The wake-up call range at 3:15 am. We had to go to the airport at 4 am. Some of the tour members complained about the tight schedule. But we had to go through rather strick security procedures. When we came to the boarding gate, it was already past 5:35 am. Anyway our plane took off at 6:05, just on schedule and landed at Las Vegas airport at 7:35 am.
My wife and I got so called “bulkhead seats” next to the emergency exit. Since I got the window seat, I could enjoy the sceneries of wilderness, mountains, and even canyons from the window.

We had a new local guide, Mr. Matsumoto. We soon left Las Vegas and headed for Grand Canyon.
[A cactus flower,그랜드 캐니언 도상으로 본 선인장의 꽃] It was a long bus ride, taking 5 or 6 hours. We went through the wilderness of the West. Mr. Matsumoto explained the following points first.
1. Related to solar power generation, he introduced America’s power generation ratio: 50% by themal power (mainly using coals), 30% by atomic power, 20% other resources including solar power.
2. Strange plants called “Joshua trees.” Joshua tree looks like a man holding another man’s arm. It is named so by Mormons. When Mormons saw these trees, they reminded them of Joshua in the Bible. (When Moses opened the Red Sea and led Jews from Egypt as Exodus, Joshua held the arm of Moses.)
3. Story about “Route 66” (We visited a small town which used to be along Route 66.)
4. Story about Hoover Dam (Constructed from 1931 to 1936, Total reservoir resover capacity is about 40 billion tons while total reservoir capacity of 2500 Japanese dams is 25 billion tons.) All buses now have divert the highway not to go close to the dam because of tighter security since “911.”

We arrived at South Rim of Grand Canyon at around 3 pm. We were really impressed by the “grand” scenes of Grand Canyon.
The depth of the canyon is about 1600 meters. It takes a whole day to walk down to the bottom of the canyon. There were facilities to stay overnight at the bottom, but it is difficult to get reservations esp. during the holiday seasons.
During the 40 minute-free time, my wife and I walkd toward the prestigious hotel where former President of Clington stayed twice along the rim for 20 minutes, and then returned to the point we started walking.
After the first experice of seeing Grand Canyon, we checked in a rodge within the park. I saw two wild elks roaming near our bus. Their horns are gracious.

[The dining room at the lodge, ロッジの食堂、로지의 식당]Then we went to the rim again by shuttle-bus to see beautiful sunset. While waiting for the bus, it began raining hard. It was a brief rain, and we could see rainbows in the sky.
While waiting for the shuttle-bus, I noticed an Oriental family of five (parents and 3 kids.) My wife spoke to them and confirmed that they were Japanese.
[A Japanese family from Kentucky, ケンタッキーからきた日本人一家、켄터키로부터 온 일본인일가] They come from Kentucky and the father works for Toyota. Their kids (two daughters and a boy) are; 10, 8 and 3 years old, just like our son in Australia.
We saw beautiful sunset at Grand Canyon, and returned to the lodge at 9 pm.

[A rainbow on Grand Canyon 2、グランドキャニオンにかかった虹、그랜드 캐니언(Grand Canyon)에 걸린 무지개]2010年7月1日、ツアー3日目、SFから早い飛行機でラスベガスへ向かい、ラスベガスから専用バスでグランドキャニオンへ向かった。朝のモーニングコールはなんと3時15分。特に高齢のツアー客からはスケジュールがきつすぎると言う声も出た。
空港には4時に着いたが、ここでもセキュリティチェックが厳しく、搭乗口に着いたのは、航空券に指定された5時35分を過ぎていた。
それでも予定通り6時5分にSF空港を出発した。我々は非常口の脇のいわゆるバルクヘッド席で、私は窓際。空の上から荒野と山脈とグランドキャニオンの風景を楽しんだ。飛行時間は約90分で、ラスベガスには7時半に到着した。
[Las Vegas airport、ラスベガス空港、라스베가스공항] 空港には現地ガイドの松本氏が出迎え。さっそく大型バスでグランドキャニオンへ向かった。
天気は快晴で、広大な荒野の風景は大陸ならでのものだろう。松本氏の説明はバスの窓から見える風景について、
①ソーラーパネル→米国の発電事情(石炭を主とする火力50%、原子力20%、水力その他が30%、
②人が手を挙げているようにみえる「ヨシュアの木」：モルモン教徒がバイブルから命名したという。
だが、松本氏の説明の中で、モーセを神と言ったり、彼が紅海を割ったと言うのは誤りで、モーセは預言者にすぎず、紅海を割ったのはモーセではなく、「神」がモーセを通して働かれたとしなければならないところだが、クリスチャンでなければしかたない誤認と思いあえて訂正しなかった。

④フーバーダムが「911」後、セキュリティの問題で観光バスが迂回するようになった、等だった。
前日渡された握り飯弁当の朝食はバスに乗ってから食べ、当日渡された豪華なサンドイッチの昼食もバスの中で食べた。
ルート99の雰囲気が残る土産屋でやや長い休憩をとった後、グランドキャニオンに到着した。
いわゆる「サウスリム」から初めて見るグランドキャニオンの景観には感動した。
リムに沿っての散策では、妻と私は、クリントン元大統領が2回も泊まり、日本の皇族も泊まったと言うホテル側に20分進み、そこから20分引き返してすぐ40分の見学時間は終わった。
その後、公園内にある宿泊施設へ移動した。すると突然、バスのそばに立派なヘラ鹿2頭が現れて、悠然と草を食べて去った。

夕食は学食のような食堂。前菜はサラダ、メインはビーフ(といってもミンチのようなもの)、それに飲み物はコーヒーをとったがデザートはとるのを失念した。
他のメンバー3、４人と一緒に食べた。その後、全員そろってシャトルバスでサンセットを鑑賞しに行った。
バスを待つ間、にわか雨があり、虹が立った。この時、日本人らしい5人家族をみかけた。喜久子が話しかけたようで、ケンタッキーからきたというトヨタ社員の家族。
彼らの子どもは10歳と8歳の女の子2人と末っ子は3歳の男の子。
我々のシドニー在中の長男、肇一家の3人の子どもとほぼ同じ構成で、親しみを感じた。
にわか雨はすぐに止み、沈む夕日を見た。曇っていたため、満点の星というわけにはいかなかったが、9時前には部屋に戻った。
