“Wentworth Falls and Our Granddaughter’s Birthday Party on Feb. 2nd, 2023 ”
My wife and I have come to Sydney on January 30th. We came from winter to summer.
I reached out to my friends in Sydney and got some disappointing news. A few weeks ago, Isaac, who I hiked with the most in Sydney, fell while trekking alone and was badly injured.
At the time of the fall, he was unable to use his smartphone because he was unable to move. Fortunately, some hikers happened to find him and he was carried to a hospital by helicopter. He has been hospitalized for a week and is currently recuperating at home.
With the exception of Isaac, the group gathered as before, got off at Wentworth Falls Station, and walked the scenic trails. My favorite part of Wentforth Falls is the Charles Darwin Walk, which connects the train station to the multi-tiered waterfall, but this wonderful walk has been closed for several years for upgrades.
We took a detour and walked the road to the Wentworth Falls Lookout and from there we walked the trekking trails.
Following the 'Undercliff Track' along the edge of the cliff, we continued to walk toward Conservation Hut through the Over-cliff Track
When we looked at the valley below from the observatory, we could see traces of landslides here and there. According to what I hear, there was a tragic accident last year in which an English family who were visiting the Blue Mountains for sightseeing were killed in the accident.

Isaac's accident was a tragedy in which he was transported by helicopter and was hospitalized, but it is fortunate that he is currently undergoing rehabilitation.
We ate lunch at the gazebo of Conservation Hut, and I hurried home after saying goodbye to my second daughter's 21st birthday celebration at my son's house in Chatswood that evening.
Our son’ eldest daughter got married in Darling Harbor last year, and she and her husband attended her sister's birthday party. My son's eldest son is 16 years old and is currently in the second grade of high school, and her third daughter is 8 years old and is in the third grade of elementary school.
The walking distance on that day was 16.5 km, the number of steps was 23,352, and the stairs were equivalent to 30 floors.

Transportation services are being operated by NSW government. Comparing the services in Japan, there are pros and cons I noticed. Good news is the fare is quite low. Bad news is it sometime causes big confusions. They frequently stop the service and do repair works during the daytime, even at the weekends. (They offer free alternative bus services, though they often cause confusion.)
On this day, the Blue Mountain Line was suspended, so I changed my trekking direction and walked the 1st and 2nd sections of The Great North Walk.
The starting point of the first section is the obelisk at Macquarie Place in Sydney. It was a clear day with no clouds, but the Opera House was backlit from the ferry.
Passing under the Harbor Bridge through the side of the cruise ship ISLAND PRINCESS that has been anchored for a few days. I landed at Woolwich Wharf after a comfortable voyage of less than half an hour.
I looked down at the Woolwich Deck and then followed the bougainvillea-filled hillside into the first bush, Kelly's Bush. After passing through here, following the signposts along the maze-like course along the Lane Cove River, I came to Boronia Park, the end point of the first section. I ate lunch on a picnic bench in a quiet park.
The second section starts from Boronia Park and follows the course along the banks of the Lane Cove River upstream. This course is comfortable on the log-boarded track maintained in the thick mangroves.
I had a short break at Buffalo Creek Park. After that, I passed a group of more than 20 trekkers. It was a Chinese group of men and women of all ages.
The trail continues through the mangroves and ends at Magdala Park for the second leg. I arrived at Mowbrow Park, where the bus stop is located, at 2:30 pm, but I didn't have the energy to walk the third section.
I got home at the share house in Punchbowl around 5 pm, then it started pouring rain. It was a good decision to finish the trekking early.

