Paul, a son of Mr. & Mrs. Walter and his wife, Debbie were renting a house near the facility in which his parents had been living in Vancouver, Washington. So that they could take care of his parents.
I stayed at their home, and waited for Eileen, Craig and Lois to join us. We had a bit late breakfast at around 10 am, and left for Portland at around noon.

[I read messages from churches in Japan, 日本の教会からのメッセージを紹介した、일본 교회의 메시지를 소개했다,]
I met Mr. & Mrs. Walter in 1973 for the first time. I was studying English hard, and was introduced English Bible Class (EBC) via Prof. Itoh, whom I met at Fujisawa English Club (FEC).
I attended both FEC and EBC meetings earnestly, and succeeded to enter intra-company college in 1975.
That year, Mr. & Mrs. Water went back to the States to visit supporters around the country. While they were away, I was invited to attend a special gospel meeting, and realized the necessity of accepting Jesus as my personal savior. I got baptized that year.
Then I visited Mr. & Mrs. Walter during the summer vacation, and they took me 3 churches a day on Sunday. I saw Lois and Craig there for the first time.
When I graduated from the company college, they urged me to find a place for Sunday services in Ofuna. That was the start of Shonan Nozomi Christ Church (SNCC).
We rented a room at Shonan English College in Ofuna for couple of years, then moved to a couple of places in Ofuna (Tamanawadai), and Sakae-ku (Hongodai), Yokohama and finally came back to Ofuna in 2000.
Mr. & Mrs. Walter had been working for the Lord in Japan since 1950s. The details of their work you can read his autobiography “The Unseen Hand.”
They left Japan in late 1980s, leaving SNCC for Mr. & Mrs, Jensen, then Mr. & Mrs. Barkman took over, and finally succeeded for inviting a Japanese Pastor, and at the same time, succeeded to obtain our won asset, the building and the land in Ofuna.
SNCC has its 3rd Japanese Pastor Murakami now. We will soon selebrate our 40th anniversary in a couple of years. We all thank God and the founder, the late Mr. Donald A. Walter.

1. Message from Shonan Christ Church in Tsujido by Pastor Furuya.
May peace and grace of our Lord on Ms. Eileen Walter and her families.
“Christ” Luke 24:46-47 As it is written in Luke 24:46-47, the Gospel reached at Tsujido Higashikaigan, Fujisawa shi, Japan.
Our Lord sent Mr. & Mrs. Walter as the messengers of the gospel about half a century ago.
Shonan Christ Church celebrated its 50th anniversary on May 16 when Mr. & Mrs. Walter and Pastor Furuta & Shizuko held the first meeting 50 years ago.
I heard how Mr. & Mrs. Walter loved the church from many people. We know that they had been praying for us even after returning to USA, and how they were glad to know the growth of our church.
When Mr. & Mrs. Walter visited our church last time, (it was 10 years ago, on June 3rd, 2004), they stayed at Kochoen where we bit a due.
Now we built our new church building on the land where Kochoen used to be. The new building is as three time larger than our old building.
I am sure that Mr. Walter must have been glad to see the new church building. Yet he must be glad to see from the heaven.
We will promote the work of God with the love Mr. Walter showed us on this world.
Psalm 145:17 "The Lord is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does."
May the support from God be on Ms. Eileen Walter and her family now, tomorrow and for ever.

2. Message from SNCC (Shonan Nozomi Christ Church) by Tomoyuki Tachibana
On behalf of SNCC, I will send my best regards to Mr. Donald A. Walter who went home in heaven.
Mr. Walter and Mrs. Eileen Walter, thank you for giving birth of our church and grew us up.
SNCC was born 38 years ago in Ofuna, and we still have services and meetings there.
We started our meeting at the Suzukis, then at Shonan English College. We held services on the 2nd floor of the building from which we could see Ofuna Kannon every Sunday.
We enjoyed the services and English classes at Tamawawadai, too. New believers joined us little by little. “The Unseen Hand” led new members to us year after year.
I heard that Eileen had been looking forward to seeing her husband in the heaven. We, too, look forward to seeing you in the heaven.
May the protect and lead by God on Eileen, Lois and Craig, and all our brothers and sisters in USA for ever.

3. Message from Hananoki Christ Church by Pastor Michio Itoh and Ms. Kiyo Itoh
We heard about Mr. Donald A. Walter’s departure to the heaven from Ms. Shizuko Furuta on May 4th. We were filled with regret that we could not see him on this world any more.
We wished to visit Vancouver while he was fine, but my deteriorated health prevented our wish and we really regret that.
We are now reading your book, thinking of your work in Japan, again.
We thank you very much for being good to our whole family. The mission works began by both of you and together with Mr. & Mrs. Swanson are now expanding in the area of Shonan, in Japan.
On the land where Kochoen used to be, the new building of Shonan Christ Church would soon be completed. Thinking of this work, we recall the works you started here in Shonan, and we are filled with gratitude very much.
Please send our best regards to Ms. Eileen Walter. Although we could not join the ceremony, our hearts and thoughts are with you in Japan through our prayers.

As soon as I heard from Oyama san that Walter Sensei had died, one thought came to me. “Banzai, Walter Sensei! Now you have been with The Lord!”
Death may have virtually destroyed you (your body) . However, we know that you have overcome it. Because the Bible says, " Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?...But thanks to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
I thank The Lord that He let me meet Mr. & Mrs. Walter. If they had not lived in Chigasaki, Kiyo Sensei did not marry Michio Sensei. If they had not married, our SLCC did not exist now.
So I thank Mr. & Mrs. Walter so much as one of SLCC members.
God's comfort may abundantly be on the bereaved family and all the people who know Walter Sensei!

5. Message from Katsunari Hayashi (Once a member of SNCC) This is a message to late Mr. Walter, Walter sensei for me!
It is with regret that I have just heard of the passing of Walter sensei.
It is him who told me of ‘value system’ in life.
It is him who always said it is important to get a Christian wife.
It is him who said ‘Kats, you are unique, and that is good. It is good to have a unique idea and sometimes do differently from others.’
I met him and Mrs. Walter at age of 18, so I have known them for more than 30 years.
Value in life, it is a key where I find the value in life. Value is, I can say now, in the Lord and in the Words. I have paid attention to it, and I have got Christian
wife according to his advice, which has been so good also.
And, when he says you are unique, it was always an encouragement word for me.
His loss is a shock for my family, me and Emiko and Aika.
His all-time closeness to the Lord and friendliness to us will be missed.

In Japan, we have “Koden” or condolence money for a funeral, but there in America, there is a custom that a person who could not come to the ceremony, but he or she would pay for the cost of dinner for the the bereaved family.

この日は、私が今回訪米したその目的の日で、私の恩人、ドナルド・ウォルター先生のメモリアル・デーがポートランドのJIBCで開催される日である。
前夜泊まったウォルター先生の息子、ポールとその奥さんのデビーの家は幹線道路が近く、車の音がかなり耳につくが眠れないほどではない。気温が低いので気持ち良く眠れた。
彼らの家はオレゴン州、ポートランドだが、ご両親のお世話がしやすいように、両親が入居した施設のそばに借家したのである。
朝食はクレイグたちの来訪を待って10時ごろいただき、12時過ぎに車２台でポートランドへ出発した。

