It was the 3rd day of the trip (Tohoku – Hokuriku – Kyoto). Kishu and I challenged one of 100 Famous Japanese Mountain, and also one of Three Spritual Japanese Mountain; Tateyama (立山).

Toyoko-Inn Hotel provides breakfast for free. When I went to the dinning room, there was a long line of guests waiting for the breakfast. So, I read a Japanese newspaper.
The headline saying “Mt. Ontake Eruption: 47 dead, the worst volcanic disaster after World War 2 period” made me chilly. Tateyama also consists of active volcanoes. (Later it was found that 58 dead and 6 missing as of August 2015).
Kishu picked me up at Toyoko-Inn and drove all the way to Tateyama Cable Station.

He parked his car at the parking lot and we took Tateyama Cable Car to “Bijodaira (美女平)”, then took a bus to “Murodo (室堂)” the starting point for the trekking.

Murodo is a kind of basecamp, similar to “Kamikochi” when people climb North Alps in Japan. The big difference is in case of Kamikochi, you will walk along Azusa River, but in case of Tateyama, you have to walk on the paved trails until “Ichinokoshi Lodge.”

The trail from Murodo to Ichinokoshi, the altitude difference is only 250m (2700 – 2450). So it was relatively easy hike.
But from Ichinokoshi Lodge to Oyama, it was really steep trail. It reminded me of Mt. Yari (Yarigatake槍ヶ岳) in North Alps.

While Kishu was taking “smoking break” at Ichinokoshi Lodge, I climbed the mountain first. Then it became cloudy and windy.

While I was walking in the middle of the slope, I could not see much because of the cloud. But when I came close to the summit, suddenly it became clear and I could see wonderful scenes of mountains and snowy gorges and glacial landform.

While I was waiting for Kishu at the shrine on the summit, I was happy to take pictures of the wonderful views. But when it blew really strong wind, my cap was almost blown away, and I caught it and put it into my bag.

There is a shrine on the summit, as one of the Three Spiritual Mountains in Japan. Climbers usually have to pay the entrance fee for the real summit of Mt. Oyama. But there was no fee for the gate that day.

Kishu and I took “confirmation pictures” at the small shrine on the real summit of Mt. Oyama. Then we walked beyond Mt. Oyama.

We had to walk on the ridge, and soon reached at the summit of Mt. Oonanji (大汝山3,015m). This summit is higher than Mt. Oyama (雄山3,003m), but not so many hikers climb Mt. Oonanji. There was no shrine on the summit, and there was a shabby wooden plate on the summit.

After taking the confirmation pictures, we went back to Mt. Oyama, and then we began descending the mountain.
While walking along the ridge from Mt. Oonaji to Mt. Oyama, I saw “Raicho (ライチョウ/雷鳥)” or “ rock ptarmigan” for the first time.

Kishu and I walked together from Ichinokoshi Lodge to Murodo. When we walked across the snowy gorge, we took pictures on the snow.

We returned to Murodo at 2:26 pm. While waiting for 2:50 pm bus, we dropped in a soba shop and ordered “Sansai soba” noodle.

On the way back to Bijodaira from Murodo, I got a window seat of the bus, therefore, I could take “Shomyo Waterfall” (300 meters of the difference of altitude) and Tateyama Sugi (Japanese cedar).

We came back to the parking lot at 4 pm. Kishu drove fast and he dropped me off before 5 pm.
Luckily I could take 17:11 “Thunder-bird” and I could arrive at Kyoto at around 20:00.

I took a taxi from Kyoto Station to Utano Youth Hostel (2,990 yen) in Kyoto where I got a reservation for a night.

いよいよ日本三霊山の１つであり、百名山の１つでもある立山登山の日。
東横インの朝飯は７時からで食堂には長い行列。待ち時間に読売新聞を読んだ。
9月27日の御嶽山噴火による死者数は47人と戦後最悪の噴火事故となった。水蒸気爆発による噴火のため予測ができず、噴火警戒レベルが(2015年8月現在、死者58名、行方不明者6名)
さて、砂田氏は7:15にホテル着。7:20にはホテルをチェックアウトをして立山へ向かった。
車を駐車場に停め、立山のケーブルは9時ジャストに乗った。室堂までのケーブルとバスの往復料金は4310円だった。

勾配度25度というケープルに7分間乗り美女平へ。そこから高原バスに乗り換えて室堂へ向かった。室堂着は10時ごろ。

この日は昼ごろまでは快晴で、高原の紅葉はすばらしかった。バスは一番後部座席で、窓際。ただし、みものの立山杉や300mの滝とは反対側でちょっと残念だった。

室堂でバスから下車したあたりから雲が出てきたが、ここは北アルプスで言えば上高地に当たる。
立山連峰や飛騨山脈、中部山岳の山々が展望できる素晴らしいところだ。特にこれから登る立山連峰と雪渓が美しく、高山植物の宝庫でもある。
室堂(2450m)から標高2700mの一の越ロッジまでは緩やかな舗装された登山道を急いだ。

一の越からは槍の穂のような岩山を登ることになる。喜修が一の越で休んでいる間に、先を歩いたが、ガスが濃くなり、見通しは悪い。

立山の雄山山頂へ登る中間でも喜修は追いつかない。彼はおそらくタバコ休憩か。
中間から山頂まで一気に登るとたいへんな強風で、しかし、雲は時々切れる。すると眼下に雄大なカール地形と紅葉が目に入る。

山頂神社で麓で買った握り飯を1個と東横インの朝ごはんのときのパン2個を食べて喜修を待った。
東横インのルームサービスの梅茶もうまい。これを飲んでるうちに砂田氏が追いついた。

雄山山頂で認証写真を撮っている時にあまりの強風で帽子が飛ばされた。なんとか崖下へ落ちる前に捕まえてリュックに結んだ。

その後、雄山の反対側の尾根を進み、大汝山山頂の標高3,015m地点まで行って認証写真を撮り、雄山へと引き返した。

この時、雄山神社の手前でかわいいライチョウ2羽を見つけた。ちょこちょこと歩いて可愛らしい。

この間、立山の尾根歩き中、時々雲が晴れて良い写真が撮れた。くだりは上りに比べ登山道もわかりやすく安全だ。砂田氏の先を下り、一の越ロッジで彼を待った。

このころ空はすっかり雲に覆われたが雨はない。一の越から室堂までの復路は砂田氏といっしょに歩いた。

室堂についたのは2:26で2:20のバスが出たばかりだった。次のバスは3時だったので、室堂名物の山菜そば(豚肉入り)を食べて、バス乗り場へもどると長蛇の列。３時とは言わずに2:50の臨時バスが出て、ラッキーなことに一番前の席に座れた。

今度は剣山の写真も落差300mと言われる称名滝の写真も、立山杉の写真も撮ることができた。バスは４時前に美女平へ到着。

ケーブルカーがすぐに出たので、駐車場には４時に戻った。帰りのトラヒックは意外とすいていて、富山駅には５時前に着いた。
喜修には本当に感謝である。また、ラッキーなことに17:11発のサンダーバード号に乗れた。京都駅に着いたのは20時ごろで、駅前からこの日の宿泊予定地であるYMCAまでタクシーを使った。
タクシー代は2990円でこれはちょっとふところに痛かった。宇多野ユースホステルは朝食付きで4000円で、6人ベッドの相部屋。この日は私を含めて3人の宿泊だった。
ロビーには外国人が多く、WiFiが使えるようだった。
