Sydney Report No. 8 "Mt. Fuji and Mt. Yari” Mountain Guide" # 3 "Mt.

Sydney Report No. 8 "Mt. Fuji and Mr. Yari” Mountains Guide" # 3 "Mt. Fuji Subashiri Route" 2nd Day

We woke up at 2 am on the 2nd day of Mt. Fuji. I could not sleep well because of snoring, but when I got up, I ate the bento breakfast before going out. I was the only person who ate the bento. All others put their bento into their bags.

[In front of "Edoya" before climbing Mt. Fuji, 「

We wore warm clothes and put spats on our feet, then began climbing the rest of the trail to the top of Mt. Fuji at 2:20 am. It was crowded as I expected, but not too crowd like jam-packed train, rather we walked smoothly and we arrived at the top of Mt. Fuji at around 4 am.

[In front of the last gate,

Actually it was not the real top of the Mt. Fuji (3776m), but in front of Kusushi Shrine at the altitude of 3715m. The top of Mt. Fuji is on the peak of the crater called “Kengamine” (3776m) the opposite side of the crater.

[At "Joujudake" on the top of Mt. Fuji、

In order to reach at Kengamine, you have to walk 1500m more, and if you complete the perimeter of the crater, it is 3 km and it takes about 90 minutes.

Most of my friends got altitude illness and it seemed hard for them to complete this endeavor. When I asked if they challenged this extra walk, only two; Mr. Kim and Mr. Kang raised their hands. The rest of the three stayed at the lodge “Yamaguchiya” which is located next to the start point of down trail.

[Mr. Kim and Mr. Kang ready for walking around the crater,

It was blowing strong wind, and I felt very cold. Yet we began walking around the crater after seeing the beautiful sunrise.

The sunrise was beautiful, especially the tornado like cloud was beautiful, reflecting the morning sun shine.

We passed Fujinomiya and the steep slope called “Umanose” and reached at Kengamine at 5:10 am. After taking pictures at the stone pole, we hurried to Yamaguchiya where the rest of our group waiting for us.

We got together at 5:45 and began descending the trail all together. The three hikers who stayed at the lodge on the New 7th Station were waiting for us, and all of us arrived at the 5th Station at 9 am.

Then another problem came up. Mr. Liu, who snored last night, dropped his cellphone somewhere. When I tried to report this to the police office branch, there was no policeman. But one of volunteers who collect contribution for the conservation of Mt. Fuji environment, helped us by calling “Edoya” where he used his cellphone last. “Edoya” employee answered that he found the cellphone.

When we went back to Gotemba Station, Mr. Lie and I went to the “Koban” police office and reported the facts. Later, the staff person of Edoya sent Mr. Lie’s phone to my residence by door-to-door delivery service pay on delivery.

I got his cellphone when we returned from a week-long hiking trip, and I handed it to Mr. Lie when I came to Sydney.

[In front of "Edoya" before climbing Mt. Fuji, 「

[The sunrise at the edge of the crater,

[At "Joujudake" on the top of Mt. Fuji、

[Mr. Kim and Mr. Kang ready for walking around the crater,

[The shadows of Mr. Kim & Mr. Kang, 「

Sydney Report #7 "Mt. Fuji and Mt. Yari” Mountain Guide" # 2 "Mt.

Sydney Report No. 7 "Mt. Fuji and Mr. Yari” Mountains Guide" # 2 "Mt. Fuji Subashiri Route" 1st Day

On Tuesday, July 24, 2018, I took 12 Korean friends to guide Mt. Fuji Subashiri Route from Fifth Station (2,000m) to Eighth Station (3,400m.)

We checked out Numazu Grand Hotel at 7:40 and took 8:08 train at Numazu station. We arrived at Gotemba Station at 8:43 am.

I checked the coin lockers in advance, but there were too many people, so I decided to visit “Sightseeing Association Office” in front of the station, just like we did at Kamakura Station.

As for four women, they accompanied to the fifth station (2,000m) by bus. They enjoyed the atmosphere of climbing Mt. Fuji up to the Six Station (2,450 m), then turned back and stay at the same hotel in Numazu. I guided eight men to upper stage of Mt. Fuji.

[At the entrance of Subashri Route,

Yoshida Route and Fujinomiya Route are very popular among Fuji hikers because of convenience. But I like Subashiri Route best because you can enjoy beautiful nature of the mountain and less hikers.

[Along Subashiri trail、

So, I am sure that the four ladies enjoy the beautiful nature of Mt. Fuji.

[Mr. Jo from Daejeon,

The problem is those who aimed for the top of Mt. Fuji, the 8 men. Just like last year, each person has different physical ability.

At the same time, most Korean people have few chance of experiencing high altitude. There is no high mountain which altitude is over 2,000m.

In case of Australia, the highest mountain is Mt. Kosciuszko and its altitude is 2,228m. So they are prone to alpine illness.

