SR # 34 "Vaccination of COVIT-19" "Autumn Leaves in Chatswood" "Trekking around Sydney Bay"

To May 6, there are 29,663 cases including 910 deaths of COVIT-19 since January 25 of last year. It has been 35 days since NSW's last locally-spread infection.

[Resuming face-to-face worship in the church,

However, the vaccination plan is not on schedule. That's because Australia's available vaccine was only AZ's vaccine (now Pfizer vaccines are available), and it was announced on April 8 that it would not be recommended for people under the age of 50.

Initially, all adults in Australia were vaccinated 40 million times at the end of October 2021, but the pace of vaccination slowed down and now it is 360,000 times a week. By this pace, it is said that the achievement time of 40 million times will be May 2023!

I received the first vaccination on April 16th at the recommendation of my GP and received a certificate. Next time is July 9th, 12 weeks later. The vaccination site was a nearby medical institution, where I first had an interview by the GP and then got vaccinated by a vaccination specialist. I waited on the spot for 15 minutes to confirm that there were no side effects, and then I was released.

[COCIT-19 Vaccination certificate,

According to one of my trekking friends who received the vaccination earlier, he had a mild fever on the day or the next day.

But I had an appointment of meeting my trekking mentor, Chang, in the afternoon of that day (April 16). I walked with him from Maroubra Beach to Little Bay Beach, for about 10 km.

[Trekking on the day of vaccination,

The next day was April 17. I led the group of Saturday Hikers Group of 5 people and we walked another 10 km in Katoomba. I felt fine, no side effects at all.

“Autumn Leaves in Chatswood”

The seasons are completely opposed here in South Hemisphere from North Hemisphere. So, spring in Japan means autumn in Australia. Autumn colors in Northern part of Japan is very beautiful because temperature difference is great in summer and winter.

The climate of Sydney is mild and there are many evergreen trees, so the autumn colors are not noticeable. However, when trekking around the city, you can see the autumn leaves of deciduous trees.

[Autumn Colors in Catswood,

It's fun to see the colors of certain roadside trees gradually change as you walk alone in the morning and evening. Also, on a nearby trek with my friends on Thursday afternoon, I found a "wood ear" on the roadside tree. "Kikurageキクラゲ" mushroom literally means “Wood jellyfish” but in Chinese, as well as in English, it is “木耳:Wood ear” In Korean, it is called "mogi posok (목이 버섯)", and "mogi목이" is the Korean reading of the kanji "木耳".

[Weed ear mushrooms,

When I see these fresh mushrooms on the tree, they do look like ear lobes. So, Chinese, Korean and English, these mush rooms are “Wood ears” all right. Only in Japanese, we call “Kikurage” or “Wood jellyfish.” Why? I think it is because after putting dried “Wood ears” they become soft and look like jellyfish. However, if you look it up with Japanese dictionary, “Kikurageキクラゲ” in Katakana and Kanji is “木耳.”

Wood ears are often used as an ingredient of Chinese and Korean dishes. I found wood ears in 八宝菜 Babaocai (Chinese: 八寶菜) or Japchae (잡채; 雜菜), so, I took these wood ears from the tree, and I cooked with other vegetables and ham. They tasted very good, and I enjoyed this taste of autumn with my wife, every morning for about a week.

"Trekking around Sydney Bay"

One of the great attractions of outdoor people living in Sydney is trekking around the Gulf of Sydney, as well as trekking in the inland areas such as the Blue Mountains.

The starting point for The Great North Walk, which travels north from Sydney to Newcastle, is Circular Quay on the wharf under the Harbor Bridge, but the starting point for relay trekking along the Sydney Harbor Bridge is also Circular Quay.

To date, I have completed the following 5 sections.

1) From Rose Bay to Watson Bay (2/26)

2) From Watsons Bay to Bondi Beach (2/12)

3) From Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach (3/19)

4) From Coogee Beach to Maroubra Beach (4/9)

5) From Maroubra Beach to Little Bay (4/16)

----------------------------------

1) From Rose Bay to Watson Bay

February 26th (Friday) Sunny. In the afternoon, I met Chang, my trekking mentor, at Circular Quay. We landed at Rose Bay by ferry at 14:45. We walked the trekking course of Rose Bay to Watson Bay. It took just over 3 hours. On the way, probably because of the good weather, the beach was crowded with many swimmers. I also saw a seaplane take off from near the beach in a small cove.