"Grand Canyon Walking Track in Blackheath" (Feb 20, 2023)
So far, my favorite part of the Blue Mountains is the vicinity of Blackheath Station.
The most popular spot on the Blue Mountains is probably Echo Point in Katoomba, where the Three Sisters can be seen.
Katoomba Station is about two hours west of Sydney's Central Station, while Blackheath Station is about 15 minutes further west.
There are two observatories where you can enjoy spectacular views of the valley that are not inferior to Echo Point.
One is the "Govetts Leap Lookout" and the other is the "Evans Lookout".
This area was severely damaged by a large wildfire three years ago, and after the wildfire, a large area became a no-go zone. However, the "Grand Canyon Walking Track", which has an entrance at Evans Lookout, was largely unaffected by the fire except near the entrance, probably because it is located in a watery part of the canyon.
This time, I tried walking alone on a weekday. On weekdays, the bus from Blackheath station to Evans Lookout Road is convenient, and on Tuesday, the 8:18 train from Central used by the Blue Maintains Club arrives at Blackheath at 10:30. I took the 10:40 bus from Blackheath Station and arrived at the Evans Lookout Road bus stop before 11:00.
It takes 15 minutes on foot from the bus stop to the entrance of the trail. And if you go down the long descending stairs to enter the valley, you will be on a trekking course in a valley that is different from the top of the cliff.
To me, the bottom of the valley that descends the long stairs is literally walking along the river that flows at the "bottom of the valley", but the actual flow of water cuts the "bottom of the valley" deeper and flows down the bottomless valley. seems to be young people are enjoying "caving" using ropes to descend to the bottom of this valley, which has been carved further and where the light does not reach.
"Caving" is a different category of sport and I enjoy trekking.
This Grand Canyon walking track has multiple overhead water drips and multiple up and down steps.
The course I took ends at "Evans Lookout", and it's a tough place with a series of up-stairs.
The area near the exit of this course was affected by a forest fire three years ago, and because of the withered trees, the direct sunlight is strong.
On this day, I especially regretted forgetting my wide-brimmed hat.
This track is a bit tough for me too. Unlike the Grand Canyon track, it walks over the cliffs, and there is a huge anthill and a creek that flows over the plateau, which is quite interesting.
The Cliff Top Track ends at Govetts Leap Lookout. “Leap” is a waterfall, and here you can see the magnificent twin waterfalls.
This area has been hit hardest by wildfires, but as young shoots sprout from burnt tree trunks, you can witness the plant's immortality.
In particular, the 1.5km flat track that connects Govetts Reap and the information center with the bus stop is called Fairfax Heritage Walk, where you can observe the regeneration of trees.
The information center is called the "Heritage Center" and there are bus services for going to Katumba via Blackheath station. On this day, when I tried to catch this bus that was about to start, I couldn't step forward, and I fell over and hit my face hard on the pavement. It's like giving the earth a big hard kiss. It because I was tired, I couldn’t lift my legs enough as I expected. I told myself to be careful in the future.
The walking distance on that day was 20.3 km, the number of steps was 28,869, and the stairs were equivalent to 71 floors.

真冬の日本から真夏のシドニーにやってきた。さっそく土曜日の韓国人ハイカーのグループに連絡してブルーマウンテンのトレッキングを企画した。
シドニーの仲間に連絡を取ったところ、残念なニュースがあった。それはシドニーでもっとも多く一緒に山行したアイザックが、数週間前、一人でトレッキング中転倒して大怪我をしたことだ。
転倒時、身動きができない状態でスマートホンが使えず、偶然通りかかったハイカーに発見され、ヘリコプターで病院に運ばれて一命をとりとめた。彼は１週間入院して現在自宅療養中であるということだ。
アイザック以外の仲間は以前のとおり集まり、ウェントワース・フォールズで下車、景観の良いトレッキングコースを歩いた。
ウェントワース・フォールズといえば鉄道の駅からこの複数段の滝を結ぶチャールズ・ダーウィン・ウォークが私の好みであるが、このすばらしい散策路はアップグレード工事のため数年にわたって閉鎖中である。
我々はう回路を通って、ウェントワースフォールズ展望台まで道路を歩き、この展望台からトレッキング・コースを歩いた。
断崖の縁にそって「アンダークリフ・トラック」を滝を背にしてコンサベーション・ハットに向かって歩き、途中の「ライヤーバード・ルックアウト」で「オーバークリフ・トラック」に続く。
展望台で眼下の渓谷をみているとところどころに土砂崩れの痕跡がみえる。聞くところによると昨年、ブルーマウンテンに観光で来ていたイギリス人の家族が巻き込まれて死ぬという痛ましい事故があったという。
アイザックの事故はヘリコプターで搬送され入院するという災難だったが、現在、リハビリ中というのは不幸中の幸いである。

我々はコンサベーションハットの東屋で弁当を使い、私はこの日、夕刻にチャッツウッドの息子の家で二女の21歳の誕生祝いがあったので彼らと別れて帰路を急いだ。
息子の長女は昨年、ダーリングハーバーで結婚式を挙げたが、夫とともに妹の誕生祝いに参加した。息子の長男は16歳で現在高校2年生、3女は８歳で小学３年生のMび盛りである。
この日の歩行距離は16.5km、歩数は23,352歩、階段は30階相当だった。
「ザ・グレート・ノース・ウォーク#1と#2」(18/2/2023)
シドニーの鉄道はNSW州の管轄でそのサービスは採算をあまり気にしないという点で時々日本の国鉄時代を思わせる。線路の保守点検のため時々一定区間のサービスを止め、その区間を運賃無料の代替バスを運用する。
この日はブルーマウンテン・ラインが運休のため、トレッキングの方面を変え、ザ・グレート・ノース・ウォークの第１、第２区間を歩いた。
第１区間の出発点はシドニーのMacquarie Placeのオベリスク。この日は雲一つない快晴だがオペラハウスは逆光。
数日前から停泊しているクルーズ船ISLAND PRINCESSの横を通ってハーバーブリッジの下を通過。30分弱の快適な船旅でWoolwichに上陸した。
Woolwich Deckを眺めてからブーゲンビリアが咲き誇る丘の道を進むと最初のブッシュであるKelly’s Bushに入る。ここを抜けると迷路のようなコースを道標を頼りにレイン・コーブ川の脇のコースをさかのぼると第１区間の終点のボローニア・パークに出る。静かな公園のピクニック用のベンチで弁当を食べた。
第２区間はボローニアパークを出発してふたたびレインコーブ川の岸辺のコースを上流へと遡る。このコースはマングローブの生い茂る中に整備された板敷の道で快適である。
途中、バッファロークリーク・パークで小休止。そのあと20人を超えるトレッカーのグループとすれ違った。老若男女混成の中国人グループだった。
マングローブの中の道が続き、マグダラ・パークに出て第2区間は終わる。バス停のあるMowbrow Parkには午後2時半に着いたがさらに第3区間を歩く元気はなかった。
パンチボールのシェアハウスには5時ごろ帰宅したが、その後土砂降りの雨。早めにトレッキングを切り上げて正解だった。

