Destination: Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture
Itinerary: Kagoshima→(Tokkyu Kirishima)→Miyazaki (Tokky Nichiri)→ Ohita → (Tokkyu Sonic) → Kokura → Shimonoseki
Partner: Mr. Matsumoto (Up to Kokura)
Got up at 5:45 at Room 708, Toyoko-in. Had “healthy” breakfast, buffei style (3 different type of rice ball, regular rice, miso-soup, fresh vegitable, cooked vegitable, etc.with coffee, and juice.)

They offer free newspapers as well. So I think, one stay with breakfast for 4700 yen is quite reasonable.
It was raining rather hard when we checked out. So I bought a long umbrella by 300 yen. (The umbrella was quite helpful, too.)
We took 8:57 special limited train “Kirishima” and headed for Miyazaki.

We changed train at Miyazaki. We had 30 minutes for the next train “Nichirin.”

Then we headed for OhIta by Tokkyu “Nichirin.” We changed trains again at Ohita to “Sonic.” Thus I made a perfect round trip around Kyushu.

Mr. Matsumoto and I had plenty of time in the train. We talked various topics about history, culture, religions, etc.
We arrived at Kokura at around 4 p.m. Mr. Matsumoto headed for Hakata, while I took an ordinary train to Shimonoseki.
At Shimonoseki, I had to find Mizuho Bank for printing records on the banknote. Shimonoseki Branch of Mizuho Bank was located in front of Shimonoseki Police Office, about 10 minutes from the station on foot.
Then I had shopping on my way to the port. I bought things which were difficult to find in Korea, such as “Natto,” “good green tea,” and quality “coffee beans.”
After shopping, I forgot to put my purse in my pocket, leaving it in the shopping cart. While walking toward the port, I realized what I had forgotten. So I returned to the cash desk at the supermarket. The clerk found it and was keeping it under the counter. What a relief!
All necessary money I used at the port, such as tax and gifts for my Korean friends had been there in my purse.
On the board, Mrs. Hwang, a Korean-Japanese who asked me to get through the customs with her cigaretts (200 Japanese cigaretts and 200 American cigaretts) at Shimonoseki two days before, found me and spoke to me!
This time she did not ask me anything to carry. She obviously makes profit by bringing things between Japan and Korea.
I just listened to her story this time. She was born in 1933, but she looked much younger. She married a Korean when she was late teens. She got two sons, but later she re-married a wealthy Japanese and acquired Japanese nationarity. But her Japanese husband passed away some years ago.
It turned bad to worse, one of her son became half-paralyzed and she has to take care of.
She said both her Japanese husband and her son drank too much alchohole.
Her 2nd son lives in Pusan and she has her house in Shimonoseki. So, she traveles between Pusan and Shimonoseki with goods regularly.
I had the impression that Korean ladies were strong in bad situation.
When the ferry “Kyonhee” left the port of Shimonoseki, I took a light-uped Shimonoseki Tower from the ship.

東横インの708号室で5時45分起床。東横インの朝食はかつてはお握りとみそ汁ぐらいだったが、お握りは3種類。このほかに白米があり、おかずは生野菜、煮野菜、焼きウィンナー、漬物各種など、充実している。納豆こそなかったが、実に満足できるものだった。
また、新聞も自由にとれるのもいい。日経と朝日をいただいた。
ホテルを出るとき雨がかなり降っていたため、300円の大型傘を買った。
ホテルは7時40分に出て、松本さんが調べた7:57分発の特急霧島にのろうとしたが実は7:37発の錯覚で、次の8時57分発まで1時間ホームで待つことになった。
この1時間の遅れが、のちのち、スムーズに乗り換えることとなり、かえって良かった。まず、鹿児島から宮崎へ。
宮崎では30分ほどの待ち時間で大分行きの特急「日輪(にちりん)」に乗り換えた。

そして大分では5分の待ち時間で小倉行き特急「ソニック」に乗り換えた。そして松本さんとは小倉で別れた。

その後、小倉から下関へ待ち時間5分ほどで普通列車に乗り換え、下関には4時半ごろ到着した。
下関では駅から徒歩10分ほどの警察署前にある「みずほ銀行」へ行き記帳などをした。
次に、港へ行く途中のスーパーに寄って、納豆、お茶、そしてコーヒーが安かったのでコーヒーを買った。
ところが、買い物かごのなかに財布をいれたままそれを失念してスーパーを出てしまった。
外に出て少し港に向かって歩き始めた時、財布が気になって腰袋を確認するとあるべき財布がない。上衣のポケットにもズボンのポケットにもない。
だが、たぶんさっきのスーパーに置き忘れたとすぐに考え、引き返した。レジに戻って店員に財布を探していると言うと、すぐに身分証明書の提示を求められた。パスポートを提示すると、財布は無事戻ってきた。やれやれ、そして感謝。
財布の中には銀行のカードやクレジットカードの他、現金も1万円札1枚と数千円入っていた。この現金で税金1600円を払い、お土産約5000円を支払った。
感謝しつつ港に着いたのは5時35分。10分間で窓口手続きとトイレ、およびお土産の買い物を済ませて乗船。行きと同じ112号室に入った。
入船待ちをしているときから韓国人の切符マニアが話しかけてきた。彼の切符収集情熱はすごいもので、私が捨てた切符をゴミ箱からめざとく拾い、さらにあればくれと言う。
九州一周の最後の切符、大分～小倉の特急券および九州一周券があったので彼にあげた。彼は集めた切符を大きなスクラップブックに整理して持っており、私にも「自慢のコレクション」を見せてくれた。
また、帰りのフェリー「キョンヒ号」の中では、往路の同じフェリーの中で、下船時に日本製タバコ１カートンと米国製タバコ１カートンを持って降りてくれと私に頼んだ「ポッタリ・アジュンマ」の黄さんにまた会った。 今回は特に頼まれることもなく、会話を楽しんだが、彼女は昭和８年(1933年)生まれだという。昨年死去した私の長姉は昭和10年生まれだから、さらに２年も年上なのにずいぶん若く見える。 彼女の身の上話[身世打鈴(シンセタリョン)]を聞くと10代で韓国人と結婚し、子供(男二人)ができたが、その後日本人の社長と再婚。日本国籍を取ったが、ご主人は酒を飲みすぎて死去。今年61歳になる長男も酒を飲みすぎて今は要介護だという。 次男の家が釜山にあり、自分の家は下関にあるので月に何回か往復して「ポッタリアジュンマ」として働いて生計を立てているらしい。
たくましく生きているなという感想を持った。
その後、下関出航の時、ライトアップされた下関タワーの写真を撮った。