[From Circular Quay to Rose Bay,

We had three short breaks, including before departure. It was the right time. However, the return Ferry from Watson Bay could not be boarded 8 minutes late at 4:40, the next flight was the last flight at 5:20, and it cost extra because it was a private ferry. However, many yachts were running at sea on the way back and it was spectacular. Chang changed the ferry and returned to his home, and I returned to my home by train.

2) From Watsons Bay to Bondi Beach

February 12 (Friday) Sunny. After finishing Yourside meal at the club in Roseville, I headed to Wynyard to meet Chang at Wharf at 1:45 pm. We took 2:00 pm ferry and landed at Watsons Bay. We began the 2-hour trekking to Bondi Beach along the coast. The view of the sea from Watson Bay is amazing.

[A view from Watson Bay Lookout,

On the hill after passing the observatory, we saw a lot of blackberries along the track. We picked up the blackberries and ate as much as we wanted.

[Lots of blackberries in the bush,

The trekking course on the hill has a light facility that charges sunlight along the track and emits light at night, making night walks safe. There were many people at Bondi Beach. The bus for the junction came soon and I returned to Chatswood via Town Hall before 7 o'clock.

3) From Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach

March 19 (Friday) Cloudy after rain. In the afternoon, I changed trains at Town Hall to Bondi Junction and headed for Bondi Beach by bus from Platform A. I arrived at 14:45 pm before McDonald's. Chang arrived 20 minutes late.

[A map which shows the course from Bondi to Coogee,

The course from Bondi Beach toward south was the same as the one I walked with Thursday hikers, Marshall and Peter nearly one year ago. However, it goes without saying that Chang is wilder than Thursday hikers. The rain stopped in the afternoon, but the wind was still strong. The sceneries along the beach were dynamic and wonderful due to strong winds and big waves.

[At the seashore along the trail,

I was surprised that many young people enjoy surfing and swimming in this rough sea. We arrived at the destination Coogee Beach at 6 o'clock. It was past 7 o'clock when I went Central by bus and returned to Chatswood, but I felt very tired. This day was the only one that exceeded 20,000 steps this week.

4) From Coogee Beach to Maroubra Beach

April 9th (Friday) Sunny. Daylight saving time is over and sunset is early. The start was 2:00 pm. I took the 12:55 train to Central. Chang told me that the bus was # 372 from the C stand, so I managed to arrive at Coogee Beach at 13:25. After taking a break on the beach for about 10 minutes, we started trekking.

[We started Coogee Bearch,

This time it was rather a short trekking only to the next beach, Maroubra. Maroubra Beach is about twice as large as Coogee Beach and many people enjoy surfing. People can enjoy swimming in the rocky pools on sea shores. Chang swam well while I was eating my lunch, and even after I left home at 5 pm, he stayed there and enjoyed swimming more.

[Chang swam while I was waiting,

5) From Maroubra Beach to Little Bay

April 16 (Friday) I got a shot of AstraZeneca vaccination in the morning. I had an early lunch and left home around 12:15. It was 13:45 when I arrived at Maroubra Beach by #395 bus from bus stand C of Central.

[Flowers at Maroubra Beach,

Chang also arrived at almost the same time. We began trekking on the beach toward the south end the beach.

There was a No Trespassing sign there. Later I learned that this was due to the military rifle shooting range. However, there is a comfortable walk track near this sign, and we could walk around the peninsula for about an hour to Malabar Beach, and then walk along the coast of the golf course to Little Bay. We walked for a little over two and a half hours in total.

[My trekking mentor Chang along the trekking course,

There were no side effects of vaccination, but psychologically I was influenced. At Little Bay, we took #392 bus, which was about to depart, and when we arrived at Town Hall, it was close to 5:30 pm,

Chang and I have now walked all five sections from Rose Bay next to Circular Quay to Little Bay. Further south from Little Bay, we may reach Royal National Park.

[Resuming face-to-face worship in the church,

[COCIT-19 Vaccination certificate,

[Trekking on the day of vaccination,

[Autumn Colors in Catswood,

[Weed ear mushrooms,

[From Circular Quay to Rose Bay,

[Yacht race in Sydney Bay、

[A view from Watson Bay Lookout,

[A trekking course along the seashore,

[A lot of sea bathers at Bondi Beach,

[At the edge of the seashore,

[The place where Virgin Mary is said to have appeared,

[We started Coogee Bearch,

[At Maroubra Beach,

[A flower at Maroubra Beach,

[The seashore near Little Bay,
