100211 Trip to Kyushu #1 (九州旅行第1日目)

2010, Feb. 11 (Thursday) Trip to Kyushu (1st day)

This is my 5th or 6th time to use the Korea-Japan Conjunction Ticket (180,200 won, about 14,000 yen). This is a special pack ticket including KTX (between Daejeon and Pusan in Korea), ferry ticket (between Pusan and Shimonoseki), and special limited train ticket between Shimonoseki and Hakata. When I arrived at Pusan Station at 4:15, it was raining. It took about 30 minutes on foot to Pusan Port International Terminal.

There are a dozen of so-called “human carriers” who make livings by bringing “products” as carry-in language, from Korea to Japan. Among them, I got acquainted an elderly man (75) who speaks Japanese fluently. He said he graduated from a university, and got training in Japan. He looked quite healthy, and seemed to order his younger “carriers” to help him.

The Genkai Sea was rough that day. It was said that the height of the wave was about 4 meters. The Pukan Ferry was at Pusan Port, so we could go on board at 6:30 p.m., but another ferry boat named the Kameria was in Hakapa Port, and could not start the voyage yet then. Our voyage was also delayed by 4 hours and our ferry left Pusan at 11 p.m. and the sea was really rough. The boat was swinging and bouncing and I remembered the biblical description of Lake Galilee and disciples’ fear when they got caught by terrible storm.

Yet at 2 a.m. at midnight, the sea became calmer and the boat hurried toward Shimonoseki. The ferry arrived at Shimonoseki Port at around 9 a.m. in one piece. Thank God that I could land on Japan safely without any harm.
