"Climbing Mt. Ohyama (1,252m)"

In April 2022, I returned from Sydney, Australia for the first time in four years. Transportation is cheap in Australia (NSW). The maximum per day is 2.5 Australian dollars (222 yen at rate A$1 = 90 yen) for unlimited rides on trains, subways, buses and ferries. Therefore, both a round trip from Sydney to the Blue Mountains and The Great North Walk, which continues to Newcastle, which is more than 250km away, are very economical as far as transportation costs are concerned.

Since returning to Japan, transportation costs have become a problem for enjoying mountain climbing here. In Kanagawa, where I live, you can enjoy authentic mountain climbing in the Tanzawa Mountain Range and Mt. Hakone. Mt. Ohyama (1,252m), which forms a corner of the Tanzawa Mountain Range, is particularly convenient for me to access, and in 2022, I climbed it four times. The transportation cost is about 2084 yen round trip.

2) 27 September: Higanbana (Lycoris radiata, known as the red spider lily) at the foot of Mt. Ohyama

3) 28 November: Best time to see autumn leaves around Ohyamadera (temple)

4) 16 December: The view from the summit in winter is the best. I found a new lookout on the summit.

[Mt. Fuji from Fujimi-dai,

16 December (Fri) sunny. 3-13°C. Since it was a beautiful sunny day, I decided to climb Mt. Oyama for the fourth time this year. I took the train at 6:04 at Ofuna Station, transferred to Fujisawa and arrived at Isehara at 7:30.

I took a bus 30 minutes earlier than the last time, and arrived at Oyama Cable Station, at exactly 8:00. Everything was 30 minutes ahead of last time, and I climbed at a fairly easy pace.

I could see beautiful Mt.Fuji from Fujimidai for the first time this year. Attracted by the splendid frost column, I went to the course behind the shrine on the summit. This was my first experience and I found great prospects.

[Frost colum near the top of Mt. Ohyama,

This place is under the new antenna tower. Looking to the left, I could see the mountains of Hakone, Mt. Fuji in the center, and the snow-capped Southern Alps and the Tanzawa mountains in the distance on the right.

[Mt. Fuji and Tanzawa Mountain Ridge,

This is an unprecedented prospect for me. I have probably climbed Mt. Oyama more than 20 times so far, but this was the first time I found it.

The toilets near the summit cannot be used due to freezing. I went up from the stairs in front of the toilet and took a commemorative photo at the place of the sign. My lunch were only cup noodles and bread purchased in front of Isehara station.

I started descent at exactly 12:00, but I couldn't catch the bus at 14:20 in front of Hinata Yakushi-mae, so I ended up taking the same bus at 15:20 as last time. However, this time I brought sticks, so there was no risk for the trekking. I made my way home much easier than before.

"Climbing Mount Kintoki (1,212m) : Otome Pass ~ The Summit ~ Kintoki Shrine"

9 January 2023, Monday, 2023, sunny. 1-14°C. I took 6:04 train of the Tokaido Line at Ofuna Station. I took the bus bound for Togendai (at 6:50) from the Odawara Station East Exit #4 bus stop. At Sengoku, I transferred to the highway bus bound for Shinjuku and get off at Otome Pass. It was very cold for 9 minutes (7:32/7:41) while waiting for the bus in Sengoku.

When I got off at Otome Pass (7:47), I could see Mt. Fuji in front of me. I was the only passenger to get off there. Since it was my first time to take this course, I didn't know the trailhead.

[Mt. Fuji from Otome Pass,

There was a staircase leading to "Otome no Kane (The Bell of Maiden)" on the side of the bus stop. It was only an Observation Deck and the trail led to the dead-end.

["Otomeno Kame (The Bell of Maiden)",

There was a sign saying that there was no climbing trail ahead, and that it was on the other side of the road.

On the other side of the road from the bus stop, there was a signboard indicating the climbing route to Mt. Kintoki, and there was a well-maintained climbing trail. After climbing for about 30 minutes, there was Otome Pass on the old road, and there was an observatory.

