130420 DeokRyongSan (徳龍山덕룡산376m) in Gangjin (康津강진), JeonNam (全南전남) Province

Date: April 20 (Sat) Rain then cloudy

Place: DeokRyongSan (徳龍山덕룡산376m) in Gangjin (康津강진), JeonNam (全南전남) Province

Course: Soseokmun – Dongbong – Mt. Deokryong – Jakcheonsoryong – Suyangri Park (About 13 km/6 hours)

Partners: 23 AhtoSan members

Since the mountain is far from Daejeon, we left the bus-stop one hour earlier (at 6 am), so I got up at 3:30 and prepared for the hike.

[A map of Mt. Deokryong for hiking,

When I got out of my studio apartment, I noticed that it was raining. So, I went back to my room and prepared for the raining hiking. It was a bit cold rain.

On the way to Gangjin, we had a little ceremony to award “Heras” as a best member, and “Sansalang” to celebrate his 200th regular hike.

[We celebrated Sansalang's 200th hike,

There were only 24 participants for the bus with 44 seats. I could use two seats for my own use, so I could work my private business (to check Kanji quiz for my students) on the bus.

When we came close to the mountain, we had a little traffic accident at a curve near a reservoir. A small truck hit our bus. We had to call a police car and it took about 20 minutes to settle down the accident.

We began hiking at 10:30 in the rain after taking a group picture.

I managed to follow the top group for about 30 minutes, then many AhToSan hikers went ahead of me.

We had a short break “Suzuki Time” at 11 am. I offered grapes and Kumquats or cumquats. It is called “Kinkan” in Japaense, and Korean people also called “kingkang낑깡” as well. They have their own language name 금귤(金橘), though.

Since it was raining a bit, the flowers got wet and they were beautiful. We could see “Jindallae” a lot on this mountain, but I also found “Iris rossii Baker” one of my favorite flowers. They were beautiful, and I saw them rather many during this hike.

When I caught up the main group of AhToSan who were having lunch on the ridge was at 12:08. I joined them and offered high quority “Pig's trotters” which I bought previous day.

At about this time, it stopped raining, and it was much easier to hike without rain.

Since the mountain was very rocky, it was rather dangerous to climb because wet rock was slippery.

The “Jindallae” on the ridge was in full bloom, and it was really beautiful.

We could enjoytaking a lot of pictures of these flowers and the rocky peaks of the mountains.

I was between the middle group and the last group of hikers and a few AhToSan members around me.

[Camellia flowers at the last peak,

When I came down from the last peak, I was almost tumbling on the rock, but thank God that I did not. I felt that I had been protected by my God and I thanked him.

[Violets on the down trail,

When I was about to go to Mt. Jujank, the president of AhToSan called me from my back, “Don’t go, Mr. Suzuki, we were too late to go to another mountain.”

[Iris rossii Baker on the down trail,

I followed his advice, and went down from the point to make a short cut.

Actually it was not a short cut, but easier and safer course to the destination.

When we came out to the village, I could see rape blossoms in full bloom.

[A reservoir near the destination,

I arrived at the final destination at 4:10 pm, not too bad.

There were several villagers selling their agricultural products (or simply took from nearby mountains.)

[Villagers selling vegetables,

I bought several vegetables including "Kalopanax septemlobus," common name prickly castor oil tree.

Actually, I did not know this plant and I asked the woman who was selling this plant. She told me it was “Eumnamu음나무” and it was “Harigiriハリギリ針桐” in Japanese.

I enjoyed the taste of this plant very much at home. (It cost 3000 won, about 3 dollars.)

We had a wrap-up party when all members finished the hike. The main dish was seasoned squids with vegetable.

We came back to Daejeon at around 9 pm. It was my 17th hike for this year, and my 310th regular hike of AhToSan hiking club.

[We celebrated Sansalang's 200th hike,

[A little traffic accident,

[The president and his staff members,

[Lunch time on the ridge,

[After the lunch with a female staff member,

[At the top of Mt. Deokryong,

[Violets on the down trail,

[Camellia flowers at the last peak,

[Iris rossii Baker on the down trail,

[Rape blossoms in a village,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalopanax
