Date: Oct. 19 (Sat), 2013 (Cloudy)

Destination: Gayasan (1433m), Hapcheon(陜川ハプチョン합천), Gyongsam(慶南경남) Province

Course: Baekundong – Seojangdae – Manmulsang – Chilbulbong (1433m) – Sangwangbong (1430m) – Haeinsa Temple – Parking Lot (10 km, 6 hours)

Participants: 39 including Helena (Russian) and me.

[Map of Gayasan,

It had been fine days, except Saturday! It was cloudy, and as we climbed the mountain the cloud became thicker and thicker. Too bad.

It was my 3rd hike to this course. The first time for me was with Oh Nari, a female personnel at ETRI in 2005.

[With Oh Nari in 2005, 2005年ナリと一緒に、2005 년 나리와 함께]

And the 2nd time was 3 years ago on Oct. 30, 2010. (I uploaded the blog to my previous pages.)

The most special thing about this hike was that I walked with Elena, the Russian hiker whom I got to know through Taejonhikers’ hike.

Just like other Russian hikers whom I know, she was also a good hiker, and I could cope with her with my best efforts.

It was her first hike with AhToSan, so she got up early and came to the bus stop at Expo South Gate at 5:20 am!

She called me while I was heading toward the south gate at 5:45 am.

Up to now, many foreigners joined AhToSan hike, but she was the first person who came to the bus stop more than 30 minutes earlier than the departure time.

Anyhow, we sat together in the almost-full bus, and had breakfast break at a parking lot of a certain restaurant near the destination.

[Breakfast time on the way, 途中で朝食タイム、도중에 아침 식사]

We had 50 time celebration for two members; “Pianoman” and “Deolkodeonng.”

[The 50th hike celebration for two men, ピアノマンとドルコドンの50回登山祝い、피아노맨과 덜커덩 50번 등산 축하]

Both of them are good and strong hikers.

We arrived at Baekundong Parking Lot at 8:45. We had stretch exercise under the leadership of Alain Delon.

[Group picture before the hike,

Then we began hiking.

There was a wild flower botanical garden at Baekuundong. I remembered this building because of its unique design.

[Gayasan Wild Flower Botanical Garden,

I thought I could walk with Elena together, but she walked much faster than I imagined.

[Wooden steps,

[A scenery from the ridge,

[A view of Manmulsan,

I could manage to follow her for about one hour. Then I called for “Suzuki Time.”

[Elena and AhTo members,

[Autumnal color on the ridge,

After having “Suzuki Time” it was a ridge hike on “Manmulsang Ridge.”

[With J-nim at Manmulsang, Jニムと万物相にて、J 님과 만물상에서]

[At Manmulsang,

It reminded me of “Manmulsang Ridge” in Geumgangsan in North Korea. The shape of rocks are unique and interesting.

[At Manmulsang,

I took a picture of Deolkodeong, then I saw Elena ahead of me. I called her to wait for me. She did. Then we walked together, so that I could take her pictures with wonderful landscapes.

There were some steep stairs, but Elena walked fast.

But as we climbed higher the cloud got thicker. When it was almost noon, we came to the place where the top group hikers were having lunch on a ridge.

[The top group having lunch,

So, we joined them and had lunch together. I had a “Cup Noodle” and a pack of bean rice provided by AhToSan for lunch. Elena had sandwiches for her lunch.

While we were having lunch, the middle group hikers and the last group members joined us.

When the last group joined us, Elena and I resumed afternoon hike.

[Elena at iron steps,

We were walking in the cloud, and could not see much because of the cloud.

[Near the summit,

We arrived at Chilbulbong at around 12:30. Anyhow, we took “recognition shot” with the big stone monument on the summit. Then we kept going in the cloud.

[At the summit of Chilbulbong,

Elena and I missed the next stone monument of Sangwangbong, which is the main peak of Gayasan, that I regret. [Some members successfully arrived at the summit as below.]

We soon started to descend the mountain.

[On the descending trail,

As we came lower and lower, the cloud was disappeared.

[On the descending trail,

I could see beautiful autumnal colors here and there along the trail.

[On the descending trail,

We exchanged much private talks, and I learned that her daughter got married with a Canadian guy when she was 21 years old.

[On the descending trail,

Elena said she also got married at 21 years old, and so did her mother. So three generations, they got married at the age of 21.

[On the descending trail,

She had a question on inter-culture marriage, as we talked about Michael, a French member of Taejonhikers, who would marry a Korean lady on Oct. 20 (next day.)

I told her that our son had successful marriage life with his Chinese wife in Australia. The success of marriage does not matter of inter-culture marriage or mono-culture marriage. Elena herself got divorce with her Russian man.

Anyhow, we arrived at Haeinsa Temple, the famous temple which holds Janggyeong Panjeon (National Treasure No.52).

Haeinsa:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haeinsa

I saw blue flower of“Aconitum”or "the queen of poisons" at the temple.

[“Aconitum”or "the queen of poisons",

The temple gate is unique with strange figure in front of it, so I clearly remember it.

The temple was very crowded with people, and it was a bit long trail from the gate to the parking lot.

When I saw a beautiful maple tree with red color at the bridge, I remembered the previous hike.

There was an open market along the trail. For Elena, it was quite interesting site since she came to Korea only 6 months ago.

[An open air market near the parking lot,

It was 3 pm when we arrived at the parking lot. The top group hikers were already having a wrap-up party at the parking lot.

[Elena at a table of wrap-up party,

“Mancha” a good cook, was in charge of the party that day. The main menu was “Dotori-muk” or “acorn jello” and “Pajeong” or “green onion pancake.” Beverages were makgeolli, soju and beer.

[Cake at wrap-up party,

The main (middle) group came to join us at 3:30 pm and the last hikers arrived at the parking lot at 3:45 pm.

We ended the part at 4 pm and went back to Daejeon.

On our way back to Daejeon, Mr. Park, stopped at the tourist resort of Dae-Gaya “[Dae-Gaya History Theme Tourist Resort.”

We came back to Daejeon at around 7 pm. It was my 52nd hike for this year, and 329th hike of AhToSan regular hike.

[Breakfast time on the way, 途中で朝食タイム、도중에 아침 식사]

[The 50th hike celebration for two men, ピアノマンとドルコドンの50回登山祝い、피아노맨과 덜커덩 50번 등산 축하]

[Gayasan Wild Flower Botanical Garden,

[Autumnal colors at the foot of the mountain,

[The view of Manmulsan,

[Elena with other members,

[Elena with other members,

[George at Manmulsang,

[Elena at Manmulsang,

[The top group having lunch,

[Elena on the ridge,

[At the guidepost on the ridge,

[Near the summit,

[At the summit of Chilbulbong,

[AhTo members at Sangwangbong(Udubong),

[We began descending,

[George on the descending trail,

[On the descending trail,

[On the descending trail,

[On the descending trail,

[On the descending trail,

[“Aconitum”or "the queen of poisons",

[At Haeunsa Temple,

[At the mountain gate of Haeinsa,

[Elena at the valley near the temple,

[An open air market near the parking lot,

[At wrap-up party, 打ち上げにて、뒤풀이에서]

[Elena and Grace at the party,