I escorted those who tended to walk slowly. Beside 6 men from Sydney, two men from Daejeon joined Mt. Fuji hike this time. They were Mt. Jo brothers. According to Mt. Jo, my good friend in Daejeon, his elder brother had cancer operation some years ago. So Mr. Jo senior was the first one who pleaded not to go further.

Mr. Yu who is a good companion of mine in Sydney. He said he had calcification of the lungs. So he is prone to alpine illness when air is thin.

[Mr. Yu near the 7th Station,

When we arrived at New 7th Station (almost 3,000 m), I decided not to push them further and I canceled 3 people reservation at Edoya (3400m) and left them at Taiyokan Lodge and hurried to catch up with other 5 people.

Among the five people, I caught up with the last person, Mr. Lee who had altitude sickness a bit seriously at around 3,200 m point. We arrived at “Hon Hachigome” or the original 8th station together at around 17:40.

[Mr. Lee arrived at Edoya,

At Edoya, we had supper at 18:00. Then nothing to do but to go to sleep.

The problem was “snoring” of Mt. Liu who slept next to me. His snoring was so loud that the man who slept other side of me got angry at midnight. I felt the man stared at me, and threw his pillow to my face in dark!

I complained in a low voice, “It’s not me who is snoring. I am only the victim.” But strangely enough, Mr. Liu stopped snoring after I got the pillow in my face. It was past midnight.

[At the entrance of Subashri Route,

[Along Subashiri trail、

[Along Subashiri trail、

[At around 6th Station,

[I arrived at Edoya,

Sydney Report #6 “Mountain Guide for Sydney Hikers: Mt. Fuji and Mt. Yari” #1 Kamakura Sightseeing”

I have been climbing Mt. Fuji since 2006 every year. It was my 13th year and my 20th and 21st hike to Mt. Fuji this year.

Just like last year, I guided Korean people to the mountain. There were 8 people last year, and 12 people this year! Six of them were Sydney Hikers, four of them were their wives, and two men from Daejeon this time.

Moreover, for all people from Sydney, I guided them to Kamikochi (1,500m) and Mt. Yari (3,180m).

As for the 1st day (7/23), I saw them all at Haneda International Airport. First, I guided them to Kamakura, my home town.

First, I took them all to the 4th floor of Enoden Building where Kamakura Sightseeing Association Office is. I asked them to keep their luggage. There were two Japanese female clerks who spoke good Korean language. They were kind and gave us favor.

Then I took them to a restaurant called “Saizeriya.” My guests from Sydney were all surprise and happy to know the set lunch menu (Italian dish with rice or bread, vegetable salad and soup; 500 yen) reasonable and delicious.

[At Saizeria, Kamakura,

They were all happy without heavy luggage and being content with lunch and we began sightseeing by walking “Dankatsura” road to Tsurugaoka Hachman Shrine.

[In from of Tsurugaoka Hachmangu,

We all climbed the stone steps up to the shrine, then walked down to Genpei Pond, then walked through “Komachi Dori” and returned to Kamakura Station.

[At Genpei Pond,

We took Enoden train to Hase, then walked to “Daibutu” or “Great Buddha” and visited Hase Kannon Temple.

We came back to Enoden Building before 5 pm, and they got their luggage back and we headed to Numazu, a little town at the foot of Mt. Fuji by Tokaido Line from Ofuna.

Some of us had difficulty because the train was jam packed, but only first 40 minutes or so. We arrived at the hotel in Numazu at 18:40.

After checking in at Numazu Grand Hotel, we went to a “Yakitori” restaurant had a little party there. Draft beer tasted good!

[At Saizeria, Kamakura,

[In from of Tsurugaoka Hachmangu,

[At Genpei Pond,

Sydney Report #5 “Health Problem”and “Medical Service”

Sydney Report #5 “Health Problem”and “Medical Service”

“Definition of Health”

According to the Constitution of World Health Organization, “Health is a dynamic state of complete physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

I read the following statement, “In our lives, health is not everything, but if you lose your health you lose everything.”

As for me, I believe in the above statement seriously. This is because my parents were not healthy when I was in the middle of teens. And I witnessed many close relatives and friends not happy because of bad health situation.

I found myself diabetic when I was late 20s. During my stay in Korea (May 2003 – March 2014), I had medication for both diabetic and high blood presser.

That was a big factor why I began hiking constantly.

When I returned to Japan from Korea, I tried to keep my eyes to what I eat/drink (not to take too much calories) but it is difficult because of too many temptations.

In Sydney, it is rather easy not to give in to temptations, because I live with my first son and his wife (who are Christians) and this time with my wife.

When I took a blood test in September (2 weeks after we arrived in Sydney), my Ha1c was 8.1. There months later, it was 6.6!

I also lost my wight with 5 kg from 65 kg to 60 kg. (My BMI is 21)

Since I got permanent visa, I got “Senior Card”, “Medicard”, and“Snior Opal Card.”

