Bushfires raging in Australia since last September caused catastrophic damages to the nature, people and all living creatures here. Burned down forests are over 180,000㎢ as of January 14, 2020. It’s more than twice of Hokkaido (83,000㎢).

Now we got plenty of rain since Friday, February 7. In Sydney, nearly 400 mm, and it’s about one third of annual precipitation.
However, too much rain caused floods and landslides. Blue Mountains Line trains terminate at Springwood since February 9 due to the landslide happened between Leura and Katoomba.
Now substitute bus service connects each station from Springwood. (Springwood is about 70 km west of Sydney and middle of Blue Mountains Line).
Good about this substitute bus service is that it is free of charge for anyone. Even if you go from Springwood to the end of the line, Mount Victoria.
As for me, I never had gone to Mount Victoria, it’s two stops far from Katoomba. I began to visit Mount Victoria this year. It was my 7th visit of Mount Victoria since the 2nd week of January. So, I’d like to introduce the trekking in Mount Victoria.
There are two trekking centers in Mount Victoria: Pulpit Rock and Mount Piddington. Pulpit Rock is about 1.4 km and Mount Piddington is about 2 km distance.
Both centers are on the same directions for about the middle of their ways. After getting of at the station, you turn to left for about 30 m, then you come to Great Western Highway (GWH). Then turn right and go along GWH for about another 30 m, you will see the indication pointing the directions of Mount Piddington and Pulpit Rock. Soon you come to the fork point of two directions.
If you turn right, then you come to Pulpit rock, and if you go straight, you will reach at Mount Puddington via “One Three Hill”(the highest point of the city of Blue Mountains: 3,645 feet or 1110.996m).
There is “Pulpit Rock Lookout” in Blackheath, but this Pulpit Rock Lookout is much smaller than that in Blackheath. It has stick-out part of the rock upon a bigger rock.
There is a nice map near the Pulpit Rock. It shows flat map of tracks and lookouts and section views of the valley.
There are only two tracks from Pulpit Rock; “A Little Zigzag Circuit Tack” and “Rienits Pass to Mount Piddington via Witches Glen.”
The entrance of Little Zigzag Track is about 100 m down from the map. You can see the sign of entrance. Then he track leads to down by literally zigzag. Then you have to go up the track called “Rienits Track” and steep up trail.
If you go up this steep track, then you come to the undercliff pass called “Rienits Pass.” If you turn left to Pulpit Rock side, then you complete the circuit of 90 minutes. If you turn right, then you reach to Mount Puddington Lookout via Witches Glen, that is the 2nd track as mentioned above.
Mount Piddington Lookout is a small hill accessible by car. There are benches and tables and even a toilet. Around the lookout is a paved road, and there are 5 tracks including the one to Pulpit Rock Lookout.
These tracks are in radial fashion. Rightest track leads to Pulpit Rock, then the next track leads to Hornes Point.
There is a map which shows every track. Actually, I walked each track by referring this map.
The 4th track goes to Coxs Cave, then it goes to Fairy Bower, but the signs says this trail is closed due to bridge failure.
When I saw the bridge, it did look very old, yet I followed someone who crossed this bridge. I did it carefully though.
It was Feb. 14, after heavy rain, and many parts of trails were like rivers and difficult to walk. Anyhow I completed my trekking without any accident.
There are no shopping mall in front to Mount Victoria Station, There are some eatery, café, and a hotel on the right side of the road to Great West Highway.
There is an interesting, unique park called Park Imperial Museum on the right side of the same road. There is a nice toilet facility and some benches and tables.
There is a nice local museum next to Mount Victoria Station. You can see historical and natural exhibitions by the cost of A$ 5.
If you have plenty of time for waiting next train, you may find a lot of interesting things there.

SR #20号「ブッシュ・ファイア収束」および「マウント・ビクトリアのトレッキング」
昨年9月から続いているオーストラリアの森林火災は地球規模の災害となって今日に至った。2020年1月14日時点の類焼面積は18万6000平方キロメートルで北海道(8.3万㎢)の2倍以上になる。
火災による焼失建築物は5900棟以上(住宅2,779棟含む)で死者は34人、既に哺乳類、鳥類、爬虫類など10億以上の動物の生命が失われたと推定されている。(出典wikipedea).