以下は私のスピーチの日本語版である。
「ウォルター先生ご夫妻と初めてお会いしたのは、1973年、当時熱心に英語を学んでいた私は、藤沢英語会で知り合った伊東先生のご紹介で、神奈川県辻堂の湘南キリスト教会でご夫妻が主宰されていたバイブルクラスに出席した時でした。
藤沢英語会もバイブルクラスもどちらも熱心に出席していましたが、1975年に湘南キリスト教会の特別伝道会に招かれ、そこでイエス・キリストを私の救い主として受け入れる決心をしました。
私がイエス・キリストを救い主として受け入れ、クリスチャンになろうとした理由は主に2つあります。1つは自分が自力では救われえない罪人であるということを認めたこと。もう1つは、目に見えるクリスチャン像として、ウォルター先生ご夫妻のすばらしい人柄にひかれたことです。
私は横須賀の工業高校を卒業してすぐ、現在のNTTグループ、当時の電電公社に入社しました。当時の電電公社には組織内教育制度として大学部と言うものがあり、年に1度の試験に合格すれば2年間、職場を離れ、東京の全寮制の大学施設で大学教育を受けることができました。
私はこの試験に合格すべく、試験科目である英語・数学・日本語を熱心に学んでいましたが、一般大学を卒業して電電公社に入社した社員も受験できるため、工業高校卒の私にはかなり高いハードルでした。
受洗したことと、この試験に合格したことは直接の関係はないにしろ、私にとっては大きな恵でした。大学部に合格して2年間の学生生活が送れることになった1975年の夏休み、私は初めての米国旅行として帰国中であったご夫妻を訪ねることにしました。
はじめての訪米では、帰国中であったウォルター先生のみならず、お嬢様であるロイスさんや、当時婚約中であったクレイグさんにもお会いしました。また、オレゴン州で過ごした日曜日には、ご夫妻と共に一日に３つの教会を訪れ、救いの証しをつたない英語でしたことを覚えています。
その後、神奈川県鎌倉市の自宅に先生ご夫妻をお呼びし、我が家で英語のバイブル・スタディを数年間開催しました。
そして1977年4月に大学部を卒業すると共に、神奈川県鎌倉市の大船駅の近くに、当時妻が英語クラスに使っていた湘南イングリッシュカレッジの二階の一室を借りて、湘南のぞみキリスト教会の集会を毎週日曜日に持つようになりました。
湘南のぞみキリスト教会は、辻堂の湘南キリスト教会の株分けとしてウォルター先生ご夫妻が日本で最後に開拓された教会であると認識しております。
湘南のぞみキリスト教会のその後の歩みは、鎌倉市玉縄台の借家への移動をはじめとして、大船に接した横浜市の本郷台で3カ所の変遷を経て、その後、大船駅のそばの丘の上へ移転して、土地建物も借家ではなく教会の所有として現在に至っています。
湘南のぞみキリスト教会の牧会は、ウォルター先生ご夫妻の定年に伴うご帰国のあと、1980年代後半にはジェンセン先生ご夫妻の1年間のご奉仕の後、現在も日本の東北の地で活躍されているバークマン先生ご夫妻に引き継がれました。
湘南のぞみキリスト教会は、本郷台で2回目の引越しの後、バークマン先生の時代に、まず念願であった日本人牧師の招聘に成功し、また、土地・物件の購入にも成功しました。
その後、現在の場所に移転して、日本人牧師も初代の伊藤先生から山中先生に引き継がれ、昨年1年間の無牧時代を経て、今年の2月からは三代目の村上先生ご夫妻が専任牧師となられています。
私はちょうど現在の教会堂が大船駅の近くの丘の上に建てられた11年前、NTTの早期退職制度を利用して韓国へ渡り、韓国で2つの職業を経験した後、今年の4月1日に帰国しました。
帰国一年前の昨年2月、韓国での仕事があと1年ということが明らかになった最後の冬休みを利用して、米国の友人たちを訪ねてこようという気持ちが起きました。
私の友人・恩人で当時米国に住んでおられた方々は、テネシー州、ニューヨーク州、マサチュセッツ州、そしてワシントン州とオレゴン州に住んでいました。
この順にバスキングリッジ、ニューヨーク、ボストン、シアトル、そしてポートランドを訪問したわけですが、この最後のポートランドでお訪ねしたのはウォルター先生ご夫妻のお宅と、ご長男のポールさんとデビーさんでした。
この時、ウォルター先生は私を先生の書斎に招いてくださり、窓からきれいな夕陽を眺め、『主は私によくして下さった』と繰り返しつぶやいておられたことが印象深いです。
わたしたちクリスチャンに約束されているイエス様のもとでの再会を期待しつつ、40年の長きにわたって私と私の家族を愛してくださったウォルター先生にもう一度感謝をささげます。」

