130120 Tagajo in Miyagi(宮城県多賀城), Hisanohama, Iwaki-shi, in Fukushima(福島県いわき市久ノ浜) and Hirakata, Kitaibaraki, Ibaraki-ken(平潟、北茨城市、茨城県)

Date: Jan. 20 (Sun) 2013, Fine

Course: Sendai = Tagajo (Senseki Line), - (Tohoku Shinkansen) – Koriyama – (Bus) – Iwaki – (Joban Line) – Otsukou - Hirakata

I visited the Shiogama Bible Baptist Church (SBBC) this day. Mr. & Mrs. Barkman who served my mother church in Japan (Shonan Nozomi Christ Church), are now attending the service of SBBC and actively working mission service this area. So, I had an appointment to see Mr. Barkman at JR Tagajo Station at 9:10 am.

It took about 20 minutes from Sendai to Tagajo Station by Senseki Line. The Senseki Line was badly damaged by the disaster on March 11, 2011. It was not recovered completely, but so far, up to Tagajo, no problem. The platform was elevated by newly built building.

Mr. Barkman came to pick me up on time. He took me to his house, first, where Mrs. Barkman was waiting for us.

The morning service started at 9:30. The church building looked new, but it was built before the disaster. It was much larger than I expected. The congregation was about 60, it was also more than I thought.

They had lively service, especially for music praise. They had even an electric guitar player.

[Praising the Lord time at the church,

The messenger was a Japanese pastor, and several foregin missionaries besides Mr. & Mrs. Barkman.

They had a tea-time after the service, but I had a little time there since I was to visit my relatives that afternoon.

[Partially broken school building,

Mr. Barkman took me to show the area where he was working as mission work. The area where the disaster hit badly by earthquake, fire and tsunami.

[The tsunami washed away the whole village along the coast,

He also took me to the provisional housing area. People who lost their houses are temporarily living in those houses.

Mr. Barkman took me to Tagajo Station and I took 12:19 train to Sendai. I changed trains to Tohoku Shinkansen and headed for Koriyama Station. I bought an Ekiben named "Umino Kagayaki" for my lunch.

[Ekiben named "Umino-kagayaki" or "Brightness of the sea",

The next destination was Iwaki city where one of my cousins was living. I took a direct bus from Koriyama to Iwaki city.

[I took a bus from Koreayama to Iwaki,

Yoshihisa, one of my cousin came to pick me up at Iwaki Station. He took me to his home in Hisanohama.

[The torii(shrine gate) left after tsunami washed everything away,

This time, I did not enter his house, but just looked around the tsunami-hit area. The huge mountain of rubbles were taken away, but no buildings there.

[One of my cousin took me the affected area,

[The building of the elementary school in front of my cousin's home,

The recovery of the area seemed not to begin yet.

Yoshihisa and his wife took me to a coffee-shop in front of Iwaki Station. We spent for about 40 minutes until my train came.

I took Joban Line train from Iwaki to Otsukou where another relative was waiting for me.

Takashi is a fisherman at Hirakata Harbor where my father was born nearly one hundred years ago. Takashi is my father’s brother’s son’s son. In other words, my cousin’s son.

His three-story house was washed by tsunami, but since it was a well-built concrete house, it remained as it was.

He and two of his sons saved 3 of their fishing boats by driving them to the sea soon after he felt the strong quake. But they could not sell the fish because of nuclear contamination.

According to Takashi, the operator of clippled nuclear reactors, compensates 80 percent of the previous year’s income. But it is still hard for all fishermen there.

Takashi reserved a hotel room for me, and we had a little party at the dining room of the hotel.

[The dinner party with Takashi,

[They served me a delicious soup,

I bought a nice sake from Sendai for him, but he said since he had daiabities he did not drink Japanese sake, but drank shochu.

I should buy Andong Shochu from Korea then.

The owner of the hotel joined our conversation. He welcomed sake, so I presented my “omiyage” to him.

Takashi said he would go fishing next morning. What he would catch would be used as samples of nuclear contamination test.

He said he would go fishing at 3 am next morning. His daughter came to pick him up at 8 pm. I slept at a small room upstairs at Takeshikan Hotel. It was my 4th and last night of this domestic travel to Hokuriku-Tohoku area.

[A view from the Tagajo Station,

[Mr. & Mrs. Barkman in front of their house in Tagajo,

[With Mr. Barkman at his house,

[The tsunami washed away the whole village along the coast,

[The provisional housing area in Shiogama,

[Ekiben named "Umino-kagayaki" or "Brightness of the sea",

[There are still about 3000 people missing,

[The dinner party with Takashi,

[The owner of the inn joined us, 宿の主人が会食に加わった、여관 주인이 회식에 참가했다]

130119 Kanazawa Castle(金沢城) and Sendai Castle(仙台城/青葉城)

Date: Jan. 19 (Sat), 2013

Travel Course: Kanazawa – Naoetsu – Echigoyuzawa – Omiya – Sendai

Partner: None

I got up at 5 am and took the spa on 14 F again. Then I had buffet style breakfast for nearly one hour.

After breakfast, I tried to visit Kanazawa Castle, but I went to the wrong direction. I went to JR Kanazawa Station.

There were many young people waiting for the bus to universities. It was the day of National Center Test for University Admissions.