しかし、２月上旬になって待望の大雨、それも30年ぶりの大雨が被害の甚大だったNSW州など東南部に降り、2/3以上の森林火災が収まった。ただし、この地域には洪水被害も報告されている。
私が週3回訪れるブルーマウンテン地域ではその中心地のカトゥンバ駅近くで土砂崩れが発生し、線路を支える土砂が流され、現在、ブルーマウンテン線はスプリングウッド止まりで、その先は代替バスの運行となっている。
代替バスの運行で驚くことは、これが完全無料サービスであるということだ。シドニー中心部のセントラル駅からスプリングウッド駅まで電車で80分。ここからブルーマウンテントレッキングの中心であるカトゥンバ駅までの1時間はもちろん、さらに3駅先のマウント・ビクトリアまでも無料である。
私は昨年まで、ブルーマウンテン線はカトゥンバの2つ先のブラックヒースまでしか行ったことはなかった。
今年になって初めて、大部分のブルーマウンテン列車の終着駅であるマウント・ビクトリアへ行くようになった。今週で7週間連続してマウント・ビクトリアのトレッキングを実行しているのでこの紹介をしたい。
マウント・ビクトリアのトレッキング拠点は2か所あって、１つはパルピットロックで駅から1.4km、もう一つはマウント・ピッディングトンで駅から約2km離れている。
どちらも駅を下車して駅前の道路を左折、30mほど行くとGreat Western Highwayにぶつかり、そこを右折してGWH沿いにまた30ｍほど進むと左折の標識があり、標識に従って進めばパルピット・ロックとマウント・ピッディングトンの分岐点に出る。
分岐点を右折すればパルピット・ロックであり直進すればブルーマウンテン最高地点(3,645フィート/1,110.996m)である「ワン・スリー・ヒル」を経由してマウント・ピッディングトンである。
パルピット・ロックはブラックヒースにも同じ名称のルックアウトがあるがこれに比べればかなり小規模で岩の上に突起のある岩に過ぎない。
パルピット・ロックの手前にわかりやすい地図があり、トレッキング・コースの平面図と渓谷の断面図、およびトレッキングの所要時間が示してある。
この図に従えば、ここからのトラックは２つしかない。一つはリトル・ジグザグ・トラックであり、もう一つはレイニッツ・パスとウィッチズ・グレンを経由してマウント・ピッディングトンへ至る道である。
リトル・ジグザグ・トラックは、パルピット・ロックの手前の道を約100ｍ直進してから標識に従ってトラックに入る。それは文字通りジグザグのつづら折り道の下り道である。
そこを下ってからリエニッツ・トラックと呼ばれる急坂を上ると、マウント・プディングトンへ続く崖沿いのリエニッツ・パスに出る。
ここをパルピット・ロック側に進めば元へもどるサーキットとなり、マウント・ピッディングトン側へ進めば、ウィッチズ・グレンを経由してマウント・ピッディングトンへ至る第2のトラックとなる。
マウント・ピッディングトンは小高い丘のルックアウトであり、休憩用のテーブルやトイレもある。舗装道路でアクセス可能なので車で来て、ここに止めてトレッキングをしてもよい。
マウント・ピッディングトンはロータリーになっていて、このロータリーに沿って5つのトラックが放射状に出ている。右側からパルピット・ロックに続く道と、ホーネスポイントへの道などである。
こちらにもわかりやすい地図があるので、これを見ながらトレッキングできる。実際、私もこの地図をみながら、トラックをひとつづつ回ってみた。 この地図で右から4本目のコックス・ケーブはフェアリ・バウアに続いているが途中の木製の橋が老朽化のため通行不可という表示があった。 実は先週、この老朽化した木製の橋を注意深く渡って、フェアリ・バウアに抜ける道を歩いた。
この橋の部分さえ気を付ければあとは問題のないトラックだった。ただし、先週は雨の後で、トラックが小川のようになっていてその点では歩行がやや困難であった。
マウント・ビクトリアの駅前に店は皆無で、ＧＷＨに出るまでの道路の右側に数件カフェやイータリーがある。
また、GWHと交わる道路の右側(数店の店の裏側)に風変わりな公園(Park Imperial Museum)があり、立派なベンチやトイレも完備している。
また、マウント・ビクトリア駅に隣接してローカル・ミュージアムがあり、歴史・生物博物館のようになっている。
列車の本数が少ないので、時間に余裕があるときは訪問してみるのも一興である。