[Opal Card is a rechargeable contactless smart card used for trains, buses and subways in Sydney area. With Senor Opal Card”owners and use these transportation systems by being charged up to 2.5 Australian dallors (about 250 yen.)]

When I use medical services, I use this “Medicard”and seeing GPs (General Practioners” cost nothing including blood test.

When you see “Specialists” such as an ophthmologist (eye-doctor) or a pedicurist (foot doctor), it was also free. But it might be charged depend on “Specialists,”I was warned.

As for mental and spiritual well-being, and also “social” well-being, human relationship plays the most important role.

It is really good if your human relationships are good among family members, and among socical groups.

We all go to church together, although my wife is not a believer. Yet we develop our relationships with other people, staring from at church.

During the four months, we expanded to several social groups such as a community choir group, Japanese choir group (Sydney Sakura Choirs), Tai Chi Practice Group (Japanese Social Group) and my case, two different Korean hikers groups and Ukulele class as well as men’s Bible Class while my wife explored to social dance groups.

During the 4 months, I went to Blue Mountains twice a week, and Sydney Bay trekking courses, and Lane Cove National Park.

I walked average 12 km, 18,000 steps and 50 floors per day.

We shall go home in Japan, soon. We hope we can come back to Sydney next July/August, and we hope we can stay longer than 6 months next time.

Sydney Report #4 Blue Mountains Hiking Club

Sydney Report #4 Blue Mountains Hiking Club [Korean Hikers]

I happened to get to know Mr. Zhu who is the president of “Blue Mountains Hiking Club(BMHC)”last year. BMHC is a Korean hiking club with the membership of about 40-50 Koreans living in Sydney. They go to Blue Mountains for hiking twice a week.

I saw Mr. Zhu only once on Dec. 22 last year for the first time. We took the same train to Blue Mountains, leaving Paramatta at 8:43 am. I took a seat next to him. The following is the story I heard from him at that time.

---

We was born in 1929 in the Northern part of Korean peninsula. He had the elementary education in Japanese. When he finished his elementary education, he was drafted as a Japanese soldier in 1931. He was only 12 years old. [He is now 88 years old.]

When the war ended, Korea was released from Japanese colonial rule and he became a North Korean soldier. He said he became a lieutenant when he defected just before Korean War (1951 – 1953),

Then he became a South Korean soldier until he retired as a South Korean lieutenant.

After the retirement as a military engineer, he worked as a plivate company engineer in Vietnam and Thailand, and finally he came to Australia and got a citizen ship.

He got married and have two kids, a son and a daughter. His daughter married a Japanese man from Kitami, Hokkaido.

The couple have immigrated to Australia and they live together now.

-----

When I came to Sydney in September this year, I wanted to contact him again, but I lost his phone number.

On October 17, I decided to try to take the same train from Parramatta. On the platform, I immediately recognized Mr. Zhu, and he also recognized me.

[Mr. Zhu in front of Darwin Walk,

We sat together and I heard more story. So he keeps going to Blue Mountains twice a week. These days, he goes to Wentworth Falls on Tuesday and Leura Forest on Friday.

I have something to do every Friday, but not on Tuesday. So, I asked him to let me join his group to hike Blue Mountains every Tuesday.

I belong to another Korean hikers group and go to Leura almost every Saturday. So, for me, it is same as Mr. Zhu, going to Blue Mountains twice a week.

BMHC occasionally holds some events. On November 14th, they held a birthday party for one of members at Strathfield.

On that day, they got off at Glenbrook station and held a short trekking to a part of Blue Mountains. Glenbrook is much closer than Wentworth Falls, and they went back to Strathfield by noon.

About 20 members joined the party. I asked Mr. Zhu if I could join the party. His answer was affirmative and he even paid 10 dollar fee for me!

[We arrived at Mr. Cho's residence,

We took a local bus at Strathfield, and visited Mr. Cho’s residence in the middle of the day.

Mr. Cho welcomed us at his garden. He showed his garden with many fruit-bearing trees. First, we saw 3 grape vines with many grapes hanging from the wire net.

Next he showed persimmons with green “kaki”fruits. Then I noticed there are loquat and pomegranate trees.

[Main dish was "Sashimi bibimpap"

I noticed some sheets were equipped to these trees. They were “insect glue traps.” There were many harmful insects trapped to the sheets.

That’s a good idea not to use chemical insecticide, but to use such glues. Mr. Lee also cultivate vegetables such as cucumbers, perillas, red peppers and cabbages.

There was also a relatively large cage in which a pair of canaries and I noticed that there were five baby-birds.

Mr. Cho’s garden is something like my dream garden. When I was a junior high student, I dreamed a dream that in the future, I would like to have a garden with many fruit-baring trees.

Mr. Cho prepared food by himself with some his friends’ help. The main dish was “sea-food “bibimpap” and miso-soup.

I really enjoyed the party, and I am looking forward to their Christmas party.

[Luncheon Party at the garden,

[Grape fruit and vines,

["Insect glue traps", 「

[Five chicks in the nest,