[Students waiting for a bus in front of Kanazawa Station, JR金沢駅前でバスを待つ学生たち、JR 가나자와 역앞에서 버스를 기다리는 학생들,]

There was a unique monument of kettle near the bus center. There was also a unique stone post on which an interesting doll at the station.

[A unique monument of kettle near the bus center,

However, I noticed my mistake and returned to my hotel. After packing my things into my luggage, I tried to visit Kanazawa Castle again.

There was a big temple of Shinshu Otani denomination. Kanazawa Castle was built after Nobunaga destroyed Kaga-Buddhest Insurgence in 16th century. It seems that Buddhism tradition is still strong there.

[A temple of Shinshu Otami denomination (Buddhism),

There is a traditional market called “Oumicho Market” between the temple and the castle. I did window shopping at the market.

[The entrance of Oumicho Market,

[At Oumicho Market,

Then there was another Buddhest facility called “Otani Byosho” and the tumb of a monk called “Zonnyo.”

[The cemetery of "Zonnyo" a priest of Jodo-shinshu,

Passing the gate of this facility, I saw a hill covered with trees. It was a part of Kanazawa Castle.

Actually the main buildings of the castle were destroyed and the stonewallings have been preserved.

I tried to walk along the stonewalling course called “Nezumitamon Course” but it was closed only after about 10 meters from the entrance.

[The entrance of "Nezumitamon Course"、

[A part of stone wall at Kanazawa Castle,

I returned from the castle park to the hotel but on my way back, I visited Ozaki Shrine which was built in the early 16th century.

[At Ozaki Shrine,

It was a day of my travelling from Kanazawa to Senday, using Tokkyu (Limited Expres) and Joetsu and Tohoku Shinkansen.

First, I took the limited express “Hakutaka” from Kanazawa to Echigoyuzawa.

I bought “Ekiben” called “Tarameshi” or “Cod Lunch” at Naoetsu. It cost 1100 yen and very delicious.

[Ekiben Lunch Box called "Tarameshi" 『

The weather was cloudy, but when the train ran into “Hoku-hoku” Line, it began snowing heavily. I like seeing such while and black scenery through train windows.

“Hakutaka” arrived at Echigoyuzawa at 12:53. I changed train to Joetsu Shinkansen, “Max Toki.”

Max is a double decker and I took the first seat of the upper deck. After going through the tunnel, I came to the Pacific side of Japan.

The Pacific side was bright and clear, completely different from Japan Sea side.

I changed trains again at Omiya to Tohoku Shinkansen “Yamabiko”. Tohoku Shinkansen car is different from Max. It has a plug and bigger table for PC.

[Tohoku Shinkansen "Yamabiko" at Omiya,

I could see Tohoku mountains through the window while making documents with my computer in the car.

[The outside view from Yamabiko,

I arrived at Sendai at 3:33 pm. I could see my hotel“Daiwaroynet Hotel Sendai” from “Yamabiko” near Sendai Station. It was just in front of the Station. But the exit of the station was opposite side of the hotel. Actually it took me nearly 10 minutes to come out to the right side.

I had another trouble when I tried to check in. The clerk at the hotel told me that my credit card was not acceptable.

I called the credit company and found out that my credit card was set to use up to 200,000 yen a month. Oh, my God, I spent too much already after returning to Japan.

I payed the charge 7300 yen by cash and checked-in. When the clerk guided me to the elevator, I just told her that I prefer higher floor, she kindly changed my room from 3rd floor to 11th floor. She even upgraded my room from a single room to a double room.

[Inside of the room at“Daiwaroynet Hotel Sendai”,

In spite of the credit card trouble, I felt very satisfied, and went out to the city.

The clerk said it would be only 15 minutes from the bus center to Sendai Castle. So, I went to the bus center.

Actually it took 30 minutes from the bus center in front of Sendai Station to Sendai Castle.

When I arrived at Sendai Castle, it was already dark and I could see the lights of Sendai from the hill.

[TV Tower in Sendai from Sendai Castle、仙台城からみた夜のTV塔、센다이 성에서 본 밤의 TV 탑]

I could see two TV towers lighted up on the hill. They looked nice, but not many things to see in the dark.

[At the entrance of Sendai Castle,

[At Sendaijo at night,

I went back from the castle to the hotel, only spending 10 minutes or so. It was my 3rd day of Hokuriku-Tohoku Trip.

[Students waiting for a bus in front of Kanazawa Station, JR金沢駅前でバスを待つ学生たち、JR 가나자와 역앞에서 버스를 기다리는 학생들,]

[The unique mailbox at JR Kanazawa Station,

[West side of JR Kanazawa Station, JR金沢駅西口、JR 가나자와 역 서쪽 출구]

[A temple of Shinshu Otami denomination (Buddhism),

[At Oumicho Market,

[A cemetery of Otani denomination,

[A part of stone wall at Kanazawa Castle,

[At Ozaki Shrine,

[The outside view from "Hakutaka" on Hokuhoku Line,

[At the seat in Yamabiko,

[“Daiwaroynet Hotel Sendai”

[Two towers from Sendai Castle, 仙台城跡から見た2つのタワー、센다이 성터에서 본 2 개의 TV탑]

[At the entrance of Sendai Castle,

[At Sendaijo at night,