湘南キリスト教会及び湘南のぞみキリスト教会の日本語の原稿はそのまま日本語で読んだ。原稿は下記の通りである。

アイリーン夫人とご家族の上に、また主にある皆様の上に主の恵みと平安がありますように。
「キリストは苦しみを受け、三日目に死人の中からよみがえり、その名によって、罪の赦しを得させる悔い改めが、エルサレムから始まってあらゆる国の人々に宣べ伝えられる。」（ルカ 24:46-47）
この御言葉の通り、日本という国の藤沢市のさらにこの辻堂東海岸の地にも、罪の赦しを得させる悔い改めが宣べ伝えられました。主がこの地を御心に留めてくださり、福音を持ち運ぶ使者としてウォルター先生ご夫妻をお遣わしくださったのです。
古田牧師夫妻と協力して始めた、第一回目の集会から今年の5月16日で丁度50年が経ちました。湘南キリスト教会の礎となったその尊い働きに感謝しています。
ウォルター先生が如何に教会を愛してくださったかは、今も人々の口から聞くことができます。帰国後も私たちのことをいつも祈りに覚えてくださり、教会の成長等を聞いて喜んでくださっていたことを伺っています。
先生が最後に湘南キリスト教会を訪問されたのは10年前の2004年6月3日です。その際、先生ご夫妻が宿泊された場所、最後に先生と別れた場所に新会堂が今月20日に完成します（現在の3倍の広さの土地に）。
この建物の完成した写真を見たらまた喜んでくださっただろうと思わされます。しかし、もちろん先生は主の御もとにあって喜んでくださるでしょう。
ウォルター先生が示してくださった主の愛をもって、私たちも人々を愛し、主の御業を推し進めたいと願っています。
「主はご自分のすべての道において正しく、またすべてのみわざにおいて恵み深い。」（詩篇145:17）
アイリーン夫人の上に、ご家族の上に、主の支えが今も明日もその後も、いつまでもありますよう祈ります。

2. 湘南のぞみキリスト教会(SNCC)よりby 立花知之
湘南のぞみキリスト教会を代表して、天国に凱旋されたD・ウォルター先生に、ごあいさつ申し上げます。D・ウォルター先生、そしてアイリーンさん。私たちのSNCCを産み育てて下さって、本当に、本当にありがとうございます。
大船の地で、38年前に誕生したSNCCは、今も変わらず礼拝が主に捧げられています。
鈴木泰次兄の家庭集会から始まり、湘南イングリッシュカレッジの２階では、あの大船観音を正面から見据えて、礼拝を守りましたね。
玉縄台での礼拝や英語クラスも、とても楽しかったです。そして、いつも主の見えざる手が、新しい信仰者を仲間に加えて下さいました。
アイリーンさんが、D・ウォルター先生に再び天国で会えることを待ち遠しく思っていることをお聞きして、私たちもとても励まされています。
きっと、私たちも、天国でご一緒出来ると信じています。イエス・キリストの守りと導きとが、アイリーンさん、ロイスさん、クレイグ先生、そして信仰でつながる米国の兄弟姉妹の方々の上に、世々限りなくありますように。

3. 花の木キリスト教会より by 伊東道夫＆喜代
5月4日(日)に、古田静子さんより、ドナルド･ウォルター先生が天に召されたことをお聞きしました。宣教師として、日本のために生涯をささげられた先生の召天のお知らせをきいて、もう、この地上においてはお会いできないことを思うとさびしい気持ちでいっぱいになりました。
一度、お元気なうちに、バンクーバーにお尋ねしたいと願いつつも、私もからだを弱くし、実現できなかったことを残念に思っています。ウォルター先生の日本での働きについて、書いてくださった本をもう一度読み返しています。
家族ぐるみ、大変お世話になり有難うございました。ウォルター先生ご夫妻とスワンソン先生ご夫妻によってなされた主の働きは、今も日本の湘南の地を中心に拡大しています。
めぐみ胡蝶園のあったところには、湘南キリスト教会の新しい会堂がまもなく完成します。また、湘南ライフタウンキリスト教会も新しい広い土地に新会堂建設が始まっています。これらのことを思うとき、ウォルター先生ご夫妻がなさった尊い働きを思い、感謝の思いでいっぱいです。
アイリーン・ウォルター先生にも、よろしくお伝えください。ご葬儀には伺えませんが、日本の地においてお祈りしております。