「ブラックヒースのグランドキャニオン・ウォーキング・トラック」(Feb 20, 2023)
現在までのところ、ブルーマウンテンで一番気に入っている地域はブラックヒースである。
ブルーマウンテンで最も人気の高い場所はスリーシスターズがよくみえるカトゥンバのエコーポイントであろう。
カトゥンバ駅はシドニーの中心のセントラル駅から約２時間西方であるが、ブラックヒースはさらに15分ほど西にある。
ここはエコーポイントに劣らない壮大な渓谷の景観が楽しめる2つの展望台がある。
一つは「ゴベットリープ・ルックアウト」であり、もう1つは「エバンス・ルックアウト」である。
この地域は3年前の大規模山火事の被害が甚大だった地域で山火事のあとかなり広範囲に立入禁止地区となった。
ただし、エバンス・ルックアウトに入り口がある「グランド・キャニオン・ウォーキング・トラック」は渓谷の水が豊富な部分にあるせいか、入り口付近を除きほとんど火災の影響を受けなかった。
今回は平日に単独行で歩いてみた。平日はブラックヒース駅からエバンス・ルックアウトまでのバスの便が良く、火曜日の青山会が使うセントラル発８:18の電車でブラックヒース着10:30。ブラックヒース発10:40のバスに乗車し、エバンス・ルックアウトのバス停に11時前に到着する。
バス停から登山路の入り口まで徒歩15分。そして渓谷に入るための長い下り階段を下りれば、崖の上部とは別世界の渓谷の中のトレッキングコースである。
自分には長い階段を下った渓谷の底は、文字通り「谷底」を流れる川に沿って歩くわけなのだが、実際の水の流れは「谷底」をさらに深く削って、底知れぬ谷底を流れているようだ。若者たちがロープを使ってこの谷底のさらに削られた光の届かない谷底に下る「ケービング」を楽しんでいる。
「ケービング」は別のカテゴリーのスポーツで私はあくまでトレッキングを楽しむ。
このグランドキャニオン・ウォーキング・トラックでは頭上から水がしたたる部分が何カ所もあり、上り下りの階段歩きも何カ所もある。 私の取ったコースでは最後が「エバンス・ルックアウト」に出るもので、上り階段が続く辛いところだ。
このコースの出口付近は3年前の山火事の影響を受け、立ち木が枯れているため直射日光がきつい。
この日、いつも被るつば広ハットを忘れたことを特に後悔した。
エバンスルックアウトは素晴らしい景観であるが、さらに１時間余り、断崖の上に続く、クリフ・トップ・トラックを歩いた。
このトラックもかなりきつい。グランドキャニオン・トラックと異なり断崖の上を歩くわけだが、巨大なアリ塚があり、プラトーの上を流れるクリークがあり、趣がある。
クリフ・トップ・トラックの終点はゴベット・リープ・ルックアウトである。「リープ」とは滝のことで、ここには双子の滝と言われる勇壮な滝が見れる。
この周辺は山火事の被害を最も受けた場所で、しかし、焼けた木々の幹から若枝が伸び、植物の不死の力を目撃できる。
特にゴベッツリープとバス停のある情報センターを結ぶ1.5kmの平坦なトラックはFairfax Heritage Walkと呼ばれ、木々の再生状況がよく観察できる。
情報センターは「Heritage Center」と呼ばれ、ブラックヒース駅近くのバス停を経由してカトゥンバ行となっている。
この日、走り出しそうなこのバスを捕まえようとして足が前に出ず、前面転倒して顔面をしたたか舗装道路に打ち付けてしまった。まるで大地に盛大なキスをしたようだ。
疲れていると足が思うように上がらない。今後心すべしと言い聞かせた。
