100821 Mt.

August 21 (Sat) 2010,

Destination: Mt. Gamaksan (954m)

The mountain is located both Wonju-si (GangWonDo) and JaeChon (ChungBuk).

Weather: Fine

Companied by more than 40 AhToSan members including Bernardo (Mexican)

This hike was AhToSan’s 280th (George' 208th) plan.

We began hiking at 10 a.m. We walked along the stream in the valley. The trail from the stream to the ridge was very steep and hard.

It took an hour to reach the ridge. Then I offered 4 packs of grape and grape-tomatoes. They liked the fruits and ate them all at once.

The chairman (Alain Delon) offered the grape-tomatoes which he praivately grew. I enjoyed his makgeolli (Korean rice wine) very much.

Bernardo and I walked in the top hiker group. However, when we passed Tap-Bawui (Tower Rock,) we had to use ropes to climb up and down several times. When we realized, we were indeed the top of the whole group.

We heard somebody shout “Let’s have lunch!” but the place was not spacious enough for at least 10 people, so we kept walking until we found a spacous place after the 3rd Peak of Gamaksan.

We waited for the rest of the people, yet no boday came within 10 minutes. So we decided to have lunch there by ourselves.

When we finished our lunch, the top group hikers came to our place. So, we decided to walk with them.

When we arrived at “Sagori Ambu” which was the branch point of A couse and B course, it was already 2:30 p.m. We discussed wheather we should take A course or B course, most of us chose B course which was easier than A course. Bernardo and I followed the people who chose B course.

Soon after following B couse, we found a beautiful golden mushroom called “Mangte-posok.”The shape of the mushroom looks like the old Korean traditional frame pack called “Mangte.”Since Bernardo is a fan of mushrooms, he liked it very much.

When we came down along the stream, some of the members jumped into the river. They invited me to the water, yet I just washed my bare feet, and then hurried to the final goal. Bernardo joined them, so I was alone walking for about 30 minutes.

The map they gave me before the hike was quite precise, so I walked confidently although I did not know the way at all.

I found our bus near the big bridge. It was 3:45 p.m. Actually I was the first person to arrive at the bus. Then Bernardo came next to me. It was only he and I who came to the bus at the promised time, 4 p.m. All others came late, because they enjoyed bathing in the river.

We had Tippuri party under the bridge. They cooked “Pajeon” or Korean piza. They also provided “Tofu” and “Kimchi,” As for the biverage, they prepared “Sol-ip-ju” or “Pine-leave-wine” and “Makgeolli.” They tasted all good.

The last hike arrived at the bridge at 5 p.m. So we were rather late to leave the place. We came back to Expo South Gate at 8:30 p.m., yet I enjoyed the whole day.
