトゥンバのエコーポイントからのスリーシズターズの展望に劣らず素晴らしい。
ブラックヒース駅からポウプス・グレン・トラックを通ってゴヴェッツリープに行く場合、ゴヴェッツリープロードを歩いてブラックヒースにもどってもよいサーキットとなる。この場合、所要時間はブッシュウォークが1.5時間、街歩きが40分ほどなので、見学時間を含め2.5時間で十分に楽しめる。
コース2：目的地「パルピットロック(Pulpit Rock)」
トレッキングコース：ブラックヒース駅～ゴヴェッツリープ・ロード(Govetts Leap Road)～パルピットロック・トラック(Pulpit Rock Track)～パルピットロック(Pulpit Rock)～ハットヒル・ロード(Hat Hill Road)～ブラックヒース駅(約14km:3.5時間)

私はブラックヒース駅から街歩きコースでゴヴェッツリープに到着。ここから標識の示す方向に下り、前述した分岐点に出た。クリークを渡って、岩のとっかかりを上ると断崖に沿って、快適なブッシュウォークができる。
このトラックがパルピットロック・トラックである。前方に特異な岩の突起(パルピットロック)が見え、そちらを目指し、一本道を歩いた。
時折、ゴヴェッツリープのほうを振り返ると断崖に一筋の滝が見える。滝の名はホースシュー・フォールズ[Horseshoe Falls:馬蹄滝]だ。
渓谷の景観も素晴らしく、断崖に沿ってでたり引っ込んだりの道を3.5kmほど進むと開けた岩場に出る。ここがパルピットロックである。
パルピットとは教会の説教台という意味で、岩の形が絶壁から突き出ていてそのように見えるということらしい。
この岩の縁には防護柵があり、階段もしっかりできているので落下することはまずない。軽装の家族連れの観光客も多いのは、車でもアクセスできるからだ。
ただし、アクセス道路や駐車場は未舗装で他の観光スポットに比べるとまだ整備が進む余地がありそうだ。
ここからブラックヒース駅に戻るには来た道をもどるか、ハットヒル・ロード(Hat Hill Road)をブラックヒース駅に向かって歩けばよい。
私はハットヒル・ロードを歩いてブラックヒース駅に13時過ぎに戻り、13:30発の列車に乗ったので、この日は約3.5時間のウォークとなった。ちなみにこの日の総歩行距離は18.7km、歩数は29,000歩、階段は41階だった。
(歩行距離には家からチャッツウッド駅までの往復やセントラル駅などの歩行を含む。)
レンタカーなどで行く場合、コブレッツリープまでは舗装道路で駐車場も完備して容易にアクセスできる。
またそこからパルピットロックへの道も最後のアクセスと駐車場は2019年4月20日現在で未舗装であるがさほど困難ではない。ただし、駐車場から観光ポイントまでの400mは歩くことになる。
私はブラックヒースからの一筆書きで歩き、秋のブルーマウンテンズを満喫した。
一日の歩行距離は地元のチャッツウッド駅へのアクセスを含め18.7km、歩数は29,018歩、階段は41階相当であった。