There was a crossroad ahead of the observatory, and if you turned left, you would reach Mt. Kintoki, where there were relatively new tables and chairs for rest. I took a coffee break here.

[Hakone mountains with volcanic smoke,

During the break, I exchanged words with a hiker from Gotemba. From here, you can see the Hakone Central Volcanic Group and Owakudani volcanic plume.

This course follows the outer rim of Mt. Hakone and leads to the summit via a wide mountain trail of Mt. Nagao.

There are pay toilets and two teahouses on the summit. I ate lunch at an old table outside the Kintoki Musume Teahouse on the lower level.

[At the top of Mt. Kintoki,

After taking pictures at two photo spots on the summit, I descended to the other side of the summit. I turned right at the first intersection when I started descending and went down in the direction of Sengokuhara.

To be precise, I could easily arrive at the bus stop at 14:35 on the course going down to Kintoki Shrine. At Kintoki Shrine, there were 5 or 6 free-range chickens, and a girl in the lower grades of elementary school or a kindergartener was feeding them. Also, there was a nice toilet.

The next bus was at 15:20, so I walked along the bus route toward Sengoku. At the Sengoku bus stop, I missed the Odawara-bound bus, and the next bus was for Gora.

From Gora, I took the mountain railway to Yumoto, then from Yumoto, I took the Odakyu train to Odawara, and from Odawara, I took the JR train back to Ofuna.

This course saves time, and if there is no time loss at Otome Pass, it would probably be enough for the 14:20 bus. On that day, I went home and watched a sumo match at home.

Amount of exercise: Walking distance 16.8km/25,472 steps /75 floors

"Canola Flower Field of Azumayama Park"

I learned from the radio that the canola flowers in Azumayama Park are in full bloom. So on January 18th (Wednesday) I went to Azumayama Park in Ninomiya.

The town hall course in front of the station is quite steep, but there are benches on the way to rest. After about 20 minutes of climbing, you will reach the second observatory.

[A view of Sagami Bay.

The scenery of Sagami Bay from here is very good. There are also many narcissus planted around it. These give off a nice fragrance. I enjoyed the first coffee break here.

[Narcissus flowers in Azumayama Park.

Unfortunately, it was cloudy that day, and I could not expect a clear view of Mt. Fuji from the summit. However, I could see Tanzawa Omote Ridge and Mt. Ohyama well.

[Canola flowers and Mount Tanzawa,

The canola flowers are in full bloom and there are many people. I sat on the stone under the observatory at the top and enjoyed my second coffee break while having the scenery directly in front of Mt.Fuji.

[Canola flowers field at Ozumayama Park,

After taking pictures of the canola flowers near the top for a while, I had lunch time on a bench near the playground equipment like a roller coaster.

I enjoyed talking with an elderly couple who took turns with the two women who had taken the place at first. They said they came from Matsuda. For a while, we talked about the NHK TV drama "The Thirteen Lords of Shogun" and "What to do with Ieyasu."

Before 12 o'clock, we split up and I used the clean toilet in front of the management office. Then I went down to Nakazatoguchi Exit. The course going down to Nakazatoguchi was gentle, and there was a plum grove along the way. The plum blossoms were beginning to bloom. Arrive at Ninomiya Station after walking for about 30 minutes. It was a light trek. I hope I can visit again on a clear day when Mt.Fuji can be seen clearly.

Amount of exercise: Walking distance 16.8km/25,472 steps/61 floors.

[Mt. Fuji from the top of Mt. Ohyama,

[Frost colum near the top of Mt. Ohyama,

[Mt. Fuji from Otome Pass,

[The view from the top of Mt. Kintoki,

[At the top of Mt. Kintoki,

[Narcissus flowers & Himalayan spindle.

[Canola flowers and Mount Tanzawa,

Ca [Canola flowers field at Ozumayama Park,
