It was Sunday, so I took them to my church in Ofuna; Shonan Nozomi Christ Church for the Sunday Morning Service.

Marta and BJ are members of Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Although my church is a Protestant church, they agreed to join the service.

They cannot understand Japanese, but BJ can read Hiragana, so he could sing hymns with Japanese members.
The service was over at 11 am. So, we left the church and walked to Ofuna Station on foot. They were intrigued to “Ekinaka” shops in the station. They bought some food at one of "Ekinaka" shop. ["Ekinaka" means shops within the railway station.]

The train was not crowded and we had seats. They soon opened the food and began enjoying the taste of what they bought at "Ekinaka."

We went to Kamakura and I took them to a temple called “Daigyoji.” The temple is famous for its beautiful flowers in the garden. There were camellias and daffodils and some flowers reminded me of certain alpine flora.

After visiting Daigyoji Temple, I took a picture of them in front of the 2nd Torii.

Next, I guided them to Catholic Yukinoshita Church. Since they are members of Ukrainian Orthodox Church, I thought they would be interested in visiting a Japanese Catholic church.

It was also my first visit to this Catholic church, so I was also very much interested. Soon after entering the church I noticed a big picture of “Kirishitan” martyrdom for faith about 400 years ago.

According to the explanation at Catholic Yukinoshita Church, 5 Christians were caught in Kamakura and burned to death in 1623, together with other Christians in Shinagawa, Edo (now in Tokyo).

Catholic religion was first introduced by Francis Xavier in 1549. It gave strong impact on some “Daimyo” during the age of provincial wars (1467-1615). After the unification by Ieyasu Tokugawa, it was formally forbidden and strictly persecuted esp. after Shimabara Rebellion in 1637. (Persecution in Edo area was even before Shimabara Rebellion in Kyushu.)

After visiting Yukinoshita Catholic Church, we dropped in a “Soba”shop called “Kosuzu” near the church. It must be very popular shop because there were a lot of people waiting for their turn to enter.

We patiently waited for about 10 minutes or so, then we ordered traditional Japanese “soba” noodle. They enjoyed eating it.

There were many gift shops along the street. They were attracted by one of them named “Dekoboko-dou”, a bit strange name. There are lots of accessories, and Marta wanted to buy some for her mother and BJ’s mother.

Anyhow, it took a bit long time to choose, and when we arrived at Hachiman Shrine, it was past 2 pm.

There were some kind of orange trees at the shrine. BJ was looking at the fruits interestingly.

We climbed the steep stairs and visited the main shrine there. Then we walked down to the pond called “Genpeino Ike.”

There were many ducks and doves around the pond, expecting some food sightseers gave.
There were white doves in the shrine. We also visited a small shrine called “Hata-age Shrine” in the pond.
Then we went back to Kamakkura Station through back street of Wakamiya Oji. It is called “Komachi Dori” and there are many shops and restaurant along the street.

They looked all interesting and the couple tried to eat and drink here and there and dropped in some more gift shops, too.

From Kamakura Station, we took Enoden tramcars. It has more than 100 year history and there were many passengers in the car.

We got off at Hase Station, and I guided them first to the Great Buddha. The temple is called “Kotokuin” and we took “recognition” photos in front of the statute.

Then I guided them to Hasedera Temple. I personally prefer Hasedera to Kotokuin because there are many attractions at Hasedera, while Kotokuin, only the Great Buddha was the only attraction.

I especially like the new trail behind Hase Kannon Hall. It is a kind of garden with lots of stepps and trails from where visitors can have good command of the city of Kamakura and the beaches of Zaimokuza and Yuigahama.

After quick visit and sightseeing at Hasedera, we took Enoden tramcars again. The tramcars go through the best part along the seashore. You can see the beach from the window. You could see Mt. Fuji and Enoshima from the window, too.

We arrived at Enoshima Station of the rail way. But it is a bit far from Enoshima. We had to walk about 15 minutes to Enoshima. We could see Mt. Fuji beautifully along the way.

There are many small restaurant and gift shops in Enoshima again. They never got tired of trying some food here and there.

It was already completely dark. And when we arrived at the top of Enoshima, we could see beautiful “light-up” of the park and the lighthouse. It was a perfect time to visit this season.

After seeing the lighted up park and the lighthouse, we went down to the bus stop at Enoshima.

While waiting for the bus, we dropped in a fancy coffee shop and had some coffee and cakes.

Then we took a bus to Ofuna to Enoshima. It took nearly one hour but most economical way to go back to Ofuna.

At Ofuna, we went to a restaurant called “Ohdoya.” They serve good Japanese dishes and sake and beer with reasonable prices.

We had nice dinner,and their hotel is only 5 minutes from the restaurant. I hope they had good memories of this sightseeing.

