121231 Snow Monkey in Jigokudani「

Travel Date: Dec. 31, 2012 (Mon) Cloudy after fine

Destination: Jigokudani (Hell Valley) in Nagano Prefecture, Japan

Course: Tokyo - (Shinkansen) – Nagano - (Bus) - Kanbayashi Onsen - (Walk) – Jigokudani (Korakukan Inn) Partner: Kikko and Tracey

We took non-reserved seats of Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano. We all could get seats.

It took 1 hour and 45 minutes from Tokyo to Nagano by Shinkansen (7450 yen).

We took 14:40 bus from East exit of Nagano Station to Kanbayashi Onsen, arriving at 15:21 (1250 yen.)

The distance from the bus-stop to Korakukan in Jigokudani is about 2 km. It was mostly frozen icy trail, no taxi available.

Since my wife had backache, I was afraid that it was a bit too hard for her. But she could manage to walk well.

Tracey brought climbing irons and she put them under hiking boots. She walked carefully so it took almost one hour from the bus stop to the inn.

There were 5 passengers got off at the bus stop. Besides us, a foreign couple got off at the same bus stop.

We soon began talking each other. They were an Australian couple, Rod and Robyn. They were to stay at the same inn as ours.

When we came close to the inn, we noticed that some monkeys here and there along the river.

After checking in, I was ready to visit Monkey Park first. So, I went out of the inn and waited for Tracey and Kikko.

Soon I noticed there were many wild monkeys around the inn. So I began to take pictures.

While I was taking pictures, my wife and Tracey went to Monkey Park from the other side of exit, while I was waiting for them at the main gate.

Therefore, we missed each other, and they visited Monkey Park where mother monkeys and baby monkeys taking spa!

When I went to Monkey Park alone, it was too late. All monkeys finished taking spa and gone to the mountains.

I decided to visit Monkey next day and we went to have dinner at the inn.

The dinner was nice and we ordered beer for the dinner. Rod and Robyn sat close to our seats. They were having Japanese sake.

We drank together, and exchanged more information about each other.

Their daughter is an English teacher in China. So they visited their daughter in China. On their way back to Australia, they visited Japan.

We felt good and wanted to talk more. So we invited Rod and Robyn to our room. On our way to go to our room, we met an interesting Japanese youth who spoke English.

His name is Hiroshi. Hiroshi was staying with two of his friends. So I invited them all to our room.

The three youth came from Kansai area. One of them was practicing Budhist sutra. Acturally he performed “sutra” chanting!

We felt like we were all friends. I invited them to climb Korean mountains with AhToSan in Korea.

Kikko, Tracey
