110319 Mt.

Hiking Date: March 19 (Sat) Coudy

Destination (mountain): Mt. SangHwangBong (645m), Wando, Jeonnam Province.

Hiking course: Daeguri – ShimBong – SangHwangBong – BaekUnBong – EopJinBong – SukSuBong – Parking Lot (9 km, 5 hours)

Partner: About 40 Koreans (I was the only foreigner)

Since the 1st Saturday of March, we kept going to the south to find “spring.” This time, again, we went to “Wangdo” island which locates in the south-western tip of the Korean peninsula. It takes more than 4.5 hours to arrive at the starting point.

[At Daeguri before the hike,

We left 6:15 at South Gate in Daejeon and arrived at Daeguri at 10:50 a.m. After taking some group pictures, we began hiking at 11 a.m.

It was cloudy, but warm weather. So, I wore only a half-sleave shirt, no jamper necessary at all. I tend to be late while climbing mountain, so I tried hard to be in the top group, but it was difficult.

We came to the ridge after climbing for one hour. We could see the sea well and I found several beautiful flowers on earth.

Yellow flowers were “amur adonis” or “Fukujuso” in Japananese. In Korean, it is just the same Kanji, but Korean pronunciation, “BokSuCho.”

Another flowers were called “Olleji” in Korean, and it is “Katakuri” in Japanese. According to Eijiro, it is “Japanese dog’s tooth voiolet” or “fawn lily.” Since it belongs to “lily” family, the latter name is appropriate. Interestingly it is called “豬牙花” in Chinese. It means “Pig’s tooth flower.” Anyway, I like the sound of Korean name, “Olleji.” They are beautiful.

It was “Spring Cloudy” so we could not see the scenes very clearly, yet we could enjoy rocky ridges and viewing the sea during the hike.

We arrived at the first peak of “ShimBong” at 12:30. It took only 15 minutes to reach at the next peak, SangHwangBong, which was the highest peak for today. We had lunch at SangWangBong all together.

I joined KS’s table. They encouraged me to have “chicken feet” and “pig’s feet.” Most of Koreans like these foods, but I thought there were too littlte to eat from these kinds of foods.

Chomwa cooked instant ramen with “Naengi” which means spring vegitable in Korea. It tasted very fresh and good.

The top group started for the afternoon hike at 13:15. They were Jeongjeong and Palgapsan, and I started with them, but soon I was left behind by them.

I took several nice shots of portraits of the members at Number One Observatory. Then we went into the woods of evergreen trees and we arrived at the 2nd Observatory.

After the 2nd observatory, we arrived at BaekUnBong at 14:26. The stone mark of the peak of the mountain looked the oldest and the largest among the peaks in Wando.

I arrived at the last peak, “SunSuBong” at 15:15. There were several AhToSan members waiting for latecomers. Among them, “ChinhanSaram” giving cold beer and I got a couple of sips of beer. They tastes so good, I literally felt “taste of haney” indeed.

The downslope from SunSuBong was rather steep, and I began decending with Yoreji and Towa, but soon I became along leaving them behind me.

When I came to the last part of the hike, near the parking lot, I saw Chongjoeng and ChinhanSaram providing “makgeolli” with some food as sidedishes. I sipped one cup of makgeolli and it tasted very good.

I arrived at the bus a bit before 4 p.m. Hongjin and Boram and Chamhwi came back as the last members and it was 4:30 p.m. Then we went to a sashimi restaurant which we came several times before.

We enjoyed Sashimi party with beer and soju, and finally we had “Meuntang” or very spicy soup with fish as the final dish, we left the restaurant at 6 p.m.

We came back to the South Gate Parking Lot at 10:30 p.m.

This was my 17th hike for this year and my 232nd regular hike with AhToSan as the total.

[At the top of ShimBong, シムボン山頂にて、심봉정상에서] [At the top of SangHwangBong, 像皇峰山頂にて、상황봉성상에서]

[The trail in the woods,林の中の登山路、숲 속의 등산로] [At the first Observatory, 第一展望台にて、제1전망 대에서]

[A member shows the big stone mark of BaekUnSan,

[A cup of cold beer tasted very good!

[A camellia flower,

[Two members give "makgeolli" to other members,

[Wrap-up Party at a resturant near the sea,

[With "Heungnya",