この日は日曜日で、私が通う湘南のぞみキリスト教会の日曜礼拝に出席してから、観光案内を始めた。

二人はウクライナ正教会会員だが私の通うプロテスタントの教会の礼拝に出席してくれた。二人とも日本語はわからないのだが、BJはひらがなが読めるので、讃美歌をいっしょに歌えた。

SNCCのメッセージは11時きっかりに終わり、我々は徒歩で大船駅に向かった。大船駅では彼らは駅ナカに興味を示し、なにやら食べ物を買った。横須賀線の電車は幸い空いていて、座席に着くと彼らは早速、買ったものを食べてみていた。

鎌倉ではまず四季の花が咲く庭で有名な大巧寺(だいぎょうじ)を訪ねた。ここは安産祈願で有名で「おんめさま」という通称で知られている。我々は安産祈願は必要ないが、美しい花の咲く庭はぜひ紹介したかった。

この時期は水仙とツバキ、それに高山植物のイワカガミに似た花が目についた。

この後、若宮大路を八幡宮に向かって歩いたが、途中にカトリック雪の下教会がある。ウクライナ正教会はカトリックに近いのではないかと思い、立ち寄ったら、案の定、強い興味を示し、中に入ってみることにした。

私にとっても興味深い見学だ。中に入ると島原の乱の前のキリシタンの殉教の話がその絵とともにあったのに驚いた。

鎌倉で捕まったキリシタンは5人で品川の刑場で殉教したキリシタンの数は40人以上だったという。はたして自分で会ったら、どうだっただろうか。信教の自由が保証されている現代に生きている幸せを感じる。

カトリック雪の下教会の見学の後は、すぐそばの「こ寿々」という蕎麦屋に入った。

この蕎麦屋は昼時ということもあって、大変混んでおり、我々は店内の待機席に座ったが、すぐに外の待機席もいっぱいになった。

伝統的な日本料理といえそうなそばを注文して、楽しんでもらった。

この後、道路の反対側を八幡宮に向かって歩いたが、二人は凸凹堂という風変わりな名前の小物屋に引っかかり、お土産選びにたいそう時間をかけた。

特にマルタは自分の母親や、しゅうとめさんへの贈り物の選択に余念がなかった。

なんやかやと時間がかかり、鶴岡八幡宮に到着した時はすでに2時を回っていた。マルタは若宮堂の前でポーズをとり、また、階段の途中と最上段でもポーズをとった。

彼らの住むテジョンでは柑橘類はないので、BJには八幡宮の境内に柑橘類の実がなっているのが珍しいらしく、手に取ってじっくりと見ていた。

源平の池では渡カモなどが観光客の与える餌を目当てに集まっていて、これもけっこう楽しいものだ。また、鶴岡八幡宮の境内には白いハトが多いことでも有名である。我々は池に突き出ている旗揚げ神社も見学してから、小町通りを通って鎌倉駅へ戻った。

小町通りも外国人観光客には人気のストリートで、食べ物の店もよく流行っている。鎌倉は生しらすがけっこうな人気で彼らには珍しく、鎌倉ビールとともに注文した。

このほか、豆屋の豆製品や、各種肉まんを売っている店をのぞいたりもした。

鎌倉駅からは江ノ電に乗って長谷駅で下車。まずは高徳院へ急いで、大仏を観た。BJは大仏へ行く途中の店でなにやら大きな食べ物を買った。

大仏での記念撮影の後は、長谷駅方面に戻り、途中で長谷観音に寄った。大仏よりも長谷観音の方が見どころが多いので私としてここを外すわけにはいかない。

特に、観音堂の裏山は近年よく整備され、鎌倉の街と海岸が一望できるよい散歩コースになっている。このころは紅葉も見ごろで、ちょうどよいタイミングであった。

長谷観音の見学が終わると、ふたたび江ノ電に乗って、江の島へ向かった。

この区間は海岸がよく見える部分で、私のお気に入りの区間だ。江ノ電車内には鎌倉の教会のクリスマスのゆうべの吊るし広告があった。江の島駅で降りると、駅前の雀の飾りがかわいい。

江の島海岸からは富士山がよく見えた。冬は空気が澄んで、富士山が見える機会が多い。江の島に到着した時点ではすでにあたりが暗くなっていた。

ここでもマルタとBJは、食べ物に関心がある。手ごろでおいしそうなものがいろいろとあるのでためしてみたくなるのだろう。

江の島の頂上の公園はこの時期、ライトアップして美しい。また、江の島の灯台もきれいにライトアップされてみものである。

幻想的なライトアップを観た後、階段を下ったところの新しい施設になかにあるコーヒーショップに入って、バスを待つ時間も楽しんだ。

江の島から大船行きのバスに乗り、大船に戻ると、彼らのホテルのそばにある「大戸屋」というチェーン店のレストランに入り、この日の最後の食事をした。

和食も手ごろな値段でいろいろあるのでためしてみるにはちょうどよい。BJは納豆に挑戦した。

この日も長い長い一日であったが、彼らにとって良い思い出になってくれることを願う。
