100805 Mt. Fuji (3776m)

Date: August 4(Wed) – 5(Thu), 2010

Destination: The top of Mt. Fuji (3,776m)

Course: Mt. Fuji 5th Station (Yoshidaguchi) – Taishikan (3100m) – Hakuunso (3200 m) – Top of Mt. Fuji (Yamaguchiya 3700m) – Kengamine (3776m) – Subasiri Exit – 5th Station (Yoshidaguchi)

Partners: 20 Korean college students (14 boys and 6 girls)

Weather: Fine

Hiking hours: From 9 p.m. of Aug. 4 to 11 a.m. of Aug. 5 (About 14 hours)

It was my 5th hiking to Mt. Fuji since 2006, but first time to bring so many students. They were from the group of 28 who had been on the language training camp since July 20. They came to Lake Kawaguchi on August 1 when I joined them.

It was the last part of language training camp. They visited several Japanese companies and a university while they were in Lake Kawaguchi.

[We visited a Japanese company,

They also visited Narusawa Ice Cave, and a big outlet called “Gotemba Premium Outlet.”

Anyway, climbing Mt. Fuji is one of big events for them, and 20 students out of 28, challenged this endeavor.

We went to the 5th stage of Mt. Fuji (Yoshidaguchi) by microbus in the evening of August 4.

I devided the whole group into 4 small groups. They chose a leader for each group and I asked each leader to check the members from time to time.

[Before the start of all night hiking、

We began walking at 9 p.m. From 5th stage to 6th stage, the trail was wide and not many hikers were walking. So we certainly needed head-lights.

From 6th stage, the trail became steep and narrow, and we needed more strength. The sky was clear and we could see a lot of stars including the milky way. As we walked, the higher we went, the harder the trail became.

When we arrived at Taishikan (3100 m) it was almost midnight. We had a bit longer rest:30 minutes there. There was an emergency medical center next to Taishikan. Four of my students wanted to rest at the medical center, but they were not allowed to do so. (They looked too fine as people necessary for being taken to the emergency center.) Anyway, they did not want to go farther. So we left the four students and kept going farther.

At Hakuunso (3200m) we took pictures. Then another boy wanted to retire. So he went back to join the four at Taishikan. I took remaining 15 students and kept climbing Mt. Fuji.

[At the 8th stage of Mt. Fuji,

The sky was clear and we could see many constalations such as The Big Dipper, Cygnus and Queen Cassiopeia.

Then I noticed something orange color at holizon line. It looked like a big fire at first. No, it was not. Then I realized it was the crescent moon (maybe a bit fatter than crescent.)

I also found “Great Hunter.” The three stars of “Great Hunter’s Belt” was just lined up vertical against the holizon line.

We could see thousands of lights on the holizon line. They must be lights of Suruga Bay, such as Shizuoka and Numazu. But I could not confirm the lights around Tokyo Bay.

The trail became crowder and crowder as we climbed higher. I thought it was not so crowded at 8th stage, but it became very much crowed around 9th stage. I fell in sleep while standing, just like previous year hikes.

Then those who were supervising the hikers began urging fast climbers to overtake slower hikers, by taking the right side of the trail.

[At the 9th stage of Mt. Fuji,

So we could by-pass the slower hikers and reach the top of the Mt. Fuji before the sun rise (4:40 a.m.)

All of 15 students could reach the top of Mt. Fuji by 5 a.m. Then we walked through the most crowded area of huts and lodges. We had breakfast near Subashiri Exit.

There were also some young people who were playing the Japanese drum with strong beats.

[Some young people playing the drums,

It was a beautiful clear day. I urged my students to walk around the crater of Mt. Fuji. Ten of them followed me, but seven students gave up and returned to the exit. Only three students followed me to go around the crater.

[The snow remained in the crater,

We climbed Kengamine, the highest point of Japan (3776m) and we saw a bigh shadow of Mt. Fuji (Kagefuji). There was some snow in the crater. We could see high mountains such as Yatsugatake and Japan Alps. They were just beautiful.

[The shadow of Mt. Fuji,

It took 70 minutes to walk around the crater. After confirming 15 students, we began decending Mt. Fuji at 6:40 a.m.

The descending trail was wide and smooth. So I underestimated the difficulties of descending. Soon I began walking down the trail, I felt pain in my feet, so I could not pay much attention to some slow students.

[One of the students on the desceding trail、

Most of the students including those who gave up climbing Mt. Fuji at 8th stage, came back to the starting pint by 10 a.m. of August 5. But five of them did not come back by then. They arrived one by one later than 10 a.m. And the last (female) student came back at 11 a.m.

The microbus came to pick us up at 11 a.m. So we were just in time.

I thought I would be with the last person when I climbed Mt. Fuji again next time.

I thanked God to allow us all in one piece.

[Before the start of all night hiking、

[At the dawn,

[The sun rise at Mt. Fuji、

[At the top of Mt. Fuji、

[Some young people playing the drums,

[Breakfast on Mt. Fuji、

[At the crater, in front of Shadow of Mt. Fuji、

[With 2 students at the crater,

[The descending trail,

[A hiker riding on a horse,

[At the 6th stage of descending trail、
