140606 Memorial Service for Mr. Walter #3 (Drive from Seattle to Vancouver)

Visiting Places: Craig’s mother, Facilities for the old people(2), Paul and Dabie’s home

Accomodation: Paul and Dabie’s home in Vancouver

We had a simple breakfast and left at 9 am at Craig & Lois’ home in Seattle.

On the way to Vancouver, we had a short break at a rest area, then arrived at Craig’s mother’s home at 12:00, noon.

Craig’s mother is fine and strong. She prepared sandwiches with beef and turkey and prenty of vegetable.

She keeps her garden pretty and beautiful. We enjoyed the meal and had casual conversation and left her home a few mitues before 2 pm.

Then we visited a private elderly care facility which one of Lois’s cousins operates. When we visited the facility, her cousin was mowing the lawn.

They chatted over the fence. Then we went into the house.

One of the inhabitants was Craig’s aunt, Audrey. She used to work for Ma-Bell as an telephone operator.

When I visited the main land USA for the first time in 1975, I met her in Portland, Oregon.

She visited Japan in late 1970s or early 1980s. She clearly remembered “Ofuna” where her brother, Mr. Walter was working then.

I remembered Audrey, because she was working for the telephone company in USA, while I was working NTT in Japan.

Wow, it was over 30 years ago! She was thankful for the telephone company and our Lord for having good pension. She must be about 90 years old.

She showed us her private room. It was cozy and nice room.

Then we visited Eileen, the wife of Mr. Walter. I got a letter from Mr. & Mrs. Walter early this year. We visited the facility which they moved and then her husband was called to heaven.

She showed her room. It looked like a nice hotel room with sofa and table.

After having chatting among us, we all left the facility for Paul and Debbie’s house for dinner.

On the way we dropped in a big outlet where Eileen bought some accessories. Lois introduced me as a visitor from Japan for Mr. Walter’s memorial service. Then the clerk said “Get out!” I was very much surprised.

She meant “It’s unbelievable!” or “Incredible!” Wow, I did not know that.

When we visited Paul and Debbie’s house, they welcomed us very much. They had prepared a big dinner, and we all enjoyed that.

Paul and Debbie have grandchildren. They compiled a picture book for their grandparents. It was very nice.

We talked about good old days, and it seemed never ending.

Craig and Lois lefter Paul and Debbie’s house with Eileen at around 11 pm and I stayed overnight at Paul and Debbie’s house.

朝食は簡単に済ませ、9時過ぎにロイスとクレイグの家を出発しバンクーバーへ向かった。

途中、紫色のツツジがきれいなレストエリアで小休止し、クレイグのお母さんが現在一人で住んでいる、クレイグの生家に12時過ぎに到着した。

クレイグのお母さんはたいへん元気で一人暮らしだ。ビーフや七面鳥の肉をメインに野菜を豊富に準備したサンドウィッチを出してくれた。

表庭も裏庭もきれいで家の中の装飾もシンプルかつきれいだ。ゆったりと話をして2時少し前にこの家を出発した。

2時40分ごろ、ロイスの従兄弟が経営する老人ホームに向かった。ここにはクレイグの叔母でかつてマーベルでオペレーターをしていたオードリーともう一人の叔母に会った。

従兄弟は庭の手入れをしていて、我々が到着すると側面の庭側から玄関へきてやや長い立ち話をしたが、作業を完全に止めて座り込むことはしなかった。

オードリーは私が初めてアメリカ本土を訪問した1975年にクレイグたちが住んでいたトレーラーハウスのすぐそばに住んでいたと言うのでその時初めて会った気がする。

その後、日本も訪問し、大船という地名を覚えているので、数回会っているかもしれない。古き良き時代のマ・ベルの話を共有した。

彼女は1982年に退職したといい、今では考えられないほど十分に年金もいただいたという。

このホームを退出する前に自分の部屋を案内してくれた。この老人ホームは3時半ごろ退出し、次はアイリーンの入居しているさらに大きなホームを訪問した。

玄関に到着した時間は3時４3分なので非常に近い。玄関ロビーには正面にご老人たちがずらっと並んで正面をみていたが、アイリーンは入口すぐ近くの右横のソファで知人と話をしていた。

ウォルターさんが健在の時は夫婦用の広い部屋だったが、現在は一人用の部屋へ移ったそうで、それでもこじんまりとして良いスペースのある部屋だったが、昨年会った時にくらべてずっと元気がなくなったような感じがした。

アイリーンの部屋でしばらく話をして、4時15分ごろこのホームをアイリーンと共に退出した。

次にポールとデビーのホームに向かったが、途中、ショッピングセンターへ立ち寄り、アイリーンのジュエリーを購入。

ロイスが店員にジョージがメモリアルサービスに参加するために日本から来たと言ったら、店員が『それはすごい』という意味で『Get out!』と言ったのにはおどろいた。 語調や表情から、まさか『出て行け』という意味でないことは推測できたが、それにしても面白い表現だ。

ポールとデビーのホームには16:43に到着しているので非常に近い。到着するとすぐに家の中から多くの家財道具をクレイグの車に運び込んだが、それはウォルター先生の家から写した多くの遺品の「形見分け」であったようだ。

主に私が案内された寝室から運んだので、それが済まなければ私の寝るスペースができないというわけだ。

この日の夕食は串刺しバーベキューをメインにしたサラダやイチゴやストロベリーなどで、デザートもおいしくてついつい食べすぎる。

食後は居間で様々な話題の話をして、特に私の禁食修道会やクリスチャンになった切っ掛けなどの話をした。

ロイスとクレイグはアイリーンのホームへ行き、私はポールとデビーを相手にさらに1時間ほど話し込み、11時過ぎに寝た。
